Character defines you as a person and how you act. Character grows and grows just as a tree does. If you are willing to be open, loud and outgoing, your character will be much better. The shadow says how confident you are about yourself. People only see you as the tree for your character, not for the shadow. A person's character will keep growing too, and they might not even realize it. Most of times the people that are too concerned with their shadows, will fail in life and in the prespective of other people. Character is the one thing in life you always have and control. If you are willing to have good character you have a plently of pride in yourself. If really defines how much pride you have in your life and whether or not you choose to be a good person or not.

i think its saying the character defines you. Just how you are around people. The shadow means that its showing what effect your characters shows on others. Like how a shadow covers people from the sun sometimes. i guess your shadow can help and protect people. As your character grows so does your shadow. All in all its a good thing to have a big and well rounded character. also to have a well designed shadow to follow your every movement.

I tihnk that this means that peoples reputation may sometimes or often cover up their real character. One bad mistake may have limited their repuation to be something that they arent. This is something that everyone has to deal with. I also think that many people get overlooked because of this. Sometimes, character can be misleading, if you are sarcastic or shy it may cover things up or show off things you really arent. I tihnk that character is something of great human beings and that the more character we have the better of a person we will be. I think that character resembles the amont of pride and respect that you have for yourself.

I think this quote means that people are judged on the reputation of their character, not their character itself. Similar to the shadow of the tree, our reputation is what people base their opinion of us on. Many people don't look to see what a person's true character is, but only think of them through the persons reputation. I think that this quote is correct. If you do not get to know someone for their character, you are only basing your opinion of them on reputation. Sometimes reputations can be false or over-dramatized. However, many times reputations end up being true. Abraham Lincoln is also warning the reader to keep their reputation clean so people do not make bad accusations of them. If you earn a bad reputation, many people are going to judge you on that. If you let your reputation reflect your character people will have a better insight on who you are.
This quote is all about who we are a people. When I hear this quote I think about maturety. Soem people grow up to be more mature. Others don't. I hope that I will grow up and be mature. I know that right now I am not as mature as I would like to be. I know that time is running out to be mature. I know that when I move out of my parents house I will have to be mature. I think that is where I as a young adult am struggling.

To me this quote explains how viewpoints can be formed about a person. 'Character' in the quote is likened to a person. someones character is what describes them or makes them who they are. like said in the quote, a persons reputation and character go hand in hand. you cant really have one without the other. as you dig deeper into the quote you realize a person can alter what someone else thinks about them just by changing their reputation. the only true way to see someone is to look beneath the shadow to see their real character.

In my opinion this quote means your character represents who you are. Character is made up of moral & ethical actions. The shadow is what we think of it; and the tree represents the real thing. Your reputation is what other people think of you & your character is what you truly are. Character is made up of honesty, courage, unselfishness, loyal, integrity, trustworthiness, respect etc... If we reflect on ourselves and do not view these characteristics in a postive way, we need to look back to the tree.
Our character will continue to branch out and we must always look back at our shawdow to make sure we represent the kind of person we want people to perceive us as.

This quote is one of those ones that takes a good amount of thought. I would say that character is just how one is as a person. Their thoughts, their feelings, their style.The shadow is what is actually exposed on the outside. It is what can be perceived by a person. Their looks, their shown personality. The character is a more important thing to look at rather then the shadow. If you just look at the person, the way they live and how they how they look, you'll know nothing about that person. If you pay attention to who they really are and their past and their personality then you might know something. I guess from a first person point of view, you can say that your shadow is what is on the outside, but the outside is the real thing. I guess this could also be pretty literal. The tree has color and style where as it's shadow is just a silhouette with no color or personality. This is overall what I think of this quote.

I think thais meens that your character is how people think of you. If you are outgoing your character is alot better. Your character grows alto as you get older, just like a tree does. As a tree gets older it grows. You can always control your character. You are only how you want to be and no one can change that. This is also kind of like maturity. after i read this quote and thought about it and realized what it meant, i thought it was so true. your character is always who you truely are and who you will always be. the shadow is what follows you. it shows part of you ,but not the whole thing. it is kind of like an impression of you but not the exact same thing. sometimes it looks different than the tree because sometimes the shadow can change a little bit. just like throught life little things change about us but we are still the same person. the second part of the quote means that others usually just see the part of us that isn't really ourselves.

If you act loud, and confident, then your reputation would consist of that. People perceive us by the way our reputation is, but deep down inside our character is truly what represents us as who we are. The analogy with trees representing character is saying that your character can grow and grow, but your reputation stays the same. The best thing about character is, it doesn’t always have to stay the same. You can choose to change your character whenever you want; you just have to put your mind to it.

Character is basically who you are on the inside. Your character changes and grows but it is usually who you are based on your morals and values. Just like a tree your character is not necesarilly what everyone sees. A shadow is like a reputation and it what your like on the outside. Therefore your reputation is how everyone percieves you. This can also change but most of the time it is influenced by others. Most people who are concerned too much with their reputation or shadow do not do as well in life and are usually pretty cocky. The length of a tree's shadow varies according to the location of the sun. When the sun is vertically above the tree, the shadow will be very little, while the shadow will be even couple of times longer than the actual tree when the sun sets; which means, if we don't see the tree, but only its shadow, we won't be able to figure out how big actually the tree is, and will misunderstand about the tree, which itself won't move at all. It's same as we look at people; if we only listen to the rumors and unproved gossips of somebody, we won't be able see who they really are. Don't let the gossips you heard about someone set your mind toward that person. See the tree, not the shadow.
i feel this means that people are based off their character or tree. Then they are Percieved by their personality or shadow. The tree or character is something in which people see and does not change. While the shadow of the tree moves. Depending on the situation or the angle of the sun, the shadow moves. Meaning that in different situations, the person chooses to act differently andis percieved in that way.Character once again is always proven to be the same, it judt does not change.

Character is a big thing to people. Most only view there reputation because its what is put out. A reputation can be changed from things making it good or bad. It depends who the person is and what they do that forms it. If a negative perception is put on someone it can have a huge affect on reputation. If you do a good deed etc, it may return. Truely the only way to view someone fully would be to know them. There character will be the true person they are. Some may have a negative reputation on them from a mistake. Sometimes it happens and you know deep down who you are by your character.
To me this quote expresses the definition of a person. As we learn and experience we grow as a tree. We take everything that has come before us and use it to grow. Us as the trees do not change our real morals or real values. We remain to our vows and ideals. However reputation may cause you to morph yourself. To create a desirable reputation you might not stand strong to your morals, you still believe in them, you just wont stand up for them. Thats why shadows represent reputation. The presence of the sun creates the reputation of the shadow.
Most of the time, you hear something about someone before you actually get to know them. Instead of being open and giving them a chance, we often stick to their reputation. When you hear of there reputation, it automatically gives you an idea of a person. Then you start looking for flaws that confirm the reputation. When you are walking, you often reach the shadow before the tree. That's like, how you hear about the person before giving them a chance. However, like a person, the shadow of the tree is extemely different than the actual tree. You need to get past the shadow in order to get to the tree. This is exactly like a person, when you really get to know them, you may relize that the reputation was completely wrong. Sometimes, people don't take the time to see who the person really is.

In turn, you have to look at the tree itself to see what it really is like. The shadow is the impression and what you show others about you. This happens for people too, sometimes people may be "dorky" or "geeky" or "weird" but as they get older they develop into a successful person. The people that we are now, when we get older they will change, but that's just normal. A tree changes, but has the same characteristics as well. A shadow is what you see, but sometimes it can be deceiving. Just like for reputations, most of the time they're correct. You can't always believe what you hear though. In retrospect our character is the definition of our morals and beliefs. Character is the building block of growth and maturity. A reputation can only shadow character, but it can never dominate. What I take from this quote is that what something gives off isnt the real thing. Just ecause you see a certain thing, doesnt mean that that is what it is. Once you see the actual object and get to know it, it is usually totally different than what it gives off. Also, the sun can have an impact on what is given off. The sun makes a certain shape of a shadow, or perception. It applies to people also. If a person that you hang out with is kind of crazy, then people will think that you are just like that.(They are the sun, you are the tree).

An example from the comic I was reading; a sexy, well-built tourist magnet on a beach resort may seem like the winter season's friendly man. He's actually a kind hearted guy just desperate for love. The rumors of him being a 'Tourist Attraction', and a 'Bendingo Beach Blast' were lies made to help him find love.
Even though he gave off the air of being a very friendly first date, he was a sensitive, loveable person.
Reputations can be either negative or positive. Mostly, they tell others things that arent true or stray from the truth in order to drag down the person or to pride them up. Either way, a reputation can hurt anyone.

I think this quote is referring to judgment and the way we perceive people. In the quote, we are seeing the shadow and thinking it is what is really there but its distorted and we're not seeing the real tree. In real life we could think things about people based on what we see on them or the things we hear but really they could be totally different. Most times shadows are distorted and can appear a ton different. People need to stop and actually look around though and then they will see what is really there. Sometimes it can be good for people to not know the real you but a lot of times it can be bad. A good reputation can protect people just like a shadow gives nice shade. Most of the time we should just look at the real thing though.

First of all it means that how you act makes up how you are as a person. in other words what your reputation is what decides you. with the whole shadow part it is saying what your actions are is what becomes your reputation. A tree is a perfect example of our character and how it grows. When we do good deeds and stay positive, our character grows. When a tree is provided with the proper nutrients and care, it grows just the same. On the other hand, poor judgement, decisions, and actions lead to the deterioration of your character, just as a tree would die with poor water and sunlight. If we build up our character, then we will stand strong like a healthy tree would. The shadow cast is still a reflection of us, but more of a reputation than anything. Sometimes people just stand under the shadow of the tree without ever stopping to look at the tree itself. What people think of us and what we know of ourselves is two different stories though. At the end of the day when the sun sets and everyone goes home, we are left only as the tree, without a shadow. We are accountable for our own actions and character, and that is what will stay with us throughout our lives.

Ooo! this hgoes great with what i just watched tongiht, on My Name Is Earl! in this episode, he talks about when he went to space camp as a kid. and he then figures out that the real chazz dalton is not running the facility, and that the fraud was actually his stand in. anyways, what happened was that the real chazz dalton said that the myth of himself is better than the actual man. in this way, it can be related to this quote, because sometimes the hype of peoples reputation can be overwhelming. we must always remember that famous people and heros that guide us are normal people to. thats what normal people do. we can all be the hero though, and be the real thing for somebody someday, and all it takes is the will and the want to put yourself out there to be the role models we all are.

The tree represents who you are. The shadow is the reputation that you get from other people. Many people just look at the shadow and dont look at the actual tree it's self to judge how tall it is. People judge by first glance instead of fully gathering information. The shadow might have some information on the appearances of the tree. It still will not give you any information on what is in the tree. People tend to look at the surface of everything. I like the example of the ocean. We all see the vast blue ocean. We see the dolphins, the whales, the sharks ect. We don't stop to think what could be beyond that. There could be a whole other world below where the sun cant reach any more. Millions of new species that are still not found. They have probably lived for millions of years without any human disruption. These are the kinds of things i like to think about day today. You see a door and you dont know where it goes. You let your imagination linger to create and image. I think we need more creative thinking in this world and we need to throw away the robotic feeling to how everyone thinks.

The shadow is what the tree wants people to precieve it as. The shadow does not show the true identity. It may only show what the tree wants to do to fit in. The tree is the true person and shows their true feelings. A person obsessed with their shadow is insecure. If someone is so worried that someone might precieve them a bad way than they give off a false shadow. The shadow is not what makes up the tree. It is what is in the tree that makes up the shadow. No one should have to create a shadow that does not show their true meaning.

I don't really know what the shadow is I guess it could be your reputation or just the way you view things. it could also be your confidence. When you look at a shadow you either see it as to big, to small, to wide, or to tall to how the actual thing is. An, like a shadow it can often be misleading. That is why i think that a shadow is like a reputation. becasue you only see what you wnat to see about that person; you only see the things they have done. But, once you look at the tree you see the real person. You see the true intentions behind the acts. It's kind of like in scary movies when someone see's a big shadow on the wall, but when they turn around to look it's only a small little tree in the window. The shadow you seen in the window might have mislead you to the actual thing.
