Please ponder the following quote:

"Justice consists not in being neutral between right and wrong, but in finding out the right and upholding it, wherever found, against the wrong"
Theodore Roosevelt

How does this quote connect to you and then how does it connect to Of Mice and Men?

Mr. Kay,
I would have to say this is one of the most strangely worded quotes we have ever discussed. I think I might be able to decipher it though.

When I read this quote, I cannot help but think about judges and the court system. It makes me think of how judges really need to know not only what is right and wrong, but why. You could get anybody to be a judge if they didn't know why something is right or wrong. You just need to tell them that somebody did something wrong. But in actuality, in courts, people need to understand why something is wrong. If a judge didn't know why something is wrong, they could give you a ridiculous or undermined sentence. They really need to know what is up. I also think about how they really need to stick up for what is right. This goes back to what is right and wrong and the decision because judges really need to know how to stick up for what is right. This quote could relate to me because, though I am not a judge, I really need to think about my actions and stand up for them. I know I can't just go along with people trying to do bad things. I need to stand up for myself and realize what is right for me and why. With Of Mice and Men, the first thing I think of is Lennie's death. Was George right to withhold what he felt is right (which was to kill Lennie)? I think he was. George really knew what had to be done and how it was the right thing to do, but above all, he knew why. Overall though, this quote is really thought-provoking, as hard to understand as it may be.

How this quote connects to of Mice and Men is by how Lennie was mentally disabled and every one felt bad for him. But he killed somebody so it doesn't make it right. Also, another example would be is when Curley started a fight with Lennie because he probabaly knew that he wouldn't protect himself. How the quote connects to me is when you give me a grade on a assignment that I think isn't fair. I have to know you are going by your rules. Another example is when I am in one of my moods and my mom or step dad ask me to do something I start to get mad and yell at them. Thats how the quote connects to me and of Mice and Men.

Mr. Kay,

This quote connects to me perfectly. I'm always trying to uphold what's right. When I knows somethings wrong I try to fix it. This quote connects to Of Mice and Men in many ways. In my opinion, it connects to George killing Lennie mainly. I say this because George knew that killing Lenne was the right thing to do. He knew that letting Lennie getting killed/tortured by Curley was wrong in every way, so he kept it from happening.

Mr. Kay,

What I take from this quote is that we all need to know what we are trying to serve justice to. Many people try to fight for something, but dont know what they are fighting for. Like Luke said, judges need to know why a certain thing is right or wrong. Our judgicial system so many times is so concerned with waht is "considered" the right thing. They get mixed up with what society wants them to beleive is right, not what the think is right. AMericans need to have their own opinion and be abkle to make decisions for themselves. Also, not to be influenced by people that dont know what they are talking about.

This quote connects to me in my everyday life. It shows how justice is not neutral, rather, it is knowing the difference between right and wrong and making sure that what is right needs to be upheld. If we did not have a set of rules in our country that every person must follow, then the line between right and wrong would become blurred. Anyone could do whatever they wanted without any consequence. In my house, I have rules I have to follow, or else I have consequences such as not being able to see my friends or use my cell phone. If there were no rules for me to follow, I would have nothing to stop me from making the wrong decision. In Of Mice and Men, this quote applies to when George kills Lennie. Sometimes with different people and situations, doing the "wrong" thing has different consequences. George may have done a terrible thing, but you have to look at it differently than a normal killing. He had good reason to kill Lennie and it needed to be done. It would be an injustice to punish George for what he did, because what he did was the best choice he could make.

After I read this, I thought of the court system as Luke did. It is easy to identify right from wrong for most people, but backing up your opinion is another thing. Judges need to decide what is right, and then gather evidence to support their decision to bring the victim down. This quote can relate to me because I won't argue towards something unless I have something to back it up with. This could relate to Of Mice and Men in the sense of George murdering Lennie. It may be considered bad because its murder, but was also a very good thing. George knew what to do to make the near future better and he did it. He didn't just go off on a rampage and kill him for no reason.

Well first of all i must agree wit what Luke L. says and that it i a very wierd worded qoute. Anyways, i think it is saying that justice isn't about the corect thing o do but doing it and supporting it and making sure others do it. Also, that is saying that make sure others know what the right thing is and then they will do it. Plus, this is like court because even though they tell people hat to do they still send them to jail or something to punish them. A different thing is everyone should know what justice is and act about it if it isn't justive. This relates to OM&M because many thing weren't with justice and some did't try to fix that. Plus George killing Lennie really wasn't the justice thing to do and no one is going to fix that so it's really the opposite of the qoute that was in this blog. Last hopefully somehow George will learn that wasn't right to do.

Justice has always meant to me to do and have what's right. This connects to me in the sense tha people cheating off of me is unjust. When a person sees this they may or may not hold up the correct way allowing no cheating. This should pertain to everyone too because no one person is above the law in the sense. Another way this connects to my life is the justice system involving people being put away. I think no matter what, if someone, anyone, breaks a law or rule, justice should be served and upheld. This quote connects to Of Mice and Men because of Lennie. Lennie is discriminated against because of his disability and people may not even know it. However, it is still wrong which means that justice should be found in these acts and then correct these errors. Lennie does not deserve this and in today's world he would not be treated like he was.

There has been a dichotomy of things that don't belong together. Night and day, right and wrong, good and evil, justice and injustice ECT.. There is a fine line for all I just explained, only there was a rarity for Of Mice And Men of a line being blurred. A twilight if you will, obviously taking a life is a taboo amongst most cultures. However, life must end for all of us, death is the only thing that makes life valuable. There is a good question for all of us, if we had control of how we die, what would we choose for death? Honorable defending a control point from foes with your last breath? Death painlessly in your sleep? Euthanize though a friend?

This quote basically means exactly what it says. You must stand behind what is right and go against the wrong in the world. However, this is a shifty issue becasue everyone has their own different interpretation of what "right" is. For example, I'm more of a conservative and what I think is right is definatey different from what liberals think. It connects to Of Mica and Men in a different way, however. Gearge felt that it was right to kill Lennie and protect him from society's consequences. Now all he needs to do is stand behind his choice to do that. Overall, this quote is very true.

Well as a teenager, there are many times in my life i have to deside between right and wrong. I have to deside if it is write to blog every night and then go through and doi every night. This connects to " Of Mice and Men" becuase of what Goerge does to Lennie at the end of the book. Goerge had to first find the right thing to do. Then when he found it he went through with it. I wouldn't call it justice, cuz its more like what is better for somebody and what isn't. When Goerge killed Lennie, Goerge was doing the better thiing for Lennie. If he hadn't, Lennie would have led a life of confusion and always being dependent on other people. So in the end if i was the judge for the case of Goerge, i would have to find the Justice in what goerge did, to try to keep Goerge from going to jail.

This quote is really hard to read, and even harder to understand. I think that this quote means that justice is not just black in white. It is a multitude of colors and can be interpreted in many different ways. This quote connects to me by using the word justice and how our word needs more of it. I believe that there are many people out on the streets that shouldn't be. I don't like the fact that many criminals killers have such short sentences for being in jail. I don,t feel safe knowing that murderers can get out on parole and walk the streets like its nothing. I think that most of as at one point have done acts of justice. This relates to Of Mice and Men, because people argue the justice of George killing Lennie. Curly believed that Lennie should of been brought to justice for killing his wife. in the end it was his friend George who made the final move.

I'm sure this quote means that you know the difference between right and wrong. That what is right, you support fully, and what is wrong you punish. This connects to me because we all have a conscious and know whats right and wrong. So when you do something wrong you feal guilt. This is your own way of punishing yourself. Sometimes your guilt wears on you and you admit to your wrong and try to make amens. This connects to Of Mice and Men through Lennie and his death. Lennie did not know his strength and really had no idea of right and wrong, George did. He knew what was right and wrong, and killing Lennie was right to him. Does he feal guilt? of course, but he is not punished by it because it was a deed that needed to be done. He would have felt more guilt watching Lennie suffer because he knows he had a disability when others don't.

when i read this quote i think of the court system. In the court system there is a judge and he should know right from wrong. Anybody could go to school to be a judge and get the job but that does not mean they know what is right and wrong. like the judge for Michael Jackson, or OJ Simpson. therefore when a case is brought to the courts attention the person under trial is found guilty or not guilty based on the opinions of there peers. although the peers may not know right from wrong the people hope that the over all average decision of their peers will come out to a fair decision. this relates to of mice and men because the whole committee consists of George. George is the only one who understood the situation and could give a fair decision.

In my opinion this quote is saying we must make a choice between what we Think is right or wrong (we cannot remain neutral). We owe it to ourselves to make the decision what we feel is right and then do what ever it takes to make the wrong, Right. I witnessed a fight at the bus stop between two people. I could just stand there and not say anything (remain neutral), but this would be wrong. I had the choice to tell the person that started the fight to just end it. It wouldn't have been right for me to not voice my opinion and let the fight continue. In Of Mice and Men, George had to make the choice to end Lennie's life before Curley could get to him. George had to make the choice to spare his friend and then go through with shooting Lennie. By shooting Lennie, George was going agains what is wrong. It would be wrong to let Curley get a hold of Lennie and kill him in a terrible way.

To me this quote means that justice only has one side. Justice can not be right and wrong it can only be one or the other. It's saying that justice should almost be pure, it should be so right that no one can deny the truth. I think this quote relates to mice and men because obviously it deals with the justice of George killing Lennie. Did he do the right thing with his actions, does he have the reasoning to uphold it. If so it should work out for everyone and the justice of the situation should show through. This quote connects to me in the way that justice should almost define your life. Although my actions are not always right and completely backed up i always try to think about them, and hope their right.

I think that this quote connects to me because I feel like I am always between the right line and the wrong line. I feel like sometimes I am crossing that line of right and wrong. I think that Geroge and Candy feels the same. George did not say I am so excited to kill Lennie. No he was not happy that his decision to kill lennie. In that note Candy was not really happy about his dog. When he had Carlson kill his pup. So I am not only one who feels that way.

This quote relates to everyday life. Its saying that justice isn't about being in between right and wrong, its finding what they think is right and staying to that. This quote is a lot like the court systems. Judges in court cases only look at the result of the case. Judges don't look at why the person might have done it they just look at what you did and punish you solely on that. This connects to Of Mice and Men because yes George killed Lennie. But it wasn't a murder just to kill someone. George killed Lennie to save him from pain and suffering. He knew that if the other men got to him they would make him suffer. But in a court they would just see this case as a murder and not look into why he did it.

This quote is hard to interpret, because it could mean different things. After reading this quote it made me think of people in my daily lives, who lie to each other, because there scared of the outcome if they were to say the truth. I personally do not believe there can be a "neutral" position in between right and wrong. for example, when your taking a test you usually either get the test answer right or you get it wrong. Later in life there will not be a in between stage, you either make the right decision or suffer through the consequences with the wrong. In the end with making the wrong decision, it may turn into the right one after all. How this quote deals with Of Mice and Men, is when the men were in the town of Weed, Lennie automatically got in trouble for just touching the girls dress, and she cried rape. This was because of Lennie's mental disorder they knew there would not be a chance that he could win.

This quote actually reminds me a lot of the saying about bystanders. how in all of our middle school "bully proofing" classes we were taught the bystander, if they didn't help, was part of the problem. i think that this quote means, that you may not be part of the problem, but your not helping the solution. its just as important to help prevent something, rather than just not joining it. This quote is an example of many day life problems. for an example someone could be spreading rumors about someone, and you know for a fact its not true. you should stand up to that instead of taking comfort in the fact that you didn't say it. for an example in Of Mice and Men takes place when Curley goes to beat up Lennie. All of the other men knew that Curley wasn't right, but they didn't help Lennie. They just watched and didn't get in between them. I think that it is very important to help be a part of a solution to something, because just being neutral doesn't really help anyone.

Everyone knows what the difference is between right and wrong. It says that justice doesnt do the best thing it finds what is right and upholds it against the wrong. This relates to Of Mice and Men in a couple of ways. One way it does is when Lennie kills Curleys wife and then George kills Lennie. When Lennie killed Curleys wife it wasnt right and he ran away. Then George found him and killed him which wasnt right either. With George killing Lennie it wasnt the right thing to do and it did no good to solve the problem. This relates to me when I get in trouble. When I know I didnt do anything bad I argue against so that its right. When I know I did something bad I dont really say much and I begin to agree with that person. This is how this quote relates to me and Of Mice and Men.

This connects to me because my mom always tells me when i ask her for help, to just do the right thing. I think this regards to a persons morality and really says something about them. We are faced with descisions everyday to just do the right thing. In OMAM there was many instances where people didnt go with the right desicion. One example of this is when George killed lennie. We all know that this was a bad decision. Next, curley was someone who also flirted with this line. He was a shitstirrer and he always went against what was right to try to start some animosity.

To me the quote means that you should always do the right thing even if everyone around you is doing the wrong thing. In Of Mice and Men George represents justice. Through out the story George was justice for Lennie. Without George, Lennie would not have been treated fairly. Lennie and people like him would not have a chance to have a normal life with a job, unless they had someone like George. At the end, George realized that there would be no justice. To prevent Lennie from suffering, George had to kill him.

And try to do the righ thing. In of mice and men this would like apply to groge shooting lennie. You may think it was the wrong thing to do but in reality hes better off being dead. If he was alive he would of been in jail adn he wouldnt of done good in jail. So george did the right thing.

Very strong worded quote but i personally see it falling in relation to pride. i feel the quote tells us as people to stnd for what we believe in. To not rethink your opinion based on others thoughts. The words finding out the right and upholding it, i can picture him talking about somebody finding the answer our their personal belief to a conflict of somesort and taking pride in it. SHowing the sense of pride by holding their head high with the thought that they feel confident in the feeling and opinion and strongly suport it.

Once again very confusing quote, but as the quote states i took mypersonal belief in what i thought it ment and stuck with it and held it high.

This quote means to me that Justice does not mean not taking a side of a story. It means picking the better side or the right side of the story. Being in the middle is not always the best sometimes it better to pick a side you think is best. But you also have to find out the right side to make this true and take the time, if needed to make the the descison. After that you must fight the wrong side. This connects to me by making think, instead of just saying im not geting involed. Everyone can serve justice all you have to to is listen and make the right decison. In Of Mice and Men as a reader you must choice if George made the right decison or Justice should take place and he should be charged. In mice of men all the characters make decisons, but not all of these desicons where Justice and fair. But like in the book, Justice does nto always find its way, but gets lost along the way.

When it comes to some things they needs to be put in the right place and thats that. This quote is all about standing up for what is right and what you believe in. Anyone can tell the difference between right and wrong but you need to actually act on it and stop the wrong from happening. That is what justice really is. This quote applies to me when people are saying mean things about my friends or being mean to my brothers. I don't just go along with the bad talk, I stick up for my friend. It makes me really mad when people try to hurt my friends or family. I always stick up for my little brothers too, people don't get away with being jerks to them. This quote connects to Of Mice and Men because George has to make the choice of right and wrong and what is the most just. Even though not killing Lennie would be the easier thing to do much like watching people be mean instead of standing up for them, he has to do it. It is the most just and the best for everyone involved.

This quote can mean many diffrent things. This really means that when deciding things you have to find what is right and stick to it. You cannot always go by the law or what others say or do. This applies to me because I always make decision based on what I think is right. This goes with Of Mice and Men because when George kills Lennie it wasnt really lawfully correct. George knows that what he did was correct and he stuck to his guns. I think this quote is true and I can relate to it.

The quote simply means to fight for what you believe in, and have the courage to defend your belief. It means that even in places where your out numbered, to find justice depends on if your heart is used. If your heart is truley into what you believe in, justice will prevail in even the darkest hour. This quote connects to me in many ways. For example arguing about my project with you, and standing up for what I believed in. You do have a way to think quick and close a conversation with such confidence its hard for people to think of something to say. When I went up to you, I was open to what you had to say, but in the end I knew I would uphold justice even in an argument with someone like yourself. It connects to of mice and men by Georges choice to kill Lennie. It was Georges best judgement to kill Lennie becasue even though others would think it wasnt a smart decision, George knew he gave Lennie justice.

I think it relates mainly to the ending with George shooting Lennie. It relates to it because George shot him to get him out of the situation he was in and to keep him out of future ones because George knew he couldn't protect him. It connect to me through the way I argue with my sister. This right thing to do would be ignoring her and walking away. For the wrong thing I could just punch her in the face and that would be the end of it. I just haven't gotten to the point where I actually hit her so I guess i'm at a good start.

I think this means that there is not always a clear right or wrong. I think that it depends on the situation. However, sometimes you must determine the wrong choice even if it seems complicated. This deffiantly has to do with "Of Mice and Men". This is because killing someone is wrong, however, not killing Lennie would also be wrong. George knew he had to kill Lennie even though killing someone is a terrible thing to do. Doing something wrong for the right reason, I believe, is actually okay. This is also like the saying, "there are always two sides of the story". This is because people may feel what they are doing are alright, and have great reasons for it, but that doesn't mean it's going to have a negative impact.

first, the connection between Of Mice And Men.
George had made a [act with himself to take care of Lennie, because it was the right thing to do. in my mind, even though it might suck, i know that caring for someone is always the right thing to do. but upholding it, is what truly makes a person great. And although it was not great of george to murder Lennie, he upheld his promise to himself as long as possible.

The connection to me. to me, it happens all to often where decisions, whether they strike me in the face, and the decision is easy to make, or wether it is as vague as religion is to me; it is always in my mind to think about the choice, and find a clear and concise thought about a subject. the biggest thing to hit me, which i am still contemplating over, is the situation where a lot of people who i thought were my friends, ended up not to be my friends, and while that trust was broken, those days wasted, and my thought of trust forever shattered, it is not in my interest to just blurb out, you’re a freaking idiot, why the hell would you do such a thing. the choice, if it is ever brought upon me, is to ask them their whole side of the story, give them my side of the story, and then give them these words: "I thought your actions were very childish, and i am sad that you find this to be something funny, and that you would waste your time. it saddens me to see such a bright person show the 5% of themselves, that everyone remembers. the bad part. it saddens me that you gave me false hope. but thank you for giving me the tools now to incline myself to find (A) better friends, and (B) people who i can trust more. it just saddens me that you choose to do this, and not to just anyone, but to the one kid who has been getting picked on for his life."

I may be made at the world, for the many ways it has wronged me, but it is never in my mind to act out against others. its not in my passive nature. but that is alright with me. the only thing though, is that being disappointed with people, happens all to often. and that leads to having a considerable amount less of trust in anyone.

Although i am still sad by the lack of trust people are giving me, and putting me through, i thank every day for the friends, who i know, will never go behind me. its good to have people to lean on.

Thank You.

i think he is trying to say that justice is not defined as one thing. its not always perfectly inbetween right and wrong, but it is where you will support it. if you don't believe in it then it doesn't make it right. as long as you figure out the right thing to do and stick to it you'll be fine. always support the better decesion. this could relate to me when i have to make decesions with friends. sometimes its not that easy to do the right thing but once you decide to just stay with it. in Of Mice and Men George killed Lennie because he knew he had to. if you look at the situation it ended up being a better solution than what others would have done to him.

The wrong thing to do is to act like it never happened. There are a few right things to do and that is for the person to decide what real justice is.

I think this quote is saying that you must stand up for what you believe in. I also think it ties in with defending your point of view. for instances if you feel something is right you should stand up for it and defend your thoughts. This is shown when everyone else wont stand up for Lennie but George does. He protects and looks after him because he believes in him. This quote is also saying if you are wrong you still should try your hardest to defend it and don't stop believing in the thing you care for. THis example is also shown when George decides to kill Lennie. He makes an extreme decision that effects both of there lives but was the best thing possible to do.

I like this quote because it says that you shouldn't just let things be. If something has happened you shouldn't sit back and not choose a side to believe. Someone should try to find out the truth and defend it. This quote connects to me because i don't believ things that are wrong just to fit in. I try my hardest to find the right, and stick with it all i can. I also can't stand being wrong. I do whatever i can to prove that im right rather than wrong. This quote connects with Of Mice and Men because the right thing for George to do was kill Lennie. The wrong thing would have been to let the others like Curley take Lennies life in their own hands. George stuck with what he believed was right and he didn't let the wrong things get in his way.

To me this quote means not many things. but i guess it means that you have to make actions toward something you want. But if you dont work toward you want it will slide away from you and you will lose it. So when you do find the right you must keep it. Also doing all you can to keep the thing you want. This compares with of mice and men by how lenny would do anything to keep his jobs tending to the rabbits. But sometimes lenny went to far at times. that how it compares with of mice and men i feel.

"Justice consists not in being neutral between right and wrong, but in finding out the right and upholding it, wherever found, against the wrong"
Theodore Roosevelt

If we could divide everything in this world into wrong or right thing, the divisions would be Right, and Wrong, and there would be no a little bit right or a little wrong. To be right is to reach to the 100% of confidential will to do what's right thing to do from their own point of view. When there's a guy in a class bullying another guy, and you just stay resentful, doing nothing about it, it's wrong thing. Silence means compliance.
At the ending of "Of Mice And Men", when Lennie goes to hide in bush and Curly, Carlson, and other guys are trying to find him, George and Slim were hesitating. They were not sure whether Lennie should get killed. Now, as applying this quote to that situation, they, who did not follow the justice on their-own-basis, were included in the injustice, not right. They were just emotionally closer to the human model.

Mr.Kay,
My computer is broken, so I went to the library to write my blog, but it wasn't up before my dance classes and the library was closed when my classes were done. Please accept this blog late.

This quote means that justice is setting apart the right from the wrong and standing up for what is right. Justice is not being the nuetral person, but standing up for what is right. This quote connects to the book, Of Mice and Men because there is a debate whether or not is was right for George to kill Lennie. Instead of picking the nuetral side, you should stand up for what you think is right. I think that George's intentions in killing Lennie were right and therefore he should not be punished for it. George also had to make the decision whether it was right or wrong fo him to kill Lennie. Another example of this quote in the book is after the men in the ranch found Lennie. Each one of the men took a side of whether Lennie's actions were right or wring, then acted upon it. This quote connects to my life because when there is a situation where I think something is wrong, (or right) I stand up for what I think. This is the only way to get your opinion across and to have what you think is right happen.

This quote connects to of Mice and Men because Lennie was handicapped and was treated differently. When he killed someone they no longer felt so bad for him though. There are more examples I'm sure, but my book is at home. How this quote connects to me is when people tell me to do something, and even though I might not want to do it, I'll still do it. Because there is probably a good reason on why they want me to do it.
Sorry these blogs are late, my laptop is from the ghetto.
