Some good work going on today. People are invested in making sure they have good thesis statements. This is what the process is all about. That is why we are taking it slowly. I gave out due dates but if we need to adjust them a bit we will.
For tonight:

I do think this is like a scenario of survival. The willingest of others to be taken down when we are low in numbers, or to take whatever we are facing, tolerance, and outlive it. Let's say we are fighting zombies, not the infectious kind. The kind were they have to kill you first in order for you to become a zombie. When you have many, you can maintain a stronghold to stave off the flesh-rotting walking corpses.
eventually we would outlive them, (taken we won't make any mistakes to a bunch of literally brain-dead idiots like in the horror movies. But when there is few, the best thing you can do to survive is to hide. And if you become found, you would be relentlessly attack until you too would join them. you can only do one thing then...take out as many as one can...or give up.

It doesn't necessary HAVE to be zombies...(cough-cough)
i think this meens that wen you are alone the real test is courage. And wen you are not alone the real test is tolerance. Wen your by yourself you could be scared. in order to get through it you must have courage. When you arent alone and your like with alot of people then you could get anoyed easily. In order to get through that you have to be able to tolerate people. if you cant tolerate people then you really cant get through life.

Wow this is one of the first quote that is striaght fowrad and i understound the first time reading it. The quote means that it takes courage to stand up for what you belive in when you are in the minority. Most likely beacasue you don't want to look like a fool in front of other people. The second half says that its hard to understand the other group(s) if you are in the majority. It's is easy to blame or dislike those that don't deside with the majority. It is a test beacsue not everyone can do it and some will fail, other will pass. Sometimes to understand someone best take a step into their life and look for their view. Anyone can compline about something but it takes someone special to do something.

What I take from this quote is when you are alone it takes courage and when you are in a group it takes tolerance. I agree with this quote on both aspects. I think it takes a lot of courage to be the minority, especially when it comes to standing up for yourself. It takes a strong person to stand up for themselves when you are faced against the majority. The Civil Rights movement is an example of this. The African Americans who were fighting for freedom were faced against many people and part of the government. It must have taken a great amount of courage for people such as Martin Luther King Jr. and Rosa Parks to stand up against so many people and knowing the consequences.
Tolerance is tested when you are in a large group. When you are in with the majority there are many people speaking all together at the same time. It takes a very patient person to wait for their turn to speak up in the midst of all the people.
"The test of courage comes when we are in the minority. The test of tolerance comes when we are in the majority."
I think that this quote applies to our society. When people are the minority, they are tested with courage from driscrimination, and poverty. They are in a struggle to gain status in society, and to fight to support themselves, and a family. But, once they are the majority, they dont always have the easy route. The majority is being looked at under a microscope. Anything they do is being watched under a microscope. The now majority is always looking for a way to get ahead and have the upper hand. They will be constantly trying to take over and pestering anyone of higher class in society.

I guess my thinking is the opposite of Shaun's. It took me a while to understand what this meant. I would have to agree that when your the minority you have to test your courage. I think this whole quote takes on the whole meaning of not taking responsibility of your own actions. When your all by yourself their is only you and you alone that can be the center of attention at a particular moment. If your in a group that group has special interests. Other people who is the minority or the person that is not in that group will be excluded because you don't share the same beliefs.

What I think this means is that when you are in smaller groups you test your courage. For example it is your first day at a school and trying to make new friends. It also means that when you are in a larger group of people you test your tolerance. For example being in a loud class room where everyone is being abnoxious. Also, I think no matter if you are in a minority or majority courage and tolerance both come into those groups. We have to learn to accept each other for who we are. Thats what I think Ralph W. Sockman was saying.
i think this quotes mean that when your on your own the real test is how you deal with the problems on your own. When your own your own you have to take the courage to do the things to survive. When your with other people its the test to tolerate. When your with a group you have to tolerate and have tolerance for the other people with you. I think you have to do both in life you have to have to courage to do things on your own and not be so scared but yet you have to have the tolerance to work with other people. I dont think you will get anywhere if you dont have to courage to do things own your own.

I agree with this quote completely. When your the minority it takes a lot of courage to stand up for what you believe in. It tests your courage because its testing to see if you are standing uo for what you believe in or if your just doing it because the majority of people are. Think about how the African Americans were discriminated against when they were braught here. If they didn't stand up for themselves things could have been the same as they were 100 years ago. I think the ways of the minortys are examined way closer than those of the majority. Tolerance comes when in the majority because people in the majority might not understand they ways of the minority. People can do a lot of complaining but it takes someone with courage to make the change.

I think this means that whne you are the under dog it takes a lot more courage to do something than when you are not the underdog. Like when America was first being made the people of America were the under dogs. Nobody thought they could take get their independence from Britain. But with their courage they made stand and hoped for the best. When your not the underdog and you have the power, you have to be able to tollorate the underdogs. Secne you are the majority you don't have to fight to get to the top anymore. You just need to be able to respect the minority for trying to get to the top.

I think one of the biggest times we will use courage in our life is when we are youth and growing up. It takes a lot of courage to stand up for your beliefs. Also, you could stand up for your friends, and yourself. But when we get older, people are mostly themselves. Many people are annoying and just hard to be around. That is when our tolerance level shows. But i think we also use tolerance as a minority too. Its not easy tolerating what your friends do or say sometimes.

i think this quote is trying to express how its test when you in these two different examples. the first one, a test of courage comes when you are in the minority, means when your in the position of being the odd man out how will you react? its hard to act couragously when you have to stand up for something you believe in and nobody else is on your side. i think the second part of the quote means like how well can you put up with people. sometimes a very hard test is to just tolerate someone you dont like. becuase if your in a big group you cant always conrtol the things people do. this also goes along with if your in the majority how well can you lead people.

I believe this statement was one of acceptance. When one is part of a minority, he may often be tread and looked upon as insignificant. At the same time, tolerance of the majority may come as a note because people tend to not tolerate those that dont meet up to their expectations. While people may have it "better" than others, that dosent mean that somebody is immune to insult or harm. Because of this, people should respect other's opinions, lifestyles, and social standing, be them low or high. Hopefully people will sometime learn this, but i doubt it. Perhaps the next generation will learn this, and therefore prevent any of the socio-ecological problems in this country, nay, the world.

this quote is explaining the truth about transendentalism. when you are in the minority or a different place than everyone else it can be hard. you have to stay strong and stick with what you belive in. this is where courage comes into play. you shouldn't care what others think of you. also tolerance has a big role too. if you are different and don't want to be looked down upon don't do it to others. you hae to accept everyone for who they are, or else you are conforming against others.
there is one way to express my ideas about this statement, wow. this is a puzzling question to me.
if you like to do different things, things that most people dissagree with, you must show courage. courage is dignity to do things other people dont do. this makes you different and you can try to pursuade them to listen to youre beliefs and they might like or not like youre idea's
I think that this quote means that when you are in the minority, it takes more courage, and in the majority, it takes more tolerance. I agree with this quote completley. Because it takes more courage to take a stand and stand up for what you beleive in. This quote is a great example of transcendentalism. Because it takes a very strong perosn to stand up against what everyone else thinks. But in cases where you are in a large group of people, you need more tolerance than courage, because you need to wait your turn to talk, and respect others thoughts that are a part of the group. Because to be a part of the group, you need to participate, but also listen to what others think as well.

I believe that the quote means that when people are at the lowest they could be. That it takes courage to stand up or what you believe in. But being the superior, you tend to be less tolerant of those around you. That the ones who belive those things should be changed, only because you feel that you're more important than they are.
Being the lowest on the food chain since I was little, I've been trying to muster the courage to fight for what I believe in. not what the 'rich, goody-two-shoes' can buy their way into.
If there was a time where the weak ones rose against the superiors,I'd be there, second in command, fighting the good fight.

When we are on the lower end of control in a situation will we have the courage to stand up for whats at hand. This sounds like a test sort of in war, like as to when your on the losing side do you still have the courage to fight. If your on the winning side will you accept their surrender. This isnt what hes trying to explain though. So when you have the upper hand will you except. If you have the lower end will you stand for what you think. This says to me that would you tolerate as if to maybe would the other person tolerate you if he was in the situation. The thing is you would never know. You cant just jump from being the majority to the minority.
That might make no sense to no one else.

Mr. Kay,
What this quote is saying is that courage is standing up for what you believe in and what you are doing. Standing up for what you are doing might not always be a positive. Sometimes what you are doing isnt going as good as you had hoped but it takes real courage top keep pushing yourslef through it. when you are the majority, you usually look down to other people. You dont really agree with what people are doing below you and may disrespect them, but this is when tolerance comes in. You have to tolerate what other people are doing, even if you dont agree with them.
I agree with derbear that this has to do with survival. When you are in small numbers, courage is tested by the means to survive. When theres only a small group and one stands out the most, its a sign of that person being courages of leading the group. I just cant stop praising derbear, zombies is a perfect example. If your in the majority and are being attacked by insane zombies, theres always heroics mixed in with fear. There could be more than one person who wants to save everyone from the zombies. Now this time there are the infectious kind of zombies, which can drive people who arent infected crazy. When its a difference between life and death, peeple in a large group seem to always loose their heads. They dont think clear and everyone gets frustrated with eachother.

Mr. Kay,
Minority and Majority happen in our society constantly. When you are a minority you are fighting discrimination and sometimes poverty. They are trying to fit in and be like. In contrast the majority people just kind of blend in. They are trying to seperate themselves from the crowd. They constantly try to get ahead. They constantly want to have control and they want the upper hand in everything. Thats how majoritys and minortys work in society.

This quote i also find to be very difficult but i believe it means the way we judge and deal with differences in our society. But i believe that this quote means that people who choose to be social or "majority" must stay tolerant to transendental people. For example if a group of social people come across a individual person, the group must respect his wishes and beliefs and leave that person alone. For the other side, i believe that all minorities must deal and take the role of courage. to feel as if you cares what people think of me im standing up for what i believe in and follow. But for this quote i believe that the job that is going to need to be filled best is the mojority group. I find this because there is so many more social people in a group lets say than the one transendental indiviual that they choose to antaginize. While all the one minority has to worry about is staying strong for what they believs and that is courage torward being individual.

This quote is very blunt. I believe that it's talking about survival. For example when he said "the test of comes when we are in the minority." I believe he was talking about when you are alone you are the most scared. then when he said that "the test of tolerance comes when we are in the majority." He was trying to say that you are kind of putting on a show for people to think that you are a bad ass. I think that the first part was was trying to say that you have to prove to yourself that you can do whatever you want.

This qoute can mean many things and does. In the first part it is saying that when we are down you have to have courage to become better. Also, it can be saying that to show courage you need to be low on something, whether it be numbers or even a grade, you need to bounce back. Now for the other part it's saying that when you are in a big group you have to realize you're not the center of attention. Also that you have to have petience in life when you aren't number 1. Another thing is that to always have a positive attitude. That doesn't have to just go with being in the majority but can also go in the minority. Last thing is no matter where you are in life always show courage and tolerance no matter what is going on.

This quote really points out why some people cannont take being in groups at all. The minorities are obviously the smaller group. They have to be more corageous in society because they aren't the respected ones. Their voices are generally much quieter than those of majority groups. Minorities have everything to fight for while majorites have to tolerate whatever the main person or idea states. This is why tolerance plays a big role in majorities. They also have quiet voices as individuals. However they have smaller chances of being heard. Things cannot be changed as easy as in minorities. People that are part of a majority do not have to be courageous. They are the people that are part of the larger group. The larger groups will be heard first and then the smaller groups.

Honestly, I'm still unclear on what this quote is trying to say, but I'll give it a shot. From what I understand I'm taking from this quote is it take courage to do things we do. To stand up for what you believe, and anything that is important to you. Most people are always worried about their "image" and what people think of them. When people really should be worried all the important things. Everyone gets to caught up their own social life It's true with most girls and boys are with there friends, they don't like to show their true colors. Always afraid there friends wouldn't like them. It takes courage to be your own person, when everyone else hides in the shadows.

I'm not exactly sure what this is saying but I'm guessing that it means that it's harder to stand up to a lot of people then a little people. When you stand up to a lot of people it takes more courage. Like if you and your friend has a disagreement it is easier to stand up to them then all your friends. I guess what the second part is saying is that you can't make an argument on every little thing. So you must pick your battles. This excercises tolerence. However, I don't believe that that is any different between the majority or minority.

When I hear this qoute i think of Darwim. In away it is just like it. It is very true. Not to be raciest but you see people like Biggie. Biggie grew up with no money. And he got older he told himself that he would not saty that way. When Biggie became famous his good friend puffy told him that with "mo money mo problems". And that is true. Lokk at the celebs now. They have all the drama. More then I can handle.
I think this quote is basically saying that when you are a member of the minority, you are faced with difficult situations and must be willing to stand up to them. On the contrary, when you are part of a majority, you must learn to live with the minority. Or simply, include them in your everyday lives. Most of the time people in majorities think their stronger than minorities, and therefore pick on them and tease them. But, it is the successful people in life that learn to tolerate the smaller group of people and live through it. Even pretend that they like them when they really dont. That is the real test. I think tolerance is one of the most importand values you can have, for this reason. It is necessary to have this value to be successful.
this quote is saying that standing up for what you believe in you like or something that you like is the act of courage. don't take this the wrong way but sometimes doing you like don't always seem as easy it may take some courage to do it. when you are a minority you tend to look down on people that are smaller than you. you might tend to think that the things that the people below you do is worthless. just because you are a minority it doesn't mean that you are better that them. you have to treat them with the same respect that you want to be treated with. that is my opinion on this quote.
"The test of courage comes when we are in the minority. The test of tolerance comes when we are in the majority."

I think this quote is saying that minority has to have more courage then the majority because theyre alone. The minority has to persevere in their beliefs. For example: when the african americans went thru slavery the majority was the southern states, opposing to the north. or when your at a highschool party and everyone is agreeing on something but someone doesnt want to do it, that takes a lot of courage to say no. ANd it also takes courage to tolerate it but they need to get over it.

"The test of courage comes when we are in the minority. The test of tolerance comes when we are in the majority."
I think the quote can deal with survival and everyday life. If people are in a band or group surviving in the woods you would have a greater chance of living. If something threatened you your ability to fend yourself with others covering your back is greater. Now if you were by yourself out with no one you would be screwed. Knowing you have no one to talk to or get help from your thinking what to do. Most people that survive like this get it from courage and the will to live. This quote goes into everyday life by thinking work, school, people, etc. Doing things by yorself like mayby standing up for yourself in a tough situation would need courage. If you were in a group of peers you would have other people like you to back you up. That would be considered tolorance.
I believe this quote means that it is easier to stand up in front of a small group rather than a large group. It takes a lot of courage to stand up in front of any size group. The difference is saying what you believe in, in front of those peopole. When you are in front of a small group it takes some courage to say something. It does becasue those people will speak out too. When you are with a large group you have to tolerate their opinions. All in all this quote is pretty confusing and it takes some time to understand it correctly.

This quote expresses bravery in nonconformists. It's like taking a shortcut. It's easier to get lost, or screw up but ultimately it may be the better choice. But it's bravery that drives you to commit alternative routes. If it was easy it wouldn't be a shortcut it would just be the way. In time the way becomes repetitive. It turns into how much more of the same thing can you tolerate. How much more traffic on the freeway can you handle until you force yourself to take the shortcut.

This quote to me means that , you know you have courage when you can stand up for something you believe in , no matter what the consequence is. Many people in history stood up for what they believe in and fought for it. For example , Martin Luther King Jr. and Rosa Parks were the minority but still went forward in doing what they believed was right. They took a chance and did something out of the ordinary knowing what the consequence was. It takes tolerance to be in the majority because there are many people all with ideas. The majority is usually sectioned off into groups and each group has their own opinions on politics or the world etc. And not everyone gets along so it takes a tolerant and pacient person to deal with that.

Mr. Kay,
This quote is very true in many ways. The second part of the quote states that "The test of tolerance comes when we are in the majority". I believe that we as teens are being tested everyday. For example, when we are in the class room, we have to be tolerant when the teacher just won't shut up and give us the assignment. No offence Mr. Kay, you are one of the teacher's that I enjoy listening to :)Sometimes we can be challenged for tolerance when we are in our groups at school, or when having a talk with our parents. You have to be tolerant and wait until they have said what they need to say, and then you can talk. (Even if they tend to jump in and not let you finish what you where saying). Some of us have a really good way of handling our tolerance, not saying that you don't. In the first part of the quote it states "The test of courage comes when we are in the minority". I believe that this means that even when we are in the smaller group, if you really believe in what you believe, then you should have the courage to speak up and make others listen to you for a change. If people know that you know what your doing and know what your saying, then they will listen. It takes alot of courage to stand up in front of a group and make a statment that says "Wow. They really believe in this. I want to be more like that", if you can do that, you can conquer the world. It shouldn't matter what other people think, who cares what they say. If they don't like it then to bad, they'll have to get over it. When it comes time to be tested, don't be afraid to prove who you really are. If you have a harder time tolerating things, or standing up for something that you believe in, then maybe you should start testing yourself at your house, or when your around your friends. Don't go overboard, but every once in a while, when you think of it, try to test yourself. So that when you are tested, you will at least now what its like.

The people that aren't in the popular group i think have the most courage because they don't care as much about what everyone else thinks of them. I think the kids in the popular have to learn to tolerate people that act different from them, like the unpopular group. I think that it would be harder to stand up for what you believe in when you are in a majority because usually people are to worried about what their friends will think of them. I think that everyone should try to tolerate others, I hate people that make fun of others because they are different. I respect the people that have courage because it takes a lot of guts to say what you believe if it's in a different mindset from the other groups. When you are in a majority i don't think that people want to have their own thought, I think this because everyone else is thinking for you, and making your decisions. I think that i have courage to stand up for myself and make my own decisions, i wouldn't like it if someone else thought for me.
I think this quotes mean that when your on your own, the real test is how you deal with the problems by your self. Its whatever you are facing tolerance, and how you outlive it. It takes a lot of courage to be the minority. Especially when it comes to standing up for yourself and whats right. I think being the majoriy is to be the center, and the best you can be. You have to start taking responisablites for your own actions. I think this also goes along with if your in the majority and how well can you lead people.
"The test of courage comes when we are in the minority. The test of tolerance comes when we are in the majority."
I think this quote might mean that when you are with few, or alone, you must be brave? And when your with a whole bunch of people you have to tolerate them? I'm not sure actually. This quote confuses me. I think I understand it to an extent but then bam, I don't anymore. Well Actually I kind of understand it but don't know how to explain it. It's pretty much saying people are annoying, or at least that's what it sounds like it's saying. lol.

What i think this quote means is when you are alone it takes courage and when you are in a group it takes tolerance. I think it takes a lot of courage to be in the majority. Epically when you are sticking up for your self, or something. It takes a lot of strength to stand up for your self against the majority. Once your in the majority, you don't just get off so easy. You are being watched every step you make. The majority now is always trying to be ahead of everyone.
I think it means we have to test our strength as a small group. To work together and survive and not do anything stupid. If your in a small group and you have a bunch of headstrong people it will just diminish slowly when people decide to be idiots. For the other part of the quote I believe it means that we test how much we can take of people as a large group. If theres a group of people its easy to ignore people or just not tolerate them. The real challenge is leting the people of the outer circle come in and be part of the group. Instead of shunning them becuase the rest of the majority is.

When we are young we start learning to stand up for ourselves. We have to learn to be brave and say what we think. When we get older we know better than to just say what we think. We know tha sometimes when we do that it can hurt someone's feelings. So tolerance shows when we put up with things we have to do even if we don't like it. Tolerance is one of the most important things to know when you're older for bosses, annoying "friends", or neighbors. It's important to be courageous when you are younger so you have a good balance betwenn it and tolerance as you grow up. There's a point when you have to stand up for yourself and when that point is crossed by someone, speak your mind and give your opinion.

This quote is stating that when you are the odd one out, your courage is truly tested, and when you are with the group, you need to be considerate of others. When you are walking the opposite direction that everyone else is, it is hard to stay strong. You will have to endure much more than the majority will, even if it does not seem fair. Knowing this, though, you need to remember to think of the minority's opinions and beliefs as well as your own. All of us have had a time where we have gone against the crowd. We should be more considerate of others and take in their side on the issue, just as you would want someone in the majority to do for you. Just because people have differing viewpoints does not mean that they cannot be tolerant toward eachother.

It takes courage to have your voice heard when you are in the minority. You stand up to the criticisms. Sometimes you may feel like you are the only one there. Tolerance is the ability or willingness to tolerate something, in particular the existence of opinions or behavior that one does not necessarily agree with popular opinion. The test of tolerance is when you are willing to listen to some thing other than popular opinion. Tolerance is listening to that opinion and not placating. To be truly tolerant, if the opinion is right, you have to act upon it and change the opinion of the majority.
I think this quote is especially true in high schools. It is the people who act or look different who have the most courage. These people are normally know to others as the unpopular people. And it is the people who act and look similar who have to tolerate the people who are different. These would be the popular kids. I think it is the people who do act different who are the strongest as a person. This is why i give andrew alot of credit because even though he gets harassed for wearing the cloak he still does it because him as a person.

It takes courage to be able to have little people in your life, or you are alone. You have so much on your shoulders and have little people to support you. Sometimes it can mean if you fall, no one could be there to catch you. On the other hand, you need to have a lot of patience to deal with a large amount of people in your life. You need to be able to cope with the stress, and not let things get to you. Few people takes courage because of the possible lonliness, but tooo many people can become a hassle. I think people aim for the even spot in the middle, having just the right amount of people in thier lives. Not to many, but not to little.

Mr. Kay,
The quote by Ralph W. Sockman explains the views upon minorities and majorities of people. He says the minorities of what ever they are singled out from need to have the courage to join the majority (if they want). At the same time, if you are a part of the majority, he says you need to be tolerable of the minorities. When I read this and I see the word "test" in there, It makes me think of something should be done and done properly. So, the test of tolerance means that majorities should properly and efficiently communicate the minorities that need the attention. To sun the quote up it mainly says, take the initiative. Always step forward and whether being tolerable or courageous, it will need to better exception in a social world.

This quote is all about being tolerant and not discriminating against others. When we are in a big crown and there's one person that stands out we should support them and not make fun of them or be mean. It takes a lot of courage to break away from what everyone else is doing. When it is you, you hope that no one is going to cut you down for it. It goes along with the golden rule. Treat others as you want to be treated. The golden rule is a very important part of life and tests us all. We're all in this together and need to be tolerant of one another.
This quote means two things. One, that when you're in the minority it takes a lot of courage to stand up for what you believe in. Two, that when you're a part of majority you have to tolerate what other people think. I believe that when you're in the minority it's easier to stand up for what you think because there are less people to judge you. Whereas in the majority it's harder because there are more people to judge you. But when you're in the majority it's easier to follow the crowd than do what you want to do. Like in mobs, it's easy to follow other people rather than try to stand against them.

this quote means to me that your always tested when your in the minority. The courage always comes when you are alone. The courage to just be yourself and be part of the minority is being really brave. The test of tolerance comes in the majority. I think this means that when your in the majority you have to tolerate everyone being alike. Everyone acting the same, because there not different. To be in the minority is really showing that it takes a lot of strength to be different.
"The test of courage comes when we are in the minority." i know for a fact that this means, when your alone in the crowd, you need to stand up for yourself, and when you have the gutz to do so, you have not pasted this test, you have achieved a higher goal, that of which being that you stand up for what you believe in and do not care what others think. i do this quite a lot.
The test of tolerance comes when we are in the majority." so many people need to understand the importance of tolerance. that means to accept these people for who they are. a big thing in this country right now, and about how we respect certain people, is with the homosexual community. people need to understand that we have a big choice, with a big consequence. either we can accept them, and still call ourselves free, or we can deny them of everything, but with that, we will not be able to call ourselves a free country any more, and i believe thats what we all want. but for some, i guess they do not want to pay the price of tolerance to call yourself free.

Mr.Kay,
When Sockman says minority I think he means when your the only one who is thinking diffrently about something. Or you are the only one standing up and taking action. When He says Majority I think he means that when other people are going by what they say and doing just as they are. To me the first sentance means that when we stand alone Our courage is tested by seeing if you will keep pursuing you thoughts and not give up. The second sentence means that when peoples actions are similar to yours your tolerance is tested by by seeing how long we will allow others to be around. The hard times in our life are the times when we are tested on what we've learned. I think that every test in life is a way to see how strong we are as and individual.

When you have a few people in a group you are trying to get to the bigger group. You have to be strong and fight your way thruogh. Also since there are less people to help you, you are more on your own. You have to figure out things on your own. So you need more courage to make it through. When you have more people in your group there is more compettion. You are always competing and tring to be the better person. Also there may be some people that you don't like in that group so you have to have more tolerance and deal with them.
