Day 19
Hope the vocab and Act 2 quiz went well. Today we will look at an article. Pick one but it cannot be sports or entertainment. It must be a news story. Make sure that you have a topic sentence and concluding sentence that make the blog flow. If you do not have either of these or you do not cite your source, you will not get credit for the blog.

Well here is a interesting story. Economist and environmentalist have came to the decision that a tax on oil and coal to reduce green house gasses. It's a idea to "warm" *COUGH-COUGH FORCE* people of the idea of alternative fuels. Otherwise most/all fuels will be cheap and overlook alternatives. This idea is not the best of ones because Gov't funded Programs take a loooooong time to go into effect. and if the Tax is just to notice and influence the idea, as the bill will be processed the economy will take a beating when it's still trying to wobble on it's way to stand.
Why did it take so loooong for this post to appear if MR. Kay posted it at 4:00?

The Economic stimulus plan was talked about again last night. A few of the senators are not so excited about the plan. Tom Harkin, democrat, said the plan was trickledown economics, which wont work. Harkin said obama was noncommital about whether he would adjust the plan. Earlier thursday the obama commitee sat down to talk about finances and the economy, which is what will make him the best president in history or the worst. The tax cuts could be about $20 per paycheck and $500 to $1000 per year. Ron Wyden says that he doubts the stimulus plan will do much for economy. We will just have to see what happens when obama takes office on January 20th.

Fighting continues over Gaza between Israel and Hamas. This has been going on since December 27, 2008. Many people have been killed including 169 children and teens. Hamas has used children as human shields. This is a terrible act of violence and it deeply saddens me to hear such horrible things. Hamas has been bombing Israel for years, and now Israel must fight against this terror. All of this has been happening during a cease fire. It is my hope that the fighting between Israel and Hamas stops soon. Hamas needs to abide by the cease fire and stop this act of terror against Israel.
My source was the Oakland Press dated January 9, 2009.
My topic is on Israel and the conflict throughout Hamas (and surounding alies). Hamas had shot countless rockets into Israel over the past two weeks. Israel in return sent there troops to destroy any known threats. The fight continues after a cease fire ordered by the U.N., Hamas was to blaim. I totaly agree with isreal because they are the victim. I believe that if Gaza and the West Bank want to be treated as official states, then they have to behave like them. Any smart leader of a country should realize that if you start launching rockets into a neighboring territory, then you are going to face consequences. I hate the people that are nagging on how Israel over reacted. They may have but would you alow this non-sense to happen. Acording to Gaza food and supplies to survive are low? Bullshit! they obviously have enough mortars and rockets to spare. I hope Hamas realizes they cant blame Israel for killing civilians when they use schools for weapon storage. Anyways civilians die in every war, It happens. Overall The fights need to stop. Sooner or later another world war will emerge if it goes out of proportion.

I found an article on a guitar player becoming a hero on an airplane. His name is Chris Llewellyn and he's in the band that plays for Asher Roth. So this guy Chris was on an airplane heading for LA when a guy on the plane tackled a stewardess and tried to open the exit door of the plane. He claimed to have a bomb so Chris tackled him and held him there until the plane could safely land. There was a couple people that helped him and they are all being recognized for their heroism by the authorities. The guy that made the threat was arrested and taken away. The plane was searched and they found that there was no bomb. Its a good thing we have brave, responsible people in the world to keep us safe.

With the economy in horible condition, of course people in American are going to be losing their jobs. Unfortuantly, the jobless rate is at a 16 year high, 7.2%. This is according to the New York Times, "Jobless Rate Hits 7.2%, a 16-Year High" by Louis Uchitelle. That may not seem like a high percent, but in reality, it means that 2.6 million Americans don't have a job. Something must be done about this. Hopefully the newly elected president, Obama will make many changes for the better. Since the getting a job is at an altime low, basically the only way to go is up. It seems that the Wall Street Bailout hasn't made any difference so far. Since we have higher taxes due to this bailout, it seems like it has done more damage than good. At least, for the middle-class Americans. Somehow, the government needs to find a way to create new jobs.

Is an act that protects the minority voting rights still constitutional. My aricle is called "U.S. Supreme Court agrees to hear voting rights case" it is about the Voting Rights Act and if it is still needed today. The act was passed to proctect voters 44 years ago from the Jim Crow laws and the act is now being called unconstitutional. It is being called unconstitutional beacasue of Barack Obama being the first African-American president. Section 5 of the act makes some areas that had problems with voting discrimation in the past to get aproval from washigton to make any changes to voting methods and steps. Some say that the act is still needed others think it is uneeded to the point it it is unconstitutional. The hearing is called Northwest Austin Municipal Utility District No. 1 v. Mukasey (08-322) and is soon to be at the highest level of the courts the supreme courts.

On friday Israel troops and jets, attacked Hamas targets in Gaza. Palestinian fired 30 rockets into southern Israel. The prime minster says they will continue this operation to defend the citizens of Israel. The rockets proved that the Council was not practical and would not be honored by the other side. Egypt continues to try to get a cease-fire agreement. This argument is with the Palestinian president. On saturday the
Palestinian president has a meeting with the president of egypt.

The article that I chose was National jobless rate jumps to 7.2percent in December. The nation’s unemployment rate bolted to 7.2 percent in December, the highest level in 16 years. For all of 2008, the economy lost a net total of 2.6 million jobs. That was the most since 1945. Although the number of jobs in the U.S. has more than tripled since then, losses are still being painfully felt. The unemployment rate, meanwhile, rose from 6.8 percent in November, to 7.2 percent last month, the highest since January 1993. Even with a new government stimulus and the Federal Reserve’s decision to ratchet down a key interest rate to an all-time low. The unemployment rate is expected to keep rising.

People now a days there is alot if violence and people are commiting more crims. At least five people were shot Friday as spectators left a basketball game at a high school. People were panicing and screaming. Every one was in a big rush to get out. People are just shooting people for no reason. Now many people are dying and it is just beacause some person has a rage. There was no reason why the person did it they just did. If people keep on acting like this than the crim rate will rise.

In the Detroit Free Press Jan. 8, 2009 in the Local News there was a small peace on the murder and rape of Jesika Kelsey on the 1st of this year. All the neighbors could not see any thing a miss with Steven Kelaey the murderer. Of course everyone is surprised. I personally could not this had happened in Highland a small township and this is the first murder in Highland that I can remember. This came as a shock to everyone and how people go that low.
Mr. Kay I think that most people did not see the blog past 7 that gave up.
A current event that I picked out is oxford government meet to settle litigation. Oxford township and Village have been at odds for years with each other. Then on Wednesday they came together in a meeting and try to work out their differences. Also it was not a very good meeting for the most part. Despite their differences the five village council members and the township's seven members came together sat around a table with the intent to solve their problem and save the taxpayers from footing more attorney's bills. They are saying that they are trying to avoid paying the arbitrator hundreds of dollars an hour. Hopefully, they will work out their differences without costing the taxpayers money.

Mr. Kay,
Today, we found out that the U.S. of A's jobless rate went up to 7.2 percent. This is said to be the highest it has been since 1993. Now the old 4.6 percent in 2007 looks like nothing. Economists suggested it was supposed to cap off at 7 percent at an early prediction. This, is obvious that this isn't very good. This just shows how many people out there are trying to make a life for themselves and are most likely being held back by the horrible economy. The recession causing this is said to be one of the longest recessions in a 25 years, and said to still go on for the most of this year. Obama says that he will be making tax cuts and shortening government spending to reach a $850 billion package to help revive the economy. Economist still suggest that by the end of the year, this still should rise to 10% unemployment. I think that what Obama is doing is very necessary to help bring people back to the workforce. This is the big unemployment problem in America right now.

this article is all about the fighting between the Palestine and Isreal. the Palestinians just want to kill everyone in Isreal after they had signed a temporary treaty. they broke the treaty by shooting missels into Isreal. Isreal told them to stop but it kept happening. so Isreal had to retailiate and not just get pushed around. So Isreal started bombing the Palestinians. now the Palestinians are mad and trying to blame it on Isreal. they are the ones who started it in the first place. they just need to figure out what to do.
I read about how VP elect Biden showed up in Afghanistan. He met with the Afghanistan leader Asif Ali Zardari. Biden said how we are going to continue assisting Afghanistan according to a statement from Pakistan's Ministry of Foreign Affairs. He also said how President elect Obama said that he wants to get the military out of Iraq and help Afghanistan bulid a solid governement. This article makes me think about how different our future is going to be different with such a different president. And then I also wonder how is he going to get troops out of Iraq. I think that they should get out, cause they have been in there so long but I also think that its going to be a difficult job just pulling them out of there.

Its a story about mexico and how the mexico drug violence spill into U.S. They are securing the southwest border so no drugs get into the u.s.In the last year more than 5,000 people have been killed and police and military officials have become common targets for violent drug cartels who are fighting with each other. u.s have has an intense year watching and waiting for the spillover from the drug war.there arent any specific operational happening right now so they cant go into anything until they have real proof that drugs are happening through the border. They are still waiting for something to happen so the can catch the violence over the drugs. the dhs plan is still waiting to happen if anything should come up.\
If anything happens with the spill over of violence into u.s you can count of the police to respond on that right away and take care of it.

I was watching the news and caught a glimpse of a story about a policeman. All I saw was that he was feeding inmates insufficient meals to make money. So I went on CNN and read a little bit more. The policeman's name was Greg Barlett and was sentenced to prison for doing this. He ended up pocketing at least $200,000 doing this. I read that the state provides sheriffs $1.75 per day per inmate for food. It also said that the sheriff's can keep whatever is leftover. So this guy was giving inmates less food, so that he would have more money to keep for himself. In 2008, Barlett made $95,000 by doing this and a total of $200,000. I think this is ridiculous that someone would do this, let alone a sheriff. I guess this is what the world has come to.

I read this story in the Oakland press. I was very disturbed while i was reading it. It was the front page article about how this young man raped and murdered his sister. He just got back from army basic. I believe its possible that he really could of gotten messed up from the army. Like he just couldnt take it anymore. Either way, it was a sad story. He was 19, and his sister was younger. Its scary to think about the things our society does. Also the fact that this kind of thing took place really close to us all. To conclude, this was a tragic story, that wont be forgotten.

Many people, unfortunately, are losing thier jobs in todays economy. However, (for once) Persident-elect Barack Obama did something good. He is calling for a launch of a website where peole can answer to employers searching for workers. Who knows how many jobs there are actually out there, but it unravels a good thought. In an artcle titled, "Powell endorses Obama service initiative," it shows how Obama is getting support for his plan from various people including former Sec of State Colin Powell. Powell said that the website, www.USAservice.org, will follow the same general layout as websites like craigslist. The website will official launch on Martin Luther King day, which is January 20th, but we'll have to see how it does. This is actually a good plan, I think, that elect Obama has drawn out.

Do you all know the man "Joe the plumber" that Obama and McCain met on their campaign trail? Well, this mans name is Samuel J. Wurzelbacher and he lives in Ohio. "Joe" became famous with his 15 minutes of fame when he asked Obama about his tax plan. Although he was more for McCain his fame came about from both of the candidates. "Joe the plumber" now says that he is heading to Isreal as a news reporter. He will be covering the war that is present in Isreal. He will be spending 10 days there. He is being sent their by conservative web site pjtv.com. Sam says that he wants to let Israel's "'Average Joes' share their story." If I was in his position I would be very excited.

Obama is creating a plan to open up 3.5 million new jobs in america over the next 2 years. He is doing this by cutting taxes down by $775 billion. I think this is a great idea because it will really get our economy going. Yeah the government isnt getting as much tax money but its all together helping america and its citizens. Although he is black and poeple are doubting him, i think Obama will bring this country out of the dirt. Congress has to pass this idea, and they only have 15 days to reject it, which hopefully they wont. If congress declines this offer there is something seriously wrong with our government and they dont know what they are doing.

The news topic i chose to write about was a tragic shooting that took place at a schools basketball game. The game was in overtime when a some people decided to leave. As they were leaving a car with gunman came to the door and started firing. there was a lot of chaos as someone shouted "there firing." there was said to be many people running about and yelling. at the end of the hysteria three people were in serious condition, while two were in critical condition. This was said to be a gang related attack. I think this is an important topic to focus on. There are many gangs in the more urban areas and i think its time to take more notice to the violence.

People are not always what they seem this day in age. In a recent event a North Alabama Sheriff was jailed for pocketing money used to feed inmates. People saying that this man served inmates "Woefully insufficent meanls to pocket more than 200 thousand dollars. It is legal for The Sheriffs to keep whatever money is left over from feeding the inmates. However feeding the inmates smaller portions or terrible food is simply cruel. Salmonella has caused many issues for health in the past years. Today and for the past week another outbreak has occured. So far, in Oakland County, only 3 people have been effected by this. However 20 other people in the state have been effected by the virus. Many people across the entire country have been diagnosed with salmonella. The health experts blame most of this outbreak on cross-contamination. Everybody also has been saying that undercooking their meat has caused the issue too. Only 2 people have died from this disease this time and it was because of the combination between their age and virus. Long story short, cook your meat longer and don't take shortcuts. Otherwise will probably end up with the disease.

Mr. Kay,
In the world today you are never safe. Even the people that you love can turn their back on you in an instant. Recently a girl from Milford High School was killed by her brother. She was lying in bed when her brother came in stabbed her, raped her, then tried to kill her by stabbing a knife thru her eye and into her brain. Her brother was back from the Army for a while and went out to drink and killed his sister when he gets home. It just shows you that you never know when or who to trust. People can turn bad jus like that and you wont be ready for it.

I find it difficult to understand why a successful actor needs to rob a home. Former sopranos actor, Lillo Brancato Jr, attempted to break in a new york home where he shot and killed an off duty police man. He addmitted to drinking prior to the robbery, and was on drugs. He has acted with Robert De Niro in a film as well. Many actors and such almost cant handle the lime light without it destroying them. Lillo was sentenced to 10 years in prison because of such an idiotic action.People who are famous take things too far, and in the end screws them over. I find it insane to get paid for what you love and mess it up with careless mistakes.

My article is that Obama could save 3.5 million jobs. In this article it talks about how Obama on Saturday said that his advisers estmiates his tax cuts and new spending that he can create 3.5 mill jobs in the next two years. "These numbers are a stark reminder that we can not continue on our current path." Obama told us this after the unemployment rate went to 7.2. The highest in 16 years. Many people have written about this but I feel that it is something I want to write about because it involves a former Lakeland student. A senior in 2007 at Lakeland High School raped and killed his sister earlier this month. His sister was a senior at Milford High School and he was 19. I read a follow up story on it in the Oakland Press and it said teachers had noticed weird behavior from the student. He had drawn disturbing pictures on the back of his tests and was very withdrawn from the other students. One teacher told the parents but they did not act upon the teachers information. I wonder if this could have been prevented because of the warning signs. I also find it kind of abnormal that the brother and sister were sharing the room, considering their age and that they were of different genders. I think that it is a horrible tragedy that someone would murder another, especially when they are apart of their family.
Although many people may have heard about this story by now, I found the article online about it. In highland township, a man named Steven Kelsey admitted to stabbing his sister, Jesika Kelsey, and having sex with her while she was dying. The event took place on New Year's Eve. Steven was on holiday leave from basic training as a U.S. Army recruit at Fort Jackson in Columbia, S.C. He told investigators that he stabbed her once in the neck and tried to stab her in the brain. Apparently the two used to be good friends. Nobody thought that there were any problems between the siblings or at home. This is why the event was so unexpected and tragic. He is charged with first degree murder and rape.
I find this article disturbing, because, first, it shows how you may think you can trust someone but always have to look out for yourself. Also, the second I saw Steven's picture, I remember him. We used to call him Steve. He stood at my bus stop before he dropped out of high school. He always just read books and kept to himself, so we thought he was just a pretty normal, shy kid. It just shows how you never really know what someone can be capable of.

What ended up happening was one of the friends pulled out an AK assault rifle and shot 15 rounds into a house. A young mother was shot in the neck. She is alright now. But upchurch was in the car and now he is facing charges for attempted murder. This is one of the saddest things I've ever heard. My brother and DeAndre were friends. He was one of the nicest kids I've ever met. He was also a great basketball player he was probably going to college for free. Now he may have ruined his life for being somewhere he shouldn't have been. This really affected my family because we all knew him. Well i found a pretty interesting story about health. This is from CNN.com and acoording to it the CDC is investing salmonella outbreaks in 42 states. The type of salmonella is Typhimuriom. I find it interesting that 42 states have had this happen because and it was in the time of the holidays. So that leads me to think it might be because people are eating different foods during this time or something else. Now the CDC hasn't said what food or foods have been the cause of this but my guess is they probably weren't washed good enough. Another thing is California has the highest number of cases so far. Since they haven't found the type of food the Food and Drug Administation haven't been able to do much with this problem. That story really caught my eye expecially because Michigan was in the top 5.

They said the reason they were bombing the gaza strip was because a group of hamas leaders were sending rockets into israel. If the leader was killed, will the rockets quit being fired. Mr. Kay,
The character taht I have chosen to describe is Abigail. I think that Abigail was pushing her luck in he beginning of the play. For example, when she was trying to pull Jonh Proctor back into telling him that he loves her, that was a very risky move. And then, when we were reading today, she pulled that stupid crap against Mary Warren. She is so self centered that she wants John's wife(Elizabeth) to be hung because John doesn't love her. She is always trying to hurt someone. Then when something doesn't go her way, she just turns into the devil herself. I think that Abigail impacted Mary Warren. Abigail drove her crazy, enough to the point where Mary Warren could not handle the stress that Abigail was putting on her shoulders. Mary Warren finally snapped; she screamed until she was driven insane.
( Mr. Kay, this blog is not late. You told me that I could re-type it because my computer wouldn't except the code at the bottom of this screen.)
