Hope you were able to begin and understand the movie. Even in the beginning, it is evident that there is a friction between the ideals of an individualist (Robin Williams character) and the "societal" beliefs of the establishment.

I think this quote is very true. We are all dissenters at least one point in our lives. There are even dissenters at our school (yes this includes you mr.kay) =). But there are many people like that. I have many friends that are dissenters. My family consists entirely of dissenters. Dissenters are everywhere, not everybody is a dissenter, but there are a lot.

I think this quote is true. There are alot of dissenters in our world. Even our selves at some point, if not already will be adissenter. Peopole in my family are dissenters. Most people in our society are also dissenters, everyone has their own oppinions.Sometimes they are simmilar to others , but other times they have very different oppinions. NOt everyone is a dissenter but probably most of them are.

I guess this is true for most people. However, some people never think at all for themselves. They feel it's easier to just go with the flow and be led. An example is the Holocaust. Some in Hitler's army must have known it was wrong. However, very few actually did anything about it. So this does apply to those whom break away, even for a moment. I know a lot of them, whether it's your group of friends, family, or church, they are dissenters.

This quote is true because at one point in everybody's life we all start to think for ourselves. It began to happen for me about last year. When i told my mom to shut up. I knew it was the wrong thing to do. But, i felt that it was right to me. For most of our lives we think what others want us to think. I think that, that is what is wrong with our society today. I think that every teenager has the right to think for themselves. THats why i like your class. I get to have a mind of my own for once in my life.

This phrase is true for everyone at one time or another. We all have to make our own decisions at one point in our life and we have say what we think. The earlier we start the easier it will be to do throughout life. One day no one will be there to think for us, " he resigns momentarily from the herd and thinks for himself." Thinking for oneself is part of what a dissenter does. You do say what you think and you do what you say. Those moments in your life when you have to think for yourself could start a road of individualism for a person.

Mr. Kay,
At one point, whether its momentarily or permanent, all of us are dissenters. It could be us kids standing up for ourselves by saying no to drugs. It could also be adults, finnaly deceiding to quit that job that they hate getting up for day after day. The point is nobody likes a yes man. What i mean by this is someone who agrees with whatever someone says just to please them. Everyone has to stand up for what they beleive in. I know a lot of dissenters such as friends, family, or even poeple you overhear talking.

when i looked up dissenter it said it was like when you leave a church or segregate from something. so i think the main idea of this quote would be thinking outside the box. like in the movie today when robin williams tells the kids to rip those pages out of thier books. their unsure of it at first becuase their so used to just going by the rules. even the other professor said his method was unorthodox. but what says the kids couldn't do that. its just thinking a differnt way.

Had to look up the word, but now it makes more sence. This quote is not your average quote it goes deep and can be interipited many ways. How i interipit the quote is that everyone is a dissenter some point in your life. When you stop to think before doing or just following the crowd or group. Weather you say or do something is somehing eles but if you think differntly than you are a dissenter. You should think for yourself not what people think is right for you. Do what you think is right no matter if its your best freind.

This quote is very true. Their are many times when someone breaks off, or disrupts the trend to do their own thing. I believe when the dissenter is brought from a human, its when they are scared, or courageous. The dissenter could be scared when his/her friends are doing something illegal, their not sure if they should do it. A courageous dissenter could be when someone steps up from the crowd and impacts the world. When you become a dissenter, your decsions are based off your own. Your choices are not made from someone else, its just themselevs making a difference.

I like this quote. I think it expresses how you can be a conformist and still yourself. It expresses how most people live the same lives as the majority of society. That most people follow the precedents that were set before us, but we have the ability to change them. That following the crowd isn't a bad thing, it's just something that already been done, and known to work. and seceding from the crowd, you are giving the opportunity to try something new, or contribute in a different way. Its like transcendentalism, they once followed the crowd and realized it wasn't working for them. So they changed it, in that moment they resigned from the herd, thankfully.
I think this quote is true. We are all dissenters at one point or another. No one likes to follow what other people do. This is why they make up their own rules. My family consists of nothing but dissenters. Its funny how rebellious we are.

I think that this quote is very true. I think that everyone dessents at least once in their life. There are many ways a person may dissend. It may just be disagree with your parents or pears about a certain subject. I know that I have disagreed with my parents many time. I once argued about who I was hangin out with and argued that they were goood people and wouldnt do anything bad. (Of course they never did :)) But its little things like that that are examples of a dissenter.

This is a great example of trancidentalism. This qoute shows at least one thing to the naked eye and many other things if you look close enough. One is that this is a individaulist writing. It means that any person can follow his own path when an individaulist. I am not talking about things against the law. Perhaps noble things though.

This quote is true.I think that because everyone has there own opinion. Like when you are with friends and they want to do something that you know is wrong then just walk away or speak up and tell them that you think this is wrong and I am leaving. There are alot of dissenters everywhere we go like school, malls, and at are homes. At school people give there own opinions about school work or the people who they want to hang out with. Also, I think when your at home your family wants to do different things that you don't want to do. I think the whole world is full of dissenters.

I think that this quote is very true. All people are dissenters at least once in their life. Dissenters are everywhere in our world. But at times people tend to go along with the crowd more than being a dissenter. Whether it be going along with the fashion trend, or peer pressure. But being a dissenter can really make you go furhter in life, because you make your own decisions or opinions based on what you feel is the right thing to do. Rather than just doing what other people want you to do.

I find this quote to be very true. It means that at times, may it be periodically or consistently, a person steps out of the group and speaks for him or herself. I also think this quote is true for everyone. There has or will be times where you will step out of the "herd" and be your own person. You will not always agree with everything that the group is doing and you are going to state your opinion on it. We are not cows in a herd, we have minds of our own and no one is going to be a follower every moment of their life. Having a mind of your own is a positive thing. You shouldn't go around following the crowd just because everyone else is. Thinking for yourself makes you independent and your own person. The only time having a mind of your own can be a negative thing is when it gets out of hand. Besides this, thinking for yourself makes you in control of your life, which is how it should be.
Mr. Kay
In my opinion this qoute is true. Everybody has there own opinion and sometimes does what they want to. We are all indiniduals and have our own thoughts and opinions and should stick to this. Although most of us don't always tend to follow what we believe in and instead follow others. I think this quote means that we should think for themself and do what they want to do. But it is also ok to follow others at times.

For the most part people think for themselves. At times their are people you have trouble with that. For example some of my friends whenever they have a issue with someone they like to talk about it. Instead of taking the matter in their own hands and doing what is best for themselves and others, he/she always ask what they should do. You can't tell a person what to do, you can give them your opinion but that's all. The rest is up to them. So I agree with this quote. There's not always going to be someone telling you everything, you have to step out of the box and think for yourself.

I believe that everyone is this person at one point or another in their life. Everyone has that killer instinct. Nobody wants to get caught and get in trouble. People always look out for themselves because it is programmed in their minds that their life is more important than anybody elses. There are only a select few people who you see put other people's lives ahead of their own in the face of real danger. Most people will follow the group blindly into everything. However once they start to feel that something is wrong they will pull back. People are smarter than they appear.
Taylor Dieck
The dissenter is someone who pulls away from the beliefs of other people, and thinks for himself. I like that quote because sometimes we get swept up in our own lifes we forget to think for our selves. We just follow what everyone else is thinking because it's what is easy. People at church get so involved because they interpret everything the bible offers, as however they were taught. When the bible has many different meanings. People need to think for themselves and stop just getting by in life. Because actually when you think for yourself, life gets a whole lot easier. I think this is a good quote to grow with. To accomplish and work towards the point of the poem.
I think this quote is completely true and i like the quote. I think that this qoute is saying you can be part of a group but will break away when needed. Also, this is saying that you have a mind of your own and that it usually is a good thing. Another thing is when in dought go with what you believe in it usually is the best. Plus, f you are in a situation that isn't good don't follow another. Just go with yourself and be a leader

We are all dissenters no matter what we think. At some point some where even if we don't realize it. We all pull away from something or refuse to go along with the crowd it all depends on how you do it. Sometimes you will go along with other peoples ideas just because it is the easy way out. Personally I find myself in this situation with my parents and other people at school. Being a dissenter is just a way of life. Robin Williams was being a strong dissenter when he told the students to rip out the entire prologue of the poetry book. Being a dissenter is not necessarily a bad thing, it just means you are actually using your brain.

I find this quote very understandable. I believe this because i know ive been through parts in life where i needed to break off from the pack. Moments were i felt uncomfterble. Or when something that was taking place was not the right thing. This may not just only mean feeling uncomfterble about something. It could follow something along the lines of just not wanting to roll with a certain fad or group anymore. Maybe you want to find or start a new group.

This quote is very true. There is many dissenter in our world today. Even everyone of us is one at some points in our lifes. We all have our different point of views. No one likes to always agree with everything people say. We all stand up for our selfs as individuals. We all think of our selfs at one point and what we think is right.
Mr. Kay,
I think that this quote is very true. Every one of us are dissenters at least one in our lives. I know that I am dieeenting when my parent sand I are talking about who I'm hanging out with and what we are going to do. I know that my parents are just trying to be protective, but sometimes I need my own space, now don't get me wrong, but teen's aspecialy need there own space. I think that when most people dissent, s when there are teens. I was watch CSI: Las Vegas one time, and the mom was going through the teen daugthers room, and she found the daughters diary and started reading it. I remember dissenting with my parents about that. Teen's should be able to at least keep a diary to themselves without their parents going through it no offence Mr. Kay :).

i think that many people are dissenters, but others are not. even i am a dissenter in some points of my life. a majority of the people in our society are dissenters. look at the middle east to us the are dissenters. a lot of the people that run our country are dissenters. these kind of people are the other half of the people that make this society go around. this is what the whole world is made up of.
A dissenter is a person who breaks away from the majority opinion. they are saying that a person that chooses to have their own opinion is taking a part in life. if i saw this word and didn't look it up i would think it had a different meaning. when i look at it, dissenter makes me think of descendant. a descendant is exactly the opposite because it is what has been passed on of the same. i thought that was interesting that two similar looking words mean totally two totally different things.
The dissenter (look up this word if you do not know what it means) is every human being at those moments of his life when he resigns momentarily from the herd and thinks for himself.
Dissenter-Noun-a person who dissents, as from an established church, political party, or majority opinion.
I believe that this quote is all the way true. Most of us are dissenters at one point in our life, such as YOU mr.kay. I think that everyone is a dissenter, or maybe a dissenter set a trend, so many followed, then off that trend someone changed, and people followed. This is a never ending pattern of dissenters. Some people, hate thinking for theirself, i personally think their missing out, i like when people start to follow me. Although it sometimes gets annoying, my momma says that its a form of flattery. All together, we all have a little bit of dissenter in us somewhere.

This quote can very well be true to all people. I think that everybody has been in this position at least one time in their life, I know I have. Sometimes you have to choose to be a dissenter because that is just the right thing to do in that situatiuon. You may thing that whatever your friends are doing is the wrong thing to be doing and so you think differently about that. You may also not agree with your parents half the time they argue with you. You usually dont agree with them so that would kind of make you a dissenter. My point is that there are many situations in which you may become a dissenter.

Dissenter:(noun) A person who differs in sentiment or opinion, especially from the majority.
I think everyone has that time in their lives where they feel the need to withdraw from the crowd and wonder about what they should do from then on. Where they think about why the world is as it is. And when it starts to become hard on them, they rejoin the group and learn more of the answers. Because there are things in life that aren't completely clear to us when we try to solve them ourselves. It takes another mind to decipher our larger problems.
We can't find the correct answer for every question thrown at us. We have to learn each answer one at a time.

I think that this quote is true because everyone is a dissenter sometimes. We don't all go along with the crowd 100 percent of the time. Everyone has had at least one moment of being a dissenter in their lives. I don't know anybody thats never gotten in an argument with their parents over dissenting views. A lot of people are dissenters more than just a few times though. Many of my friends don't just "resign momentarily from the herd" they live outside of it. This is why I believe this quote is true.
I believe everyone follows this quote at least once in there life. There are always times one most stray from the pack. For instance your friends are doing illegal activities should you join or should you get out of the herd. I think in this situation it would be appropriate to resign from the group for a while. Another great example that Kristen Pauly brought to my attention is Hitler's soldiers in the Holocaust. Some of the soldiers had to have known they were doing something wrong but were afraid to stand up against what they felt was right. Everyone knows dissenters, including myself they are friends, family and people thats you just overhear talking.

This quote is quite appeasing to me. It is very true in this, usually a dissenter should have a reason to break off. A person cannot break away for no apparent or good reason. For instance you cannot become a dissenter by simply not accepting laws of physics witch has already been proven. Varying types of people are needed to point out mistakes and problems that can only be spotted by a different perspectives.

Yeh:hard back
Bigbenny: Yeah hardbacks.
Me: but that doesn't explain-
Yeh: I swear if you had one gold for every physics glitch that Blizzard made, you would have your own flying mount!!
There are many instances where I find this qoute to be true. I think it strongly supports the idea of transcendentalism and therefore shows a relationship with our society today and society in the past. I think every so often, people break away from being a conformist and voice their individual thoughts. Whether it be saying no to peer pressure, or even speaking up on a political issue, it is necessary to ensure a just society. Dissenters are the ones that stand out in this world for their accomplishments. So, that being said, it is a good thing to be a dissenter at certain monents. You never know how much you can change a situation with a little, spontaneous rebellion.
I think it means that everyone makes their own choice in time. That they will move on from a group and choose whats in their best intrest. Which isnt a bad thing but it could be. Like a person could choose to go do drugs or steal something. Or he could choose not to and chose for himself instead of what someone told him to do. I think i have made this choice becuase I have deceided to apply myself this year instead of slack and do nothing. Which is something in my better intrest and positive.

I THINK THIS QUOTE IS VERY TRUE. Everyone in some point in our lives have dissentered from the pack and did our own thing. Mostly for me due to my a.d.d :(. I tend to block everything out and tend to walk away and do my own thing no matter what in doing."If you know what i mean Mr. Kay ;)." There are meany people whom are dissenters. I personaly thing im the only one in mf family thet is a dissenter. People could be talking to me and not even knowing it, and sometimes i walk away. Kinda like you Mr. Kay :D
I think that dissenters are the most important people in our society. I think this because the people that do what they want are the most interesting. Like Robin Williams in this movie, he had the students rip out the pages from the book. When the other teacher walked in he was freaking out. This teacher wasn't use to anything being different and to robin williams it was normal. This teacher also had that secret poem club which is the point of the movie. The people in this club would sneak out of the pretentious school and do what they loved, and that was reading poetry. So I think that the main point of this movie is to break from the pack and think what you want.
I think that this quote is saying that some times you think something that you should not. Like if your religion says you can't get married. Some people have thoughs breif moments that think hey what if i did that. Or if a parent says no you can't go to the movies. You probablly think what if i wen't even though my parent said not to. I htink this qoute means; it is ok to have a thought that may go against something you beleive in, because it is a thought nobody else knows about it.

Everyone is a dissenter in thier own way. This quote is saying that is true, and no matter what eventually you need to be yourself. People need to not be afraid to show her they are, they need to think for themselves. Some of the greatest people would have never been discovered if they kept thier thoughts or opinions to themselves. If you follow what other people do, or always agree you will never live to your potential. A dissenter is someone we should all try to strive to be, because that is what will make us who we truly are.

A dissenter is a person who differs in opinion, from the majority. This quote shows how people live their lives. People are dissenters all the time. I think that some people arent dissenters. In my life i have met many dissenters, and many are my freinds. I think somewhere in life, i couldd trnsform into being more of a dissenter. I believe that dissenters re a god way to mae our culture diverse.
I most definitely agree with Macleish's quote. Every person has been a dissenter at least once in their life. A dissenter goes against the established sytem or idea and chooses a different path or idea. Robin Williams character in the movie is a dissenter, because he goes against what has been established as the correct way to live. He thinks freely and makes choices not based on what the school values. Some people are dissenters more than others, like Robin William's character. No matter how often we go away from the crowd though, we all choose a different way once in a while. We were created with unique minds and unique characters, so we will not always just go with what every body else is doing. I also think being a dissenter is embracing this idea of transcendentalism. We have to think for ourselves. We cannot just go where the crowd takes us. We must guide our own lives by making our own decisions. I believe this is the point Macleish wants to make to us. He is saying we all can be dissenters, and that is a good thing. We have just have to think beyond what the world and society are saying and choose our life for ourselves.

I agree with this quote a considerable amount. I also believe that this quote applies to most of the population of the world, and unfortunately, i think the majority of these people who haven't done that, run our country, and that lead many and all other countries. I believe that even if they have been these people, i believe they haven't had many go against the crowd, except, where i have heard proof, which is Barack Obama. I'm a freaking democrat, and get over it; anyways, i have heard that he has public said no to things that he knew would hurt the middle and low class. and I think its great that we have people on this earth who are rich, but like to help the poor. now that i think about it, us democrats are like robin hood, trying to equalize everyone out. and although i respect few republicans and their idea, i also believe you should judge someone based on that.

Mr Kay,
I think this quote is super duper true. It is eassentially saying that if you are different, then you are pretty much a leader. If you stop doing something in a certain way and so it you own way, then are then leader of that way you did that one thing. The dissenters are essentially noncomformists, not just to not conform, but to be opinionated and to be true. Dissenters dont neccassarily need to be differnt in a big way. It could just be how you better your self in school and be differnte from everyone in that way. Dissenters make a lot of sense because they have a good reason for being differnt.
