I think that this means everyone is given a certain amount of freedom but you have to choose what to do with it. Also to keep that freedom you cannot abuse it. I think Chris however did abuse his freedom. He thought he could literally do whatever he wanted. Because he abused this power I do think it help lead up to his death. He just did not know his limits of freedom. Also when he just drove into the park and got his car stuck, he didn't know his limits. He ended up without a car and having to foot his way through the end of the journey. So i think as far as freedom go you have to have certain limits, if you abuse them you will have consequences.

To me this quote means a few things. To be able to have freedom, you have to work for it. Nothing is free in this world, even freedom. Like Chris, he had to work for his freedom from society. Getting jobs to pay for food and such. He had to hard to be able not to be found by his parents. That is what this quote means to me.

Mr. Kay,
Everyone is essentially given freedom. It is until you overuse the freedom that comes the consequences. For instance, if your mom says that you can take the car out but then you crash it. She will probably take that freedom of driving away. Chris took his freedom to an extreme. He knew that nobody could stop him from running away. His consequence was essentially dying because he abused his freedom. He didnt know the limits of his freedom.

The quote "freedom is a package deal- with it comes responsilites and consquences" means to me if you want one you hve to have the other. With one comes the other and either you get both or none of these things. Responsibilties and consequnences form our freedom and without hem it would not be freedom. This falls under the idea of transcendentalism beacasuse to have a safe country you must have something happen to you if you do wroung. For example we have the freedom to vote but for that freedom to work we have the responsibilite to go and vote. Chris went to far and his behaviors got him the consequence of death. He lived a free life without reponsibilitie and he ended dieing.

vocab will be for later.

quite right, as i look upon the quote, because almost all freedom has its consequences, so that i can be the most free place it can be. because i know that for a fact, nothing has never, and will never exist for a long enough time, without rules put their, so that people can not go on murderous rampages. its just impossible, because there is no structure, and you know what happens to a house that is not planned right, with the wrong foundation, or structure? it fails, and falls to the ground. it simply cant exist for that fact alone; but others do contribute. and your responsibilities are not even that hard to maintain either. just put some clothes on, and do not say dirty things. thats in simplicity, the just of what normal people would be conflicted upon. you also take your responsibilities as a person in a free nation, and exploit them to there advantage.

so just as this election happened, we will take on new responsibilities as free, err, almost-free-americans. with that note, i do congratulate the newly elected president, BARACK OBAMA.

I WISH SOME PEOPLE IN CLASS WOULD STOP BEING SO RACIST TOWARDS HIM. IM NOT GOING TO EVEN POINT NAMES, CAUSE YOU KNOW.

BARACK OBAMA, 2008-2012, ROCK ON!

Freedom is not only a gift it is something you have have to work at to keep. Like when you get something, you have to keep it in shape to have it. You have to take care of yourself and follow a few rules even when you get freedom. Sometimes when you look at yourself as a transcndentalist, the consequences that come with manipulating your freedom don't apply to you. In some cases of fame that's true, but otherwise you have to follow rules and consider the consequences that come along with liberty. Chris thought that he was a human being not affected by materials. So having that independence from man-made things made him feel he didn't need tools or help from people. Chris went by this rule of living life where you want for however long you want and not having to tell anyone about it. When he died he went out the same way, he never set up a fire signal died a happy man because he survived in the wild for so long without much more than I have to bring to Literature class.

I think that this quaite meens that when you have freedom be responsible about wut you do with that freedom. If your not repsonsible with wut freedom you are given then most of the time there witll be consequences. This falls under the idea of transcendentalism because you are being an indiviidual. For example chris went out in the wild wqith his freedom and was not responsible. In the end he had some consequences. He dies because ha didnt have everything he needed. He was not responsible with his freedom.

I think this means you cant have freedom without responsibilities and consequences. This is transcendental by, if your going against the majority, you could get made fun of although you have to be responsible for your actions. For example if you decide to dye your hair bright pink, your probably gonna get made fun of, but you have to own up to your decision of dying your hair. I think chris used his freedom every chance he could. He was always on the move but he suffered the consequence of dieing because he took his freedom for granite. He wanted to live in the wild because it was his choice and his freedom, although he didnt take the responsibility of being prepared for the trip, which got him killed. I think freedom is sometimes taken too far with people. They feel that they can do whatever they want without having consequences.

I think this quote means that if you want freedom yo have to accept the responsibilities that come with it. If you chose to be free or to be an idividualist to have to know and accept things positive or negative. You have to work for the things you want. Chris/ alex chose to be free he chose to be free from socitey so he had to to work hard to get where he got.
If you chose to be free or freedom from something you have to handle everything on your own. All the
consequences that come along with it you have to work through them and move on. So The quote means if you want freedom you must first be responsible to get it.

This quote means that once you get freedom , you have responsibilities to keep that freedom. But , if you aren't responsible then you will have consequences. Chris took his freedom to the extreame , many people don't go as far as Chris did. Chris knew he had freedom and he knew he could run away with out getting caught while doing it. His parents didn't seem to strict , they worked a lot so i am guessing chris had a lot of time on his own. But he misused that freedom and ran away. And little did he know his concequence would be dying.

With freedom comes with responsibilities and consequences. When you have freedom, there is no one else to blame your faults on. It's your choice, its your responsibility to choose right. If you don't you will have to deal with the consequences. Chris lived freely and he suffered the greatest consequence. He did not carry out his responsibility to have all the materials he needed. Chris suffered the the consequence of death because he was unprepared.

To me this quote means when earn freedom, you also have more responsibilities that come with the freedom. When you do not follow those responsibilities, there are consequences. This idea is transcendental because with freedom you have room to grow into your own person and do what you want to do. Chris showed this quote in Into the Wild when he went out into the wild. He had almost all the freedom in the world in Alaska, but also many responsibilities. He had to shelter, feed, and protect himself from the cold and wildlife. If he did not follow up on these responsibilities there were grave consequences. It could lead to illness, wounds, and after a period of time, death. This is exactly what happened to Chris. He did not take the initiative to find out how to catch the proper amount of food. This lead to his death. He was so caught up on the idea of having so much freedom that he forgot about the multiple responsibilities he had.

William Schwartz said...

Freedom is a great thing, however it comes at a price. Not everything about freedom is a good thing. Sometimes being free isn't the best thing. People will always need some form of help no matter what. This is a consequence along with not conforming to another group. People may look at you and judge you poorly, or very nicely. The respnsibilites that come with freedom are not always nice either. To keep the freedom that you have you must be able to maintain it. You are responible for your own life. If it's your freedom, somebody else isn't going to help you. This idea applies to transcendentalism because transcendentalism is about being free or working toward freedom. Transcendentalists such as Chris have responsibilities to keep. Although Chris was free he still had to live. He needed things with him. Without his transportation, he would have gotten no where. The consequences he payed proved to be fatal. He ended up dying because nobody knew where he was at and he was in the middle of a strange area.

I think this means that you must depend on yourself instead of government because you are free. You have to make your own way. There is no way to blame your failures on someone because it is all in your control. Then sometimes people take freedom and cheat it, ruining the freedom for others. In the means of transcendentalism is that people gain their own belief on what you must do to be truly free or how to use your freedom. Such as with Chris how he believed that you should live off the land to be free. He took his freedom to an extreme and then misjudged the land.

I believe this quote means that when you get freedom you have to take responsibility for your actions. If not there will be consequences. One thing my parents have always taught me is to take responsibility for my actions. Freedom is a privilege, so take little steps with it not a mile. When Chris was given the power of freedom he took it to the max. Which in his case ended up not so good, but that's the way he wanted things done. All his long journey he accomplished many things, and it was his freedom that gave him the courage to step forward. To take a chance. Like in the story were reading in class this man created a story about making a potion of youth. You usually only get to live your youth once to make the most of it. That's exactly what Chris did with his freedom, and the consequence was dying in the end.

Freedom really is a package deal. I think that this quote means that with a great amount of freedom comes a great amount of responsibility. Freedom is a package deal in a such where their are many things under the word freedom. you might need to ask your self, "The freedom of what?"
Well, to different people this my mean many different things. personal i think that freedom is to have the right to make your own decisions and not be vigorously controlled by some one or something. This leads to the whole transcendentalism part. The concept of freedom was a large influence on Chris. He had the freedom because he was over the age of 18 to go and explore what ever he wanted. He went out on his own to find his goals. To go find the Alaskan wilderness. Some times freedom can become dangerous as we could read in the book that Chris ended up dieing at freedoms foot.

I think that this means that everyone is given the opportunity of freedom, but how you use it determines the consequences. Abusing your freedom can result with unwanted consequences. I think Chris abused his freedom a lot. His abuse of freedom is essentially what lead to his death. I think that Chris didn't know the boundary between freedom and carelessness/indiscretion. He thought he could do whatever without any problems. For example, Chris knew that no one could stop him from running away. He abused his freedom by becoming careless which led to his death. If your parents say that you can have friends over but no partying and then they come home and theres a party going on, your parents will take away the freedom of letting you have friends over. This is just my point of view on how Chris abused his freedom.

Mr Kay,
To me, this means exactly what is says, to have freedom, there will be things you need to take care of and bad things you can't always control. For instance, if I was free from my parents and moved out, then I wouldn't have all the benefits of living with them like free meals and help with anything, while having new responsibilities like doing dishes, and tons of other things I take for granted. It falls under the idea of transcendentalism because the majority, if not all, transcendentalists want to be independent or free of something, so they all suffer consequences and new responsibilities. Chris went through this exact thing in his journey. He got new responsibilities such as getting food( in the woods especially) and getting transportation. There were also consequences like no money(that's the way he wanted it so I don't know if its a consequence) no real home, and not many tools to get the things he needs. I don't know if it is because of Chris not being able to handle responsibilities or not dealing with consequences. Either way his freedom cost him his life due to him either not having the right tools(consequence) or him not being able to get proper food(responsibility).

What I think this means is that you have the freedom of doing what you want to do but you have to be careful of what you do with it. Also, I think this means if you break a rule or something you get a privillage taken away. I think Chris abused his freedom because there was nobody to tell him what to do. So he thought he could go or do what ever he wanted to do. Also, he had friends and family who wanted to come with him but he just push them away. Chris had options he just chose the wrong ones. This is what the quote means to me.

The peole who break the line of freedom and suffer the consequences. They will be influenced by the law and what will happen to them for breaking the laws and pushing the limits of freedom

Now this I have read/seen before. Marvel? DC? (I'm listing comic companies if you don't understand). Spider-man it was, "with great power comes great responsibility." It's generally the same. The power of freedom is a great and powerful sense. We are able to do many things; plan, wing it, and even be it possible both( I think I may have done this). Chris/Alex expressed his freedoms in great variety. But I do think he could have been much more prepared. He was SWAYED to take tool, clothing and food when he was hitchhiking in the first chapter. He even might of died right then and there...wow, I used a comic reference to connect...

I think that with freedom comes error. Everyone is given freedom in the U.S. I think that with freedom you make make some mistakes. With these mistakes, comes consequences. You may be abusing or overusing your freedom. In a transcendaentalist mind, people may make the wrong coiice pon something that they think is right but is really not. Secondly, sometimes responsibility is a factor to freedom. You make need to restrict and keep an eye on your freedoms, they may get out of hand. This eventually leadong to comsequences.

Once you choose to take on some freedom you will have to take on some responsibilites. And with those responsibilities you will have consquences. All this stuff is all kind of linked together in a chain. Once you take on freedom you have responsibilities and with responsibilities you have consquences. This relates to Chris in the same sequence. Chris choose to use his freedom and go on a trip and he had responsibilities. His responsibilities were to live and find food and to hitchhike. With his responsibilities was his consequence, death.

I think freedom comes as a package. To earn freedom you must do things. For example armed forces, jobs etc. With freedom you get transcendentalism. Being free you can choose pretty much anything you want or believe. If you want to be a doctor you can go to school and get a degree for it. Chris had to work forhis freedom. He went to school but never finished, Worked for some money and in the long run lived how he wanted.

To me, this quote means that everyone gets freedom, but with that freedom, you have to have responsibilities or you will have to face consequences for your actions. This quote is trancendental because trancendentalism is being an individual. And having freedom is pretty much saying you can be an individual. This statement reminds me of Chris's behavior because Chris kind of abused his freedom, and then in the end he had to face the consequence of death. He abused his freedom because he thought he could live in the wild by himself with nothing to provide him. When really, that wasnt being realistic, and abusing the freedom that he got. So, in the end Chris had to face the conseqence of dying.

Unknown said...

I think this is saying mulyiple things. First of all, i think it is saying that to have complete freedom you have to do some things. This includes other things like being a good person, doing what is told which i guess are responsibilities. Also, it means if you want to have freedom there are going to be things that are in your way but you have to not worry about them. Plus when something bad happens fight against it and good will hopefully come. this is like transcendentalism because you have to be responsible and be an individual. this affected chris because he wasn't always responsible and died because of it i think.

To me it means you are free to do what you want but still have to go by the rules. Some responsibilities would be to get an education, votegot to college, etc.
The consequences are the you may not be able to be successfull and survive without rules. It falls into transendental because being free could mean free from government or free from a country. It effected chris cuz it he lived as a bub basiclly with no rules and he died becasue of it.

This quote is saying that when you are given freedom, dont abuse it. Some people think that being free means that you can do whatever you want. This is true, but we all have limits to being free that the government has put on us to make the world a better place. Chris on the other hand took advantage of his freedom. He disrespected and neglected the government by not following the laws given to him. This quote is also saying that freedom is not given to. It is provided to youy so that you can live your life in the way you want. Nowadays complain about how the government doesnt do enough in this world, but then we complain when they do do something to help us. If the government was involved in everything than we wouldnt have freedom and the US would be a communist country rather than a democracy.

This quote is definalely true. This si because in order to achieve freedom you must be willing to take on certain responsibilities. However, with these responsibilities comes consequences. So, you must be able to take on anything that gets in your way and keep going no matter what happens. You also must be willing to work hard to get freedom. Transcendentalists must go by all these principles layed out. They are the one who want freedom, after all, aren't they? Chris is a good example of this because he lived by these principles his whole life, even until he died.

Like his whole journey, it was not planned to well, he did bring the materials that he would need to survive. He just thought he could live how ever he wanted, ehhh he new he wasnt going to live forever, but the main consequence of his selfless act was death. He was so unprepared for it all, if it was well thought about this wouldnt of happened and all of these wouldnt of been abused.

My thoughts are that. while everyone has freedom, they are not immune to the consequences of unlawful actions. While there may many pleasures and joys that come with freedom, there can be just as many faults. I believe this relates to Chris because, while he was expressing his freedom, he was not careful enough to properly avoid any consequences or mistakes that could have greatly harmed him. Freedom can only go so far; Abuse it, and youll find yourself in a bad situation.

Mr.Kay,
This quote means a couple of things to me. When we are given freedom it means that we have the oppurtunity to do as we please(within reason). We make our own choices and do things how we want them to be done. When we choose our own actions we underatnd that if that wasnt the right approach at the matter that we deal with the consequences. For example, voting for our president. When we turn 18 we are given the freedom to choose who we want in office. We listen to both people talk and choose out of the two. Later on though, sometimes we start to not like how the president is going after things, even thought we choose him/her to approach it that way. If that made any sense. This falls into the idea of transendentalism because we choose to do things how we want them done.

I think that it means that you can’t have anything without a consequence. Freedom isn’t free. You pay for it with work or preparation. You don’t walk into a situation and say, “Here world, here I am, do with me what you will.” Transcendentalism being one with nature. You become a part of the ecosystem. You adapt to the envirment to survive. Chris chose only to adapt on his terms not those of the enviroment. This is why he died. He did not take responsibility by looking a head and assuring he would survive. He relied on nature and others people to take care of him. Instead of taking care of himself.

But if you make the wrong choice then you need to face the conquences. It can go vice versa. If you make the right choice. Then you will have all the responcibilites. Which could really suck. To me this quote could mean a few different things. It might be saying that If you are going to have freedom, you need to be responsible for your actions. It could be saying that if you have freedom, but make the wrong decisions, then karma will come back after you to get pay back hahah. And if you do something good, karma will come back to you in a good way. It could also be saying not to abuse your freedom. Chris thought he could just do whatever he felt like and look where that brought him, he died. So be careful what you do with the power of your freedom is my final estimate on what this quote could mean.

It falls into the idea of transcendentalism becuase you have a choice of what your responsibilities are but not of the consequences. It effected chris becuase he held him self to certain values. He also had his freedom but he wouldnt put those values aside for it. Like he read by the book and still died becuase he was headstrong and went out unprepaired. I feel this quote means all things you do you have to take care of it. also everything given is a type of freedom you get with it. i feel Chris really didn't like the thought of his type of freedom given to him. he really wanted to just do whatever he wanted in life disregarding the rules. when he got his car stuck in the desert he gave no responsibility to it and left it in the desert. thus leaving him to hitchhike his way to places. that what i feel this quote means.

This phrase i find to be very interesting and truthful at the same time. To me this phrase means that you are given a life and freedom and from there you are going to have to put in your effort torward responibility of acts. Along with this freedom given there will also be many consequences thrown at you and you must be able to jugle and deal with all of these with your first job of responsibily. I also feel as if this freedom is a gift and is given to you as an individual and needs to be handled correctly underneath some-what of the transcendentalist concept or idea. Such as Chris's behavior throughout into the wild. He is handed in life freedom and he chooses to live with it being very individualisticly. Now with this given to him and his decisions throughout his life he must maintain this freedom with a sense of responsibility and knowing that life will not be entirely smooth and that he will have to deal with occasional consequences.

Freedom is a package deal means that you can get both good things and bad things with it. People want freedom but sometimes aren't willing to accept the consequences of it. This applies to transcendetalism because they want freedom and they find their own way to get it. But with that freedom comes responsibility. They have to be able to make safe choices and when they don't, they need to own up to it and take responsibility. Chris is an example because he had the freedom to go off into the wild but then he took the freedom to an extreme and wasn't prepared. The consequence of his actions was that he died.

What this quote means to me is that if you want freedom your going to need to be responsible and deal with the consequences. I think that if you want freedom then you have to work for, it's not just gonna come to you. This falls into the idea of trancendentalism because i think to be an individual you have to do things yourself and people arn't always just gonna give you freedom. Although this could be the opposite of transcendentalism because the soldiers all fought for our freedom and we didn't have to work for it at all. The concept of freedom appled to chris's behavior because he was all about freedom, he wanted to be free from the society. Chris had to be responsible as well with everything he did. If he wouldn't have acted responsibly he would have probably died a lot sooner. He also had to deal with consequences because he had to learn to survive and deal with his problems.

I think this means that every is given a certain amount of responsibilites and freedom. You shouldnt abuse your freedom and the responibiltes. Freedom is something giving to you for doing good things and being on a good behavior. You have to work for what you want. I think chris/alex over used his freedom. Chris/ alex chose to be free from socitey. He had to to work hard to get where he got. Freedom isnt somehting that is just handed to you, you have to do good things to earn it.

“Freedom is a package deal - with it comes responsibilities and consequences”

I believe that it means that you can't take things for granted. Freedom is like a commercial: You have to read the details inside the small text. You can't just assume that it's 'free'. Because there are things you have to do to earn it.

I think this quote is like that one in Spiderman: "With great power comes great responsibility." Or, uh, that one from Team America.

"Freedom isn't free
It costs folks like you and me
And if we don't all chip in
We'll never pay that bill
Freedom isn't free
No, there's a hefty in' fee.
And if you don't throw in your buck 'o five
Who will?"

(Those lyrics took forever to find!! D: )

anyway, I think there is a bright way to look at the quote by thinking "Life has it's ups and downs, i should prolly(probably) get used to it by now." Well, that's what I think about it.

I believe this quote to be very true. I think it is saying with freedom comes responsibility and that you must be responsible for the consequences of your actions. I think another word that would tie in with this statement is trust. At least for children under 18 who have to earn trust to gain freedom. I believe that Chris abused his freedom and did know when to stop. And this is why he is transcendental because he goes further than an average person would go. I do believe his stubbornness and knowing his limits could have played a factor in his death.

This means it's everyones right to have freedom, you just have to do good with it. You can't do WHATEVER you want, and expect everything to be ok. You have limits to your freedom and you have to take on responibilty. Chris expressed his freedom, but also took advantage of it too. I think he didnt know the limit and it caused his death. It was too much freedom for him to take on. If he would have known how to use his freedom to his true advantage, he would of made it out alive.

I think that this means everyone is given a certain amount of freedom but you have to choose what to do with it. Once you have it though, you shouldn't abuse it. I think Chris ind of took advantage of this. he thought he could do what he wanted. He didn't follow the rules or laws. He did what he wanted to, not what someone told him to do. He could have had everything handed to him. But instead he chose to live his own way, and not take in anything from anyone. He liked working for his money. You should give Freedom limitations.

Freedom is a great thing. But freedom coes with resonsablity and conssequences. You have to beable to handle freedom. You can't miss use it or take it for granted. There is a border line to freedom. You can't go around killing people because that would just be wrong. You can't break the laws because that would be pushing the limits if freedom. The peole who break the line of freedom and suffer the consequences. They will be influenced by the law and what will happen to them for breaking the laws and pushing the limits of freedom

With Great freedom, comes great responsibilities, great responsibilities, somes with great consequences.

I think this means that no matter what you have to be responsibel . Once you begen to loose your responsibilities you begen to view the consequences. Seeing the consequences can also be a good thing to help you move forward to begin seeing your esponsibilities. I think Chris abuse his freedom because he thought he could do whatever he wanted. I think chris just did not know his limits of his freedom. I think he didnt know when to stop.

I think that this quote means that freeedom is given to you, but that with it you have to deal with responsibilities and consequences. You must choose what to do with your freedom. These choices are the responsibility aspect of freedom. If you choose something negative to do with your freedom, you must deal with the consequences. I think that Chris believed to a certain extent that having freedom meant that he would have no consequences. As we find out in "Inot the Wild", his consequence is the ultimate consequence a person can pay, death. If he had thought through his choices more seriously instead of doing things spontaneously, he may have had a better outcome. Therefore, I believe that Chris's life is a great example of this quote.
