Today, we discussed why we read, to gain an understanding of man (and woman), how we create our perceptions and how those perceptions cause us to view others.
For tonight, pick a book, a movie or an historical event where perceptions caused conflict. Explain how this conflict could have been better handled if these perceptions were not created. Finally, discuss something that you have perceived one way only to find out that it was another.

I think enslavement of africain americains was a big event in history on perception. As a race we enslaved black people because we considered them inferior. Because they didn't have the same language as us or clothing. We used what we considered out advantage to enslave them and have them do things for us and if they dont we killed them. If they tried to run away or learn to read we killed them. On my part my perception has lead me to think difrently of some people. I met a few people this year who I thought were a little weird or stupid who turned out to be pretty cool and smart. Also that my sister may have had some common sense but after these last few months I think completely difrently. She has slowly declined saying stupider things everyday.

In the movie step brothers, the hole plot of the movie was dale and brennen fighting. Such as the beggining of the movie. Both of the characters perseived that one another were just a loser and no good. After learning more about each other and gaining trust, and realizing that they were almost the same person. Dale and Brennen learned that they were meant to be. They had the same exact interests, beliefs, hobbies, and so on. Evan examples like this show how persieving someone or something by rumors, beliefs, or anything is not always the right or correct way of grading that thing. One major quote that everybody shall always remember is that "you shall never judge a book by its cover".
In my life percieving someone or thing has taken a big toll in judging it. Evan the smallest things such as food for example. All my life, i have always heard and been told that broccoli is so nasty. Being persieved in the belief that this food is so nasty i never ate it until about 3 years ago. Sticking the broccoli in my mouth all i could think of is all the rumors and beliefs on the nasty taste of broccoli. When i finally started chewing on it all i could then think of is the crazyness in every person who ever thought that broccoli was nasty. Until this day, i think back on all the remarks made about broccoli and wonder why everyone could say that. Once again never judge a book by its cover, and the same with everything else never say its bad or believe what you have heard until you have seen it with your own eyes.

A major event in history that was created by perception was the era of the Civil Rights movement. Even after African Americans were free from slavery, they were not treated equally. There were laws permitting that they were allowed to be separated from whites, and took away rights that whites were allowed. This was a major conflict in perception. Many white people knew that African Americans were equal, and treated them so. However, there was just as many who thought differently, that they were above African Americans just because of their race. This caused major conflicts such as strikes, police raids, and riots, which led to the deaths of many innocent people who were standing for their rights. If the perception that one race is best was eliminated, then these things could have been avoided. Sometimes I perceive people to be one thing, and it turns out they are completely different. I goes to show that you shouldn't judge people before you get to know them.

I'd like to talk about a tragedy, Korean War, could be said it's occurred by perceptions. When the Cold War's affect was storming around the world, there was no exception in my own country, Korea. After Korea became an independent country, it had to be divided into North Korea, which was ruled over by the Soviet Union, and South Korea, which was administered by the Union countries such as the United States. The thing was, at that time, common people didn't even know why they were being ruled by other countries. However, with a Korean's characteristic of listening to straightforwardly and a reason of being not educated-since the situation was disorderly agitated-, people straightly listened to their government, which was being helped, therefore, which had to follow the foreign governments. Then, the Korean War broke out, by the conflicts of different two ideologies. Guessing from the people's knowledges at that time, it's hard for me to believe that, the tragic bravery to kill the people of same nation, was derived from people's conviction or belief in one of two different ideologies, but the perception that they heard from their government. Falsely created perception is a deception. If the people had opportunities to make their own decisions on their own truly-made logics, how would such a war that had no reason for the fighters have lasted for 3 years?
Before I came to America, as an exchange student, what I'd heard about America was; There are more gun shops than gas stations, more than half of Americans are corpulant, and so forth. Then when I first came here, I got startled. Where're the fatties? Where's the gun shop? The information I learned about foreign countries, like America, was only statistical, which was true but not what I thought. As a short answer for the question during 6th hour class "Why Americans have to learn foreign languages?", I'd say, "a language is directly related to the country's culture and learning another country's culture improves your ability to think and way to perceive and accomodate different cultures".
when i think of perceptions taking over and causing a conflict, i think of when african americans were discriminated against. that whole prejudice that started seems so stupid now. so many people are different in the world so why would you single out one specific kind? this conflict could have been better handled or even totally avoided by not judging people by the color of their skin. like the example mr kay gave today when he was talking about his sister who was in college and when the people they were talking to found out they were jewish, they flipped out. for an example of something i have percieved wrong would be when i was little i thought duct tap was called duck tape. then awhile later i was so surprised to find out that i was saying it wrong the whole time.

In the movie shallow hollow is a great movie where is shows perceptions, and the way people view eachother. It is about a guy who has been put on a spell that only made him see the beauty that was within not on the outside. He meets the nicest girl and he sees her as a really hot chick. But she really isn't the best for looking. The main character meets many girls but he only sees the inside of them. So all the chicks that he meets seem reallly hot. This movie is a good example of society and how people expect ither people to look like. When people fist meet someone who doesn't make societys standards they tend to look aways. People make perseptions on people when they don't even know them. People should focus on getting to know people and there personality. They shouldn't make perceptions right away. I sometomes tend to make judgements of other people. I once meet this kid who was a really mean looking big dude. This guy looked like a person who could probably eat you. I got to know him and started to talk wiht him. I found out that he was a very nice and funny guy. We got along great and I was compelety wrong about my first perception.

I think a historical event that caused conflict due to perception is the 9/11 terrorist attack. This attack made a huge impression on Americans and how they viewed Iraq, Afghanistan, and Iran people. From that day forward, most Americans perceived these people as terrorists. I know that when I am on a plane and I see ethnic groups such as Iran and Iraq that I start getting a little worried and scared. I know its not true that all of these people are terrorists but its just the way that our mind works. If these perceptions were not created, there would be minimal discrimination against Iraqi's and less racial profiling. One thing that I always perceived as stupid and kinda gay was golf. I always thought that golf was the dumbest sport ever but once I tried it I thought otherwise. Now that I have played golf, I can't get enough of it. I play almost everyday in the summer now.

In the movie Four Christmases caused conflict with perceptions. The two main characters wanted to go to Figi for Christmas but they couldn't because of the fog. So they had to go to see each of their parents which they didn't want to do. They really didn't want to spend time with their families because they thought they were dorkey and wired. After a while they said to themselves this is not so bad and I should visit more often. Something that I perceived was going in to high school. I thought it was going to be bad but it turned out all right.

I will be talking about 9/11 and the typical views americans have on middle east people. When 9/11 happened, people started to think differently about middle easterns, especially iraq people. When the funny thing is, that the alkidas were the ones that were mainly behind the bombing. So now america thinks that every middle eastern looking person is a terrorist, or might be part of a plan to kill us. I think it could of been handled better if people werent so quick to judge. If only people could step back and look at the fact that many people are innocent. Also, that just because your a certain race, doesnt mean your necessarily bad. I myself judged middle eastern looking people. But now i realize that people should be given a fair chance, no matter what race they are.

Mr. Kay,
I think people see or do something with perception everyday. In Spider-Man 3, the Sandman his a pretty depressing back story that makes you rethink your perception about him. He is a person who escaped from jail and his wife doesn't want him to see his daughter. That's all he wants to do is see his daughter but his problems that continue brings Spider-man to come and fight him. So most people would say that he is a bad man for his his actions, but they are all to benefit his daughter. That is why I think that overall he is not a bad person, but most would say he is a bad man. I guess if these perceptions weren't there, then no one would try and stop him, thus letting his daughter and him live a happy life. I am sure if say they just let him rob a bank once, I know it wouldn't happen again. So for the small amount of missing money, everything would be for the better. This same thing happened with Spiderman himself. He wasn't percieved to be a proper citizen when he started fighting crime. In fact J. Jameson wanted him to be exposed when this happened. I think that New York would overall be a safer place if people just let him do what he was doing. Just like anyone else, I can look at a person and think something of them, but then I can find out they are the complete opposite. I also know many people have talents that if I saw the person on the street, I wouldn't expect. So, you can see examples in everyday life, or you can even see them in Peter Parker's life.

Perceptions remind me of when blacks weren't treated equally, around the time with Martin Luther King Jr. They were thought of as less than whites. The hatetred towards blacks were passed down from generation to generation. They were thought of as being completely different than whites, but in reality, they whites and blacks were pretty much the same. Even if a black person was more qualified for a job, the job would have atumaticly be given to the white. A person could handle this better by looking out for the good of the business, and pick who would be better. For me, sometimes when I get a first impression, I can sometimes write them off as annoying or someone who would make a good friend. Once I wrote off someone as annoying and we got paired up for an assignment. Soon, I relized that we had a lot of fun together and became close friends.

There was one movie that popped into my head when i saw what we had to blog about, that movie is Waterworld. In the movie the earth is flooded and the main part of the movie is on a flooding city, the city is filled with "normal people". One day a vistor comes to the city and trades with the local and plannes on leaving but his grills are exposted showing everyone that he is a mutant. Suddently he is put in a cage just beacaue he is differnt and is a mutant, they didnt even know the guy, all they though was that all mutants are bad. If they had just got to know him instead of jumping to the conclustion that he is bad, beacause he was a mutant, he could have gone free. Something that i perceived was that smokers where bad people and that if you smoked then you were mean or stupid. But after meeting more people i noticed that most are nice and it is their life, if smoking is what they want to do then its only hurting them.

Movie: Jungle 2 Jungle (Tim Allen)
Book: Peach Girl comic series.
In the books, Peach Girl, the main character, Momo(Peach), is a tanned swimmer for the school's swimming team. She is the Protagonist. The Antagonist is a small, 'weak', 'innocent' underclassman Sae(Sai).
Throughout the first two books(each 200 or so pages long), Sae continuously causes unstoppable chaos upon Momo's life. From ruining her social status, to stealing her dream boy, Sae shows no signs of committing these crimes.
The duration of the three beginning books contain the basic problems Momo encounters, along with the crowd perceptions of Momo's personality around Sae. Every time they are in a crowd, the little antagonist would cause a scene after provoking Momo's wrath.
The school is blindly lead by Sae to think that the swimmer is a violent person, striking out at the underclassman when she didn't get what she wants. It was only 'til the beginning of the fourth book does the school realize Sae's disgustingly true colors. All she was obsessed with was power, and making others suffer. The students were horrified of their mistakes, and begged for forgivness from Momo, who could blame no one. It wasn't their fault that Sae behaved that way.
"It's only natural to assume the Lion hurt the Deer."
I think the problem could have been avoided earlier if Momo had called Saw out on her little schemes, and cleared up the whole thing by not being such a pushover.

P.S. Peach Girl is a 13+ comic. The conflict is possible, and I couldn't put it down! :D There are 8 books of the first series, and 12 or more of Peach Girl: Change of Heart. It's really good, but, like I said, it has a Young Adult rating in every library.
The beginning of the Civil war the cause of the Secession at first was new territories slowly leaning toward becoming free soils. A paranoia thought flew that The government was gradually becoming to enforce free-slave enactments. This had a Feeling to Secede. Over the next few years, these feelings slowly grew stronger and strong with each political event fueling ambitions. The final act of Secession was when Lincoln was elected, when all he wanted to was stop the expansion of slavery in newer states, the south perceived it as getting rid of slavery all together! Then 11 States Seceded(There is no other word for it)* after his election. Before the opinions had been finally cleared,it was too late to enter the Union. This triggered a massive war that cause the most American losses in history.
I also thought the same thing with the
"Getting rid of slavery" issue, apparently 3nd grade teachers are less accurate than Wikipedia! In all actually, Lincoln didn't want to end slavery at all! He knew the economy in the south would take a beating but he needed a little more soldiers and thought it was the easiest way to bring the Union back.
*I've said that soo many times! It irradiates me!
If anyone know, the beard that Lincoln had was only in his campaign because a little girl commented his face looked rather thin. His image is slapped in history something he had only 6 months.

Anything that has to do with segregation and unfair treatment is an example of when perceptions caused conflict. An event that sticks out in my mind is the Civil Rights movement. Obviously, the whites looked at the situation differently than the blacks. But, the blacks were the minority so their opinions were overpowered by the whites. The whites didn't think they were doing anything wrong (for the most part), and the blacks disagreed completely. If no perceptions were created in this event in history, all the fighting and protesting could have been avoided. An example of when I perceived something one way, but it was another is when I was sure I was right about an answer on a group project, but other people had different opinions on it. It turns out they were right and I was wrong. It shows you that you shouldn't jump to conclusions.
Mr. Kay,
In the movie Jumper, David Rice has the power to jump from any place in the world to where ever he wants. When David realizes that there are people trying to kill him because of his extreme talent, he automatically think that they are trying to kill him because he has stollen from banks. But he was wrong, they are called "zealots". The leader of the Zealots klan has the technology and skill that's used to capture David before he could jump to another place. David asks why he is trying to kill him, that he hasn't done anything wrong. The klan leader tells David that he is going to hurt people, and that only God should have that sort of power. David had a different perception on why he was trying to be killed. As for a time in my life that I have perceived something wrong, it would be when I thought that my life would be so much funner if I didn't do my homework. I was so wrong. I found out that if I get my homework done in class and do it right, then I have alot more time to do what I want at home. Plus I am not getting in trouble because of my grades. It's a whole different feeling.

The historical event dealing with Mcarthyism shows how perseption cuased conflict. Only if people wern't so peranoied then this would have never happened. People went around saying that everyone is bad that is communist because thats what they thought was bad. If people didn't go around accussing inoccent people of being communism then a lot of people wouldn't have been hurt. This could have been better handeled if the people had evidence of these people being communist and didn't make such a big deal of communism. Instead of just saying they were cuz they didn't like that person.
To me, one time i thought that this kid on my hockey team was a bad person cuz his dad was in prison. I found out later that he was a very nice kid who i could have had a friendship with but precieved he was bad cuz of something he didn't even do.
This reminds me of the time where African American's were discriminated against. They were not treated like they should of been. They're just people like we are, but back then people were to shallow and caught up in what everybody else believed they thought that they weren't like everyone else. It was like no one had their own opinion back then, they believed what everyone else did because it was considered "right". Which in theory is was not correct. If there was ever a situation where a black and a white applied for a job, even if the black person was more applicable for the job, it wouldn't matter, they white would receive the job by one look. As for my perception people aren't what you think they are. You'll never truly know a person unless you take the time and chance to get to know them. Who knows, maybe they'll surprise you, and turn out to be much more than what you expected.

9/11 was a major historical event that had perceptions on both sides. After 9/11 most americans had a fear of middle eastern people. A lot of these fears came along due to there culture and beliefs. We think there ways of life go against our morals and they think that our ways are bad too. This could have never lead to war if we all got along. We should not care how other people live there lives.
For a wile I myself had a fear of middle eastern people. I thought they were going to kill us all. Now that I realize most of them are friendly people and share close interests, I'm not afraid. this shows we should not put perceptions on other people.
The terrorist attacks on 9/11 seem to have many different perceptions. First of all, the Middle east is completely misunderstood because 90% of these people were not involved. The Middle East wasn't even a concern in our minds except for oil. The US perceived the Middle East as a stable region. However, shortly as the attacks occured, everybody lived in fear of the Mid East or really hated them. The US saw this as a threat whereas the 90% of Mid Easterners saw this as something horrible. The problem is that we are killing off innocent people over a war against very few. America perceived this attack as something that was meant to destroy us as a nation and take away our national power. As you now see, everyone is catious of Arabic people and people who appear to from the Middle East. If these perceptions were not created the situation would not have ever erupted. The Middle East demanded respect and the US ignored them until they finally reached their breaking point. The US should not have seen this as anything different because it seemed as though we had it coming. There wouldn't be a "War on Terror" if there weren't any perceptions. Nobody would have even gotten killed. However I am one of those people who really doesn't trust people like that so it's tough to argue about it.
One incident that I perceived wrong was the incident between friends and people at school. Sometimes I hear about someone and I make bad judgements about them and I never give them a second chance. However, I am trying to stop being like that and be more open minded.

Perception is shown in many movies, books and historical events. A movie that I think perception is shown well is "The Longest Yard" with Adam Sandler, Chris Rock and Burt Reynolds. The movie is seen through the eyes of a convict named Paul Crew (Adam Sandler). Throughout the movie the warden convinces Paul to put together a football team of cons to play a team of guards. The cons are provided with very poor equipment and Paul has to work very hard to get a decent team on the field. Right before the big game Care taker (Chris Rock, the teams manager) is killed by one of the cons who was told to do so by the guards. After that the Cons play the Guards in a big game of football. At first all the fans are cheering for the Guards. But then some of the fans start cheering for the Cons because the guards are playing dirty and taking cheap shots. This shows perception because at first people were cheering against the cons because they have done something bad when in actuality some of the guards are just as bad as the cons. The perception of the fans changes as the game goes on as they see how the guards are playing. The cons keep playing hard and they turn out to win the game. Perception is also shown in the children's story "The True Story of the 3 Little Pigs". This story is shown form the side of the wolf how it was an accident how he killed the three little pigs. Perception is shown in almost everything, everyone has a different way they saw a story and that it is why it is so hard to solve serious crimes.

I think a historical event that caused conflict was the terroist attacks. The reason I chose this is because once this happened many people started to believe that Arab people were bad people. The whole reason of that came about becasue some Arab people are the ones who hijacked the planes and then crashed them. People were even afraid to go on planes after that happened because of the fear of being hijacked. Thats one event were I think percception caused conflict. Something that I have perceived one way and later found it was another would probably be people that I have met. During the beginng of the year I saw some people who I thought were kind of wierd. It turns out that those people were in my classes and I began to talk to them. Over the course of talking to them I thought they werent so wierd after all and I now I am their friend.

In to Kill a Mockingbird many perceptions had been created. One example was Tom Robinson was black and he was not good enough for those around. He had been blamed for the rape of a girl, because it was easier than blaming anyone else. Because at the time people perceptions of black people was off a lot, people thought he was guilty. Another example from the novel would be Boo. He was thought to be scary by all the neighborhood children. They had created this perception of him being a bad person. While in the end it was Boo himself who saved the day. Tom Robinson also was an innocent man who had never done anything wrong in his life, besides be born with perceptions already built around him.
The one historical event where perceptions have caused conflict that comes to mind is probobly around the slavery time. This is back in the era for the Civil Rights movement. African americans were seen as just slaving for white people and less worthy in life. Even after the Thirteenth Amendment was passed prohibiting slavery, people always thought black and white people werent necesarily equal. So this caused white and black people to have differnt laws against eachother. This was a major conflict and misunderstanding of perception. If these perceptions werent created, then there wouldnt have ever been discrimination or racism against african americans. I truly belive in the statement dont judge a book by its cover. Because you dont know somebody until you get to know them better.

The perception that I thought would ber good for this blog was from the new movie Nortorious. In the movie it talks about the rap wars. East Coast and West Coast. Now in the movie Tupac got shot while at the Bad Boys recording studio. Tupac assumed that Biggie set him up. I think that if Tupac would not have assumed that Biggie set him up. That he might still be alive today. If Tupac didn't put the blame on Biggie then the rap wars would not have started. One perception that I had was my grades. I thought that if I could slack off. I thought that I could pull it off in the end. I thought way wrong. Now I know that I need to work on my grades all semester. Not just the last week.
A movie that comes to mind is Shawshank Redemption. This is my favorite movie of all times. This film was about a man that was accused of killing his wife and her lover. Andy spent two decades in prison for a crime he did not commit. He was convicted on circumstantial evidence. While in prison one of Andy's cell mates tells him of another person he had met at another prison that confessed t okilling two people that fit the description of his wife and loved; the man said a banker was convicted (that would be Andy). Andy thought he would get a new trial, howevev, he had helped the warden and guards with some scams and they afraid he would tell. He eventually escaped from prison. Andy was judged becausse he was the husband, the most obvious person to have done the killing. An incident I perceived was when my wallet came up missing. I accused my sister of doing something with it. Later my wallet was found in the washer. Before making judgement you should have all the facts.
A great example fo perception is the movie vantage point. The president of the US gets shot and the movie is based off different people views. Seeing a different side of a story from another persons view really changes your overall impression on the movie. I think the these perceptions helped the conflict, rather than making it worse. If the other peoples views werent show, I wouldve never understood the whole story behind shooting the president. A time when my perception was changed was when two of my friends were fighting. I didnt really know the whole story but made accuasations. My friends later told me their point of view and I understood the situation better.
deets
I think there are multiple times in movies, books and history that show perception. One of the biggest was probably the african american problem right after slavery. I say this for a few main reasons. One is because anyone that owned slaves thought that they were nothing but pieces of crap. To go with that they thought they were a waste of space if they weren't working for them. Plus many resturants wouldn't let blacks go into the resturant. Unfortunately resturants weren't the only things, stores, businesses and more did the same thing. Last blacks at that time were thought of basically as helpers in farms and nothing else. If perceptions weren't created then everyone would have a fair shot at anything. Plus people would think they are nothing but normal people and probably be friends with them.

One conflict that was caused by perceptions was 9/11. A small group of middle eastern people hijacked a plane and killed the people on that plane. After that most of the United States was afraid of Middle Eastern people. But why, because a small group of people did something bad. Its not fair to automatically judge people just on their backgrounds. If people wouldn't have perceived them as a threat, we might not have had the War on Terror. One way I perceived something and later found out that it was different was when I met some people a few years ago and I thought they were weird. But as I got to know them I found out they weren't weird at all, and now were friends.

When Germany was in an economic depression in the 1930's they looked for a way out. The only reason they could find for the economic downfall was to put the fault on the Jewish community. Doing this they altered perceptions of Jewish people. Arian races were led to believe they were the superior race and the Jewish community was at fault for all of their problems. So the Jewish community was put into concentration camps for committing crimes they couldn't have been held accountable for. If Germany found a reasonably way to pull the country out of debt instead of using a scape goat, many perceptions of the Jewish community would not be the same. We are all guilty for perceiving someone or something the wrong way. So i was at cheerleading practice in 6th grade, and i only knew a few other girls on the team. but there was this one girl, who happened to be the coaches daughter that i distinctly remember thinking that she was a big time bitch. now fiveish years later shes my best friend.

A book/movie that had perceptions causing conflict was To Kill A Mockingbird. Scout and her brother thought that Boo Radley was an evil ghost but really he was a nice guy. Their perceptions caused conflict when they were spreading rumors about him and people were believing them. They could have handled the situation better if they had told the truth or tried to get to know him instead of spreading lies.
One time that I have preceived things is when dealing with a couple of girls at my church. I had always thought they were annoying and weird. Recently, I got the chance to know them and found that they're actually pretty nice and easy to get along with.
For tonight, pick a book, a movie or an historical event where perceptions caused conflict. Explain how this conflict could have been better handled if these perceptions were not created. Finally, discuss something that you have perceived one way only to find out that it was another.
I think that the historical event that caused a conflict in perception was the attack on pearl harbor. I think that the united states overreacted on the innocent people. I think that the United states shitted on these people by putting them in these camps. I think that this caused some conflict between the americas and japanese. \I think that if the united states would have let them alone it wouldve rudeced the conflict with the government but it wouldnt have helped with other people. I think that the american people unfortunately would have been predujiced and done bad things to these people. And a perception in my life that was led no to be true was what i always thought about curves for my hockey stick. I know this sounds weird but it is a real thing for hockey players. I always hated a curve called forsberg and wondered how people with it coiuld shoot. It was only until my stick broke and i had to use a forsberg curve. I loved it, and now its the only thing ive used for 2 years.

i think that the movie pocahontas goes along with this blog. I think this because when the white men start to come to take over the native americans land, they both think of each other badly. I havent seen this mmovie in a while, but the one fat white man that thinks hes the boss, he calls all the native americans savages, and other bad names. The native americans arent even bad..Then pocahontas meets john smith (a white male) they fall in love, while her father wants her to mary another guy. anyways my point is they are judging everyone by looks and believes while john smith and pocahontas know that they are all good deep down inside.
in my life, i was told to never judge someone. as a girl, i see things differently from guys, and we all know that. but in girl world it sucks really if you want it to. what i mean is that many girls always talk trash, and try to make others feel like shit bc they dont look pretty or they arent as hott. i try to stay away from them i go with the flow and do what i want. i know who my true friends are and everyone should do what they belive like john smith and pocahontas did.

Im gonna do step brothers. Both of the characters Dale and Brennen perseived that one another were just a loser and no good to the family. They were always fighting about something. After a while the found out they had alot incommon. They had the same exact interests, beliefs, hobbies, ect. After that they became best friends. There are many things that i preceived that i dont think i should have. Like people for example. sometimes if someone is different from me i think there a little weird and i might not talk to them. Just for they way they dress, what they look like, who they hang out with, and even what they eat. I dont think its was right for me to do this but i didnt know. Once i found out who they really are they are like the one of the nicest people i have ever met.
In the movie glory road everyone felt that black kids weren't capable of playing big time college basketball. No one thought that it was a good idea to have black kids on their team. One person thought that he would recruit five black player. Everyone soon saw how black players could play with white players. The team ended up going to the NCAA tournament and beat Kentucky for the champioship. If the perception that black kids couldn't play with white wasn't seen this way, there would have been a lot more black kids in the NCAA. It doesn't matter what color your skin is, all that matters is if you can play. A perception that I saw in my life that was completely opposite was yesterday. I thought that when we played Mott that they were terrrible. Everyone on my team thought we had the game won, but we ended up losing.
perceptions are not put upon you when you are born into this world but they are created and formed as you grow older and learn new things. sometimes perceptions can change or they will always stay the same. they can either have a postitve or negative impact on you and people around you. in the movie Mean Girls there are a lot of peceptons that students have about eachother. there is this girl, Janice, who had a rumor started about her in middle school and people made fun of her so much she dropped out of school but went back when highschool started. everyone still thinks she is wierd and no one talks to her. the funny thing is when Katy, this new girl that has a high "popularity potential", moves there her first friend is Janice. she didn't have a perception of Janice before she got there so she got to know her and she was actually really nice. people look at things in different ways all the time.
A book where perceptions cause conflict is in the Twilight series. There is a group of vampires who have chosen to live their life without killing any humans. Then, there is a group of werewolves who's purpose in life is to protect humans from vampires. The werewolves have had a bad perception of the vampires since a different vampire killed many people in their village many years ago. The vampires who are living in town don't want to kill humans, but the werewolves still have a hatred towards them. Also, the vampires seem to have an issue with the werewolves as well, because they view the werewolves as annoying animals. The two groups were constantly fighting with each other over where their boundaries were. If these perceptions were not created, the groups could have coexisted easily and protected the human race together. Their bad perceptions of each other caused conflicts that were not needed and easily avoided.
A perception I had one time was about this girl. When one of my friends introduced me to her in middle school, I thought she was a little weird. I didn't really give her a chance to get to know her, and I never really got to know her much in middle school. Now, in high school, I started hanging out with her more, and found out that she's a great person. We are really good friends now, and I'm happy that my perception of her did not make me miss out on having a really great friend.

In My Mind, although i am not a big religious person,
and i dont want to start a flaming war here about stuff, but i think the biggest event, in the history of man, that has caused the most conflict; was the man Jesus Christ. Now don;t get me wrong, i think there have been bigger things that have happened, but in my mind, everyone has known of Jesus Christ since they were like 2; and while they didn't consciously grasp it, they knew his name. They heard his story. Anyone who believes in a western religion, i believe has heard of Jesus Christ. wether your jewish, or catholic, or christian, or whatever the many branches of churches are; in one way or another, someone has told you his story.* With this being the biggest story ever, it has also been the story that has caused the most wars. because in every religious war, they take jesus on one side, for almost every religious war. The fact that i want to put out there, is that, truthfully, no one is right. ACCEPT IT. I think its really hard for a lot of people to believe that they are wrong, on something so defined as religion. but the truth is no one religion has all the answers, and not a single living soul knows the truth of him. so we should not start a war upon something that no one knows, and that no one will find the answers to, because beating the shit out of someone else, because you dont believe in their religion, isnt solving the problem. it just makes you look like a dumbass. So, if you ever get the chance to prove someone wrong on religion, just remember, your wrong as well.
*I think a great idea one day, is to keep a person away from religion, and see how they last till 30, then spring this religion idea on them. I think it would be interesting to someone's reaction to such an absurd thing

Mr. Kay,
I think that the show 24 is a great example of perception. It shows that people arent who you really think they are. People that are said to be bad people are actually good people. You only hear about all of the bad stuff that that person has done and none of the good. When they show the other side of the person, you start to really see both sides of that person. Then once you see both sides of the person, you can make a decision on their character. Too many times in the world today we assume things about people and groups of people. We need to really learn about that person and realize that a person isnt always the way they seem on the side you see right of the get.

The persecution of the African Americans during the civil right movement. The main perception of that time was that the whites were better than the African Americans. We also had them in slaved for hundreds of years which in most peoples minds would make us better than them. This conflict could have been different if we would have set aside our differences and not judge on race. Also if we would have given them all their rights as a U.S. citizens when they where freed from slavery.
On several times when I was little I thought of running away from home. Obviously I was still a young boy with little conmen sense. Then I saw the other side and saw the concrescences of leaving my home.
In "Running Fox" the perception was that all Indians were savages, but to the tribe the white man was not evil just the "whiskey man." The whiskey man was obviously a man who took advantage of the tribe by selling whiskey to them. The leader of the tribe Running Fox came up with an idea to get him back. In my understanding of reading the book the "whiskey man" was in the wrong. He should not have been taking advantage of them. He only used them to gain a profit, he would give them the whiskey for their fur and this was not a fair trade because the "whiskey man" could take it back into town and sell it for a great deal of money. But as you said in class its all how we look at it and who's point of view we see it from.

I also think a major event was the African Americans being enslaved. THe people who enslaved the african americans just didnt undersatnd them. They were different from us so they were scared. If the people would have gotaen to know them, they probably would have seen that they really arent that different from themselves. Something that was percieving in my life was, people always say that spinage is gross. Well i kind of like it. i didnt try it for a while because i alwyas heard it was gross. But i finally tried it and now i think it is prety good. it may not be the best food in the world but it still is prety good.

One of the biggest conflicts of perceptions would have to be the Holocaust. Hitler had changed the perceptions of the Germans to be against the Jews. Any child born after Hitler came into power got the perception from their parents that all Jews were imperfect and should be executed. If these perceptions of the Jews weren't created, the mass killing would never of happened and the Jewish community could live in peace. I used to perceive school as a place to keep children from doing anything fun and that it was pointless. Obviously this was from my own opinion and from the opinion of my friends and not my parents. Now I realize that school is meant to be a guide line to aid you to be successful after High school. I have come to realize that perceptions can have a powerful influence on not just your life but also the lives around you.

ummmmm i really dont know mr kay.
A perseption i know would be attacks on 9/11 seem to have many different perceptions. most americans had a fear of middle eastern people. We think the ways they live their life go against our morals and they think that our ways are bad too. This could have never lead to war if we all got along. i now know that I realize most of them are friendly people and share close interests
A movie that would go along with this would be Step brothers. I think this because in the beginning dale and brennen faught everyday. The thought eachothers were losers. The fought over stupid things cause they thought they were better than eachother. But in the end they come to a conclusion that they are kinda alike. And then end up getting really close. This is an example because it shows how they view eachother before they already knew eachother, even though they didnt know eachother at all.
Something that has happened to me like this would be, i kinda seem to judge someone before i know who they really are. When i hear something bad about someone i just asume that they are mean or whatever. Or a nother example would be mii eating habits. if i dont like the way soemthing looks even if it smells good. I wont eat it. You always have to try things out in order to know the truth.
Like it or not, perceptions happen everyday, and we all do it. Sometimes, we have no control over the way we think about others. In the movie Forgetting Sarah Marshall perceptions occur frequently between the main characters. Peter and Sarah, who are the main characters, break up and when peter goes to hawaii to escape life sarah is also there. Peter meets Aldous snow, who is sarahs new boyfriend and has many perceptions about him. He thinks that he is a complete tool, ignorant fool, and that he does not deserve sarah. After talking to Aldous a couple of times he realizes hes wrong, and quote peters words, "Fuck your cool".
Personally, as a teenager i percieve people and things all the time. I remeber coming into high school everyone always told me it was going to be so hard. I had no idea what to think because i didnt know if it was true. After the first card marking, when i finnaly started to get comfortable, I realized i was way wrong. Yes, school is hard without good effort, but if you do your work and pay attention you will be fine.

P.s sorry im late the doctor gave me some medicine and it put me to sleep last night
i think that the movie cocaine cowboys is a good example. in this movie/documentary it is about the people that used to bring in all the coke to the united states. the police only looked at what they were doing but looking at what the money was going towards. if it were not for them the great place of Miami would be just a little town of nothing. 90% of the coke money that was profit went in to build Miami. the police thought that they were hurting the country but really they were helping in a way but doing it in the wrong way.
Mr.kay,
One example of perceptions is something we recently talked about in history and your class. It was the communist thing ( sorry forgot what it was called.) But, People were afraid of them and wouldnt allow them in their contry just becasue they believed that things sould be done a certain way. I think this is a perception becasue people didnt think twice or get to know the people that were communist they just judged them right away. In my life I have precevied many things. But one is the time that I thought that how some people dressed was who they were. I found this to not be true, Just because someone wears chains and listen to screamo all the time dosnt make them a bad person. They could actually be really sweet and caring.

The movie I chose is Napoleon Dynamite. Pedro ran for president and so did other contestants. They where very competitive about the whole thing and it ended up causing Napoleon to dance on stage. Although Napoleon was a good dancer, it was still not something he would normally do. If they would have just ran for president without getting so into it then Napoleon would not have had to dance and then maybe Pedro would have for respect from him. In the beginning of the year I "judged a book by its cover" for a lot of people. I on the spot descided I wouldn't like them depending on their looks. I was so used to the people who dressed like that bashing on the way I looked that I thought the certain people would all be the same. For that I am sorry, I have later on found out that the people I thought where no good, and that I would hate, ended up being extremely cool. Well, most of them. I don't really judge people anymore.

Awhile ago I watched the movie American History X. In this movie the whole city was racial and created issues because of thier perceptions. Different groups meant different things and you had to be in a group somewhere. The whole movie has differnt examples of how wrong perceptions can effect things, but im choosing the character Danny's issue. The high school had different groupls as well as the city. Danny was considered a tough skinhead. This caused the black kids to get perceptions that made no since. It resulted in him getting shot and killed in the school bathroom. KNowing this could really happen pisses me off. The kid didnt even know him. He just thought what he thought and decided to take action.

I choose the book Resident Evil: Nemesis. In this book there are 3 main characters: Jill, Carlos, and Nicholai. By the beginning of the book, Nicholai and Carlos work together. After a little while they get separated and are forced to go separate ways. Now, Carlos believes Nicholai to be good in the sense that he wouldn't betray him in any way. Later on though he finds that Nicholai is quite the opposite. So, because Carlos perceived Nicholai as an upstanding person, it deceived him for Nicholai betrayed him and tried to kill him. And so, if Carlos was at least a little bit more less trusting he wouldn't have had to go through that close encounter. Now, a time when I perceived something one way to find out that it was another was when I tried out for track last year. When I went to practice for the first time I thought it would be fun, I was sadly mistaken. It was the entire opposite of what I thought it would be.
