I hope you are now clearer on dependent and independent clauses and the new information about simple, compound and complex sentences. Please review the notes so that you can do well on the test this Friday. There is no reason that people are not doing better on these quizzes as it shows a lack of paying attention during grammar instruction.
For this evening, we shall do a current event. Remember that the connection to you, the community and the world is more important than the brief summary. NO CITE, NO POINTS.

A school board in Rhode Island has voted to fire all teachers at a struggling high school, a dramatic and controversial plan aimed at shoring up education in a poverty-ridden school district. The firings came after the district said it failed to reach an agreement with the teachers' union on a plan for the instructors to spend more time with students to improve test scores. The terminations will go into effect in the next school year.
I believe that my current event could possibly affect my education as well. If a school board is willing to fire teachers as a result to shorting up education in poverty stricken areas, what is to stop them from shorting up education in NON-poverty stricken areas. If school boards are firing teachers, how are those students going to learn? THEY WON'T! I don't understand why they would even fire the teachers, I mean where are the teachers going to work and where are the students going to learn? It just makes no sense.

Ex-mayor Kwamee Kilpatrick is referred to as "a darker version of Bill Clinton". Kilpatrick had an affair with another woman and lied about it on the stand in court. This connects to my community because I think people will now percieve Detroit as a bad city. Nobody wants to go live in a place where the government has had so much corruptness. Also, I think that the people who once voted for Kwamee now feel betrayed by him because he basically put the city to shame. As if the economy wasn't bad enough and there are so many other problems here in Detroit, this definetly tops it off. Overall I think that Detroit needs to put this aside and keep planning on the future of the city.

On tuesday night a figureskater did an amazing job with a peformance of a lifetime. I was extremely hard because her mom passed away two days before. With her scores she was taking over third place.
This current event is really sad. She had the guts to go out there and do her routie even when someone really close to her just lost there life. Alot of people can connect with her. Sometimes they have to do things that are really important right after a family memeber dies. just like this one person competeing in the Olympics. He lost his sister to cancer 2 hours before he went out to perform. He told the figureskater he knows how she felt and that he was there for her if she needs to talk to someone. It just brings people back to reality and this tragic lost can happen to anybody.

My current event is on a study taking place in India that says that a vegetable can help cure and prevent breast cancer. The"bitter melon" is the vegetable that is said to be saving lives. It is grown in India, China, parts of Africa, and the Carribean. It is very high in vitamins and doctors are exploring the possibilities of this vegetable being able to treat breast cancer. This vegetable can make a huge impact on the world because many lives could be saved along with families not being destroyed due to death. ALso this will bring up cures for other cancers and help find a cure once and for all. The bitter melon is a thing that people need to look into because it may save their life one day.

Fuel, there are wars over it laws over it and is a big ordeal in the modern day in the race to a cleaner future. fuel-cell technology can help ease the burden on mother nature, only major corporations can afford these $700,000 piece of technology. The CEO,K.R. Sridhar, announced today they would like to cut the price to a few thousand dollars making them smaller to be put in homes. this could effect me directly for several reasons, one there will be less wars for fuel due to the fact that the fuel cells require little fuel to power a lot. another way it effects me is that in the future i will pay less for power if this technology is available. overall this is a great honors for the intention of creating portable power sources for homes. this i how the technology in the modern day can help the future of the world.

The current event i chose to write about would be titled "Toyoda 'deeply sorry' for runaway car deaths" which is about the deaths of people that owned these cars because of difficulties and the cars had to be recalled for it.
This affects me, the community, and the world in a bad way because you would think the officials in charge of the safety checks of the cars would do a better job if it involved the American peoples health. This manager should have taken these steps more carefully to make sure that these cars were safe enough to drive in. I am sure he has learned his lesson and will either be fired or get back on the job and do it much better. People in this world have to be more considerate but most of the time, it takes something bad happening to know what the right thing to do is

"A math teacher has become a national hero after breaking up a potentially deadly school shooting near the site of the Columbine massacre on Wednesday." This act of great courage is very important to me. It reminds me how there are still good people out there and not just selfish people who fend for themselves. This man performed an act of great courage and he should be bombarded with thanks from the whole world. Our society today makes me doubt how people can be, but this man proves how there are still kind-hearted brave souls who we can always count on. These kind of people still are around and it settles my worries to know this is true. Everyone should be like this man, even if it means putting your life on the line for someone else. I will always be eternally grateful for those who I can count on, even if they are strangers.

The article that I chose is called "Bitter Melon: A Breast Cancer Killer?." A vegetable used in Chinese and Indian medicine to treat diabetes may also destroy breast cancer cells, according to a study published in the March 1 issue of “Cancer Research,” a journal of the American Association for Cancer Research. Bitter melon gets its name because it's among the most bitter of all vegetables. This connects to my life in a way because many people that I know might have Breast Cancer. If this vegetable can kill Breast Cancer cells, then millions of afflicted women can be cured. If Breast Cancer can be cured then millions of women can stay alive. If you want to help Breast Cancer Research, then join groups on Facebook.

Teacher David Benke used to tell his students that if anything ever happend, he would want to be able to do something about it. While leaving Deer Creek Middle School, shots were fired at two young 8th graders. Benke remembered what he had promised and tackled the gunman. Other staff memebers then helped Benke and the gunman was held captive till police arrived.
I think this could connect to me in some ways because teachers often make promises to me or other students. Promises like that are important because you know you can fully trust someone. That teacher saved two childrens life. If other teachers could do things in other ways as to help children and make them feel trusted would be a good thing. Our community could see get out and help others. Just one thing could save someones life. Our world could become better in many ways. Everyone could be helpful towards each other. Someone in the world could always be using help. Its a good thing to show trust with others and to provide for them to trust you. It shows how important promises are.
Today A lady got killed by a whale! Her name was dawn brancheau, she was 40 years old. She was grabbed by the waist and lost a shoe! Then was shook violently and she died. The whale was angry and it was Acting weird so she tried to calm it down and she pissed it off even more. My pholosify is when a animal is mad ya stay away. So kinda a bad move on her part. I believe thats the lady should not have went in the close proximity of the whale while it was mad. I think she should haev gave it a fishy and maybe left it alone. Maybe it rememberd her and was trying to get revenge or maybe she teased it. We will never know but whatever she did she fought the whale and lost badly. Also one of the expirianced animal trainers drowned. I wonder how he was so expirianced when he drowned in the water. They should have a lil manual of what to do in that situation. I guess he forgot and he also lost to the whales. I don't really feel bad for the people they were dumb enough to get into the tank so i believe thats one mistake they wont make again. Oh they can't make it again! I think this is the longest blog ive ever done.

Wensday a SeaWorld Orlando trainer was killed a killer whale at the beging of the show. The trainer and slipped and fell into the tank and the Killer whale jumped in the air and grabbed the trainer by the waist and was thrashing him around. This event connects to me because I have always had a fear of killer wails after i went to seaworld and i've feared events like this happening.

Over the past year or so, the H1N1 virus has been sweeping the nation infecting many people. H1N1 may have killed as many as 17,000 Americans, and infected many, many, many more. Recently, the signs of the flu have been decreasing, with hospitals getting less and less cases of the virus. Although that doesn't mean that it is not still out there, the vaccine may now be included as a regular seasonal vaccine. I think that this is great news for everyone. Knowing that the flu scare is over is very comforting to me. It is also very good in that fact that the vaccine may now be something that is needed at seasonal checkups.

The Olympics are a huge world influence. For all that don't know, the Olympics are going on now as we speak in Vancouver, Canada. The U.S. has had huge success in this international contest. One of the events that we are dominating in is ice hockey. Both men's and woman's teams are doing incredible. Both teams, as of now, are undefeated. The women play against the favorite Canada in the gold medal match tomorrow night. The men upset the favorite Canada 5-3 Sunday night. This game was a huge upset in the Olympics because Canada was suppose to be the "Best Team in the World" as one writer put it. A hometown hero, Brian Rafalski (a defensemen on the Detroit Red Wings), scored the first 2 goals and assisted on another one to help the U.S.A. take down the powerhouse of Canada. This affects the entire country because it boosts the spirit of the Americans and reminds us that even if we are the underdog, we can still pull of an upset.

On Tuesday, February 23, a middle school in Colorado witnessed a horror unlike any other. A man, describe as being in his early 30s, opened fire on the school children as they were leaving for their homes. In an act of valor, a teacher tackled the shooter restricting him from injuring any other student. Two students were injured by the shooter but neither are in any severe states. They are both in the hospitals expected to recover.
Acts of Public violence in the educational region has affected our nation for years and it has affected communities and schools everywhere. In our communities, it is a constant burden to any parent that there is always a chance for danger to befall on our children. Some parents dont even send their children to school due to the fear caused by these tradegic
misfortunes. Even schools have distinct standards attempting to prevent these types of circumstances. School Shootings affect everyone around the world.

The Hummer brand closes. General Motors' plans to shut down the Hummer brand after a deal to sell its Hummer brand to a Chinese automaker fell through. GM didn't give any details on the plan. They just said that the plan fell through.
This effects the community in a good and bad way. It is bad because there will no longer make Hummers. Hummers are pretty cool cars too and people like them. People may like them, but they use a lot of gas. This is the good thing about the deal falling through. People wont have to pay a lot for gas in these cars because there wont be any more made.

The U.S. is continuing to help restore democracy in Niger. As this country's government has failed them, America has somehow decided it is our duty to step in and make sure peace is returned. Ignoring the fact that we are facing multiple problems of our own and in a struggle to return to our own economic peace. In my opinion i think we are trying to reach a perception of the generous, concerned big brother role between international affairs. Maybe the extra time and money currently directed towards international support such as this could be directed towards American schools everywhere lacking financial support.

My current event is on Obama loosening the control on guns and expand gun rights. Obama believes that every American has their rights and the right to bear arms is one of them. Lawmakers in Tennessee passed measures last year to exempt their states from federal regulation of firearms and ammunition that are made, sold and used in state. Obama has also repealed other laws such as the law to prevent 17 year olds to only buy handguns once a month.
I think that what Obama is doing is good because some old lady might be in the park in Detroit and have someone start to mug her but she stops the mugger. Only because because she had a concealed without a permit. And if she if Obama hadn't repealed the law to have a permit in order to have a concealed weapon, The old lady would have been arrested also. This could better help the community to better protect themselves.
