Day 22

Hope the paper information I gave out today was helpful. Remember to have a thesis tomorrow for me to look at as well as, by the end of the hour, your first paragraph. We will be looking at some writing strategies for this paper to help guide you. The reason we are doing this slowly is to give you techniques in writing to help you from here on out.

For today:

"Perhaps the most valuable result of all education is the ability to make yourself do the thing you have to do, when it ought to be done, whether you like it or not; it is the first lesson that ought to be learned; and however early a man's training begins, it is probably the last lesson that he learns thoroughly."

I think this means the most important lessons are the hardest ones to be learned. Its always the lessons we have to learn by are slefs that are the ones that are the hardest to learn. When we have to learn something on are own its harder because we dont have someone there to help us learn them. When we do something we learn from the wrong and the right we do. We learn from all the mistakes we make even though the lessons we learn are hard we still learn them and make ourselfs better from them. You have to do what you have to do to make yourself better whatever it is learn from it and make yourself stronger.

This quote means to mean the everyone should learn just to get things done. Whether you want to do it or not somethings just have to get done. The second meaning i see is that most learn this ability when they are young but don't understand it till later. Not get things done is what i call someone is lazy they know they should do but don't. It should be taught by someones parents and should be enforeced to make sure. If you can't do something thats another story but what you can do you should do. Even if it means that it takes more time or its the harder way.

This quote really affects me. And I think that it affects everyone. Sometimes I am not motivated to do anythink. Mostly it is home work or school suff. But I know that I have to do it to suceed. For example, I really don't feel like writing this, but I know that I have to because I need the grade. Also I really don't feel like staying after school for 15 min. If you do something early then you know you can do something else that you like to do later. Education is a important thing and if you don't get any you are going to be really stupid and not go anywhere in life. So it is good to do things early and get them done.

I agree with this quote. Even though i wish it were not true when you something needs to been done like home work or chores it doesn't matter if you want to do it or not. It doesn;t matter if you don't like to do it. Either way you have to do it. If you learn that then your life will be much easier rather than always complaning about it. If you learn that when things need to be done even though you don't want to do them will be much easier if you don't complain and just do it. What i think he means when he says that it is the last lesson you will learn throughly is that your not always going to want to do stuff. But when it coimes down to it you will have to push through and do it. That will probly take a long time to sink into your head.

I think Huxley is stating that the most important lesson you learn is to do the things that need to be done when it needs to be done. I agree with Huxley because procrastination does not help you move forward. From experience, I know when you procrastinate more and more tasks build up and it takes longer for you to get out of the mess than to do the original task in the first place. Procrastination also leaves a burden. Every day that you don't do what needs to be done, you are consistently reminding yourself of it, even if it is absentmindedly. Also, if you don't do things when they need to be done, you have to put off other tasks in the future that you may want to do more than the original task. For example, if you have a week to finish a paper and wait for the weekend to do it, if an unexpected plan comes up, you will have to miss it to finish the paper. It seems if you do what needs to be done, even if you don't want to, you will be satisfied with the end result because you don't have to worry about it anymore. I also agree when Huxley states, "...it is probably the last lesson that he learns thoroughly." Like many other lessons in life, doing what needs to be done is learned through experience. It may take many different circumstances to learn that it is best to do things when they need to be done.

I think that a part of this quote is persistence. If you are doing someting that may not be interesting, or maybe its time consuming, you have to just work through it. i think that is what he is trying to imply. i think that this is a thing everyone should one day get a grasp of. And it should become such routine that everyone should thuroughly learn this. I think that when he says it is the last thing we are learining thuroughly, he is meaning that we all are doing this so frequently through education that we learn it so well. This goes in hand with all schoolwork and sometimes jobs. No matter how boring or hard your job may be, you have to be able to put things aside and buckle down and finish it.

What I think this means is that we all have the ability to learn something if we like it or not. I also think it means that its the first lesson that has to be taken seriously. I think when we go to class and learn a new lesson then we do the homework and we don't know what to do, then we go over it in class then we see what we did wrong. Also, I think that this means that you have to make your self want to learn. I think everybody has the ability to make them selfs learn because everyone is interested in something. Also, I think the last part of the quote means that if you know everything before the last lesson, you will understand the last lesson. This is what Thomas H. Huxley was saying.

I think that this quote means you must learn to do stuff you don't like before you can move on in life. Even if there is a job you love, you can't love every aspect of it. So to be able to enjoy the rest you must do the stuff you dont necessarily want to. If you don't learn to do stuff you don't like you will end up blowing everthing off. Then you won't get hired or be able to achieve greatness. Such as, a marathon runner. You can't expect to win the big race if you don't practice first. Doing stuff you don't like is apart of life, so you have to get used to it.

I believe this is saying that the hardest thing to learn is to get things whether you want to or not. People have a natural tendency to want to just "blow off" anything that dosent interest them. This being a feat from birth, perhaps it would be best to learn this lesson as early as possible to ensure it to be somthing youd use at an older age. If people would just get done what needed to get done, surely the world would be a better place. Aside from the things in life out of mankind's control, everything else sure would be a lot better. More food could be produced, more research done, homes built, and so on. Perhaps persistance and the drive to devote it to a task is what people need, but whatever the case, a whole lot more would probobly get done.

I think that Huxley is stating that the most valuable lesson is the ability to make yourself do the things you have to do, when it needs to be done. I agree completly with the quote. For example, if you know you have a test to study for, and you keep procrastinating until its too late, then you arent accomplishing the things you need to do that day. Also, if you procrastinate about doing a homework assignment or project, you arent doing the things you need to do. This lesson will help you through out the rest of your life. And he's saying that,if you get enouh training or help with it, then it will really help you in the future. And whether you like it or not, you need to accomplish your goals and the things you need to do.

Mr. Kay,

I believe that Thomas H. Huxley made this statement for a reason. Well I mean oddviously he made this quote for a reason, but I think he made this quote to explain the meaning of hardwork. When Huxley said "Perhaps the most valuable result of all education is the ability to make yourself do the thing you have to do, when it ought to be done, whether you like it or not;" I think he is explaining that if you want to be successful in life, its going to take more than just getting it done. Its going to take effort, and whether we like it or not, Its going to effect us in one way or another. I personally like this quote, I think it makes a very good point.

I think that Huxley is saying that education teaches you get the thing you need to do get done. People say that most of what you learn in some of your classes you will never use in real life. I can see that in some classes but they all teach you responsibility and being able to get a task done on time with good quality. How you act in school is a good result of how you will act at your job when your older. If your lazy and don't do your work in high school or college , its a good guess that those actions wont change when you have a job. So school helps you get prepared to have a job and be successful. No one likes to do homework but that teaches you do get things done that you don't want to do. That is probabley the most important lesson you can learn in school , to get the things you need to do done.

Huxley is saying that getting things done that need to be done is the first and formost important value that you earn at a young age. If you can even do something like school, there is no possible way to have a work ethic. Working in your life, I believe, is an extremely important value. Working should come second nature to people. Life is all about work and being able to get things done is a good tool to have. Many things in life you have to do. Not everything is something that you would want to do. You have to adjust and go with whatever life throws at you. Work will always be a factor and that's why he says that this will be the last value that you learn thoroughly. Procrastinating is one of the worst things that anyone can do. Usually when you procrastinate you forget or rush. Getting things done on time and correctly is a great thing.

I think this quote expresses the meaning of independence. It expresses that the lesson of independence can't be taught, it has to be learned. Lessons get passed down through generations but i don't think they get appreciated. To understand the full meaning of a lesson has to be done by experience. You have to learn from mistakes and victories. You could hear others examples, but there not real until you experience it. People tell you to do your work, or get things done, but i think that hurts more than helps. From the time of infancy we were told what to do. I think we have to decide how to spend our energy, and whats really important.

This quote is very true and is a part of my life. Doing work or things needed to be done is important. Most of us are taught to do what we are told. If we refuse to do this, theres most likely a sort of punishmet. Like everyday we have to do a blog for this class. We have a few rules on this assignment but nothing much. If we dont attend on this we get to stay after school for a punishment. The reason we dont totaly learn to do things expected of us until later is because were all little rebels. We tend to blow off things like work right now because were to lazy to do it and dont fully understand why its important.

I think this is saying that the lesson that is most important should be tought first. Also, that the lesson is to never give up because of the factor that you have to always do your best. Another thing is it means that no matter if it's easy or hard you have to learn just to do it. Along with that just get it over with fast so you don't have to worry about it. Plus you have to learn no matter what is at stake you have to get everything done. Whether it be for a job or just helping plan for a party just get it done. Last is never forget about the little things or it will screw everthing up.

Hm. a tricky one. I think it means that learning a lesson is easy, but when it is an important life lesson, it takes years upon years to understand it.

People says school is important. I think its a crafty way to waste time so parents can rest for a while. It'll probably take me a while to even TRY to comprehend the reason why it's important. oh well. I interpreted this quote by you do the things you do because you have to. If we all had a choice in life to do stuff, like chores, homework, studying and practicing sports only if we wanted to not because we had to, nothing ever would get done. We would all chose the easier way, just so it would be easier on us. It's the things in life we have to do, to make us stronger and well prepared for life. Once we get a career that we would do for the rest of our lives you're not going to get away with not being properly prepared because "you didn't feel like it". It's unacceptable. Everything we do while were young, is for a reason. However, we may not appreciate it now, or want to ever do it. Though we know it's for the better.

For me personally it is really hard to come to terms with this topic on education. As a student and as a person, at some times this concept can be hard. Sometimes we just want to go home from a busy day of school or work and just go sit on the couch or take a nap. Given that this is not the right choice but we all make it at one point. As I get older it has been somewhat easier to make myself do some of the ridiculous homework assignments that teachers throw on us. Especially 20 problems in geometry on triangle proofs. But, like most things, what needs to be done, needs to be done. This is where I agree with Thomas Huxley. Lets say that you have to clean the bathroom. Not many of us like to clean the bathroom but we have to do it. It's just the reality of life.

To me, Huxley is stating that you shouldnt procrasinate; you just need to get the job done. If you never did what you didnt want to do, [like go to school] how would you get smart? Plus, if you neverr did anythiing you wanted to do nothing would ever get done. For me, im a huge procrasinater, i hold off everything til the last second, so in the long run i never really fully show my potential. It doesnt matter how smart you are, you just need to get it done, For example: if you were a assigned to write a paper on monday and it was due the next monday, many would hold off til the weekend to write it because they prolly have other hmwrk to do. So, this means by the weekend while all their friends are havin fun theyre goin to have to write their essay.. This quote means that education is key. People always try to avoid working hard. They think that if they just do some sort or work they can get by. I think what Huxley was trying to say is, people try to avoid work for so long. Saying it was probably just easier in the first place to do the work correct than try to put it off. Doing work correctly and always doing it is hard because sometimes you want to slack off. So it makes it hard to do it right all the time. That is why I think he says that it is the last lesson someone learns in education.

Mr. Kay,
The main point here is motivation. When things get tough you have to motivate yourself to push harder. You cannot quit something you started. For example, in school the main objective is to turn your assignments in, and done well. You cant just not do the assignmnets and expect to succeed. I agree that most people dont learn this til the end. We have to mature, and as we do we find out about hard work. Most of us are going nowhere in life unless we work diligently.

i think that this quote means that the lessons the are the most important to learn might be the hardest ones to learn. usually the hardest lesson to learn are the ones that you have to learn on your own. the reason that it is harder to learn things on your own is because there is no one to keep you on track to learn it. when we learn new thing it is most likely because we made a mistake and we learned from it. in some way everyday we learn a new lesson but we might not realize it. only we can understand what we learn.

I think this quote means that you should always try no matter if you like it or not because some day you may need to use that lesson. You may not want to learn something but you do need it. Once you have accomplished that you wont have to learn it again or go through it. An example of this could be school. Once you have gone thorugh elementary, middle and high school, you wont have to do it again. You may not have wanted to do all this but at least now that your done you wont have to go through it again. I think that this is the point that Huxley is tryong to get across.

Everyone has deadlines and tasks that need to be done, whether they like it or not they know it needs to be done. This value doesnt always need to apply to school, it can relate to life and how to get where you want to be. You cant go anywhere in life if you choose not to do something because you dont want too.

In order to be successful you need to learn responsibilty, and need to mature. When you get in the habbit of doing things on time, and with effort, you learn those things. It also puts you in the state of mind to be able to keep your priorities straight. This happens to be the worst lesson to learn, i think. Its hard to get in the habbit of doing what you need to do even when you don't feel like it. No matter how hard it is you need this for your whole life. The lessons we learn stay with us our whole lives, and the one of reponsibitly is the most valuable, but hardest lesson to learn.

To learn all that we need to know we need people to help guide us. Someone that will teach us what's right and what's wrong. But even though there's someone there to guide us, it still takes us a long time to learn that lesson thoroughly. That's why there's always more to learn.

This quote is expressing the need to get everything you need done finished. Not only do you need to finsih something, you need to get it done in a timely matter. I know that I procrastinate sometimes, and it never works. Procrastination leads to more stress and a lower quality of the finished product (if it even gets finished on time). School is one of the best ways for kids to learn about procrastination. There are deadlines for everything, and you have to complete a project whether you want to or not - otherwise your grade will suffer. Having to plan about how you are going to manage your time and acting on your time management plan are important skills to aquire as well. Even this paper that we are beginning to write will require us to use our time effectively in order to turn in a good paper on time. Once you master time management, life is less stressful and more productive.

I think it is talking about work ethic. Not everyone has a good work ethic in the beging but as they mature they understand they need to get stuff done when they need to. Like I could have a choice between doing a project of going and hanging out with my firends. I would get my work done first then hang out with my friends. Even though I dont want to do the project but who likes to do projects anyway. And most people wouldnt have a solid work ethic until they graduate from school. So when their working they et everything done on time and properly and get paid better. And enjoy their job more ever if they hate it becuase its less stuff they need to do later.

I think Huxley is saying that the motivation to do the things you have to do is the most important thing you learn in life. He also says that it is a very long process. This is because it starts very early, and all the things experienced in life must happen in order for someone to fully learn this lesson. For example, I have had a problem lately with getting my homework done at home. I often procrastinate and do my homework in school after I do the work for that class. This quote, in my opinion can contradict the ideas on individualism. This is becasue it is not good to resist doing things on time. If you must do something, whether you like it or not, you must do it. No questions asked. This would be more of a strong work ethic value.

I think this statement means the most important lessons are the the hardest one to be learned. We always have to learn lessons by what we do, and our actions. The lessons we have to learn by our self, are the ones that always seem to be the hardest ones learned. Its harder beacuse we dont have someone guiding us the way threw it all. We have to teach our self the lessons by our selfs. From mistakes we have made, are lessons learned. Even though you might go and do it again, but it was still a lesson taught. Do things that need to be done, when it needs to be done.

The point of this is to say not many people like education and school but in the end, you will understand how to take on life's challenges. Since I've been in middle school, everyday I complain about school and the annoyances of such. I hate going to school but I know when I am finished with it I will know I will walk away with something. I hate going but it enjoy the end result. I will walk away with good morals like know I never quit and I will know how to deal with things I don't like. SO this quote explains what I have been thinking. I think this quote is also true because you might not learn a ton in the later tears of education but it is always it just shoves the idea of this quote down our throat even more. What I am trying to say is after a while, some ideas we learn are near pointless, but the more we deal with it, the more we learn of this idea. This is why, no matter how annoyed I get by school, I will always stick with it to learn the lessons I need to.

No matter what you still have to just to ba able to move on. If you don't do things by the dew day or when they need to be done, its gonna be really hard to learn something else without knowing what you previsoly learned. It seems many people have yet to figure out how to do so. If you don't do something when it needs to be done then you could get in trouble, say at work for instance. If you work at like a movie theater and they want the popcorn to be refilled or something and you decide its cool to just not refill it you may get in trouble with the boss or something. Or say what if someone was dying and the hospital didn't feel like taking care of it just then? you could loose a life. So I guess everyone should just learn to act on time idk.

Perhaps the most valuable result of all education is the ability to make yourself do the thing you have to do, when it ought to be done, whether you like it or not; it is the first lesson that ought to be learned; and however early a man's training begins, it is probably the last lesson that he learns thoroughly.

Thsi quote is very tricky but i have a feeling that it means that you shall take every lesson seriously. Not to go through the motion of learning but to absorb all information. Not to take the lesson thinking, aww just another thing that is trying to educatem me. But instead always think to your self as if it were the last lesson you will ever learn. Or as if it were the lesson that from this point forward that you need in order to live. Absorbing info this way creates very easy self rememberence. One last thing to remember is not to just go along andjust play it out, be for real and take in all info shown or given.

This quote is saying that one of the main goals of education is not only to teach, but to teach you how to do the things that you really dont want to do. I think that the hardest lessons in life are learned through experience. School nor family can tell you exactly how to learn things. But they can prepare you. By the time your 18, you should know what should and shouldnt get done. Whether you like somethings or not, you just have to suck it up and do it. You shouldnt procrastinate, you should just get the job done immediately. It will all pay off in the long run.

I think that this meens that most of the time the important lessons to be learned are also often the hardest ones. There are many lessons to learn each and every day. When we are little we learn like how to talk and walk. We have been learning how to do things from a very young age. We learn all of these lessons for wen we grow up.Even then there are still many lessons to learn. We learn these so when there is a job that needs to be done we will be able to do that.

I think that the value of doing things whether you want to or not is a very iportant value and takes a long time to learn. That is true in my life and applies to a lot of things. When I come home from school after a long day, the last thing I want to do is homework and leave the house again at 5:30. But homework is important so that I can get good grades and keep my parents happy. So I try to do all my homework but 9 times out of 10 I will get started and just stop halfway through. Another example is getting out of bed in the morning on time. I just turn my alarm off to sleep for just 2 more minutes and fall back asleep for like a half hour and end up late for school. This will probably cause trouble for a long time and I need to not procrastinate and just do what needs to be done. Like the quote says, it takes a long time to learn and apply it all the way.

this quote is talking about how you work for things. when you start something you should finish it all the way. don't just do a half job to get it over with. put some respect into the things you accomplish. also don't procrastinate because it puts you farther behind. if you try your best at everything you do you are bound to get somewhere in life. you can only reach your goals if you stretch a little.

I think that this quote is saying that the most important lesson you can take away from all of your education is being able to get something done. For example, it doesnt matter if you know the material, but it only counts if you can do the homework and pass the tests. In the end, the only thing that counts is what you are able to "do." At the end of the quote it states "and however early a man's training begins, it is probably the last lesson that he learns thoroughly." I think this means that at first, you won't be to thorough at getting things done, but as time passes you will get better because you realize it is the only way you can succeed.
I find this to be very true, even though I wish it wasn't. I think this is the reason that many people don't succeed in life. I think that there are alot of smart and intelligent people in the world but they just dont show it because they don't applu themselves.

Everyone is responsible for their own work, and this is a lesson that should be developed by a student first. This kind of remindes me of a teacher giving you a due date for a big project. It is up to you to make yourself focus on the project and do your best. This lesson should be the first one learned because to many students don't think that school matters, and they never were pushed to do their work. This is the last lesson learned thoroughly because once kids are out of high school they then relize that they havn't been working, and the only way to survive is to get work done and work hard. I agree that this is the most important lesson, because if you don't get tasks done you won't be successful. I think that im really good at finishing tasks because i really take my work to heart and finish what i start.

Education teaches you to be responsible and do what you have to do in order to get the highest possible recognition of solid work. It really is the first lesson to be taught because the sooner you get it in your students heads that they have to get something done. Most of the time it really is the last idea fully understanded. People make mistakes along the way but those mistakes make a person smarter than a person who has never screwed up in their lives. Screwing up is the best way to learn because your more cognizant of the work you're doing next time. Hey mr. kay check that out i used a vocab word. Haha. Anyways, whether you like it or not you have to do the compulsory standards given to you because that's the only way to deal with the a-holes you will have to work for when you grow up. Pardon my french. Even if you have every question done on a worksheet right, if it's not done on time, it's not acceptable because in most circumstances that writing on the worksheet did not come from that person's thought process.

vocab will be after my first post.
i had a great idea of how to respond to this tonight:

"Perhaps the most valuable result of all education is the ability to make yourself do the thing you have to do." I know for a fact that my education for me is good, and that it is a life skill. i am glad i have a free education. I am glad that i, most of the time, do not take advantage of it. and the great thing is, is that, when we are out of high school, we will be able to spit out all this stuff we learned, as if we heard it yesterday. all because we were there to hear it.

"when it ought to be done." There does come a time and a place, where your knowledge will be put to use, wether in school or not. for many of us, it will be for attaining that job, for others, it will be living on the streets, and for some, it could be the skills to save your life.

"whether you like it or not." wether we like it or not, we have to learn, because no parent in their right mind would let their child ditch school cause they do not want to do it. you do this to become a member of society, and it is compulsory. do not try to escape it.

"it is the first lesson that ought to be learned." in my metaphor i just thought of, you have to learn the alphabet before you can read, just like education, you have to learn first how to implement what is next to come in the learning process

"and however early a man's training begins." you are not really thinking about it, but you are learning from the second you are born to the second you die, you are constantly taking in new information.*

"it is probably the last lesson that he learns thoroughly." the last second you live, and as your photo optimized life ends, you learn so much in so little time, as your life flashes before your eyes. some how, your body knows when your kicking the bucket, and puts your life in front of you, for one last glance and the best of the worst. of the good and bad, for those euphoric moments, and those where suicide could have been a choice.

*my new quote, which has a great likelihood of being true.

"in todays times, we may have exabytes of data storage available, but it can never hold as much as the cumulative of the human race, for never will computers be matched to humans, not in my lifetime at least. I hope..."

Mr.kay,
The first thing we learn should be that if something has to be done then we just have to deal and keep going. I think that Huxley is trying to say that We don't figure out how to do whats needed until were done learning. To me this also means that if we want something in life we have to get it ourselves. For example when we are little and our parents tend to buy us anything we want. As we get older our parents make us work for the things we want more and more. Like Using our own money to do something. As we get older and learn more we then begin relizing that in life we need to get things for ourselves instead of relying on others.

I think this quote means that the most best and rememberable lessons learned. When we teach ourself the lesson is learned. When not tough the less is not learned of easly forgoten. When we dont learn our lesson we make mistakes in the future and then after making mistakes then it is finaly learned and hopefuly remembered.
