Day 10

I truly hope you gained a greater understanding of McCarthyism based on this movie and how scary it was that in a country that is supposed to be open to differences that we focused in on a group like that. Yet, it was a scary time because of the invention of atomic and nuclear weapons and the fear that they would be used to overthrow our democracy. It is ironic that some of the greatest critics of Hitler in America where proponents of the McCarthy hearings. This rings true to the same feelings after 9/11 with Muslim Americans who saw their lives changed because of something that people they did not know or were not related to caused. It is scary what we will do when we are frightened by the unknown.

For this evening please respond to the following:

“An era of chemical McCarthyism is at hand, and "guilty until proven innocent" is the new slogan.”

What does this quote mean to you? Based on the movie, how is this quote potentially true? Make sure you use two examples from the movie to prove this point and explain each example.

To me this quote means that if your not fully proven guilty then your innocent. Being said you might have done it but because they can't prove it then your innocent. This quote is a good quote for the movie because some people arn't fully proved to be comunist but they are treated as though they are. One case of this is when the guy kills him self. I think he killed him self because he was convicted of being a commy when he might not have been. Another example is when the one guys ex-wife was related to comunism. That guy could then be treated as a commy and have the studio shut down for hireing a commy. This quote is a major part in life today with murders and putting those people in jail. Good Night, and Good Luck.

To me this means your guilty untill you prove your innocence in court. This is 100% true to me we use it today in courts. The words are switced a little though, innocent until proven guilty. I watch alot of cops on tv. Their was a good one on last night. The guy had crack in his pants but the pants weren't his, i laugh so hear. Anywho, The guy killing himself with gas is a perfect example. Also the others that were assumed to be involved with communisum in some way were guilty of being a commy until proven innocent in court.

this quote means that a new era was starting to form an era where you are gulity until proven innocent. in the movie i think it is true. there was one person, who people thought he was communist ended up killing himself even though he wasnt. another exapmle was the airforce guy was proven guilty without a trail. this is wrong because the had the info if he was a commy or not. they had it inside a milla envlope and they didnt even look in it. that is what i think about the quote.

im not sher what this quot means because McCarthyism and incessant till proven guilty are very different. With McCarthyism no one is really truly proven to be a communist, like the person in the army or whatever whos dad had a magazine from another contry. But maby it means there still doing that today, like people are beaing thrown in jail for things they didnt do. because thats what they baleve and they need someone to throw the blame on, with no real concreat evidences. I dont think there is anyway to truely prove someone guilty unles there is concreat evidence, like someones saliva on the bite mark that killed someone, thats kinda wierd though. for example in the movie people are being proved guilty for being communist because they went to a meating a long time back. that proves absolutely nothing because one, they might have gone just to see what it is, or they did feel that communist was the best, but no longer feel like that.

This quote at hand can mean one thing. It means that one person who is considerd a communist is a communist until proven otherwise. If you are guilty of something, then you indeed are guilty until proven wrong. This mccarthy era includes communist meetings being held consectuvily, and random people attending these meetings without knowledge of what these meetings indended. According to the movie, this era was a tough time for America and everyone involved. People tried to do things to change what was happening, like how CBS used details to turn communism against the american people. All in all, communism died within most countries.

To me this quote means anyone found or accused of being guilty fo something is guilty until innocence is proven. For the time period of the red scare this means if some one says your a communist, your guilty of it. Unless you can prove otherwise, which was very unlikely. This caused a stirck of terror in America. Based on the movie, I think this quote would be generaly true. I really cant remember anything form the movie to support this, probably because of the fact that I barely understood what was happening though out the movie. But during the time of MacCarthyism, senator McCarthy in my opinion pretty much ran the country. He created a system that cause the rise and fall of hundreds if not thousands of Americans.

We are in an era, and McCarthyism is a chemical that is harmful to us and spreading, is the main idea of this quote. And in that era, people would be convicted and sent to jail with out a trial. So this quote is just stressing the need to remember the law that states we all have a right to a trial. It was demonstrated in the movie how people were just sent letters telling them they had lost their jobs because they were convicted of being a communist and it ruined peoples lives. For example, the lieutenant who was serving, was sent a letter that said he was already guilty but he never had a trial. Another example is a fellow reporter of Murrow: Hollenback who was accused of being a communists without trial and his wife left him. He saw his job going downhill so he killed himself. McCarthyism, in the movie, was proven to be a devastating and deathly chemical that was spreading out of control.

I believe that the quote means that if you're accused of something that you are guilty right on the spot. I believe that it it should be the opposite, innocent until proven guilty. In the movie, a guy was accused of being a Communist when he wasn't. The guy's dad ordered a Comunist magazine and was said to be Communist himself. If you're a communist then your family is allegidally concidered Communists. There was also the fact thatthe studio had a manilla envelope in its possession and didn't open it. If you're going to convict someone of treason against your country you need ALL of the facts/evidence. "Good night and Good luck."

McCarthyism is a major role in the 1940's and 1950's it has destroyed many lives and the first amendment was overseen. this quote means to me that the act that says all people must get tried in court is canceled out because of McCarthyism. this quote can be true because of how people in the 40's and 50's accused people of communism and there life from there on was on a black list. one example of how being accused can ruin someones life is by the way the guy kills himself because of the news anchor ruining his life. another example is when the guy got kicked off the naval ship for his dad reading a Serbian news paper. both of those guys were falsely accused and it ended up ruining there lives. this is my thought on McCarthyism and how it affected other people.

To me, this quote means a lot about communism. Back in the McCarthy era, every body who had something to do with communism was a communist, and that's just how it was. You never got to speak your peace, they would black list you and that would be the end of it. You would most likely lose your job and it could even be as extreme as in the movie we watched in class. Dan Hollenback had some communist relationships or something and his wife left him. Also in the movie, Ed Murrow was somewhat questioned by McCarthy for being a communist just because he was defending everyone in America and speaking out against it. Even Murrow's boss wanted to knock the program down so the studio wouldn't get ragged on for being communist related. Overall, the McCarthy era was not fair to others around it.

This quote is telling us how the directors and writers were treated back in the time of McCarthyism. Normally in our country, you are innocent until proven guilty. In the McCarthyism era, if anyone suspected anything you were guilty. The only way to get proven innocent was to give the names of other communists. One example would be how the guy killed himself. The government had labeled him as a commy without actually investigating him. The second example would be the guy who was removed from the airforce. They assumed that since his dad was subscribed to a communist magazine, that his son must be a communist. They said he was guilty before they could prove it.

What this quote means to me is that you are guitly of whatever it may be until you prove to people otherwise. Based on the movie this quote is very true because of mainly one reason. The main reason is that McCarthy was showing everyone somebody was guitly of being a communist no matter what. That person was a communist to everybody because everyone believed McCarthy. The had to either prove that they were not a communist or go through the very harsh process of being a communist because he lost his job, his wife, and nobody wanted to talk to him, be seen with him, or have anything to do with him. The poor guy ended up committing suicide because his life was so terrible and he had nobody, now that is horrible! It is amazing to me how far so people will go to make other people unhappy like that. I wonder if he felt bad after he found out that he killed himself because of what McCarthy did. I know that i would just feel terrible if i was him, besides the fact that i would never do that to somebody.

In our time now it is a rule under the court system that every person is innocent until proveen guilty. This quote is telling me the opposite. In the era of McCarthyism you were found guilty until proven innocent. This to me doesnt make sense because if someone has already accused you of being guilty then who is going to waste time trying to find out if youre innocent. The answer is no one because no one cares other than you. This era was basically run upon pointing fingers. I mean all you had to say was "omgosh so and so is a communist" and bam that person was guilty. Also when the quote says 'Chemical McCarthyism' i think it says chemical because what McCarthyism was based on ruined so many peoples lives. While some people have been ending this blog with the phrase goodnight and good luck im not going to because i dont like that phrase. Goodnight See Ya Tomorrow(:
