Day 7

For this evening based on the handouts I gave today:

1. Read the letter to HUAC from Lillian Hellman and explain what her goal was. In other words, what or who was she trying to protect?
2. Read the testimony of Eric Allen Johnston. Who was he? Who did he work for? What was the message he was sending to the committee?
3. Last, read the speech by Joe McCarthy at Wheeling, West Virginia. Explain the message that he was trying to give to those in attendence.

Last, what is your opinion on this event in history? Are you surprised that in America this happened? Why or why not?

Truly, you will need more than 7 sentences to answer this blog so do not rush to get it done but think and do it well.

Lillian's goal was to explain that if any democratic person living in the U.S. has freedom of speech, then a communist sympathizers living in the U.S. also have freedom of speech under the 5th ammendment. She really didn't want to name any names of people that she knew because she wanted to protect them. Eric Allen Johnston a business owner, president of the United States Chamber of Commerce, a moderate Republican Party activist, president of the Motion Picture Association of America (MPAA), and a U.S. government special projects administrator and envoy for both Democratic and Republican administrations. Eric was trying to stop them from taking over Hollywood, CA. Not all people in Hollywood were communists. Joe McCarthy was saying that all communists want to turn the U.S. into a communist country. He wanted to destroy all communists. This event in history is very idiotic. Every human being on Earth should have their own political and religious views. This kind of thing might happen again. I hope that it doesn't.

There is a lot that Joe McCarthy says in is speech that he gave at Wheeling, West Virginia. In the beginning it talks about how in the cold war, the record of battles change. At first, the US was doing better than the Soviet Russia but then the stats went down. The odds changed from 9:1 to 8:5 in favor of Soviet Russia, who is a communist country. Then it talks about how the government tries to change it, especially in the Senate. One of the reasons why it cannot change is because there are communists in the Senate. Also Congress hasn't fixed it yet because of "moral uprising on the part of the 140,000,000 American people." Later on it goes into describe that our moral soundness is still there but with all the war going on it has just brough the people into a slump. Thruthfully, I am very suprised that this happened in American history. I know the government can't be perfect and we will have some corruptness but this was a big deal all over the country. Also, innocent people were being killed over this, people that didn't deserve to die. I thought that we would have more control over our government and that it would die down after a few weeks but it was an ongoing process.

I haven't been there for the handouts but I will base my blog off of what I know from other peopl'e blog. Apparently Lillian Hellman's goal was to explain that people can have freedom of speech if they are democratic or communist in the U.S (only unde he fifth amendment). She didn't givenames about this because she tried to protect the people she knew. Eric Allen Johnston was president of the United States Chamber of Commerce and many other things. He mostly worked for the United States though. The message he tried sending out was that the communist tried turning the U.S. communist. From what I hear this caused a lot of problems in the country. The government should have had more control than what they did. Our government is strong and it is shocking to me that this happened in American history.

lillian hellman goal was that it is wrong that the goverment thinks it matters on the type of beleifs i had. her goal was to prove that she would would never betray the people she has met and the friends she has. i think sh was trying to protect her friends family and recent people she has met. also i think she is trying to uphold her respect, and her religion think she has the right to belive in any thing she wants to. in her respect she wants equal rights and freedom of opoin. she quotes "if the committee is unwilling to provide this assurance then i will plede for my 5th admendment. i think that she has all the right to belive in the things she wants to, that is what i think of this letter to HUAC from lillian hellman. eric allen johnston was a sucessful busniess man. he was sending this message to the commity to help stop them from hurting hollywood. when they do in the long run it hurts them by haveing less business any where. jon MacCarthay he was trying to get even more against communism and he wanted to no longer exist. my opion on this event is that it seems like a americas goverment falls for a bit but gose back to normal.no i am not because people think that if it is happening to other strong countrys then it has a good chance for it to happen to america. that is what i think about this and how i think it affected america.

Lillian Hellman was very mature in this situation. She refused to give up anybody's names to the HUAC. She showed patriotism because she stuck the the values that her parents had gave her, not to harm her neighbor and to try and tell the truth. Eric Allen Johnston was the president of Motion Picture Association of America (MPAA). He was trying to tell the committee the truth. His business was expressing the freedom of speech. He believed that he could do whatever he wanted to, within the boundary's of the constitution, without any government interference. He was sending the message that what the committee was doing was unconstitutional. Joe McCarthy's message was basically that communism was taking over the world and we must try and stop them from controlling the America's. I personally think that this time in history was needed. If Joe McCarthy didn't step up for what he believed in we might have all been convinced that communism was better for us. We might all be commies if it wasnt for Joe.

When it came to this situation Lillian Hellman was very fair. She didnt say any names because she wanted to protect the people she knew. Her goal was to explain that communist sympathizers in the U.S have freedom of speech under the fifth amendment. Eric Allen Johnston was a very successful man in many things. He was the president of MPAA and tried to get his message out that way. The message he was sending was that the commitee was being unconstitutional. Joe McCarthy gave a speech at Wheeling, West Virginia. The message he tried to send out was that communism was taking control and he didnt want it to control the U.S. This event in history was very shocking. For a long time we have been following the amendment of freedom of speech. I was suprised to see that at that time period we were basically trying to control our people. The people have for the most part always had that amendment and i dont see why they tried not following it then.

If Joe McCarthy didn't step up for what he believed in we might have all been convinced that communism was better for us. The U.S could be completely different then what we know of it today if joe wasn't around to stop communisum
