Day 15

So hopefully you have enjoyed the readings of Edgar Allen Poe. We will read a few more dark transcendentalists over the next few days. Tomorrow we will try again to discuss the ideals of the values Chris McCandless had in his life. Maybe this time, you will all be ready to discuss.

For this evening, pick one value you think exemplified Chris (either good or bad) and give 3 examples of how that value is shown in the book. Then comment on how that value fits into your perception of him.

I think the value of family exemplifies Chris in a bad way. An example of this would be one of the reasons why he ran away, which is because of his family and how much he disliked them. Another example of this value is how Chris goes on the road when he feels an attachment, kind of like family, to someone or people. Even Ronald Franz said that Chris was like a son to him. A third example of family that Chris showed poorly was that Chris never stayed in touch with his family. When Chris left for his first road trip, his mother told him to write her a lot and yet he never did. Family fits into my perception of Chris because it shows me how selfish Chris is. His own mother wished for him to just write her a letter but yet he never did. This lifestyle is so different than mine because I am very family oriented. Also, this shows me that Chris is stubborn because he won't listen to people around him. All along the trip, the people he visited with told him to write to his family but he never did. Overall, Chris didn't show the value of family well.

I believe that the value of self-pride shows off Chris in a positive way. An example to prove this is how Chris leaves his home for his own personal reasons. I admire the fact that Chris isn't afraid to do what he wants. Another example of this is when he doesn't keep close contact with the people he meets along his way. This shows that his self pride is a good value because he knows better then to get close with a person and then just leave them behind. He stays true to himself and his morals and never gets close to one person. Yet another example of this is when Chris keeps a journal of the things that he does. It is in his best interest to write and express what he did that day, and it ended up being a good thing because it was used to help write this whole book. So as you can see, Chris staying true to himself and his self-pride ended up being a good thing. This helps shape the way I view him as a person. Just a man who wants to learn life lessons in his own way, and in his own way only.

I think being alone is a value that exemplifies Chris in a negitive and positive way. In the book Chris's dad, Walt, said that Chris has always been the kinda of person to do stuff on his own and not be dependent on anyone else. Another example is when Chris wouldn't stay at anyone's house too long. I don't think it was only because he didn't want to be too attached to them. I think he also didn't want to feel too dependent on them and wanted to be able to feed himself and stuff by himself. My final example is when Chris went to Alaska. If Chris was a person who didn't like to be alone, he wouldn't of went on a trip by himself to Alaska. This all fits into my perception of Chris because to me, Chris is a person who doesn't really care about others and him being alone shows him not wanting to show commpassion for others. Overall Chris is a lonely person who should've tried harder to make a friendlier impact on me.

i think that one vaule chris shows real well is non conformity. he shows it when he crahed his car and he burn all but a couple of dollars. also he show it when he desides to go to alaska. when he went to alsaka he ingored what every told him he had to little of equipment. the last reason would when he leaves everyone. when he dose this he is showing that he dosent want to be close to people like most people. that is how i think non conformity is shown in a positive and begitive way.

Independence is a big value of Chris. This value is both a good one and a bad one. One example is that he would always leave people when they started getting connected to them. This can be a good thing because they shouldn't get connected if their not going to see him again. Another example is that he left into the wild alone. This is good because now he only had to get food for himself. The third reason is that he didn't talk to his family much. He also didn't tell them he was leaveing forever. This is good so that they didn't stop him from leaveing and didn't try to help when he didn't want it. This fits into him because now I think of him as more of a strong and self reliant person that can live on his own.

I believe that independence is the value that best exemplifies Chris McCandless. It is first shown when Chris first headed out on his own. He was very excited when he did that. The second is when he didn't contact his family. It is sad that he contacted a few people he met on the road but not his parents. The last thing that is shown is that he would always leave people when they started getting connected to them. Chris really didn't want to keep many relationships.

Chris has many values but one value really characterizes him. the value i am thinking of is moral value. he holds this moral value throughout this whole book he never made me believe once that this was not one of his values. the first example is when Chris worked at McDonald's the manager knew he was a hard worker. the second example is when he worked at the farm it said how he always finished his work well no matter how long it took. the third example is how Chris sticks with his idea of transcendentalism he never quit half way through he stuck with it. this is what think chis' main value was and how he expressed it.

Pride was in my opinion, one of the most important values of Chris. Throughout the book he showed that his morals come before anything else. An example of this is when Chris was working at the elevator grain. Westerberg told us that Chris worked harder than anyone he's ever seen. Another example is when Gallien tried to offer Chris money but he wouldn't take it. I believe this is because Chris felt that by taking money from anyone was not completing his journey by him self. A third example is when Chris was working at McDonald's and he had to wear the socks. he didn't want to but to him it was about following the rules and working hard. To him, it was important because he felt he needed to live up to his expectations. It was what made him happy.

I think the value of independece exemplifies Chris in a bad way. An example of this would be going off on the road all by himself. He feels he doesnt need anyone with him. Another way is when it said he was a little boy how he use to sell his own vegetables. He tried earning his own money instead of relying on his parents. Finally, when he was on the road many of people offered to give him money but he didnt take it. The only money he would take was the money he earned. Independence fits into my perception of Chris because he shows that he should have someone to rely on in some situations. Chris really doesnt expect help from anyone. He is kind of a stubborn and he should have realized he cant always rely on himself. Its okay to be independent but not all the time.

I believe that the value of maturity has exemplified Chris. This can be both a good (being mature) or a bad (being immature) effect. One example of being mature would be stepping up and applying for the job at McDonald's. This took some guts to give his real name because his parents could have easily tracked him down. An example of immaturity would also be involved with money, this time it was the burning of it. When he burned the money at the national park it was being immature. If he was more mature, he would have kept the money to use later on. The last example is that Chris was being immature by not letting other people help him out when he needed it. My perception of Chris from this value is that he was a little stubborn teenager who thinks he could do it all with no help at all.

I think one value that really exemplifies Chris McCandless is independance. This is both negative and positive. This can be negative because Chris's mind is always so greatly focused on independance, or proving that he can be independant that he is willing to hurt people very close to him. Not only does Chris hurt his family, but whenever he meets somebody and becomes tight with them, he just packs up and leaves them. Like theres nothing to it. Somtimes i wonder if he every thinks about what the other people think when he leaves and how upset they might be. This value of independance is also very positive. It shows that he does not need anyone else to live his life. He is very particular about going out on his own and seeing what he can do for himself. I think that he proved to himself that he is independant and does not need other people to show him or tell him what to do. This value says a lot about Chris and his character to me. It shows that he is living for his own satisificatoin and for himself. He is doing what he wants and is showing everyone he is doing it, and that he can do it.

Non comformitry is a value shown by chris. Its a bad value. One example of a bad one is that he goes to Alaska unprepard. Another bad example is it gets him in trouble. He get arrested from riding the rails. Chris taking non comformity to far evantrolly cost him his life. Non comfomity fits Chris because he could do what he wanted.

A value that definitely exemplifies Chris is determination. He shows this a lot through the book. This can be eather good or bad. A way it can be good is if your determined to do something good, like get all a's. Like when Chris was very determined to do good in cross country. He would train very hard and always do his best. Or how he was determined do finish his jobs when he was working with Westerberg. But it can also be bad. like if your determed to do something that can lead to your death. like him wantin to go to Alaska. This isint bad, but abandoning his family to achieve this was bad. Determination seems to be one of his most easy to see attributes, you could definitly tell Hes determined to do something buy talking to him about it, like when people try to talk him out of something, he wont listen.

Chris's biggest value to me was independance. This exemplifies chris in a good and bad way. He could do thing for himself which is always good. But he left his family and ended up dying. one example from the book is just going on the trip. Another could be him leaving his family for years. Another maybe could be him finding his own way to get places. This fints my preception of him because i thought he was a strong kid that didn't rely on others to do things for him.
