Day 21

During our reading of Into the Wild, we discussed the idea of non-conformity. Explain how the citizens of Salem would fall into the definition of non-conformity. Choose a character and relate how their non-conformity is seen as positive or negative. Make sure you use a couple of specific examples from the story to prove your point.

Non-conformity is the failure to comly with something or in other words to not agree withj something. Through out the book, it is obvious that the citizens of Salem have taken the roll of very desperate people. This desperation is causeing many fights to break out due to disagreements between one another. As the war moves on, you definetly start noticing yet feeling for those willing to do anything for a certain cause. Whether it is food, clothes, or gasoline, people are willing to kill others at this stage to make there family successful. Out of the characters in the book, i find Marjane's father to be one who shows a sence of non-conformity. In the chapter, The Jewels, Marjane's father go'sto the gas staton desperatly needing gas and asks the man to fill up a small can. The man laughs and tells the father he will not be getting a small amount. This shows how her dad gos against all rules or normal laws and is willing to do or get what ever it takes to keepo him going.

From what i have read it seams that not many of the people in Salem are non-conformist. mostly all of them go with everything the church says and dose what it ses. One charicture who seems to be a non conformist is john Procter. He dosint baleave everything the church ses just because there saying it. He baleavs what he baleavs to be true. Another example is that he dosint go to mass as much as the others. he dosint just fallow the crowd he dose what he likes. it is a positive and a negative for him. He can live the life he wants because of it. But during the witch hunt it makes him more easily accused.

Not many of the characters in Salem are non-conformists. Many of them do the same things and have the same routine. There was one character that did come to my attention more than others. The character I would choose to be more of a non-conformist would be John Proctor. One of the examples is the one we read about today, when he is trying to set Elizabeth free. They offer him to take her out of prision for a year because of her pregnancy. Most people who think they are being smart would take the offer right then and there. John Proctor doesn't, and which means he is also concerned about the other innocent people behind bars. Many of the people in Salem right now would no care about other people and are ignorant, but not John Proctor. Almost of the people in Salem go to church very frequently. Proctor doesn't because he believes he can love Jesus the way he wants to out of his own home. John's non-conformity is definately positive because its not good to have so many people be the same and believe in the same things, John doesn't do that as much as the rest of the people.

John Proctor would probably be the one person who was a non-conformist. When everyone was being called out as witches, he was the only to stand up and say that Abigail was lying about the whole thing. Even though he wasn't accused, when his wife was chosen he didn't just stay out of it hoping people would forget about him. He went to the courts and tried to tell the judge that Abigail made the whole thing up to save herself. If Tituba hadn't lied though, than this all never would have happened. Seventy-two people wouldn't be condemned right now. But it wasn't just TItuba's fault. Everyone lied and pointed the finger when they were accused, at someone else. The best thing to do in any bad situation is to never conform in the first place.

non conformity is doing somthing against the crowd. the citizens show this because they stand up for there wifes and other towns wife when they were accused of being a witch. a charcter that show non conformity is john proctor. i think he shows non conformity because he was the frist one to stand up against abagil. this is a good thing because the wifes and daughter have a chance to live. or when john went to town so that way he could see parris sick daugher even thought he dose not like reverend parris. that is how i think john procter shows non conformity.

people in salem are about 90% conformists. Most of them go off what other say. Like when people started nameing names about whiches, others followed to get the blame away from them. John procter isant a comformist. John is the only one so far that is fighting for his wife. He goes to the court and fights saying elizabeth isant a witch and hes trying to get her back. Out of all the women or men then were accues john is the only one that went to try to save his wife.

Non-conformity is doing somthing against the crowd. The citizens of Salem really fall under Non-Conformity. They all go with the flow of things like the Church and other things. I would say that John Proctor is an example of a non-conformist. He doesn't go to church to hear the word of God. He also goes in front of the court to defend his and other people's wives. There may be more non-conformists in Salem back then, but I could only think of the one.

There aren't many characters that are non- confornist. The only one I can think of is John Proctor. He doesn't believe everything that the church tells him. He doesn't go to church every Sunday even though that's what he's supposed to do. And he didn't believe that there are witches. He is the only person that basically called Abigail a liar. John Proctor's non- conformity is seen as a negative. The fact that he and Elizabeth don't go to church every Sunday just made it easier to accuse his wife of being a witch.

The citizens of Salem fall under srictness and the same beliefs. Not everyone believes the same though. For example, Abigal shows non-conformity. She was caught dancing in the woods with rituals being said. It shows that she might be into witchcraft or something that deals with the devil. This is going against the religon and belief of te citizens of Salem. She knows this but she still does what she believes. This is a negative way of non-conformity because the ctizens take it with a negative attitude.

There are quite a few examples of non-conformity in Salem. Every main character in the story has something they dont conform to. For example Abigail and the other girls in the woods, Parris and what he believes is his pay for what he does, and Proctor and Goody Proctor not feeling it needed to go to church. These characters might be conformists in other ways but they certainly stick out in this way. Proctor doesnt go to church because of the fact that he dislikes parris. He disaproved of Parris's methods, thus he didnt attend church much. Which in the end didnt help Goody Proctor in the court later on. Proctor not attending church as he should be shows that he is a non-conformist. It may have negative effects, but that didnt occure to him at the time.

The citizens of Salem fall into the category of non-conformity in a few ways. One specific person is John Proctor. Proctor and his wife do not go to church on Sunday, which everybody else does. He goes because he does not want to be near Abigail and he doesn't want his wife to be around her either. Also, Proctor speaks out against the idea of witchcraft when Reverend Hale comes to town. Proctor says that all this talk about witches is nonsense and that it's not true. Proctor's non-conformity is shown in a negative light in the book. Not a lot of people agree with Proctor that he doesn't go to church on Sunday. Overall, Proctor is a good example of a non-conformist.

In the story most people are not in the catagory of being a nonconformists. The few are that you can tell that they are a lot. Many of the nonconformists stand out and are treated like they don't belong. One nonconformists is abigail because shes a slut. She and John Proctor had something going on together. Most people in Salem are married. Another nonconformist is John Proctor because he was going against the court. He went against it because his wife had been falsely accused of being relared to witchcraft.

Non-conformity played a roll in many parts of Salem in good and negative ways. Salem is a a very up tight and respected town and Abigal went against that by dancing in the woods and having an affair with Proctor. Another thing that happens is the Proctors dont go to church. Church is one of the biggest things in Salem so it was a big deal for them not to attend. Another example is all the people getting accused will just pass the blame so people think that the devil is out of their spirit. This is non-conformity because they do not believe in lying and they believe in the devil so for them to pass false blame is a big deal. Non-conformity plays a big part in the Cricible and these are just some of the examples.

The definition of Non-conformity would be to do something that other people wouldnt do. In the book, all the girls would be nonconformists. They all were doing stuff that normal people wouldnt do. Their nonconformity would be in a negative way. Because of what the girls did, other people are getting thrown in jail and possibly hung. Goody Nurse, forexample, would be one that got thrown in jail because of them. John Proctor would also be non-conformist by standing up for what he believed in.

As we can tell from the reading in class it is very hard to find a nonconformist in the town of salem. Most of the characters are not sticking up for what they believe in because of the fear of being turned on. I think one person who shows nonconformity is Mary Warren. In the reading today she was talking about how the girls were lying. Personally i admire that out of everyone she was willing to state the obvious. Another person would be John Proctor when he tries to free his wife from jail. They offered Proctor a deal for his wife to be taken out of jail for a year. Instead of agreeing and taking the deal shows he is also concerned about other people in the town. While most people in this town would just yell out names to get off the hook John doesnt do that. This shows nonconformity because not one other person in the town has stood up for people not in their family.

non-conformity in Salem is not to far-fetched for non-conformity in Into The Wild. the citizens in Salem are all slowly turning into non-conformist due to the face that they are doubting if the witch trials are right. Tituba is a good example of a non-conformist when she dances in the woods and speaks Barbados. anyone can tell that she is nothing but out of the ordinary and is influencing many like Abagail. in my opinion i don't think that she believes in all of the witchery. Tituba's non-conformity is and has negatively effected the town because if it wasn't for her none of this would have happened. this is the conclusion that Salem is in fact turning non-conformist in which people finally start thinking for them selves.

The idea of non-conformity is not doing what everyone else is. The characters of Salem are definitely all being conformists. They are all tossing around the blame because everyone else is. A good example of a non-conformists in this book is John Procter. Even after he bought his wife some time before she is hung, he stood up for all his other friends who have been accused of being a witch. No one else in the town even bothered to stand up for anyone. He told the court that his wife was pregnant and that bought her some time to live. No one else has tried to save their loved ones but John. Another time was right after he bought his wife some time, he said he also wanted them to free his friend's wives. John is the only non-conformist in town that i can see.

Non conformity does not seem to loom in the town of Salem. However, there are a select few who are showing some signs. Take John Proctor for example. John decided not to go to church as often as everyone else because he feels that Jesus will love him in his own way. People really recognize his stray from the church, and automatically accuse him of wrong doing just because he is non conforming. John also is not too fond of Parris, while everyone else is. John is not afraid to stick up for what he believes in, such as going to court to save his wife. People in Salem are not like John Proctor.

Mostr people in Salem does not fall in to the catagory of non-conformity.Jonh Proctor falls in the catagory of a non-comformis because unlike most he belived that there was no witches. In the eyes of the people of Seen as a bad thing because they think he is a witch. An example is where he is talking to Elizabith about there being no witch. Another example is in the court where he comfuses to being a leecher. My finaly example is where John does not go to church on saboth day. John Proctor is one of the few non-comformish in salem.
