Make sure you keep thinking about the paper and how you can make it the best it can be. Go over the additional requirements and begin thinking about the peer critique, quotes, and specific examples that you might want to use. Also, study for vocab and grammar # 22. Tomorrow we will be taking some time to work on your Novel Study Projects. Be sure to bring to class your selected novel and some ideas for in-class work. I will have the laptop carts for you to use.
For this evening, we will go with a current event. Remember no sports or entertainment unless you can connect it to a larger current event. NO CITE, NO POINTS.

"Icelandic volcano eruption intensifies"
A volcanic eruption in Iceland, which has thrown up a 6-km (3.7 mile) high plume of ash and disrupted air traffic across northern Europe, has grown more intense. Hot fumes had melted up to a third of the glacial ice covering the crater, causing a nearby river to burst its banks, and frequent explosions on the floor of the crater sounded like bombs going off. Iceland sits on a volcanic hotspot in the Mid-Atlantic Ridge and has relatively frequent eruptions, although most occur in sparsely populated areas and pose little danger to people or property. Before March, the last eruption took place in 2004. This event doesn't effect my life directly, but it does effect it in a way. it effects my life because there could have been people that I know that are over there right now that got injured because of the eruption. I hope that all the people that lived in the area of the volcano are all right and that none are dead.

yay I was first this time.
Today, President Barrack Obama declared his space exploration program. President Obama said that he wishes to see life on the moon, mars, and beyond in his lifetime. He also said he is 100% committed to the program. This is huge for our country. If NASA does get to mars with man, we will be the dominant superpower once again. We were the first on the moon, and we will be the first on mars. President Obama also said that the space program is to help show Americans that there are never any limits to what you can do. This is huge, especially in the economy now.

A cloud of ash from a volcano in iceland swept toward mainland europe on thursday forcing up to 6000 flight cancellations across the continent. According to the intergovernmental body that manages european air travel. Thousands of flights were affected as some of europes busiest airports closed. including Londons Heathro Amsterdam Netherlands Schiphol and Paris Frances Charles Gaulle. Volcanic ash can cause jet engines to shut down. The prime minister of norway was among those stranded by the closure of european air space. I think the euopeans were right to shut down the air travel because if they didn't people could have been killed easily so good call on their part.

The articel I chose is titled "Detroit amount the baddest cities in the world?". This story is about how a list of the top ten cities was put up and Detroit is on there. It is on the with the cities with bombers, but this writer said that there is a city with major terrorism going on but it is not on the list, so it makes him wonder. This worries me because of how close we live to Detroit and I know it is dangerous but I didn't know it was in the top ten. Tere are always jokes on movies about how ba it is and parents are afraid to let them go there. It me think that maybe that violence and harshness will strt to spread. It makes it so hard if you want to go somewhere in Detroit because you are always afaid you are not going to be safe.

"President Obama pledged his full commitment to the space program Thursday, outlining a new strategy that ends current programs while funding new initiatives intended to propel humankind farther into the solar system."
*This current event is crucial because the space program is very compelling and important to America. "I am 100 percent committed to the mission of NASA and its future," Obama said to applause from the audience of space program workers. "We've been there before," Obama said of the moon. "There's a lot more of space to explore and a lot more to learn when we do." Many presidents before Obama thought that the space program was a top priority to America and it's good to know that Obama believes this too.

The Senate voted Thursday to push back the deadline to file unemployment benefits until June 2nd. The measure would restore unemployment benefits to more than 200,000 jobless Americans who started losing them on April 5. The unemployment rate remains at 9.7% and the average duration of unemployment is 31.2 weeks. Our country has been through a lot with unemployment. I think we should try to be doing a lot more about it because thats how people live. People need money to survive and the only way they get it is by working. A lot of people have had hard times because they've lost their jobs. Unemployment doesn't give you enough to pay all your bills and feed your family. So we should try harder for jobs.

Apparently, president Obama is cutting down on the spending when it comes to outer space. NASA is very disappointed in this current event. I am also a little disappointed, because I would like to know more about the wonders of outer space. However, I can see where the president is coming from. We could be using this money for bigger and better things, After all, we do need to save our failing economy. After all, this change could do good for our country even though NASA is a little peeved.

Today, President Obama requested the Department of Health and Human Services homosexuals visitation rights. I think this is great however it should have already be done. Being a highschool student and seeing how judgemental kids are to people who are homosexuals, it is difficult enough for people to admit to it. I think that all of the restictions on homosexuals rights puts a lot of pressure on people to admit to themselves and others. It is very helpful and supportive to them that they are now getting some of their rights back. People don't realize that homosexuals are people too, their sexual orientation shouldn't prevent or affect their human rights. However, I was very pleased to hear that Obama did this.

American soldiers fight for this country 24/7 and most people don't have any idea how much they endure. well now some will know because today(April 15)doctors removed LIVE ammunition from a soldiers head and not any .22 and way bigger then a .50 cal. this shrapnel was actually part of an I.E.D that had not exploded and this solider had it lodged into his head. this event has only occurred 50 times in war history so surgeons were skeptical on the safe way to remove this stalactite of shrapnel.this connects to me an the whole country because this is what our soldiers go through so we can live nice and snug in our homes.this can connect to the community the same way that it connects to all of us because now we have a general idea of what soldiers actually go through to make this country safe. this is how a brave soldier lived to tell the story he experience that put him down in the record books.

Massive fireball across the midwest sky. The fireball was spotted for 15 minutes around 10 pm. It soon broke up to pieces and was lost from sight when it reached the horizon. This ball of fire cause shaking of homes, and outdoor utilities. This is dangerous because if it caused shaking from that far away what if it came closer? I think they should do more research on these fireballs so next time they see one they will have more info on it. Hopefully as they reach the horizon they will always dissolve. But for the possibility it doesnt we need to be prepared. This way we will always be safe.

"Congress extends jobless benefits." On Thursday, lawmakers voted to push back the deadline, until June 2, to file for extended unemployment. All they need is the presidents signature for this $18 billion bill to be passed.
If this bill is passed it can do good things and bad things to the community. The bad thing is that it can raise taxes for the people that are employed. Americans already pay a lot of taxes and raising it won't be good. There are good things that will come out of this bill though. The unemployed people will be able to have money to live off of. They will be able to live until they are able to get a job. This bill that congress has passed is for a lot of money but it is for a good cause.

Granholm recently passed a ban on smoking in public places all throughtout Michigan. Oakland County Executive L. Brooks Patterson was going to file a lawsuit because there were no funds going to this program and he withdrew that Thursday. I personally wish that he wouldn't have done that because I hate smoking. My mom had a double by-pass about 7 years ago and she had to have this done from smoking. A lawsuit against the ban of smoking because it didn't have enought money would be great because they would have to put more funds toward this project. But now that he isn't going for the law suit, this may be an un-addressed issue and I think that it definetly needs to be addressed. Overall, I wish that L. Brooks would have gone through with the law suit.

Russia has put an end to the adoption of children by American families until rules covering them can be hashed out with U.S. officials. A firestorm was created last week when 7-year-old Artyem Saveliev's American adoptive family put him on a solo, trans-Atlantic flight from the United States to Moscow. They hired a Russian driver to deliver the boy from the airport to the Russian Ministry of Education. The family that did that most deffinately was not right, but Russia should not suspend adoptions. It isnt fair to those american or families who wish to adopt and would take good care of theyre child. Why should they all be punished for the mistakes of one careless family?

Obama has recently requested permission to establish a rule that would prevent hospitals from denying visitation privileges to gay and lesbian partners. As of right now it is okay for homosexuals to be denied the right to visit a loved one in the hospital. I agree with Obama that this is wrong. i am also suprised something hasnt been done about it sooner. This affects everyone because if the Department of Human and Health Services grants this request it will be another step towards acceptance of gays and lesbians. I know Obama hasnt been getting the best feedback from the public since taking oath this past year, so i hope he isnt supporting this change simply to boost his popularity with the public. Facing homosexual discriminations needs to be one of our top priorities and starting with granting their right to visit those hospitalized freely.

OBAMA IS DRILLING-Around the U.S. today, advocates of environmental protection and renewable energy kept waiting for someone to jump out and yell "April Fools!" But there's no practical joke that can make this disappointing announcement go away.In an effort to win support from Republicans reluctant to get on board with a productive climate bill, President Barack ObamaBarack Obama proposed opening vast expanses of ocean along the Atlantic coastline, eastern Gulf of Mexico and north coast of Alaska to offshore oil and gas drilling.Activist opposition to the proposal has been swift, and raised big questions about how the plan would impact coastal ecosystems as well as local economies. wel the problemwith obama drilling into other coastal areasfor gasand oil could cause a big decrease in animal life and could crash economies.obama needs to think about what could happen andget his eyes of a couple dollars.

There was an incident of a bombing next to Afghan National Army base. There was a car bombing that occured and injured 16 people. Many people were alarmed because this happened in a city with more than 1 million people. f this keeps up then many more people could get hurt. The Afghan president said that he has plans and is working to make this beetter. There are the families of 16 that he can not help because they have lost loved ones in the incident but he is doing everything he ca. This is a problem because this cannot afford to happen. This is why it is such a big deal.

Oakland County Executive L. Brooks Patterson planned on the state against the smokin ban. After much pondering and 100 opposing calls and emails he has changed his mind. Perhaps he is agreeing with thos who think the world will be a safer place if we exposed to less second hand smoke. I think we shouldnt ban smoking because everyone has their own life and should be able to live it anyway they want. If peopel want to smoke and put there life at risk, then let them. We all need to make our own decisiosn. I think he should have satyed with his first instinct and followed with the law suit against the ban.

Recently, President Obama was cut a lot of funding going to NASA. This is an important thing for the scientific world because it means a lot to this country. NASA doesnt just look for new planets and stuff, they put all of the satellites in orbit that control a big part of our country. With this funding cut, NASA is probably really disappointed and feel like their work doesn't matter to the country. I know times are tough but I think these drastic cuts are a bit too much for something as important as NASA. There will for sure be noticable things that happen for the worse because of this funding cut.
