Good job with vocab and grammar today. Please, please study for both quizzes this week. As I explained, there are many points assigned to these quizzes and you should not allow them to bring your grade down.
For this evening, we will look at current events. Again, make sure you pick an event that is not entertainment or sports based unless you can some how attach them to something relevant going on in our world. Give a brief explanation of the event and how it directly effect you, your community and your world.

"Rising health care costs leave a growing number of Americans either uninsured or with insurance that does not provide the coverage they need and deserve – especially the 11 million Americans with cancer"(http://www.healthreform.gov/).
Many people have herd about obama's plan to increase taxes so that the U.S has health care. But what obama has not thought over is that illegal immigrants would also be getting health care that we paid for. this effects me because of my future i could be paying higher taxes then people right now. this effects my community because they vote for this and if they approve it then they would add to the problem of illegal immigrants getting something that they don't pay for. that is my opinion on the health reform plan.
"Obama favors investigating ACORN." This was the headline in yesterday's Oakland Press. The group acorn had a couple caught on hidden video posing as a prostitute and her pimp. People have been wanting further investigation toward this group because of the lastest hidden video of them. President Barack Obama also says that it deserves further investigation, but he said "Frankly, it's not really something i've followed closely..i didn't even know that ACORN was getting a whole lot of federal money." (The Oakland Press, 9-21-09, pg. A1) Obama is the president and he should know where alot of the federal money is going. The fact that he didn't know makes me worry about what else he's just overlooking. This effects my community because sense he's our president and he is "unaware" of where some of the goverment money is going, he could also not know where some of our tax money is going.
The current event article I'm writing on is called "Feds Seek about a dozen people in terror Investigation." It is about Federal agents arresting three men in connection with what the Justice Department has said was a plot to detonate bombs in the United States. The men involved in this act are being charged with lying to Federal Agents. All three of these men are origionally from Afghanistan but are now legal in the U.S. If convicted, they will be charged with eight years each in prison. The eldest will be allowed to go home but under electronic monitoring and required to remain there. This event effects me and my community in pretty much the same way. If we were to be bomed again then it would have been like another 9/11. If we were to be bomed again then it might be worse than last time. That is my opinion on this ariticle.

IS it swine flu or is it the winter flu? people have been wondering wither or not to send in there children when they have the sniffles because they are not sufre if they might have swine flu. in study with swine flu in mexico 30% showed signs of fever and 15% showed none at all. also they have proved that it is a 50/50 chance that u either have a cold or swine flu. Richard Wenzel say that those who are even a little sick feeling should stay home for at least 24 hours to prevent spread. he also says that some of the sytopms are ver much like the flu like headache, stuffy nose, and vomiting. so in order to help prevent this please make sure you wash your hands after the bathroom and do not sneeze into your hands either.

Many food lables are found to be incorrect. There is a possibility that every 1 of 4 food lables are wrong now a days. Thats 25% of the food lables we read are most likely wrong! People use food lables to help them make better decisions based on the nutrition facts but if they're wrong they're not helping. Only Florida tests their foods to make sure the lables are right. In the past years they have found errors in:
-sugar in sugar free coconut pies sold at walmart.
-sugar in sugar free syrup by Walden Farms
-more sodium in Orville Redenbacher popcorn cakes.
-sugar in sugar free Hill & Valley apple walnut muffins.
-more fat in publix whole wheat hamburger buns
-more sugar in sunsweet prune juice
-& more...

"We understand the gravity of the climate threat. We are determined to act," Obama says (http://news.aol.com/world). He says, "that the United States has done more to promote clean energy and less polution in the last 8 months than we ever have throughout history". This is a good thing because if polution gets really bad then many things could happen. One thing is that the sea levels couls rise because of the polar ice caps melting. John F. Kenidy once observed that our problems are man made therefore they can be solved by man. This relates to me because future populations will be lowering because of the unstable climate of global warming. I would really like it if my family lives long.
Some people are still going on about the passing of Micheal Jackson. Many years ago, "He was lauded and ridiculed. He broke down barriers and built them around himself. He soared to heights unimaginable with his music, and he made the ignominious front page of gutter tabloids worldwide.(http://www.cnn.com/SPECIALS/2009/Michael.Jackson.remembered/) Most should just let him rest in peace. I just hope he can, along with Thriller, billy jean, and the rest of his songs. R.I.P M-J.

"We cannot continue the same pattern of taking a few tentative steps forward and then stepping back," noted Obama after the meeting with the Israeli Prime Minister and Palestinian President. Obama has failed to relaunch negotiations and restart peace talks but assured the Prime Minister and President that he would keep up with his efforts. This was a setback for Obama and overall a disappointment for the U.S.. This relates to my community because it involves my friends, my neighbors and possibly my family leaving to go to a war that Obama has not put enough effort into resolving conflicts and learning from past president's mistakes.

Currently, Detroit City Council conciders strip club crackdown. At the hearing, they talked about a ban on lap dances and VIP rooms. Other groups, like religious groups, want harsher rules. They think that there should be an alcohol ban and a requirement that dancers where opaque pasties. On the contrary, these clubs employ over 6,700 people and bring around three million dollars annually. Also, the clubs are a way for the dancers to get food and it's a way of life for them. Most club employees, from DJs to dishwashers, also would have to pass background checks and wouldn't get licenses if they've committed specific crimes, including some drug and sexual offenses. This event effects me because if all of the people get fired who work at these places, it's just more of an economic deficit that my generation will have to clean up. For my community, like i've said before, it keeps ruining the economy. My world is effected because this banning of the clubs basically takes away your freedom of speech. If they do follow through with banning strip clubs, it will just be another way the government interferes with our rights. As you can see, a big debate is flaring over the issue of strip clubs.

"House votes to extend jobless benefits." People in danger of losing their unemployment benefits, are to be getting a 13-Week reprive. The House all agreed to this on Tuesday. This is not giving any benefits to longtime unemployment in the states that have a lower amount of joblessness. The Bill was easily passed. This is being offered to about 300,000 jobless people. The unemployment rate right know is 9.7% and is said to get all the way down to 10% by 2010. This is effecting me and the community around me because, not many people have jobs anymore because of this poor economy were dealing with right know, so unemployment is very important. Many people count on that to get them through.
Woops i forgot to Cite it.

Sorry.
On Tuesday 9 people died in Georgia and Alabama. the deaths were blamed on downpours in the southeast. The rain caused flooding that caused wide spread damage.Georgia officials estimated $250 million in damages. this will affect the world because products that would have been maid shipped from that will no longer. it affect me and the community for the same reason. It would affect me if i wanted a product that was made in the area of the flood, and i would int be able to get it.

"Conservationists should ""pull the plug"" on giant pandas and let them die out", says naturalist Chris Peckham. Chris believes that even though the panda is cute and rare, that they should cut off funds to try and protect this animal. They are spending millions of dollars per month to try and keep these pandas safe. He believes that that money could be used on other important things because the pandas can't survive alone. I personally would like to see the pandas stay alive. Also, I would like to see the money spend on these pandas to decrease and spend the money on other animals. This would affect our community by not being able to see these pandas up close at zoos. I hope these pandas stay alive, but the money spent on them should go down.

"Ten Big Companies That Are Veering Toward Bankruptcy."
This is a current event within our nation, and it's worrying many people into total havoc. This article shows how our economy isn't growing for the better anytime soon, and we need to take immediate action. personally, this affects me because i go to many of the stores that are on the list for possible bankruptcy. This will cause total devastation to our economy even more if these business shut down. As a nation, we need to ban together and just find a way to bring our economy back to the way it needs to be. American standards are really lowering compared to other countries around the world. This needs to change, need I say more?

Our climate is taking a turn for the worse. Obama says that if we dont take immediate action then there might not be action we can take. Obama has been speaking a a special summit on climate changes and they say the results are not good. A lot of people applaud his speech making other countries jion in. If we dont get our climate on the right path then it can be a catastophy for the generations to come. One of the ways we plan to change this is by making 40 million hectares of forest by 2020. This job will done by Hu and all of Chinas help. This is why we need to take the next step in helping our enviornment.
