Day 3

Today we continued our discussion of perceptions and cultures. Hopefully by the time we finished reading you truly understood the point of the Nacirema.

For this evening, I want you to find a current event and first discuss what the event is about and how you think it effects you. Then, I want you to discuss the current event if you were reading it but did not understand the country. You will probably need more than 7 sentences for this one.

My current event is going to be on israel. Today an explosive barrel washed up on plamachim a becach south of Tel Aviv. This is the third barrel to wash up this week. The other two barrels packed with explosives were found at Ashkelon and one at Ashdod were discovered Monday and disposed of. Generaly if ya find a barrels filled with explosives you would really stick around to long just incase there is an explosion. Israeli officers believe that they are there own but are not sure because there air force attacked two terrorist targets. I don't understand why a country would blow up it self because of terrorists. But it is one way to get rid of them i guess. Aslo i don't get how the explosives would still even work because they have gotta wet from floating at sea. Even with that possibility that they still have to potential to explode why would the air force put there own people in danger for terrorists?

"the doctor who administered the fatal dose of Propofol to Michael Jackson -- has made plans with the L.A. County District Attorney's Office to surrender on charges of involuntary manslaughter." People are starting to believe that MJ was murdered by one of his doctors. I believe that to be false. There are many other ways that he could have died. He could have had a heart attack. The Jackson family says they are upset with a 4 year maximum sentence, calling it "just a slap on the wrist." I say that the police is putting so much on such a little thing like the death of MJ. People should just let this whole thing go.

Chrysler Group LLC has confirmed that it is negotiating with the holding company it left behind in bankruptcy court to purchase the Sterling Height Assembly Plant, which it was slated to close at the end of 2010. If this happens then many people that work at the Sterling Heights Assembly Plant will lose their jobs, this means that the economy in Detroit will weaken even more then it's current state. This will affect me by threatening my parents jobs, and threatening the jobs of the people around me.

I have recently read stories about the state of Michigan and how many plants are closing, and how many people are losing their jobs. I don't understand how an economy can decline so badly that they cannot get themselves back on their feet. I read one specific story about a Chrysler Plant closing, what will happen to those people when the plant closes? Where will they go? How will they find a new job? How can a company do this? I don't understand.

Perception is what divides countries in two and determines any country's economical state. The middle east has the most diverse perception in the entire world. whether they are fighting for religious reasons or for the country's determination to survive. Iran is in the middle of all the chaos whether provoking it or hiding from it. Earlier today President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad agrees to send low-enriched uranium to several countries were it would be processed into fuel for an experimental reactor. The reason they did this is so the other countries would "lay off" from the rockets Iran has launched to experiments how far there technology has advanced. If i did not understand this country i would think it is a cry for power, the reason for this is because if Iran shows off there technology then they would be that much higher on the totem pole. this definitely effects me and the country i live in because Iran is already on the edge of war with many other counties and one spark could ignite the next World War.If this were to happen our country would not hold out, the Taliban is a ever-growing fear this would cause two countries for us to fight in. Unless The U.S gets more support in the war on terror the next World War would knock the U.S out of the super power category rendering us to not be so tough.

"A real estate developer testified today he gave former Detroit City Councilwoman Monica Conyers thousands of dollars in cash for travel, shopping trips and tuition for one of her children, and that she once reached into his pocket at a restaurant and took hundreds of dollars." Also, the man who gave the money to Conyers is charged in a seven-count indictment with charges that include conspiracy, extortion and making a false statement to the FBI. This effects me because I think that this is another reason why the economy sucks in Detroit right now. All of this lieing and trying to cover stuff up in our local government just serves as more corruptness and makes every doubt the ability of our city. If I were from another country and I read this news, I would think that these people are psycho. Also, I would assume that if some of the main leaders of goverment are doing this, no wonder why the city is so messed up? The government should be trying as hard as they should to try and be thruthful to their people but they are just hurting them more and the people lose hope. Along with that, I would think that the goverment is bad because they couldn't catch any of this when it happened, and that the investigation carried out this long. Overall, my perception of this scandal would be very glum and I would not want to come to the city in which this happened in.

A current event that happened is the State of the Union Speech giving by President Obama. His speech occured on January 27, 2010. One of the points in his speech was the creation of new jobs in the United States. This current event effects me and my family. This is because the family memebers who are currently unemployed will get a chance to have a job again. This job will help them support there household. Also, it would bring an extra little spending money that they currently do not have. If I was in another country and I was read an article about the State of the Union Speech I would ask how the loss of jobs happened to this country. Its a good thing that they are trying to rebuild the lost jobs. I would wonder if this plan will be a success. If the plan turns out to be a success then will it be able to carrie on for the years to come? My last thought would be, it is a good thing that the United States is getting back on track. I would hope that they can carrie on the plan and be a happy place on Earth.

On Christmas 2009, Umar Farouk AbdulMutallab highjacket flight 253 and attempted bombing it. Thankfully, one of the brave passengers,Jasper Schuringa, saved nearly 300 innocent people. To us, and most people in the world this is a terrible incident and could have led to a horrible trajedy. However people in other countries and religions, they believe it is okay to kill other people. As a matter of fact, some people's religion encourages it. They will be sent to Heaven, or whatever they believe in if they destroy us. It is terrible but that is what people are taught to believe. Terrorist groups everywhere kill millions of Americans in attempt to rid the world of the evils, which happen to be us. To us Americans, this seems insane and makes us fear for our lives. Based on the perceptions of these terrorists, millions of people are treatened for their lives and even killed.

My current event is the death of Brittnay Murphy. Currently Brittnay had collapsed in the shower. She was pronounced dead 2 hours later. Before her death she had flu-like sympotoms and was throwing up all the time. Her husband, family, and paramedics have clamed that the death was caused naturaly. There was a suspition that her death was caused by an addiction to cocain. Brittnay had standed she had never used cocain ever in her life. But and insider had said he or she thinks she was addicted to perscripted to Vidodin. I think that her death was caused naturaly. I have a feeling that how sick she was has something to do with it. Who knows if we will find out the truth...

A current event with a big effect is the earthquake in Haiti. Because of the earthquake, so much was destroyed and so many things lost, including lives. In many places, the country will have to rebuild from the ground up as if their old homes, towns, and communities never existed. But the US (being the savior that it is) has chosen to jump right on the opportunity to help the people of Haiti by sending money and paying for food, shelter, medical attention and more instead of helping our own homeless, starving, and sick people in our own country. With so much being sent to Haiti I feel our economy will lose even more than it already has and we will be in even deeper trouble than we already are. And as we know, when the economy goes bad, all hell can break loose in our work world. I am all for helping others but I really feel we should be firmly on our feet as a nation before we jump to the rescue for everyone else and make our selves, our country, suffer more economically than we already are.

This weekend, the European band, The Who, is playing the halftime show at the Superbowl. The Superbowl is the largest televised sporting event year round. However, American continues to confuse me. I don't understand why a band is playing in the middle of this sporting event. Why not talent of another sport? What do music and sports have in common? And what confuses me the most as an outsider to Earth, is why they picked a band that barley has any original members. Why not pick a different band where half of the members havent over dosed and died? It seems irrelevant to me.

Schools banning cell phones? At Wilbur Cross High School in New Haven, Connecticut, students worst fears have been reached. They banned cell phones and more then 100 kids have been suspended for carrying them after the ban. The school district is trying to come up with a way to incorporate cell phones into the lessons so that the students can use them. This affects our community because if they find a good way to incorporate them, we might inherit these same rules. If I was from another country, I wouldn't really know how to react because the ban wouldn't really affect a lot of people in other countries because not everyone can afford cell phones. I hope that the school district can create a good precedent for others to follow.

Doctor casts new light on cat that can predict death. Yes, my current event is about a cat that people believe can predict death. A U.S. nursing is home to a cat named Oscar. Doctors and staff members have realized that Oscar can sense when someone is going to die. At 6 months this cat would curl up to sleep with patients that were about to die. He has accurately predicted about 50 deaths. I think this event is interesting, but i don't think it really helps me. This is just one cat, and i don't plan on dieing soon, so this cat would have no input on me.
If i did not understand this i would think that it is very creepy and weird. I would first think it is weird because who lets furry creature live in the same place as them. After i accept that fact, i wouldn't believe that he can predict deaths. Why can just one of these furry creatures predict death? It seems odd that no one has found any other things that can predict death. This story can be looked at from many different view points. Someone could understand and believe this story, while others just think its plain weird.

My current event I will be talking about is the mortgage crisis going on right now. I read in the article that by June, homes are supposed to be only worth 75% of what they owe on the mortgage. This is not a good sign for Americans because this turns new buyers away from purchasing homes and that the economy will show no up-turn in the near future. This effects my life a lot because with the economy not doing good, my parents probably won't be doing so good and if they aren't doing good then that probably means I'm not doing so hot.
If I were from a different planet I would probably be a little confused on this topic. The idea of an country just collapsing finacially could be confusing to someone who doesn't know anything about economics. They would probably not understand why people couldnt just buy houses and change this crisis.

There are many jobs that anyone can start at any age. They require your attendance and hard work. A physical therapist assistant, registered nurse, elementary school teacher, computer software engineer, and a management analyst. All these careers don't include alot of schooling and are quite simple and enjoyable. They pay decent and I would definitely go for one of these jobs as soon as I can. This current event really involves me because I am looking for a job myself. However, if i was not from this country I would be confused on what the jobs really involve. I wouldn't know how to do things in America and I would be rather confused. If i was not from this country I would be afraid to jump into something new like having one of these new jobs. I would try, but be very nervous. Thing would just seem odd and I would feel out of place. I am usually set in my ways.

New Delhi, India (CNN) -- Limit displays of affection as you celebrate Valentine's Day or face prosecution, authorities in western India are warning the public.

Police have banned what they call shows of obscenity, noisy celebrations, and the use of liquor and colored powders from Wednesday till February 15 in the city of Pune, in Maharashtra state.

Indians often celebrate festive occasions by playfully splashing one another with colored powder.

Maharashtra has been the scene of violent protests on past Valentine's Days, by Hindu nationalist activists who say the event corrupts Indian culture. Maharashtra is home to the country's financial hub, Mumbai.

The police ban, which applies to public and private locations, also restricts gatherings of people.

Offenders will be prosecuted under India's penal code, the order says.

In this current event, the Indian people are banned from doing their valentines day rituals by their government. I dont understand why the indian police would ban a tradition, a ritual that is used every year on a holiday. What is the point? Although it doesnt effect me directly, i feel bad for the people who want to celebrate and arent aloud to. Why should they have that taken away from them?

On January 21st, Toyota recalled 2.3 million vehicles due to a problem with the gas pedals sticking. In many opinions this could be a huge event, either good or bad. It is definitely bad for Toyota, but for competing companies it is better than a government bail out. I believe this will very much help struggling car companies grasp the opportunity to attract customers and make money. In turn, this could help stabalize Michigan's currently struggling economy by helping out the thoroughbred American dealer which affects all of us living in Michigan.
Now, people of 3rd world countries who don't even have the luxury of cars might not even understand why cars are such a necessity because they are so used to not having the need for them. They might think of cars as unnecessary advancement and the future demise of the planet. Most automobiles today pollute the air, make getting fat and lazy easy, and cause destruction to the natural paths of nature with the need of roads. But, this is coming from civilizations who chuck people into volcanoes to appease the local gods, so what do they know? To others, yes cars are extremely convenient but only to a certain degree.

Lately the huron valley school district has had a shortage of funding and teaching resouces, just like the majority of Michigan public schools. A meeting was held on January 25 of this year to brainstorm new ideas. Drastic changes were discussed for the 2010-2011 school year in attempt to solve our problems. These include, ending our districts year round schooling option for one year. Our next option would be to close Baker elementary to all students next year, and lastly study our middle schools utilization in order to implement possible changes. This affects not only me but our whole community. Boundary lines will be changed, possibly leaving me to commute to Lakeland without the help of bus transportation. Another undecided change would be how some schools feed into huron valleys high schools'.
So many questions arise with this issue. Are all values of tradition thrown out the window when we are in need of money? Is what we are able to spend this newfound funding on really worth telling each teacher from the year rond schooling program or Baker elementary they are being layed off? I am disappointed to see ideas as heartless as these thrown around carelessly.
