I hope you enjoyed todays discussion on aphorisms, the poem and living life to the fullest, and the idea of point of view. It amazes me how much we get done daily and yet there is so much more I would love to cover as well.
One of the things we discussed was the idea that just because you follow transcendentalism, or individualism, does not mean that you are a selfish person nor does it mean that you are not out to be a part of society. It just means that you do things on the terms that are acceptable to you. Based on this idea, respond to the following:

To me, stand and be counted can mean alot of things. I think that this ties in with how we should go out and attack life, and not let it come to us. I think stand there and be counted is a conformist statement. It wants everyone to be similar and not live on their own. I think that this is an example of what the world used to be like. Everyone is special in their own ways, and that if we just were one generic person the world would never get anywhere. Before in my life, i ad a teacher who said stop asking questions, and i think this kind of keeps people the same with no way to broaden their ways and lifestyle.

I interpret the expression "stand and be counted" in a positive way. I think it means stand up and be recognized for what you think is right. Sitting in the back and watching what is happening isn't going to make a change. You have to put forth the incentive if you want to see the results. Having your input recognized will better help others as well as make you happier with the decision. An example is voting for the president. "Stand up and be counted" fits very well into the topic of voting. If you feel strongly about your opinion on the war in Iraq, you should vote for the candidate that is for that decision. That way you had a say on whether we stay or leave Iraq. Many people complain about the president, but some of them didn't even vote. Voting gives you the right to have your voice heard.
To stand and be counted. To me this meens like let your oppinion on things be heard. for example this blog, we share our oppinions and they are heard. Another good example is voting, even though we arent able to vote yet it still is an example. You should always have the right to express how you feel, even if not everybody agrees with your oppinion. Some people may not like to hear your oppinion on things but you should always say it anyways. No matter what dont let anyoun take that right from you to state your oppinions.

Mr. Kay,
Stand and be counted can mean a lot of things. For example, this blog is a way we all share our opinions. If we all had the same response then our lives would be pretty boring. A lot of us are scared of what other people think so we dont speak our mind. Everyone is unique in diffrent ways. If people didnt express there minds then the world would not be what it is today. There are always those people that lay low and dont speak their mind on things that might make them go insane inside. '

Stand and be counted, to me, means many things. It means that you should be able to have your own standing on things. To have something that you believe so that you're not just another person in the crowd. Or it could mean that you should stand out. That you should be yourself and not what other people think you should be. I disagree with Zack Szajner on the matter of it being a conformist statement. Because, to me, it's clearly saying that if you don't be yourself, you won't be counted as an individual. But as a follower of a group who let's other people make decisions for them.

Stand and be counted to me means, have an influence, and if you do it right then you are noted. It means to fight for what you believe in. A good example would be Martin Luther King Jr fighting for black rights. He was influencial in the manor of powerful words and not violence. He was noted by words and speeches, not following the trend of violence to get attention. He made an impact on society and history by teaching everyone that we must get along with mixed ethnic groups in order to live in peace. I know martin stood and was counted because of the fact we have a day to honor him, and even today we talk about him and what he did.

This statement can mean a lot of things. I think it means to "stand up" and be heard. Everyone has their own opinion about things. This blog is even a way that we are able to express how we feel about different things. Many people are worried about what other people might think. If people in the 1700's didnt speak their mind, our country would be nothing like it is today. Everyone is unique in their own way and people shouldn't be judged for what they think or who they are. There are alot of people who don't speak their minds which is only hurting themselves. They could have some great ideas or opinions but won't speak up because they are afraid of what other people might think.

to stand and be counted is to stick up for what you belive in. to be counted for what is right for you. sometimes it is hard to do things different than everyone else. but there are times whem you can't go with the crowd because you can't stand it anymore. so go with what you think is best. just try to think if no one else was there, what would you do. you might be rewarded for your confidence.
I think the expression "Stand and be counted" affects me in a lot of ways. It mostly is a positive expression to me. Because, I think that everyone needs to express their opinion for whats right. Also because all of your life you cant just sit back and let other people express their thoughts, becasue eventually you will regret it. Also just sitting back, isnt going to make a change. Where as, taking a stand is actually trying to make a change. For example, living in America gives you a vareity of ways to stand and be counted. Like, voting for a president or govenor. So when people give you an opportunity to voice your opinions, you should take that opportunity.

Mr. Kay,
The statement, stand and be counted, means to me that if you are proud of what you are, and what you believe in, then stand up for yourself and make a difference. Stand up and be counted! If you are afraid to show what you believe in, then you need to take a chance. Who cares what other people think, you should be the one person that makes a difference in your life. Live a little, take a risk, stand up. Be who ever you want to be, even if your afraid of the outcome, just remember one thing. You'll never know what the outcome will be until you try it. Take the risk, tell the person you like that you like them, wear the clothes you want to wear. Like I said, you'll never know the outcome untill you try it.

Stand and be counted could mean a lot of things. To me it means to let your voice be heard. A person needs to stand up for their beliefs. They need their voice to be heard and counted. There is no point on having an opinion if you don't let your voice be heard. You can have a ton of great ideas and changes you want to make in the world. However, they mean nothing if they just sit inside your head and are never listened to. I don't really have a good example in my life for this but if people like Martin Luther King Jr. didn't stand up and be counted then the world wouldn't be as good as it is today. So I guess you can say if no one stood up to be counted, there would be no change, good or bad. That's why I'm going to vote when I'm older, it's a way to stand up and be counted.

Stand and be counted means a few things. I think that stand and be counted means that, If you stand for what you belive is right then people may agree with you and like your ideas. Everyone in the world is diiferent. So to be diffent and stand out, we should belive in what we belive in and not follow the crowd. Because if eveybody just followed everybody then the world would be the same. This would be a pretty boring world to live in.

The expression, "stand and be counted" is a great aphorism to live your life by. I believe that it is saying to stand up for what you believe in. To not just sit back and let others voice their opinions for you. You cannot just allow people to make choices for you. You have to actually "be counted" and let yourself be heard. Although not everyone will agree with your opinions, it does not mean that you shouldn't let others take into consideration your ideas. Expressing your personal ideas and sharing them with others helps everyone have a more rounded outlook on life. If you stay one-sided on something, you might not realize a great idea. That is why we should all be heard and we should not be afraid to be heard. We need to stand up for our beliefs and contribute to society.

'Stand and be counted'? hm... kind of confusing to me, even if I'm witty and also confusing.
I think it means to me that to be 'counted'-whatever that may mean to anyone- you must stand up to ever be included. Then there is a more optimistic way to interpret it. 'Stand for what you believe in'. Eventually someone will join you for that belief, and you won't be alone with that thought.
Don't ever think you're alone with your individual thoughts. Because there will always be someone to agree with you, someway or another.

What does stand and be counted mean to me? Well Mr.Kay it means that you need to have your voice be heard. It could also mean that you need to vote or stop complaining. My mom hated Bush and she was so tired of whining about it. So in the 04 election came around she voted. I could also mean that you need to take responsiblty for your actions. That is the part that annoys me more. Most teenagers don't do that. I think that, that is the most important thing for me.
Alexa Rumpz
This aphorism means to me that if something no one else does but you you should let them know you do that and be proud of it. A example i think that would fit this is when i didnt do my homework right. I really didnt understand the question and i did all of it wrong. So when the teacher asked me why i didnt do it right i just told here i didnt get it and just couldnt do it. I solved this problem by just asking her for help and the next time i had homework i knew what to do and exelled from then on. this is what i did to stand and be counted for. Thats what i thinj that aphorism means to me.

To stand up and be counted means to state your opinion on things. Even if your wrong in a subject in school but you stated your answer people will know you tried. Why go through life unnoticed? I would never take something in my life back because it was embarrasing. I'm not a funny person so to bring humor to the world is a great accomplishment to me. If your going to do something whether it's right or wrong then tell people about it. Tell people about your odd goals in life because even if people call you weird you don't realize it but you've probably just inspired them to make a new goal for themselves.
Carolyn Newton Period 5
Thats a tough question. to me, it means taking responsibiltiy for yourself. Taking things into your own hands. like we talked about today in class you have to make things happen for yourself. you cant just sit back and wait for things to happen for you. personally i sometimes will just watch things happen and it might work out fine but its way better when you take control on the situation. like if you watch things develop that you put into action.

it means stand out be a leader not a follower. to me it means to be your self. don't do what others expect of you. stand up be heard, just don't hide in a corner.
I interpret the phrase "Stand and be counted" in a way where people should voice their opinion, to let people hear what they have to say. You don't always want to be the person in the back just watching everyone, you want to be the person that everyone watches. So many people in the world have so much, but they're afraid to say it. It only takes one person to inspire the people around you. You can be that one person, if you say what's on your mind. Then have the courage and convection to act on it. Anybody can make a difference in the world, and you can be one of them. If you stand up and be counted.

To stand and be counted could be put in many differnt ways. One of the things is that it means you should not hide down in the corner and you should be up and around and be accounted for in life. You cant just hide yourself away from everyone, you need to be noticed by everyone and have some attention. You should stick up for someone and be noticed. Dont just be the kid who just watches and doesnt show themselves to eveyone, stand up and be accounted for in life.

One thing i interperate this as is don't let other people decide your life. Or if everyone is doing something that you think is bad don't follow them and turn into a leader. Also, if you arent sure about doing something don't do it and fall into peer pressure in any ways just wait for some real advice. Plus just be yourself which really plays into all of what i said in one way or another. Another thing is help people out when needed. For example if you think some one that is a good person is going to do drugs and fall into peer pressure then halp them out. Also, have an influence on there life don't just be "that kid in his class" make yourself" a person to him.
Ty Bouwens, 6th hour
I think stand up and be counted means to have your own opinion. Like when you vote for a president, it's your own opinion not someone else's. Most of the teachers that I have don't let you have an opinion they just tell to take notes and do the work. Life is all about making your own decisions and having a say in what you believe in. I think that the main poit of the presidential election this year is "stand up and be counted". I think this because no matter what president is elected, history is ging tobe made. All i've heard on t.v. is let youself be heard. I think this is the most important year for voters to stand up and be counted because one candidate may ruin the U.S. and the other could do great things. It's just the way you believe, and if you actually believe what the candidates say.
To me Stand and be counted can mean alot of things. Like to go out and live your live. As opportunities come take them. To make the right decisions. And live life as it comes and what you think is right, not what other people say or think. Its your life you might as well live it as you please. Sometimes is hard to go with your decision because if all of your friends are doing it, then your going to want to to. But you cant always go with what the crowd does. make decisions for your self, be heard.

I think stand means to stand up for what you think is right and what you believe in. You dont wanna just sit in the back of everyone and not say a word when you think something todally different from them. You should be able to speek up and say what you think too. You should also believe in your self. Be and individual and do your own things. You should care what other people think about your oppions and believes. Its your life so stand up for it and what you think is right.
"Stand and be counted" can mean many different things depending on the view you take as an individual. You could take the easy way out of thinking and making that statement literal. If your more like me you will try to understand the meaning behind it. I think that it means we the people are always being told what to do and we do it. If the government says we need to pay more taxes, we pay more taxes. Or from a personal point of view, when we are in elementary school we are always being told what to do. We hardly make choices for ourselves when we are little and the adults make them for us. In the end i think this will be our downfall to academic achievement, to much hand holding.

it is important to me that i am included. but that does not mean that i will do bad things to be included like drugs and such. That is against my values. I like to be included bacuase it makes me feel good. Makes me feel special. That is improatnt to me.
Stand and be counted means that you should go out and be your own person. you shouldnt wait on the world around you to do what you want and follow their example. when you set out to do something. I dont follw trends all that much. as an example i could have become a cheerlead or gone into gymnastics but i chose to do things that were of interest to me such as horseback riding and tennis. As people around me follow others i tend to like to lead my own way and follow what my heart tells me.

Stand and be counted is important.
I think this means that people have a right to their own opinion.
Many people want to be "political correct" and don't stand up for what they believe. A person needs to be unique and not go with the flow. There is not enough people who stand up for their beliefs. More people need to vote in these elections to make a stand or write to politicians. Too many people sit back and feel they cannot make a difference.

To stand i think means to stand up against something.Like if some body of people did something and taking a stand by ating out or reacting.I think its sort of like my dads old stories he tells me.When he was on strike for the detroit free press hetook a stand.Maybe he didnt choose the best action in this stand forewarning. In the strike they had popped car tires to the free press and other acts of "rebellion".I think this shows one view of a stand.Being counted is like your a part of something like when you count as a quarterback.Your with a group of quarterbacks. So this is almost like a claasification of conformity to me.If I was counted as another kidwith blue eyes there are thousands of others with blue eyes.

Even if you are the only one being counted be counted and dont back down. Dont just follow other people be a indiviual and stand up for what you belive in. MR. Kay,
I think that standing and being counted mean different things. First of all, I think that it means making a name for ourself. Makeing a name doenst just mean being a big popular movie star. It can just mean being an individual and leaving bits and peices of you with people that they will remeber for all there life. The smallest thing that you may do could impact a person life by expressing yourself that may change or alter the way a person lives their life. This can be bad and good. They may learn that by the way you live your life it doesnt get you very far. But it can also influence them to live their life the way you do because it has gotten them far in life, not changing their whole life, but being influenced while still being a transcendetalist.

I think this expression " stand and be counted " can be interpreted in many ways. I think of it like the example we used in class today about the cows. The cows are being counted in the peen and then they will be slaughtered. I fell that this expression is telling me what to do. Although it is okay to take directions I feel people should have there own thoughts in any situation. I also thought about the position of a jewish person in the holocaust and how they were striped of there individuality. I don't think i could live if i didn't have the choice of voicing my opinion

I think it means to be counted for what you believe in. Most people just stand for what everyone else stands for or just stay seated. They really need to get up and choose what they want though. It happens alot with elections which isnt a good thing. I wouldnt be surprised if a amount of obamas votes were from people who didnt want to seem like a racist. Or they dont want to vote for macaine becuase it seems like he will probably die in office before his term is over. People will act like a herd and become sheeple but whatever.

I think that stand and be counted means to go along the path that has already been sent out for you. Every day I go to school and learn, do work, and get homework. I also do the same things every day (for school) when getting up every morning, wake up, take shower, get dressed, eat breakfast, make lunch, and go to school. When we go on a plane everyone has to go though security and go to the terminals and get on the plane. Everyone in Mr. Kay’s class has to do a blog every day. Everyone has to take two finales in the school year. Most students have to get bored during orientation for school.
Stand an be counted for can mean alot of things in life. Personaly i believe it means to not feel left out in life. Not just that but do not feel as if you should be individual. Or have to make every decision by yourself. But at the same tie dont feel as if you have to follow everyones decision. Feel free to widin maybe activities choosin. Or decisions a group you are with are trying to make.
To me stand and be counted means to believe in your opinions and support them. That it is important to stand up for what you believe. That is important to not get lost in the many people sitting down. You have the power to influence others beliefs by standing up for what you believe. Many times stand and be counted has been expressed to tell people to vote. Voting is a good example of this quote because you are standing up for what you believe, and your vote is being counted. I think it is important to remember to stand and be counted, so you don't lose yourself.

Well, to get started "Stand and be counted" means alot of things. Like what we talked about in class how all the cows are dumb, and follow each other. Like if one jumped off the whole herd would probably follow to. And I think some people are like that. I feel everyone should think for themselves, but ask questions they need to be led into the right direction. Just because you think for yourself doesnt mean your selfish. Or when one black girl went to an all white school, she did what she wanted to, she thought for herself, thats bravery.

stand up for what you believe in and be counted as one of the individualist's who are counted? i feel if you show indivusualism you show independence from alot of other people. it is indeffinite significance to show difference! the more you do something, the more you get recognized. if you are respectful of other people's differences youre's will be recognized also.
In my opinion stand and be counted means a few things. One thing this may aply to could be an issue in the world. I think this may refer to belief, meaning if you believe in someting take a stand and believe what you want. You could also refer this as voting in an election for a president. Taking s vote for what you believe is best would be considered being counted. Doing nothing to be noticed would be uncounted for. Here are a few more I think may apply for being counted. I think it means be noticed in life. Being noticed may be for good things or bad. Being counted may also mean live life how you want, or do things you want.

I believe that this saying means that you should stand up in the world. I think that people shouldn't just hide and stay away from the world. I think that everyone should be noticed. I think that it could also mean that everyone has a purpose in life. However, it is up to that person to fulfill it. No one should be overlooked because they weren't the shining star. For example, in soccer, many of the people who get the assists are overlooked while the goal scorers get all of the glory. The people who get the assists are just as important because if they weren't there to assist the goal, thhe goal would have never happened.
Staned to be counted means to me that you are counted for, for whom you are and how you act. Also to make decisions for yourself and not let others influence your decisions. For example: If you go to a party and all your friends are drinking and they say its cool and its okay when you know its not. Its your decision to make the right decision for yourself telling then no. To me that an example to stand and be counted for means to me. Stand for whats right and what you knows right for you and who you are and being counted, for making the right decision. Unfortunately i tend to not make the right decision and tend to be apart of the rong instead of doing the right thing and so no.

Well, before i start, my sincerest apologies for being absent today, but after the dance, I just got really sick and sore. so i will spare the details, and my apologies for not being here, i hate missing school, and It shames me when i have to miss it.
Anyways, i believe that to stand and be counted on, means to me, that when you make your promise, you stick to it, and you go above and beyond the asked for help. that is the first thing that comes to mind for me, when I hear that statement. And although i may not do what i say a considerable amount of time, i believe that it is good to think about your choices to promise for. Now my example would have to be that, when my parents ask me to do something, and although i do not do that all the time, when i do, they really appreciate it, and i think that that is a good feeling to feel. I really, to sum this up, believe that when you make a promise, and when you follow through it, and you go up and beyond for your promise, thats what i believe to stand up and be counted for. and to add to that fact, anyone who does this for the good of people, i honor you.

This phrase can mean several things. It can be an example of transcendentalism or it can be the total opposite. To stand up and be counted can mean that you acounted for something significant in society. You contributed something and therefore makes you count as an important person. However being counted can also mean that you are just another face in the crowd. You haven't really done anything special, but you are a person so you need to be counted for. Overall, you can look at this in many ways.
This saying can mean a lot of things. To me it means that everyone is unique in their own ways, we are all different. But I also think this can be a bad statement because it would make you feel like you are going to be mocked or teased. I really have no personal experiences. I had trouble with this one.

To me stand up and count means being invloved and having control of your own life. You need to be involved and have your own opinion. Or else your basically living your life for someone else, not you. Everyday I make decidions on my own what to wear, what to eat, what to say. Thats part of what makes me, me. I stand up and count everyday I do not just go around life based on someone elses opinion. I grasp on to my concept of life and stick with it. Thats what standing up and counting means to me.
stand and to be counted. i think we all make a stand on what we belive in in some way or another. i belive this is a good thing because it lets people know how you feel. to be counted i think this is to just go with the flow of things and try to fit in. some bad things about being counted is you will never get to say excactly what you want.
Mr.kay,
To me stand and be counted menas a few things. One, is that it could mean that everybody's opinion matters. It could also mean that being your self makes you more noticeable from the crowed. Another I can think of is getting involved and doing things. Like sports, clubs, groups, or just doing something you want to do. When someone says stand and be counted I could mean anything. It all depends on how you look at it and whats happening at that time.

To stand or be counted for to me means to be a good citizen. It also could mean to speak our mind and dont let others push you around. Or even in school it could mean to take pat in class disscussions or asking questions. As a whole I think it means that you should let your voice be heard on issues. it doesnt have to be to the whole country it could just be to one other person. But if you have something to say you should say it. Dont not say something because your afraid of what others will say.

Mr. Kay,
To me stand and be counted could be a plentiful of things. It could mean that you should be there to follow. Your being told what to do and its saying you should always be like this. Think like its a square of people. It's saying you should always be in this square of people doing what they do and if you leave said designated square then you are going against something and thats not right. It seems like a demand and its like that quote that says "The world will lash those with noncomformity", or something. Its like if your not like anyone, people will get mad. It's not like if your not just like everyone, then your being bad. Its j8ust how you want to be. I don't really have a specific example, but I dont like it when people tell me how to be or to be like someone else.
