Day 23

Remember to reread what we read today and to be ready for the written part of your final tomorrow.

I hope you find something of interest in "The Crucible." I think that it is somewhat fascinating that this event occurred in America and that we can still relate to it today.

For this evening, I want you to find something or someone that you found interesting in the play. Talk about how that event or person caught your attention and how it made you think more deeply about the play and about history. What is the message that you take from this story in regards to it application to us as Americans currently? To get the points for today, you must refer to 3 incidents and those impacts on the event or the person you have chosen.

The person that I found most interesting is John Proctor. The part where he made me most interested was by the end when he wouldn't lie about other people being witches to save his life. Honestly I can say that I would've done the same thing he did. Just the fact that he would not forsake other's for his own well being was astounding. This story seems to have that message, to us, that we should try not to let the past repeat itself. Though this story is important to us, events like this still happen. For example: the situation with McCarthy. People that were innocent were blamed falsely of communism. Although they weren't killed, just what those people had to go through was horrible enough to make someone want to kill themselves. When Proctor was put in jail I think that also had some impact on him. One, wasn't able to see his wife for 3 months, and two, his children were without either of their parents. Finally, when he realized that Abigail wanted him and was willing to kill his wife so that she could have him all to herself made him unnattracted to her entirely.

The way John Proctor wouldnt give them his name was kind of interesting. I dont think he wanted to die, but i dont think he wanted to live with out his name. He would rather die with a name then live with out one. This made me think of him as a good person. I would want to die wiht my name to tehn live with out a name. He also didnt want to say the rest of teh peoples names that he saw wiht the devil. He didnt want to have their deaths on his sholders. He didnt like lieing so he told the truth. He was never with the devil and neither was any one else.

I think that John Proctor was a important character is this play. At first Proctor seemed like a peron who was unfaithful and just a bad man. Proctor came of as the guy who cheated on his wife and thought little of it. Later on in the story we found out that johns consence was affecting him. He realized what he done was bad and wanted forgiveness. John ended up being one of the bst person there. He diddn't want to lie to get other in trouble. He was very stric on holding his word. He thought that if he were to lie he would lie for himself and not other. I thought that this play was a ok play. It reflects todays scoiety alot. People will listen and do anythig if alot of peopel are doing it. they want to fit in and be a part of a group. I tink that the crucible should that we should always believe in what we here.

Someone that from the very beginnning that i found interesting is Abigail. She caught my in the first act when she threated the other girls that she would kill them or make them wish they were died if they told the turth. She still goes after John even if he says that what they had is done and over with. She was always nice, young looking lady, which she used to her advancage. No one though she could lie her word was put above all the others and she always had the perfect answer to a question. She was the mastermind that started it all and yet she was just 13 at the time she got away with murder. Wtih no jury the judge was the one that decied who was right or wrong and what their punsument was. The message i think is that don;t belive everthing you are told and just beacause someone of a group is bad does not make everyone in the group bad. Abigial was a very evil person who didnt see how deep she wsa getting till the end. She was the one who did all the charging in the court that lead to the death of many.

I think abliagil is an important character in this play. How she accused elizabeth of being a witch so she would ger hanged so she could have john proctor. She has the affair with john and didnt think who she was hurting and whoses life she was messing up.her actions made me think that she was very selfish she wanted john all to herself. I dont think she was thinking at all when she was with john she didnt care how people would see what she did. I think she really did like proctor but i dont think what she did was right. To lie about her being a witch so she could get what she wanted.

Mr. Kay,

The person from the play that I found most interesting by far was John Proctor. The part in the play during Act 4, when John was going to lie to confess that he is a witch really caught my attention. I think that John took a very big risk when he decided that he would rather die than blame other innocent people just to save his own life. Another part in Act 4 also caught my attention about John Proctor. It was very hard to believe that John in the end had choosen to die even though his wife (Elizabeth) was with child. All though I have to give credit to Elizabeth because she acted so unbelievably calm about her husbands choice, knowing that she would have to raise their baby alone. And the last connection to the play that really got me attached to John Proctor was in Act 3. When John Proctor was arguing with Judge Hathorne and Danforth about how his wife has done nothing to deserve to be hanged. He really has a lot of potential, and he knows what he wants and what he will stand for.

Someone who I found extremly interesting but didn't get to find out a whole lot about would be Rebecca. I love how shes like the mother for the town, like she cares for everyone. I think her wisdom kept the town going. Thinking about how much she impacted the town made me think how bad the town will be after she was killed. I think they took her for granted and don't relize how much they need her. This made me relize that the people in the town would throw anyone under the bus. Meaning, that they would consider anyone a witch. This means no one at all was safe, that anyone could be accused. She did a lot for the town, like take care of people while they were sick. She would often give her input about how things could be better or what people should do. Like when she said that they should wait on calling Reverand Hale. She also helped people give birth and take care of the babys. All because Mrs. Putnam decided to blame her babys death on Rebecca they all let her get hanged. None except for few like John Proctor tried to save Rebecca.

In the play I found Abigail to be the most interesting person. Also how times have greatly changed. I learned that back in the day it did not matter what age you were you could "fool around" with anyone you pleased. Abigail was only 13 years old and she was sleeping with a man about three times her age. Abigail was supposedly in love with John Proctor but I believe that it was just the fact that she wanted to feel wanted. The message I gathered from this story was not to give into something that you believe. John did what he had to, to protect his name.

I found the authors use of mccarthyism intresting in the play. Its good writing how you can incorporate a current struggle into something that has happened long long ago. This just prooves that history has a tendency to repeat itsself. Even though the play was about making false accuasations on witches, this can still apply today with racial profiling for example. To be honest with you, when I get on an airplane and theres an arab aboared, I freak out a little. Another incident is how much shit my german teacher gets. Shes not the nicest lady, although she doesnt deserve being called a nazi. Lastly, african americans are sometimes viewd as thugs, violent, and dangers. I completely disagree, differernt colored skin shouldnt be the thing to judge a human. I wasnt sure if you wanted current incidents or ones from the play mr kay.

The person I found interesting was john proctor. I liked how he kept no secret at the end. He did not lie about others to save his ass. He put a fight up not even careing about his life. The message I take from this story would be "greety/sellfish and truth". I say this because a lot of the Crucible delt with greed etc. America will do whatever they can to get what they want. This shows just the behavior of Abigail in the story. John proctors afair with abigail showed sellfishness because abigail only cared about herself...in the end got here in trouble. John also did not lie at the end to show he was not self centered...thus still getting him killed but he was honored. John did confess but was still hanged, This was sadbecause he was honestly a good guy.

Mr.Kay,
For today's blog I will talk about technology. there are so many types of technology that I think it's causing our generation to be very lazy. The reason I think this is becasue we basically get everything handed to us. when we do aour math homework we dont have to worry if we dont know our mutiplication because we could just whip out our calculators. But I'm not saying that technology is a bad thing because it's not. I think that Technology has really helped us because we can cure deseases and learn more. I think that Technology is both a good think yet a not so good thing.

I found abigail to be very interesting in the play. ive probably wrote it before but i think its amazing how shes demanded so much power throughout the course of the play. the main concern of all the charcaters seemeed to be who can gain the most power. even though she was one of the youngest in saleem she had everybody fooled from day one. in regards to america i think this emits the moral of honesty. maybe a sub main point or theme could have been pride or personal values. john proctor strived for those things right before he died, he wanted to make sure he still had his name.

John Proctor really caught my attention in the play. He first caught me when we found out about his affair. I thought he was a better person that that. However, I quickly found out that he was rebounding from it and letting it go. He only wanted to love Elizabeth and he started being truthful again. Another incident in the play was when he was in jail for that long while. He was away from his family and hge really tried to keep his emotions in check. The final incident that made an impact on me was when he gave his life to protect his families name. He does not wish to put his wife and his three sons inthat position of where they are considered witches. This really demonstrates history because in this period of time, even the slightest bit of truth was shot down and people kept making random, false assumptions. From this character, I can take away that telling the truth always counts and to react well even in the worst situations. In today's society, there aren't that many bright spots and always keeping a positive attitude will help you along in like.

I found the Salem witch trials interesting. The thought that these occurred in America is astonishing.Of interest to me was when i was looking up information on the internet about the Salem witch trials Giles Corey name appeared.I learned that Giles was stoned to death before I read it in the play. When a person was accused of being a witch the accused were arrested ex. Rebecca, Martha, Tituba, Martha, Elizabeth, Sarah etc...Cheever and Herrick were in charge of making the arrests. There were a series of hearings followed by a court tial to prosecute the accused. Danforth was the deputy governor of Massachusetts that was in charge of the hearings. At the end of the play Danforth, Hale, and Parris tried to get Proctor to confess so they would not hang. John lied and confessed, however, would not give them the signed confession; he said "he gave him his soul; leave me my name". I can picture all of this happening.

Alexa said...

The person that I found interesting was also John Proctor. The first event that I like was when Abigail was saying how her and John got caught. That showed that not everyone in Salem is a goody to-shoe. The second event was in the court room. I found it very interesting when John tried to convince that Abigail was lying. It was Proctor against everyone else. The final thing that I like about Proctor was that he died for his town. Just like Giles and everyone else that died. I could never do that. He was a honest man and I believed that he loved his wife and kids. What he did for the town of Salem was needed to be done. I also like another part which was when he told Danforth that God witnessed his confession and that he did not need his name nailed on the church door. John is right when he said that he wants his name. It is true when your a man you only get one name. You never get another. So all in all we could get alot from John Proctor. He is a honest man and would die for what he believed in. Just like Martin Luther King Jr. Sign up tomorrow to do the march on monday.

The person that I found the most interesting to the story was John Proctor. In the beginning of the play John Proctor was seen as this unfaithful selfish character that only cared about himself. But towards the end of the play we started to see a different side of Proctor. He felt guilty about the affair with Abigail and tried to make it up with his wife by forgiveness. Also, by the very end of the play, Proctor showed us that he wasnt that selfish perosn that we thought he was. He stepped up, and didnt tell Danforth the names that he would accuse of being witches, because he thought that its wrong to be a snitch. Unfortunatly, he payed the price of death in the end. But he died knowing that he told the truth, instead of lieing to save his life.

I found the fact they everyone believed Abigail was interesting. In the beginign she got away with blaming it on Tituba, then Tituba got away with it by saying she was possed with the devil. She also got all the girls to do what ever she said to do which was amazing. When it came to the court she was able to pull off even more. She was able to blame Mary of witchcraft in the middle of court. By making everyone mimic what she was saying and having a invisible bird attacking her. She also made it seem that anyone who had a poppet was a witch because she stabbed a needle into herself. She went to drastic measures to keep everything the way she wanted it to. Because of that people have been hung and killed. Then she flees town because John calls her out for what she is a whore.

the person that is important in this play is john proctor. in the beginning of the story proctor seemed like the kind of person that would be unfaithful and untrustworthy. proctor is a guy that cheats on his wife and doesn't even care. later in the story proctor realizes that what he did was wrong, and he wanted forgiveness. in the court proctor did not want to tell any lie to get others in trouble. he is one person that sticks to his words. this play was alright but some of it did not make sense. i understood it, it's the language that they speak.

There are many events and people i could choose but ther was one event that caught my eye. This event was when Tituba got all the power because she said she knew others that are witches. This surprized me because just by saying that she basically went from bottom of the food chain to the top. Also, she could say any one she didn't like or bothered her and she was safe. One reason why this caught my eye related to history because that is how McCarthyism was. All you had to do was say that others were involved in communism and you were basically safe. Now, this affected i believe Sarah Good and Goody Osburn majorly. Many becasue they are arrested for witchcraft. Unfortunatley, this hurt her because Proctor at the end said he didn't want to be like tituba and just rat people out. Last thing is Tituba played a big role becasue she kind of was one of the people that started the whole ratting out process.

To me Giles stood out the most. The main reason I chose Giles was because everyone else is probably going to pick John Proctor. The main event that made me recognize this person was when he stood up for what he believed in at the end of the story. He would not say yes or no to if he was a witch. He would not rat anyone out and he got punished for it. It really stood out to be that he chose death over lying. Thia made me think that some people are willing to go to far lengths to stand up for what they believe in. The message that I took from this story would have to be that history always repeats it's self unless their is a force that acts upon it. In the beginning Giles said that he could not pray while hi wife was reading her books but never said that she was a with. At the end he decided to keep his mouth shut and took the pressing of profound boulders on his chest to get him to confess but he held his ground.

John Proctor was the one I found most interesting. He caught my attention because he was different from all the other people. Like before he was going to get hanged he had to sign a document and tell who the other witches are but he did'nt. How it made me think more deeply about the play by with its interesting characters. How it made me think deeply in history by if there even if there were witches back then and had a lot of stricter rules to. The message that I take from the story is not everybody is who they seem to be. Like when Mary Warren Turn her back on John Proctor because she kept her word to Abigail. Another event would be when he had to tell his wife abut his affair with Abigail.

I think the thing that found most interesting is that this happened in US history. I thought that is was pretty wierd that people thought that witches existed. I would never have thought that this happened in Massachusetts. This hole era must have been really important if we still talk about it today and a play was written about it. I found it interesting that they held witch trials that tried to figure out if people were part of witchcraft. I thought it was wierd how they handled this probelm, death. It was wierd that if you were guilty of it you would be hanged. People really thought differently then we do today as far as people being witches. The question I really ask is if witches really did exist back then and if people were really controlled by the devil.

Abby always fascinated me. She had an affair, which people still have those today. Well, im talking about the whole cheating aspect. The fact that she was actually 13, wow. This shocked me. Her being that young and having an affair with such an older man. But, this stuff still goes on in society. The cheating affected Elizabeth. It tore their marriage apart. In the end, i think its what made her not feel bad about johns hanging. The fact that he did cheat. Lastly, the fact that abby ran away on some boat. This affected the court and evidence. She would of gotten hanged if she was to stick around. Overall, she is a typical example of some women today.

A person who really caught my attention was John Proctor. At the beginning i first noticed him because he had an affair with Abigail Williams. And it kind of made me wonder why would he do that, he has 3 kids and a wife and he has an affair with a 17 year old (actually 13 in real life). He also caught my attention when he said how he didn't like Parris and that he rarely went to church. And a third reason why he caught my attention was because in the end he is a brave guy who has a good heart. He would die so other people wouldn't get called out. I think out of everything that showed how good of a person he really was. I was surprised to see him do that though because in the beginning you wouldn't think he would do that cause he cheated and everything. "The Crucible" as a whole really has a lot of whats going on now in the 2009. People get a bad thought put in there head and they just make it worse. They wont like a certain person because of their background. And people now are still selfish, if we had witch trials now i know people would turn on friends and blame them if it would save their life. I don't think that many people would be like John Proctor and die because he didn't snitch.I think that "The Crucible" really tried to show how greedy people now and back then were. I think its just a trait that every human has and probably wont change.

The person I found most intresting was Abigail. For some reason I just think she was such a diverse character. She was percieved as a liar but I understood why she did it. She loved John Proctor and she would do anything for the one she loved. She accused half the town of being Whitches, acted out in court, than left town because she was sick of it. I can understand how her feelings were hurt. John Proctor led her on and had his affair with her. It was only right that she was emotionally attached, I don't think she was heartless. Just a woman who wanted a man to love her and if anything the most emotional through out the book. I took from the play that even in the Puritans time when sin was terrible and people were perfect, they were not. They still cheated, lied, and killed for all the wrong reasons. As modern Americans today we can compare the crucible to a lot. In the crucible a lot of the characters were ignorant and could not seem to understand that racial profiling was not only unintelligent but very wrong on all levels. Today in society you see racial profiling all the time. For example after 9/11 people were so shaken up that they assumed just because you were from the middle east you were a terorist. While a person with any form of intelligence knows this is wrong it happens. When people are scared they resort to the silliest actions. Also when the Red Scare occured Communism was not even illegal but people were so scared everyone was a communist. The author of the Crucible was making fun of Communism at the time, showing everyone how ridiculous yet easy it was to go on a whitch hunt.

I felt as if the man whom caught my attention throughout the book was John Proctor. John took the character of the man in the beggining of cheating on his wife. This made many curious of his feelings torward witchcraft and the one he cheated on who was involved in witch craft, this was Abagail. John was also a man of his word. what ever it took he kept his word strong and did not socialize unless for good cause. Personally after completeing this play, i found that this compares to todays world in many ways. One main reason being the personalitys of people in the play and back then. Meaning these days people will also do what everit takes in order to keep them selves out of trouble. Wether they lie cheat or steal they act on what it takes.

The person that I found interesting is Danforth. He caught my attention because he is overzealous. He is the Deputy Governor of the witch trials. He cares more about his reputation than a fair trail. He cares more about getting witches executed than getting to the truth. In act 3 it established the fact that Danforth’s own role in the court concerns him more than the implications of the court’s actions. In act 4 he beleves that a delay in the executions will suggest he is weak and that he doubts his own judgments. When Nurse tells them that the girls have faked the entire witchcraft incident, the judges regard him as a dangerous individual. Public perception of himself concerns Danforth more than justice.

My favorite 'interesting' person was Mary Warren. I think that out of the girls used in Abigale's plot against Elizabeth Protor, she was hurt the most.

Upon the scolding from the 'alpha female', Mary harnessed problems caused by the 'curse', as well as her own. The stress of being on both sides of the fight pushes the poor girl to her limits.

I believe that Mary was the ONLY character that was actually poisoned by the molded Rye Bread. The hallucinations and dizzy spells(resulting in fainting) are symptoms of the molded bread.

I really liked this play....I WANNA WATCH THE MOVIE NOW. >:3 wahahaha! >:D

The person that I found the most interesting was John Proctor. The way that he stayed true to himself and what he beleieved in was amazing. He never gave into what others were doing and stayed to his heart. I think that if I were in his shoes in that position I would have done the same thing, hopefully. I know that I would never snitch on someone that did not do anything wrong in order to save my ass. This story shows how the governmanet should eally look into whether or not a person is being honest, or is lying in order to live in trials. Because if we kill or convict people that didnt do anything wrong, the people that DID do something wrong are getting away with wrongdoings.

In this play, I found John Proctor interesting. He caught my attention at first when he had his affair with Abigail. I thought he was a bad person at first because of this, but as time went on, and as I watched him closely, it turned out that he was one of only a few good guys. Another incident that caught my attention was when he admitted his affair to the court. This proved that he was willing to bring himself down if it meant bringing a larger organization down. Obviously, his plan backfired, but this sacrifice is an admireable triat in someone. Finally, the third incident that interested me was when he died to save his family and his name. He was preventing his family from any more trouble. He knew that if he confessed, he would have to accuse others, and he couldn't live with that burden. I think he did the right thing. He is a hero in my book. The message that all of this sends is that maybe it's best not to get involved in perilous situatuations.

John Proctor was the character that caught my attention in this story. He first caught my attention when the story talked about his affair. At first I thought poorly of him, but changed my mind when he ended the relationship with Abigail and tried to rebuild his relationship with Elizabeth. The incident with Proctor that caught my attention the most is at the end when John Proctor had to make the choice whether to lie or to stay with the truth. First, John Proctor decided to lie and save his life. Hale thought this was a good idea because he felt that it was better to lie than to waste the life God has given him. When Danforth told Proctor that he would hang he then changed his mind. He did not want his lie hanging for the town to see. One reason is he wanted to protect his family. Their name is all they have left, and if he were to take that away, they would have nothing. He also wanted to stay true to Rebecca Nurse and his other friends, he did not want to put the burden of the lie on them too. Even though it ended tragically, I think that Proctor chose the right thing to do. If he had lied I think he would have carried a heavy burden with him for the rest of his life and he would regret his decision. This story regards to America currently because it teaches the country that you cannot make assumptions based on poor or false evidence.

the most interesting person i would have to say is in this play john proctor. he never listened to wat others said, he stood for himself and his own feelings toward a situation. a moment that i thought caught my attention would have to be is when abby was trying to get him back, a lot of guys would cave and just go off and bangg her again i guess i could say. he knows he did wrong for cheeating on elizabeth and he wants to start over and devote his love to elizabeth and i respect that, everyone has temptations i guess. but when she wanted to kill elizabeth that totally turned him off, so he got accused even tho he was innocent. this story in many different ways, like in the McCarthy thing, people were gettting blamed for being a commy, they didnt get killed but theyd prolly wana get killed bc theyd be in "deep shit" if they got caught or if someone accused them.

What is the message that you take from this story in regards to it application to us as Americans currently? To get the points for today, you must refer to 3 incidents and those impacts on the event or the person you have chosen.

The first person that i found interesting is reverend parris. When i first looked at the time period for this i thought that the men would be very moral and polite. However he only thought about himself. I thnik that reverend parris connects to history because i think that some leaders were just looking out for themselves, just like Parris. currently some people think of the bush administration as corrupt. was one of the main points of his presidency just for his company to make so much money on foreign oil? I think this connects to the story because parris is losing his credibility as a reverend. I think that when parris neice and daughter were being convicted as withces, he shouldve dropeed everything and helped them. But he didnt, he continued to care about nothing or annyobdy except himself. Lastly, i see Rev. Parris as someone who wants a job or position just for the status. Was he really a good reverend for the town of salem, or did he choose this job to be the center of attention.

i thnik i did this correctly. but not sure.

She had an affair with john Proctor and got away with it. she started the whole problem of accusing people of witchcraft by dancing and drinking a charm to kill Goody Proctoro. however she still seemed to get out of trouble. everyone looked to her for answers and she had a lot of power. even the girls follow what she does in the court room so it looks like Mary- Warren is a witch. when she made this mess she all of a sudden just disappears and leaves to get away from the problem. this can relate to some people in our worl today. they trick people into believing in them and get something out of it and when something goes wrong the just up and leave or blame it on someone else.

A character in the play that really caught my attention was John Proctor. First of all, when we first read that John was/had an affair with Abigail Williams, it made me really mad. No one should every cheat on the one's they care for. My first impression of him was that he was a cheat and didn't care about anyone but himself. As the story grew on I began to grow to John Proctor and realize what his intentions were and were not. Secondly, when John cut off the affair with Abigail, is when I started to like him more. It was very bold of him to do that, most men would just keep it going until their wife confronts them about it. Not John, he knew it was wrong and that he shouldn't cheated, even though Elizabeth wasn't a very warming welcome wife. Then lastly, when Abigail and Mary Warren ganged up on Elizabeth and farmed her by putting a needle into a poppet, she hasn't collected in years, is when I felt John really started to stand up. He didn't want to see his wife go, they just working things out with the affair. Then later he realized that Abigail had to do with the incident of Elizabeth being in jail, he lost it, and attacked her. Which entirely wasn't bad because she deserved it, and abused her powers she had over the towns people. A message that I have received from this play is that you should never take what you have for granted, because once it's gone, your going to wish you did things differently. What American do frequently, is that when they are lucky enough to receive something they want, they do not value it like they should. I think that not only me, but everyone should start to appreciate what we have. We all just assume it will always be there, but in reality it will not. Just like in the play Elizabeth lost John, and she couldn't stop him, but she knew he died being a good man. A man that she took for granted, and loved.

I think it amazing that this story is based on true events. I did not know this until after reading the story. I think the fact that that this stuff actually happened makes it alot more interesting. The character that most intrigued me to the story was John Proctor. The incident that made me most interested was when I found out that him and Abigail were having an affair. Another thing was when he confessed to his wife that he was having an affair. And that last thing that made me interested in John was when he died for something he believed in. This made me give him mad respect.

One person that caught my attention in the play was Abigail. She caught my attention shen she started lying and threatening the other girls. It made me think about what people would do for power. In the play, the judges were always on her side and believed everything she said. It was like that in the red scare too. If someone of high power said you were a communist then you were one and there was no questions. Miller show us that this is wrong and there should be justice and people shouldn't go crazy. Three events that impacted Abigail were Proctor ending the relationship and calling her a child, Mary Warren making Elizabeth a poppet, and Proctor and Mary saying she was lying about everything in court. Proctor ending the relationship made Abigail want Elizabeth dead which is why the whole thing started and Mary Warren making a poppet helped her find a way to do it. Abigail made an evil plan to stab herself and blame it on Elizabeth and get her in jail. Proctor and Mary saying she was lying made Abigail even more mad and she blackmailed Mary Warren into going with her again.

The person that i want to write about is Rebecca Nurse. She was my favorite character out of everyone. Even though she was accused and blamed for being a baby killer she still said that she was not a witch. She didn't care if she died, she wasn't about to lie to save herself, she wanted to stay with her faith until the end. Nurse was asked if she was going to confess and she said it would be a lie and that she cannot. I have the most respect for her because this takes a lot of courage. When she was accused for killing goody putnams children at birth she was just a person to blame. She didn't really kill them she was a midwife and putnam needed an excuse. She was sent to death because of this. At the end nurse found out that john was confessing and she still didn't change her choice. She was the best character and i learned the most from her.

Something I found interesting in the play was how well it can relate to todays world even though it happened many many years ago. This is proof that history repeats itself and generation after generation people forgot what happened and before they know it it's happening again. The whole idea of McCarthyism fits perfectly on the subject of the Salem Witch Trials as well as many current things that have happened today. In The Crucible, the people who are accused of being witches are "guilty until proven innocent." It was the same way with McCarthy. People who were accused of being communist were also "guilty until proven innocent."Some people were accused just for reading a certain type of magazine. I think this reflects on today's world in many ways. After the 9/11 incident, I think that many people have changed the way they look at Arabs these days. Because of this, racial profiling has become a huge problem. I know that sometimes I get a little worried. I thought that it was amazing that an event that old could be incorporated in todays world as well as it is.

The person i found most interesting was Giles. Throughout the story i also began to respect him the most. At first Giles caught my attention, but for the wrong reasons. I didn't like how he told Hale that his wife was reading books. I didn't like how Giles in a way accused his wife and condemned her to witchcraft. Though i don't believe that was his intension's. Later in the play he goes to court to defend his wife, and to try to put an end the hysteria. When Proctor, Mary and him entered the courtroom they altered the all mighty belief in the judge. I believe this was the incident that caused witch trials to end. But the most impacting part of the story for me is when Giles was pressed to death. In order to stay a legal Christian and to give his family his house and possessions he could neither admit to witch craft or deny it. The fact that he did not answer them when he was being pressed and took the pain for his family was extremely heroic. Like you said in class today, about Muslims after 9/11 how a slight bit of McCarthyism was starting to repeat itself. Thats why this story is such an important piece. Hundreds of years later and it still applies to our generation. After reading this story i believe that i wont jump so quickly to conclusions. That i will try and hear both sides of every story before judging.

For me, I found the events that took place in the story more interesting than the individual characters. For instance, it amazes me how easily a person can receive power. Tituba, for example, almost instantly goes from being powerless to having great power just by admitting to witchcraft. She is able to accuse any person she wants without any reasoning other than that she saw them with the devil. Then, I find it amazing how a teenage girl can influence the courts so much. She basically controls the courts, because she is the court's only proof to back up the accusations. Abigail controls the court, the group of girls, and who is a witch. I find it amazing how Abigail does not get put into jail, yet others who confess to witchcraft, such as Sarah Good, do. Then, people in the court system such as Danforth abuse their power. The court followed the "guilty until proven innocent" idea, just as they did in the McCarthyism era. If a person was accused, they were a witch, and there was no proof needed to charge them. If they confessed, or lied, they lived. If they stood up for what they believed, they were killed. In simple terms, I think that this play blatantly shows how stupid people can be. We never quite seem to learn from our mistakes, and that is why negative history always seems to repeat itself. Miller is trying to warn every generation from the day he wrote this story to start to see patterns and try to stop problems before they become another negative time in history.

Mr. Kay,
I think a person who I think is pretty interesting was Abigail. The way Abigail just intrigued me is her devotion toward hurting the people around her. This was showed off when she was first trying to expose Tituba. She tried so hard to lie her way out of her the situation, though Tituba fought back, she still succeeded. After that, she became much more devious and started going after Elizabeth. She tried so hard to get her in trouble. This is all out of the devotion to get John Procter. Closer to the end, she also tries to sabotage Mary Warren. She makes up this huge ruse where she expects all the girls, along with her, to pretend there is a bird which is Mary Warren. She really goes all out for this one. She is a perfect actress and the girls around her do a perfect job supporting her and it is perfect for her. The message I get from this play is that rumors and deception can ruin a society. If the idea of "witchcraft" was never brought up, none of this would never happen. Also the deceit people bring upon is also disastrous. The people sell out their friends and such and also, if that never happened, again no one would be hanged. Abigail starts all of these rumors and sells out people like Tituba, so she is like the match for all of these problems. This is what I think of Abigail.

I think a very interesting character was John Proctor. When i think of the 1600's in America i would think all people were the same, very strict and closed minded. John in the story in certain ways rebelled. When he told Parris what he thought about him, and told the court the girls were liars, it was cool to see one normal character. John also had an affair with Abigail, and was starting to lose love for his wife, Elizabeth. But he realized it was wrong and Abigail meant nothing to him. This expirience made him be the honest man he was all along and fix his family. Lastly, John gave his life just for the sake of his good name. He felt he should not have to confess to a crime he did not commit, or give others names. Importantly, he didn't want people to see his name confessing to something as bad as witchcraft. This story is really interesting because these things did happen. I cant believe America, the freedom counrty, would kill innocent people without even giving them a chance. A lot of things change over time.

John Proctor caught my attention in the play. Proctor first caught my attention when I found out that he doesnt go to church. This was intersting to me because I dont either so I can relate. Another incident was when we found out he had an affair with Abigail. I think that he realized he made a mistake and he would not do it again if he could go back. The last incident that struck me was when he hanged to save his family name. He would have confessed verbally, but did not want his family named scarred with witchcraft forever. I think proctor made me realize that not everyone back then was a "perfect puritan". Even they broke the rules sometime. The message its sending is dont be to quick to judge. This relates to america now because it shows you can not judge or accuse based off false evidence.
