Today we began reading Of Mice and Men. Remember to re-read what we started and then read through page 16. Complete the questions including question 20 on the worksheet.
For this evening, I want you to think about what we have read in the first chapter. Based on the reading, what do you think of the two main characters Lennie and George? Obviously, they are very different. Why do you think they are traveling together? Do you think that Lennie being slow takes away from George's life experiences? How? What is the perception of mentally challenged people in our society? Do you think we perceive them fairly?

What i think of the character George would be that he likes to be in control and be and manly man instead of showing his feelings. I think Lennie is his brother or friend and is mentally challenged and thinks of George as sort of his role model. I think they are traveling together because that is what George planned on doing but then Lennie's aunt died and had no one to take care of him. I think George felt bad and then he was stuck with him but doesn't want to let him go off on his own. I do think Lennie being slow holds George back because he sometimes loses jobs because of him. I also think it is good because it sort of teaches George to be a more compassionate caring person. I think the perception of mentally challenged people in our society would be that we should feel bad for them. I think some people tease them too which is horrible. My cousin is autistic and i try not to treat him different. i just play games with him and he seems really happy. I think we treat them with pity and they may not like that sometimes. I do overall feel that people don't really make jokes about them and try to respect them.
Well Lennie and George are two very, very different characters. George is there for Lennie because the two of them don't have any one else. They're together because they both aren't "accepted" in society so they stick together. Yes, I do think that Lennie's disability does take away from George's life experiences. Even though it does I think that George wants to help Lennie because no one else will. I think that people think that mentally disabled people are incapable of functioning in society. They are capable of functioning, it's just hard for them to when no one else wants to interact with them. They are so used to being thrown aside that when someone is interacting with them they get all flustered. They don't understand how the real world works because no one will show them. I don't mean like not a single person, but parents do. Just think about it though, how would you feel if your parents were giving you all their life lessons?
The two characters Lennie and George seem like brothers to me. I think George is kind of more the boss then Lennie is. He treats Lennie like a little brother and tells him what to do. I think they are traveling together because they've been together for a while and Lennie ruined their other chances. So now they got to move on to their boss. I think Lennie being slow just makes life a little harder for George. Lennie can do just as much things as George can but just at a slower rate. He forgets a lot of things that he should remember. I don't think Lennie holds back George because Lennie is capable of doing whatever George is. I think people think mentally challenged people are a totally different person just because their challenged. People think that they can't do certain things and that they can't do some of the things we do. I don't think we perceive them fairly because were judging them on their problems.
From the first chapter, I think Lennie is mentally challenged but he still likes to try and accomplish things that normal people can. George thinks he is better then everyone else and can do whatever he wants. I think that George feels bad for Lennie. George cares for him so he can't leave him behind. I also think they may be related in one way or another. Yes, i do think that Lennie's slowness takes away from George's life experience. This is because George could travel a lot faster without Lennie. The perception of mentally challenged people in our society, sadly, is that mentally challenged people are weird. Honestly, some of the mentally challenged people i have met, may be the hardest workers in school. People need to respect these people remembering that we are all human.

i think lennie and george travel together because they are entertained by each others stupidity, and they no each other best. another reason is probally because they've been friends for all long time and cant stand not being together. i think lennie being slow takes alot from george because they grag on each other. so i think it gives them a reason to bitch about something. the perception of the mentally handicapt people are just stupid and a wast of people in our society. idk bout u guys but i percieve them way differently then assholes do, they perceive them as nothing but shit. i perceive them ass people just like me and u guys.
When I first started reading this book, I made a few judgements about both of the main characters. I saw Lenny as a big guy who wouldnt hurt anyon. I saw George as a guy who was looking after Lenny and as a guy who wanted to be in charge all fo the time. Both of the characters are traveling together for some reason that I am unsure of but I have a few assumptions as of why they are. I believe that they are traveling together because they are brothers trying to stick it out together during the depression. I also believe that they are really close and enjoy eachothers company. George tends to be in charge because he believes that he needs to look after his brother lenny because of his disability. I feel that George needs to protect Lenny in the harsh society during the depression. All in all, the first part of this book gives a lot of insight toward what will happen during the rest of it.
Lennie seems to be like a big friendly guy, that is mentally challenged. goarge seems like a sneeky little guy but also seems like a ok guy. they are very different for veriest resones, like the obvious Lennie is big and gorge is small. but also how they act, for example lennie seems easygoing and laid back wile Gorge seems uptight and quicker to get angry.my guess is there brothers is something so that is why they are traveling together.lennie is probly taking away from georges experions, but he also adds in his own way. but hees taking away things like a long lasting job or even a wife. i preserve mentally challenged people as people with some problems, and should get some help. we preserve them fairly but some people dont.
Right now I think Lennie is mentally challended. He really likes George from the way he acts around him, and he really needs George from the way George reacted to him leaveing. George on the other hand would some what like to be separated from Lennie and to live with a women and not him. He also seems like he doesn't want Lennie to feel bad, but he doesn't want to have to watch over him all the time. I think that they are traveling together because Lennie's aunt died and he needs to be able to get some money. I think Lennie adds some experiences but also takes some away. George said that he might be able to get a girl if he didn't have Lennie, so that takes away some experiences with relationships. Since Lennie is mentally challenged it provides George with the opportunities of being freiendly and careing. People in our society perciev some mentally challenged people as babys. Sometimes we don't even notice that people are mentally challenged because they are haveing a good day. I believe that this is not fair because we are percieveing people on what they might have done on a bad day and not on who they really are.
I think George puts on a very big front and definitely enjoys taking control and making the decisions between him an Lennie. I think Lennie is definitely a follower and much rather prefers to be told what to do instead of making his own decisions. I think they travel together because they feel comfortable together. They can give each other what they need. George needs somebody who allows himself to be controlled and Lennie needs somebody who is willing to help him out and lead him along the journey. I don't think Lennie is holding George back at all. Actually, I think Lennie being slow will be better for George and will help him grow. I think in our society today, mentally challenged people are seen as being "weird" and "stupid." These are definitely not fair and in my opinion, one of the worst stereotypes around.
From the main chapter, I pick up much about the 2 characters. I think that George is a lonely man, and when he found this boy named Lennie, he couldn't not take the boy with him, so he is almost compassionate. Also I think George is very short-tempered because he always gets mad at Lennie whenever he does something wrong. I perceive Lennie as a man who has some sort of mental illness but is just a fun-loving guy who doesn't mean to cause any harm. I think that they are traveling together because they worked previously on a job together and they became close and didn't want to leave eachother. Maybe George felt bad for Lennie and wanted to take him under his wing because he didn't want to see him alone. Yes, I do think that Lennie being slow takes away George's life experiences because I think George wants to have a girlfriend and go to the bars and stuff with other guys but he can't because of Lennie. In our society, people perceive mentally challenged people very differently than people without a disability. People in our society don't think that they can do much because they have a disability and they should be somewhere else. No, I do not think that we perceive them fairly because underneath it all, they are just that same as all of us. Sure, they can't do as much things as we can, but they still have feelings and have the same emotions as us whether you know it or not. Overall, you can tell a lot from this first chapter.
I think that George and Lennie are traveling together because they might be related. Or there families are really close together. I think that George is like a control freak. He gets frustrated easily because he has to repeat himself to help Lennie. I think Lennie is struggling with himself. He's trying to remember thinks that people tell him however, they just keep slipping away. I toldly think that Lennie being slow takes away from George's life experiences. With Lennie, George does not get to have a full job. Since Lennie keeps getting into trouble George and Lennie keep having to move. That hurts with George's working experience. He keeps moving around the country. In our society the perception on mentally challenged people is not good. People think that they can not be reliable. That they will never come thurs that they will mess up or just forget. I do not think we perceive them fairly. Everybody is different. Just because someone has a mental disablity does not mean that they are not unique. Those people are just as smart and hard working and everybody else. It just takes them more effort to achieve there goal.
What i think of George is, is that he is blunt but to the extream. What i think of Lennie is that he is a nice person who wouldnt hurt anyone, on purpose. I think they are travelig together because i think they both kind of need each other. I think Lennie needs George to stay on track and all that, and George needs Lennie because George doesnt seem much like a social happy person and Lennie seems like a upbeat happy guy. Our perception if mentally challenged people in our society is that they are different and not like us at all and that they need more help and need to be treated different then we do. But that isn't true at all. I think we do not perseve them fairly at all.
In my view i think lennie and george are quite different from each other. George is more strict, kind of pushy and doesnt care that much about lennie. It seems like george just thinks hes lennies boss. Lennie seems a little slow at first i thought maybe lennie was just a kid around 7 or 8 but after reading more in depth into the chapter i realized lennie might be about the same age as george and just mentally challenged. I think lennie and george are traveling together because they are brothers and geroge doesnt want to leave lennie by himself. I dont think lennie being slow takes away from georges life experiences because george seems mean and i dont think he would have a lot of memorable sentimental experiences anyways. If he does take away from his life experiences it could just be george isnt able to go to other places for work as fast. The perception of mentally challenged people in our society is people feel bad for them but they also cut them short of their capabilities. I dont think we perceive them fairly because people automatically think just because they arent as capable as we are to form relationships and learn as quick that they are stupid. In reality most mentally disabled people are really smart and they can still form relationships and learn but it just takes a little longer for them.
I think George is a controlling individual. I think lennie is a little slow and needs george around. I think they are traveling together because maybe george feels he needs to help lennie out because he knows he can't make it by himself. I do think lennie takes away georges life expiriances. George explained in chaper one about how lennie is always getting him into trouble and they have to flee there job. Without lennie george would have a job and could live freely on his own. But he chooses to stay with lennie because he is slow. The perception of them is that they are weird and different. People think they are helpless and they need help all the time but this isant true. Some mentally disabled people are very smart like Mr. Hawking for example. So therefor i believe we do not perceive them fairly in society.
Based on the book so far, I view both characters very differently. I view Lennie as a happy-go-lucky guy who just takes things as they come to him. I think of George as someone who wishes he could care more about himself, but knows he should put other first because when he doesnt he feels guilty. I think they are traveling together because of the fact that George puts others first. If anyone else had to take care of Lennie, they may not beable to handle it the way he does. Also, they both care and know about eachother. I think that Lennie does take away frmo Georges life experiences, and George even tells Lennie that. By having to take care of Lennie, George misses out on things like meeting women and having the fun that he wants to have. Most times, i percieve people who are challenged as people we shoud treat differently and feel bad for because of their dissabilities. However, they shold be treated just the same as everyone else. Just because they are different doesnt mean they shoudl be treated like tehy are.
In the book of mice and men George and Lennie are two very different people but they seem like a perfect match. on thing that comes to mind when thinking of George and Lennie is that Lennie is a germ-a-phobic because when they were at the lake/pond area George was drinking away at the water and Lennie was hesitant.which means i think that George is the complete opposite so he really doesn't care what people think and doesn't care what he drinks. i think that they are traveling together because while George was traveling Lennie's aunt died and no one could watch over him so George said why not. in my opinion Lennie being slow enhances Georges traveling experiences. the reason i think this is because i think George sees the simple things in life as another great wonder. i say this because when they are at the pond/lake Lennie was looking at the ripples in the water and thought they were amazing. i think we undermine mentally challenged people due to the fact they have a different thinking process that we do. But there are a hand-full of people that see them as normal people just need help. i think that in our world today we perceive them like little kids because they might not be as matured in certain areas as other people are. this is how i think about the book so far and how it relates to this subject.

The two main characters are obviously very different, not only in physical features but in their personality traits as well. George is a very strong man and he could fight for himself. However he has to take care of Lennie and himself and still figure out a way to get money. He seems to get frusterated at times with having to deal with Lennie but then he realizes that he is more then Lennie's caretaker, he is his friend. Lennie is a goofy man almost. He has a bad memory but you can tell he is trying to remember and not cause so many problems for George. He doesn't know better then to play with dead mice or pet a woman's dress without her permission. They are friends, which is probablly the main reason they are always traveling together. Also, I think George would feel bad leaving Lennie, knowing that he has no place to go and is not capable of taking care of himself. I do think that Lennie's disabilities are taking away from George's life experiences but George is trying to understand that it is for the best. The perception of mentally challenged people in our society is that they are different from us. People use hurtful words sometimes to describe them and it is not fair. They can not help the fact that they are disabled but I think we should try to treat them more fairly.
I think the characters fit well together. I think George partly resents Lennie for being slow because he doesnt get as much out of life. He'd rather be out with a woman or having a family. the other half of George cares about Lennie and doesn't want to leave him alone.
I think the perception or mentally challanged perople is they're stupid or can't do things right or on their own. I think this perception is partly right. I think it depends on the level of mental retardation. Some can function on their own with out help, where as others will need someone their whole lives. I don't think we treat them fairly because they seem to make our ives difficult. We really just nedd to give them a chance
I feel bad for Lennie; it's not his fault he is the way he is. George seems like a guy who likes things in order. I think he tries to be nice, but sometimes he just gets annoyed of Lennie. I think they might be traveling together because they are related. George talks about Lennie's aunt Clara, so mabye they are cousins. I think the fact that Lennie is slow take away a lot of the good experiences in George's life. George always has to take care of him, and he doesn't get to be free on his own. Also, as George said, Lennie gets in trouble a lot; this also gets George into trouble. I think our society perceives mentally challenged people as stupid and sometimes useless. I do not think this is fair at all. Some mentally challenged people are very smart, but they may not have the best skills to be social with others.
In the story "Of Mice and Men", it appears that George is a middle aged man taking care of another man, Lennie. I perceive George as a good-hearted, worn out man that often doesn't think before he speaks. Lennie makes me think of a five year old boy trapped in a grown mans body. On the outside he looks intimidating and mature, but on the inside his mind is struggling to catch up with his age.
It seems as if they travel together because George is Lennie's "guardian". George is looking after poor Lennie because Lennie isn't able to stand alone and it is obvious, by George's outburst in Chapter one, that this burden he carries is taking a toll on his life. It has to be hard to take care of a grown man who can not seem to keep a job because he doesn't know any better. When Lennie gets into trouble and has to move away and start a new life all over again, George must start all over again too.
I believe that our society stereotypes the mentally challenged too much. I dont ever see it in the educational world, but in the business world, handicapped men and woman must fight to be treated with the same respect. They are prejudiced against by many who will not look past their unfortunate disability and see that they are capable of the same things anyone can do if only people would be patient and understanding.
Lennie and George are indeed different. For example the book starts out listing the similarities and differences of the two. One is tall, one is short, however they are both black men. Lennie has a disibility. This does take away from George's life experiences. George has been fired from the work place because of Lennie dragging him down. Although they are there for eachother which is good. In our society, we perceive mentally challenged people as lessproductive as we are. I don;t beleive we perceive them fairly, and I think we treat them softer than other. However, if we don;t treat them like normal people they will never learn. And the truth is, Mentally challenged people are much smarter than everyone thinks.
By reading the first chapter, I think George seems to be the master in this friendship. He is more of a person to lead instead of follow. He goes by what he wants to go by and doesn't seem like he would do well under the orders of another. I think Lennie on the other hand, is more of a dependent person. Not because he is mentally challenged but because he doesn't communicate with other people well and needs someone to help guide him in a way. I think that they are traveling with each other because George doesn't really have any other friends. From what I can see in this Chapter, he mostly just sticks with Lennie. I think Lennie's Disability has some effect on George's life experiences like how George always has to remind Lennie of things. Today, it seems people view the mentally challenged as people who are lesser beings then themselves. I don't think that this is fair in any aspect. Just because it might take a bit longer to learn or to comprehend something doesn't mean that they should be treated differently for it.
