Day 14

Hope your writing went well. Again, this exercise was more about seeing what types of writers are in the room so I know which skills I need to teach.

For this evening, please respond to the following quote on character and integrity:

"Character is doing the right thing when nobody's looking. There are too many people who think that the only thing that's right is to get by, and the only thing that's wrong is to get caught."
J.C. Watts

I belive this quote couldn't be more true if it tried. Too many people today only do good things to get rewarded in some sort of way. We don't normally do something good just to do it. We want other people to know of the good things we have done. We should do good things more often, not to make other people happy, but because we want to. There is also too many people who will keep doing something bad over and over again until they get caught. People should be able to know whats right from wrong and not do something wrong. Don't get me wrong, we're not all perfect and we do make mistakes. But if we know better then to do it, then we should not do it.

I believe that J.C. Watts is absolutely correct. There are not enough people in the United States that have character. I believe you should be doing whatever it takes to help the community, 24/7. Most people love others who would do stuff for them. Mostly without even being asked to do them. That is what to have character means to me, doing something without being told for the good of everybody else. I try to have character as much as possible.

I think this quote can relate to many people. This quote relates to people during a lot of circumstances. One circumstance is during sports. In sports somepeople work really hard when the coach is looking and just screw arround when their not. These people don't gain as much from practicees, workouts and/or conditionings. Others work hard all the time. These are the people that over all gain more from what they do.

The quote is more right than wrong. Most people do the things they do just to get rewarded. everyone should do things because it's the right thing to do. If you do things without being asked, you will be loved by many people. If your told to do do something right everyday, then others will think that you're stubborn and stuck-up.

This quote really relates to my life. Its hard to admit, but very true. The only thing that I disagree with is there part that says character is doing the right thing when no one is looking. I believe that true character is doing the right thing when everyone is looking. This quote describes how almost everyone in high school live their lives. In a way, it seems like the ugly truth to me. It needs to change, but I can guarantee you it won't.

When it comes to character and the way people feel about it. This quote is totally true. People can be selfish and they think that if someone sees then doing something, like helping a homeless for example, it is more important than if they were to do it simply because they knew it was right. No one wants to take the time out of their oh-so-busy day to help some one, unless they have someone who will be there to give them a pat on the back for it. On another note regarding this quote, if someone feels that another person will think the action they are doing is wrong, they will hide it even if they feel its right. They won't just stand up for what they believe in. Which is exactly why this quote is true, because people rely on other peoples reactions to decide their own actions.

I like this quote a lot. I think J.C. Watts is correct! There are so many people out there that only care about the reward. And even though they know what the right thing is, they choose to ignore it. If you fear that you will get caught, you are obviously doing something wrong, why bother doing it? Everyone does some good things, but people who do it just because... that is what's good. You shouldn't need to be rewarded for doing something simple that helps someone, or something. It should be a decision that you make because you want to do it, not because you want recognition. People need to change.

i think that this quote is correct in every single way. it feels like everybody toady is doing somthin thats not right but dont care because they havent gotten cought. we also sit there and brag about the things i we do. like when some one tryies to be the hero in a bad situation. somtimws it would be better to stay quite then it would be to try and climb the ladder to fame. i think the people who try to climb the ladder to fame should do some volenteer work. it would be benifical because they would feel great within them selves. that is what i think of J.C. Watts quote.

This is tough. My brain is mushy i just woke up. Um, J.C. is right tho. People in the U.S. don't really have character. Alot of people only do things to benifit them or just because there told. Not to put anything into something or to just do something for someone eles. I can'' believe i can't spell that word, brain fart. I try to just do things to help others out but sometimes im selfish. probibly because its because im an only child. But everyone is a little selfish. now im gunna go blast music to wake up.

I believe that J.C. Watts has made a quote that explains most of the Americans today. The Americans of today all want to be noticed for something good that they have done. These good deeds would not be done if no one was looking though. Character is something that we all want everyone to think we have so we will do the right thing when someone is looking, but that would not be what they would have done if no one was looking. This happens in school a lot because a lot of students want teacher to think they are good students but when the teachers not in the room they become a different person. People who have character all the time dont come very often. J.C. Watts quote is one of the most accurate quotes I have read.

I find that the quote is indeed very much so true. Our alterer motives these days have been nothing but self served. We do good to get rewarded, we do bad because we need to do so sometimes to survive, and if we get caught doing so. Then all we get is a painful punishment. I find such motives a little rotten, i know that as human beings we should know the diffrence between right and wrong. But sometimes doing the wrong thing isn't of completely bad motives. Think about it, why do poor people steal? because they need the things that they take and doing good dose little to help them. On the other hand why must the rich people act all good when their motives are almost as rotten as those who steal? Its nothing more then a spiral of good and bad. An equal ballance is required in order to live life with the desires we want and the image of how we want other people to see us.

J.C watts is one the the people who are wise. i do agree with J.C because those who do good don't always want to be rewarded because they believe that doing good is a reward. those who do bad sometimes believe that they are doing good sometime. the best example is of this is the movie "fight club". character is determined by other people but you can choose by your actions on how they judge you. so weather you are good or bad that shapes you as a character and shows what kind of person you are. so character in my opinion is what you do and whether people recognize your good or bad deeds.

I think this quote is exactly right. Most people now a days only do things if they know they will get some type of goody for it. Its hard for most teens to admit but most of us live our lives this way. How many kids do you know would do their chores for free? uhm none. This quote should relate to about 99% of the students at lakeland. The only sad part is nothing about this is going to change.

I thing J.C. Watts is right. But i don't think there is anything rong with just getting by. As long as it doesn't affect anybody else, just yourself. if your a guy who works on cars and stuff, you should try your best so no one gets hurt. But if your doing something that doesn't mater if its your absolute best, then who cares. If you like doing your best every time then that's cool to. I like to try my best but if it doesn't hurt to relax and slack a little, theirs nothing rong with that.

This quote by J.C. Watts shows a lot about character and integrity. When Watts says, "character is doing the right thing when nobody's looking", it immediatly reminds me of volleyball. In the beginning of the year, my coach gave our team a speech about integrity. A lot of the time in practice when you're doing a really easy drill, you tend to slack off when you know coach isn't watching. But then when your coach is watching, you try and do extra good to show off. As a true team player, you have to have character and integrity. Also, when Watts says, "there are too many people who think that the only thing that's right is to get by", I think of myself. I am an over achiever, and many people say that that's going to make me successful and live a happy life. For instance in school, I try my hardest all the time to maintain all "A's". A lot of my friends that I know just slide by with "C's" and "B's" when I know that they are capable of more. Another part in the quote that strikes me is when Watts states, "...and the only thing that's wrong is to get caught" because that's not true. If you know you're doing something wrong, then why are you doing it when you have a high risk of getting caught? Like when people do drugs and alcohol, why do it when you could at any moment get caught? Character and integrity are things that I look for in a person and I agree with Watts' quote.

I think that what J.C. Watts is trying to say is that you may be doing somthing right when people are watching you, but when they turn their backs you cheat yourself and don't give it your all. Sometimes you may think oh, they aren't looking I can cheat my way out of it. For example, if you are a runner, let's say your training for a big meet coming up soon. You have to run 3 miles everyday. Your coach doesn't watch you run because he trusts you. You can either do the right thing and run your miles and cheat yourself and not do good in the race, or run and do great in the race. Doing the right thing is always better than cheating yourself out of it.
