hope you enjoyed todays pick of stories. I think they both clearly created a message about tolerance and understanding. Also, as someone said, the notion of perceptions. If you were not here, you need to call someone from the class to ask which stories we read.
For this evening, discuss the idea of tolerance. How do you define tolerance? Give me 2 examples from each story how there was this idea of tolerance. Then, tell me how the idea of perceptions was discussed in each story. I am going to guess that this will probably take more than 7 sentences.

I define tolerance as how long you can put up with someone or something. An example of tolerance in King's story is when he decided to fight for what is right. Be could not tolerate being separte from the other people in the world. In the other story an example would be when the girl decided to branch away from her family. She did not want to have to wait at home any more. She wanted to go and do something with her life. She could not tolerate her family tradition or rules anymore. The idea of perception was discussed in each story. In the King's story he was percevied as different because he was black. In the othere story the girl was perceived as being a good at cooking Mexican food because she was of Mexican desent.
The definition of tolerance to me is one word, endurance. The definition of endurance is, the ability or strength to continue or last, especially despite fatigue, stress, or other adverse conditions, in other words, stamina. In "Straw into Gold" by Sandra Cisneros, she talked about how she had to overcome cultural expectations in her social life. For example, when her friends asked her to make for them traditional tortillas, and she had never in her life ever made them. Also in "Letter from a Birmingham Jail" by Martin Luther King Jr., he wrote this in response to his fellow clergyman's assertion that breaking the law is not how to achieve equality. King countered that one has a moral responsibility to disobey unjust laws. King is explaining how all the African Americans must stick together and endure through the hardships, and tolerate the pain. In order to accentuate a more valiant, and honorable defiance.
Tolerance is the amount of time that you can do something. One example of tolerance is when he decided to stand out for himself and to be treated fairly. Another example is when he helped the other people to be treated fairly. In the other story an example of tolerance would be that she decided to move out of her house with out marrage. She was tolerant of the tradition and didn't mind leaving. She also was tolerant when she became a writer because not many black people were writers. Perception in both of these stories were against black people. In "Letter from a Birmingham Jail" King was percieved as different. In "Straw into Gold" Cisneros was percieved as a good Mexican chef just because she was Mexican. She was also percieved as weird when she was little and had to keep moveing to different schools.
Tolerance is the amount you can take of something. Cisneros had a low tolerance for standard education. She didn't like school, and wanted to think outside the box and learn from observing and people watching. Another example from this story was moing so much as a child. As much as she got frusterated with moving cities and schools as a child, she got used to it and built a high tolerance for this. On the same token, Mr King had a high tolerance for people hating on his views. As he said, it happens al the time but he usually doesnt care enough to respond. This leads to his low tolerance for inequality. He hated being treated oorly because the color of his skin, and he succeeded at abolishing this. Cisneros had a rebellious perception towards her family and others in school, and Martin Luther King Jr. had a rebllious perception as well, although his was towards others' perceptions on his race.
To me, tolenance is how you put up with something. An example of tolerance in the first story is when the girl had to put up with her brother being taken over by her oldest brother. After that she didn't really hang out with any of her other brothers and she struggled for people to just remember her name. Another example is when the author left her house even though she was not allowed to, according to tradition. She was fed up with staying at home, she could only tolerate it for so long and so she left. An example of tolerance in King's story is the way that King claims that he wants help with the movement. He has tolerated all of the white citizens being rude to blacks but now he is fed up with it, which is also the purpose of why he wrote that letter. To go along with that, a second example of tolerance is the way that King writes the letter. He is telling them that he has been tolerating all of this for so long, and he just wants a voice in all of this because he feels like his efforts aren't helping. Perceptions were portrayed in each story because in the first story, the author had a different view on how she should act and not according to tradition. She did this by leaving the house and going to college. In King's letter, he used perception by showing the reader how he felt and tried to place the clergymen in his place and showed the clergymen his viewpoint. Overall, both tolerance and perception are shown in both stories.
Tolerance is how much you can take or deal with something. In the story about the writer, she tolerates going to school and dealing with all that even though she hated it. She also tolerated with moving all around and being the new kid in town. The other story with MLK also dealed with tolerance. MLK had to deal with all this hatred toward himself and his people and was never violent. He tolerated being thrown in jail and ridiculed for trying to get equal rights for blacks and whites.
Perception was another theme in both of these passages. In the one with the writer, she wanted people to see her as a writer not the dumb kid in class or the girl who had to get married before she could leave her father, she wanted to be herself. In MLK, martin wanted to have everyone see that whites and blacks were not different and that everyone needed to get along because it was tearing apart the country.
How I would define tolerance would be putting up with something you may not like or agree with but feel it would be better that way or you just don't want to try to change it. Reguarding King's story, tolerance is shown by wanting African Americans to be equal with whites and trying to get it that way but also just letting it go sometimes and being proud of your race. It is also sort of shown when there are protests and the police may wash them down with a fire hose or beat them but they keep on going and protesting. They don't care about the brutality as long as they are stepping closer towards freedom. Tolerance is shown in the other story that I read by her knowing that's she is different because she is Mexican and just going on with her life an becomig what she dreamed of. A writer. He put up with being on the poor side and still went on to achieve her goals. In King's story, the obvious perception is that the whites think that the African Americans are inferior to them. Everything is segregated and African Americans are fighting for equality. Perceptions are shown in the other story because she is Mexican an talks about that contributed o her poorness because of white peoples perception of her people. She did just keep going own. Tolerance and perceptions are shown in different ways in both of these stories and wa written very well.

I define tolerance as how long you can put up with something or how much of something u can take. In other words I believe tolerance is how much of something a person or living thing can endure. I think toleance makes a person. Not as in whoever can take the most pain is the strongest person, but as in if you can put up with something you don't nessacarly want to, it can make you into a better person.
Seeing as I wasnt in school today, I dont no what stories we read and therefore cannot give examples but I hope this is a good enough responce to your blog.
I define tolerance as being how long you can put up with someone or something. An example in King's story is that he couldn't put up with the segregation any more. As for Cisneros, she couldn't put up with the school system any longer. In "Letter from a Birmingham Jail" King was percieved as different. In "Straw into Gold" Cisneros was percieved as a good Mexican chef just because she was Mexican. He has tolerated all of the white citizens being rude to blacks but now he is fed up with it, which is also the purpose of why he wrote that letter. As much as Cisneros got frusterated with changing cities and schools as a child, she got used to it and built a high tolerance for this.

i define tolerance as accepting g weather you approve or disapove of it. to live with it even though you might not want to. in the first story we read "straw into gold" Cisneros tolerated moving around from place to place. evan though this affected how she felt because she was always the new girl with not many friends.but she tolerated this to because she new it was better to just accept it. Some examples of tolerance from letters from jail king had to tolerate many things. he had to tolerate the unjust treatment of his people. this must have been very hard to do for they were being treated so badly just because of the color of there skin. he also had to tolerate the fact that they really didn't hold much power over there future fought being treated fairly. but he still fought it.
Tolerance to me is acceptance! Whether we like it or not we're all different and we all have our own weaknesses and strengths and tolerance is realizing this reality and learning to accept it as we accept each other. An example of tolerance in King's story is his ideas completely. He believed in acceptance and tolerance for people of all races, backgrounds, ethnicity, religious, etc. He stood up for what he believed was morally right. An example in Cisneros' story is when everyone came together in one place and accepted her even though she was Mexican decent and was different than all of them. They accepted and tolerated and even encouraged her Mexican dishes for dinner and showed that her differences didn't matter to them. They still saw as the human being that she was. In King's story perception was huge! King was perceived as less than everyone else and treated like he wasn't even human because of the color of his skin. Everyone automatically thought he was worse only because of his race and not who he was as a person. In Cisneros' story she was perceived as a good cook because of her Mexican decent.
My idea of tolerance is the way deal with someone and their personality and actions. It's how you tolerate their ways. In "Straw Into Gold," there was an idea of tolerance when she decided to move out of her house without being married. When she did that, it broke the traditions that her family had. Example of tolerance from "Letter From a Birmingham Jail," King hated the way people treated him because of skin color. He thought we should all be treated equally and not on the way we look on the outside. Perceptions are discussed in both stories because the Mexican girl was thought to be weird because of what she did. People only saw her being shy and quiet on the outside. King was perceived because he was black. He wasn't treated fairly compared to all the white people.
my deffinition of tolerance would have to be endurance, which endurance is how long you can stay strong for something, like in straw into gold by sandra cisneros, the girl had to go through her different cultural events or make new friend because she moved so much. she had the endurance to keep strong and make new friends through out her child hood.then in the letters from burmingham martin luther king jr faught and kept endurance throughout his battle of racial distributions with whites and blacks, martin was sent in and outa jail fighting for blacks and whites to become one with eachother like brothers. then perseption was use when in straw into gold the famiy she was with thaught outa of the gate since he mexican she can make tortillas but really shes never even attempted to try and make one so in that way she was percepted to be something she wasnt.then in the letters from burmingham everyone percepted that martin uther king jr was like everyother black but he wasnt just fighting for black rights but fighting for some whites who want to become friends with blackks but soceity wont let them.
To me tolerance means to deal with something of some measure of dislike. In the girls story she becomes isolated to the point where kids in school or on the street dont even know her name. She tolerated this most of her life because she always isolated her self. Another example in this story is the fact she was mexican. She tolerated that she was different from the other kids where she lived. In kings story he was segregated from the others which he tolerated for a certain amount of time. Another example for King would be how people thought of his views. Even though they thought down on his views he tolerated how they thought of them. Perceptions were discussed in the first story because to her she she could not cook but to others just because she was mexican she could. In kings story he was perceived as low quality compared to everyone else because of his skin color.
To me tolerance is a personalized scale of what someone is able to endure and what they aren't. Some people have a large scale and are able to tolerate more while other struggle to contain themselves. Martin Luther King in "Letter From Birmingham jail", was a man capable of extreme tolerance. He, and many other African-Americans, had to tolerate the constant degrading and humiliation from White Americans and he also had to tolerate the unjust laws and punishments against them. In "Straw into Gold", Cisneros had to tolerate the constant nomadic moves from one flat to another and one school to another.
Perception did play a great role in each story. In King's story Whites perceived African-Americans to be inferior. Whites didn't think Africans were worthy of the same public facilities, transportation, or seating at restaurants and they would despise or neglect anyone who thought otherwise. In Cisneros's Story, the people who invited her to dinner had the perception that all Latinos knew how to cook Mexican Food. Just because Cisneros was of Mexican decent did not automatically mean she knew exactly how to make a good tortilla.
I think that many people look at tolerance differently and people have all different kinds of tolerance. To me tolerance is how much you can put up with something or stand being around it. In the story Sraw to Gold tolerance would be shown when she is invited to dinner and asked to make tortillas. It took tolerance because she thought she was invited for dinner when she was wanted to make dinner, this shows tolerance because she is probably thinking that these people are judgemental and doesnt want much to do with them. She also had to tolerate the fact that they were always moving from place to place so she couldnt make any real friends. She had a low tolerance for this but it was something that she had to put up with. In the story Letter From Birmingham Jail tolerance is shown through King and many other African Americans at the time. They had to show tolerance for segregation and not being able to do something simple as share a bathroom with the whites. They did as much as they could to change what was going on at the time but they had to show much tolerance to wait for a change. After tolerating it for enough they began nonviolent marches and sitins to try and prove a point. Perception is shown through both stories, in Straw into Gold it goes back to my first example with the tortillas. When her friends invited her over to dinner they thought they she would be able to make tortillas just because she was Mexican. Their perception of Mexicans was different then someone of that rationality. In the story Letter From Birmingham Jail perceptioon is shown when little African American kids look at whites because they have segragated them. When they cant play on public amusement parks because the whites wont let them their perception of whites becomes that they are all bad when that wasnt true at the time. King and Sandra had a lot in common.
I would define tolerance as the ability to put up with something, or how long you can stand it. In both stories there are good examples of this. In the story "Straw Into Gold" the author had a family that followed traditions, but she didn't tolerate them and decided to do her own thing and persue her dreams. She also had a low tolerance for her education as a child and hated school. Martin Luther King however, had a very low tolerance to when it came to him being treated unfairly just because of his skin tone. He did, however, have a low tolerance for violence and did not belive in it at all. He would fight for what he belived in with peaceful ways. Perceptions were also used in each story. In "Straw into gold", the author was thought to make good tortillas just because of her mexican heritage. She was not though, and the perception of her could have easily been changed. Martin Luther King's story also showed perception when everyone viewed him as different because he was black, but he showed the country and the world that race means nothing.
