Day 3

Hope you were able to begin and understand the movie. Even in the beginning, it is evident that there is a friction between the ideals of an individualist (Robin Williams character) and the "societal" beliefs of the establishment.

Please respond to the following quote:

Archibald Macleish:

The dissenter (look up this word if you do not know what it means) is every human being at those moments of his life when he resigns momentarily from the herd and thinks for himself.

I think that this quote is true. The dissenter is some one who does not believe. When someone doesn't believe then he is unlike the herd. As he disbelieves he there fore is thinking for himself. One example is wroking on homework at school. When everyones talking and your not your being the dissenter. You disbelieve that you should talk so you can get your work done. The dissenter doesn't always disbelieve in the wrong thing but most of the time he does.

A dissenter is a person who believes in his beliefs and nothing else. When a dissenter would come over from Europe and runs into someone who doesn't believe like he does, he would be apart from the herd (everybody else in America). One example of this would be sports. In practice, everybody could be just messing around. You could practice more to get better at something. You would be the dissenter because you are standing out from the crowd. I think everyone is a dissenter once in a while.

i think that this quote is true 100%. when someone dosent like to to follow the herd it make the statement of non conformity. those who spereate themself from the herd every once in a while dose think for them selfs. like in the movie the teacher is trying to teach them that. buit the kids arnt used to be treated like adults that it seems a little od to them at times. like when the teacher told them to rip out the entir intro to there text book that they have. that is what i thinkk this quote means.

I think that the quote is absolutely true. The dissenter could be anyone. The definition of dissenter is a person who dissents, as from an established church, political party, or majority opinion. For example, when your supposed to be talking to your friends and you're reading a book, you're being a dissenter. You know you should be talking but you choose to read a book. The dissenter isn't trying to believe in the wrong thing but he/she does sometimes. I also agree with everyone else.

I think anyone could be a dissenter. A dissenter is someone who has different opinions. Maybe you dont consider yourself one but you could be at a certain point. You might not know it but you could be on earound your friends or anybody. For example, you might be with your friends and they want to do something and you dont want to. You are thinking about yourself then and not what your friends think. Yes I believe in this qoute.

"A nonconformists" is the basic definition of the word dissenter. In this quote by Archibald Macleish, the word is more better defined. Summed up, it says that someone who steps out of the line they are told to follow to express beliefs about a matter they feel is important though others might not, is a dissenter. In my own opinion, this quote is just a repetition of everything we've been learning lately. It is not something that could give us a new look on the subject, it just gives us a new vocabulary word to describe it. It relates to the movie though because when looking up the definition I also found that it involved being established to a church which is almost what the movie is about. Instead of going to a public school, the kids are going to a religious high educated school thats extremely strict. This quote, to me, really means nothing but to others I guess it's helping them to learn about another meaning of being a nonconformist.

This quote is another way of saying what we talk about in class. A dissenter is someone who "...differ[s] in opinion". So in the quote when it says to think for himself, this would be an example of a dissenter who stops and asks himself, "Am I doing the right thing?". This relates to the movie we are watching because I think that the really shy guy (the new kid) is starting to be a dissenter himself. In the begining of the movie, the new kid wouldn't really talk much and kept to himself. But then, he broke out of his shell in class and noticed that he can be a great poet. I think at one point he stopped and asked himself, "Is this really what I want to do, be alone and not have any friends or do I want to live my life, carpe diem?". Being a dissenter has a close meaning with being a nonconformist.

Had to look the word up, to me anyone could be a dissenter. I kind of look at it as a nonconformist a little. A dissenter does what he or she wishes and not what everyone else does. Like in the movie, the teach tells them not to do the dead poets society and they do it anyways. Perfect example of a noncomformist or dissenter. Also it would be like immigrating somewhere and you keep your beliefs, people might think your weird or odd but you do what you want to do and you get heard for doing so. You don't just sit back and change your life completely just because you moved to a new country.

to be a dissenter is to not believe in something, or to disagree. So if someone is stepping back from the herd to think for think for themselves they are being a dissenter. If so they probably regect something baleeved buy most, and are figure out what they baleev themselves, not the herd. The herd is refering to people that just fallow the leader or the crowd, and don't think for themselvs. So to step back from this herd, and thinking for yourself is dissagreing with what other are doing. All together, what it pritymuch is saying is when you realize that your ding things that you dont realy want to do, so you deside to not fallow the crowd, and do what you want. There for thinking for yourself, and being a dissenter. (im not sher if im using the word right, dissenter, i just looked up the definition)

I think this quote is true. If the dissenter doesn't believe in anything else but his own beliefs, he is thinking for himself. It's good to be an individual. And it's good to have your own opinions. If for one moment you can say how you really feel, or you can show what you believe in, it's a great thing. I read some of the other blogs and most people said a dissenter does the opposite of what they are supposed to do. I don't think that's how it goes all the time. This is the definition I found. Dessenter- A person who differs in opinion or feeling; disagree. The first thing I thought of when I read that was dealing with peer pressure. If all your peers are pressuring you to do something, and you're telling yourself that it's wrong and against what you believe in, wouldn't that make you a dissenter? To me standing out and being your own person makes you a dissenter. You don't have to do bad things and you don't have to go against something.

This quote seems deep and meaningful. To be the dissenter is to believe what others may not. The non conformist also may be the dissenter. When a person decides to set themselves apart from the crowd, they are truly unique. This quote means the herd is the people, and the dissenter is that special person that is brave enough to be themselves and think what they want to think. The non conformist thinks for themselves, and is not affected by others choice. When everyone does the same thing, this person is not the follower. This person is the leader. People should live by this quote.

A dissenter is someone who doesn't belive in in what others do or dissagrees with certain belifs. Knowing this you can infer that the quote is saying that everyone at one time or another in their life is a dissenter. This is true for most everyone. You are not always going to be a perfect person who agrees with what everyone is thinking all the time. You are going to have your moments where you dissagree with something and that's okay. Being a dissenter could also be those moments where you think for yourself once in awile. As it says in the quote. Everyone should understand this quote and use it to their advantage because if you havn't thought of yourself sometime by now, you really should. You can't always live by what other people's standards are. That is what i belive this quote is trying to tell us.

This quote is a true statement. People can have moments when they do not believe. When people do not believe they resign from the herd. This quote can play a big roll in a lot of peoples lives. Another word for a dissenter would be a non conformist they think for themselves and dont follow the others. If this person is a non conformist then they are really their own leader. I think if we were all dissenters we could all be our own leaders.

I think that what it is saying in this quote happens to everyone every once in a while. What I am getting out of it, is that every once in a while, someone steps out of their confort zone and stands up for what they believe in. Many times when this haapens it is spur of the moment, you don't even think about it you just do it. You don't have time to think about what other people are thinking about you. You also don't care, you just do it. For the most part this is a good thing, because you are doing what you think is right.

A dissenter is someone who goes off the beaten path and does what he believes in. In the movie this is demostrated when they go in the court yard and all walk a different way. This is strong beliefs of non conformity. In the quote he is saying sometimes you have to seperate fom others and do what you beieve in. This is very important in society because people need to discover new things for themselves. This quote means dont let others think for you. This is a strong quote about non conformity.
