"Nearly all men can stand adversity, but if you want to test a man's character, give him power."
- Abraham Lincoln16th president of US (1809 - 1865)
Today we discussed the nature of power and its connection to our local and national communities. Reflect on this quote. What do you think it means? How does this connect to your own life, school, community?

I think this quote means that the people can take adveristy and conflict and trouble, we can handle it. but once you give us power we will realize that we are as stong and powerful as we thought we were. power can get the best of some poeple and they will take advantage of the power they have. This quote connects to my life, in school because i can handle the dramam and conflits between friends but when i ge the power to control it, it gets uot of hand. In the community because we can handle the dissagreements and different points of view but when one person gets the power to chnage things, they will change them for what they think and not what's best for the community and the people in the community.
I think this quote means if you want to get to know a person then you give them power to see who they really are. this reflects in my life because i think if you want to know a true person you should give them some power to see how they react to it. If they cant handle it they are most likely going to become selfish. If they can handle it they will probably put others before themselves. This is why good old abe was right in this quote because you can find who a person really is because of how they handle themselves. In school you will know who a teacher really is by the way they direct their classroom. If they dont teach and just give busy work they are most likely not very sociable. Where as if they do the opposite and communicate with students they probably are. This quote relates to community because whoever is in charge such as the mayor, or anyone in power will handle what the community wants before what they want.
I think that this quote is very true and means a lot. Most people in the world can handle adversity thrown at them but most people cant handle power. When poeple get power they become a new person and their personality canges completely. When poeple get power they become greedy and lose sight of their real values. This relates to my life because sometimes in school when we do projects some people become to bossy if they are th group leader. In Animal Farm there is some foreshadowing that the pigs will become to greedy with power. The pigs are already eating more food than other, teaching the dogs the way of life they thing they should have, and just tellin people what to do not actually working. This is how power tests real character.
I think that this quote means that peoples true colors come out when they are in a position of power. Abraham Lincoln think that people can change a lot when under stress of being in a place of power. This connects to my life in a couple of ways. For one, you see people start to change in the world when they receive a powerful position. Another is the way teachers carry out their classes. Teachers can react in different ways to their power that they have over students and it is a big change for some people to be holding power.
To see who someone really is you have to give them power. This will also show how someone will act under pressure. For example if there is a group of people working and one gets promoted to the boss that one will gane power. If he becomes mean and selfish that is who he really is, that is his character. I have a lot of power at my house when I get home from school because my parents aren't home. I don't do anything that is bad because that is my character. Also, in school I have some power because I get to pick who I sit with at lunch and this shows my character because of my friends. Power is a special thing and when corrupt can turn out horrible.
i think that this quote means that there are simple things that everybody can endure, but if you want to see how a person really is, give them a lot of power. a lot of people cant handle so much power and it changes them or just brings out their actual personality. its hard to say you wont let power get t your head and actually mean it. this can connect because i have known a couple of people who got a little power from a teacher or something and changed a little bit. they started acting like they were a little bit better than everybody. i dont think i would abuse power because i am not really a leader so i wouldnt do a lot with it.

I think this means kinda about what we were talkign about today. That power can corrupt people. When you give someone power, they can either stay true to their beliefs or they can turn into a power hungry control freak. Liek the quote says, power tests character. This connects to anyone who is given, or witnesses someone who is given power. If they have a strong character, they wont be corrupt.
to me this quote means that if you wanna seea man and what hes really like give him power and see what he does with what he has andthats the realy man he is. this quote tome in my life is like how i have a power and its being a bad guy like a cocky guy and i was gave that character and its like my power cuz no one messes with me because im a big kidbut its what they placed me as cuz i can defend my self so its like my power.
This is a very meaningful quote. As adversity is the ability to muster up courage and bravery when things don't go your way, most men have this when things are bad. What Lincoln was implying is, adversity does show character, however, giving a man power can diminish his character. A man with power tends to become selfish and abuses his advantage to boss others around. Anyone can show character through adversity but a man with power may use it to his advantage. Character is shown this way in many politicians. Most Presidents use their power to their advantage and screw the people over which tests their character and shows a poor result.
ooo this Quot is good. by giving power to someone it definitely will show there true nature. for now that they have the power they can do whatever they want, and they will do the things that they couldent do befor without the power. it will show you how easy there corrupted or how strong of a person they are also. for example, you give someone a gun. now they have power over most of there surroundings. by seeing what they do with it, you see what kind of person they are. a bad or kind of messed up person might kill someone, or kill animals just to kill animals. maby a practice person will use it for hunting. a peaceful person will shoot at targets. or maby a scare person will just put it down. if you fit into one of thees category, it was just a an example, im not saying your mest up or week haha. this connects with most things we do, like the teacher has power over there students. you see what kind of person they are when teaching.
This quote is oh so true the second i read this i was just struck by its simplicity. this quote cannot be more clear then it is now, it basically means to see ones true colors give a man power and see if it changes. this can surely connect to real life in many ways. this connect the first way by the way teachers act. For example Mr.Kay he has a good character im sure whether he is in school or out of school because he doesn't hide anything. also to tell if what your friends character is well you can give them power. how you would do this is see what they are good at and try to do the same, if they make fun of you for being bad and always using it as an example. this is how i felt about the brilliant Abe Lincoln quote.
I think this quote means that when you have character, your being true to yourself and what you beleive. So if you give someone power, it tests it to see what they will actually do with what they have. This connects to my life because if you really want to know how someones like, let them take control and see what kinds of things they do. By them having power, they might do a bunch of things you don't like. Then you can really see what kind of person they are. This connects to school because the principals, teachers, and everyone else who has power. You can see how they really are because they all have power and run things differently. It shows you what kind of person they are by the way they do things. In our community, you can see the way the mayor or governor handles things. A lot of people dislike them because the way they deal with power or some people love them. Everyone acts differently when their given power.
I think that this quote directly correlates to the discussion that we had in class today. I think that Lincoln was trying to say that if you think a man is moral, if you think a man is strong, test him with the ability of power and see how long he can last at being moral and strong. The biggest vice of mankind in my opinion is power. It can make a strong man weak, and can make a incorruptible man corrupt. The definition of Adversity "...is adverse fortune or fate; a condition marked by misfortune, calamity, or distress:...". This quote is saying that anyone can come out of a tough spot alright, but if you give him power and majesty, he will waver and fall. Some men can use power to their advantage and stay moral throughout, but some men are big headed and abuse their strength. This is relevant in my life because if my brother gets a better grade than me my parents praise him to no end. Then he uses that edge to have power over me. If he says, "Oh well Mom today I saw Sydney doing..." then I get in trouble. He has a power over me because he's in my parents favor.
This quote really makes me think. Power needs to always be given to the right people. Thats why it is always such a big decesion on who becomes president. But really, we don't know how a person will handle power until it is given to them. They could all react to it differently. A person could handle things very will and everyone would be proud, or they could just let it all go to their head and rule things the wrong way. I wonder what I would be like if i had power. I honestly don't know. This world we live in is one unpredictible place.
I think quote means if you want to get to know someone you have to give them important power to see how they handle it. If they handle it resonably then you know that they are a good person. If the person abuses power then they are a good person. This connects to school. Like when you have like captains and class officers they get power. You will find out who they truely are. If they abuse the power then you know that they are not a good person. If they help out and do not abuse they power they are a good person. Power defines people. It is how they handle the power. Like I said if they abuse it they are people that would not have a very good character. If they help out the community or team or whatever they must be a good person. They are not selfish!
I think that this quote means when people get too much power they always abuse it. If it is just a man with no power he is a good person. People with power tend to get greedy and mean. I don't think this connects to my personal life that much. It doesn't because no one in my life really has a lot of power. In school i think its the same way. The principal has the most power but he doesn't abuse it. He uses his power to help the school. As things get bigger, like in the community, is when the problems start. Leaders think that they can get whatever they want. Overall, little power is good but when a man gets too much power he abuses it.

I think this quote means that people get carried away with power. When it comes to adverstity, people are not as confident with it and will not become something they shouldn't be. However, when it comes to having power, everyone gets carried away and doesn't know how to control themselves with it. It connects to my life because at tennis, when people are selected to be captin they take advantage of their power. They abuse their power and try to control the rest of their team mates when we are all equal. This quote is really good at explaining how people let power take over. But when it comes to being afraid of something, they shy away and lose confidence.
To me this quote means that a lot of people can handle adversity, but give someone power and you will see their true colors. Either they will abuse this power or they will try their hardest to not abuse it. This goes on a lot in my life. For my lacrosse team we nominated girls who we thought would be good captains but one of them always yells at us and thinks she is so much better than us but in reality, half of our team is better than her. In school it happens just by having friends. Some girls who have a lot of friends have a lot of power and they abuse it when they think they can pick on people who aren't their friend. In my community this true test of character shows when you look at big officials like our mayor and governor and stuff. I don't know much about them but I think that they can handle power well.
This quote means that if you really wan to see who a man is, then give him power. Let him take control and see how he handles it. By doing this, you can see a man's real side. Some may not be as powerful as they think they can be but others.. others can have more control than they ever thought possible. Enough control to change history even. This definitely connects to me and my life every single day. Whether it be the power that I think I may have at times or my moms power that she has over me. It could be my teachers power or even the power of the president of the United States. His power and the decisions he makes effect my life and my future.
Abraham Lincoln has obviously had lots of expierience with power and i agree with his thought on powers strength. I think this means exactly what it say, that adversity is fairly easy to tolerate while power can be a whole other story completely. Power is a big responsibility because you have to make decisions against temptations like greed everyday. In my life this is shown anytime the spotlight is on you, or you have to make a decision without anyone watching. In school and around the community i think all authority figures have to deal with this struggle. They have power over people but their also suppost to listen to them too. Overall how to deal with power is a constant battle everyone must face.
I think this quote is testing the leaders in our country. A person acts differently when his is given power. He tries to control people and eventually gets the people so riled up that they rebel. Any normal person can control a problem. This connects to my community by having the head of a board abuse the power and steal money. Another example would the mayor raising taxes to provide luxarys to himself. Our country needs a leader that has good character and that will help the americans.
I believe this quote means that if you really want to see who someone is give them a little bit of power. I think this could cennect ot eveyone in everyday life because no one really knows anyone. This quote is saying give that person some power and then you will find out who they are. I think this is true to. I think this because people will turn ionto something completley different with power. I personally have see this happen. It happened to a friend of mine with turned out he really wasn't my friend after all.
The quote is saying that anyone can live through hardships and eventually get out of them, but when given power it brings out how much someone actually cares. Its one thing for someone to try hard and to say that It’ll be ok in a time of distress, and although this is the right thing to do its not a true test of power. When given power will someone abuse that power? Will they use it to hurt others they don’t like? Or will they use it to help everyone, will they be able to do the right thing even though to them it might be hard to do. And so through these means power is the only true test of character.
