Week 3, Day 7

Remember that we will be working fast and like a class that can stay on topic tomorrow as we need to complete the discussion and do another activity to stay on schedule.

From the discussion questions:

Although fear can have beneficial effects on an individual, what are some likely destructive effects? Where does fear come from? Past experiences? Other people? Ignorance? Use examples from your personal life or from society.

Some destructive effects that fear can have on people would have to be, if someone was afraid of being killed they might kill someone else. Or in a more less intense situation, if someone is afraid to go into a haunted house maybe the rest of the group cant go through because of that persons fear. I think fear comes from what you learn or what you don't understand. Most people are afraid of the unknown and don't tend to give something or some one in certain situations a chance. I'm personally afraid of clowns. They are meant to spread happiness and joy but they are just creepy. the other thing I am afraid of would have to be large snakes. Their really fast and could bite you with their fangs. I also used to be afraid of the water. One summer when I was 6 my friends mom took us to the water park and we went in the wave pool. She lost track of me and i got sucked under and was panicking. I finally got up after a moment of struggling. Ha my mom wouldn't let me go back over their after that.

Destructive effects of fear on an individual are: making you unable to do certain tasks because you're so frightened of it, or make you act in ways you normally wouldn't.
Fears can come from many things. For example if, when you were little, you had a spider jump on you and it scared you to death, you might be fearful of spiders and never want one near you. Or, if someone needs something done at their job, but needs someone elses help, they might scare/intimidate that person into helping them. Maybe someone made you go into a "haunted house" by scaring you. Now you don't want anything to do with a haunted house ever, even if your friends are extremely into haunted houses.so fear can come from many things, past experiences, others, and many other things.

LIke your future. People could be afraid of their future and how it might turn out.Peoples fears could come from really anything. Personal icsues o rpast experiances.

Some destructive effects of fear are peer persure, and think something is bad but really good. Fear comes from a person mind and things like experiences, and people. For example if you had a negative experience with a dog bitting you, then you may not like dogs. This negative experiece makes you affraid of all dogs not just the one that bit you. But fear can also come from other people such as not trying a food beacause your parents dont like the food, but the food could be to you likey if you tryed it. Fear can also come from ignorance and think or beliving things that are not proven. For example if your freind does not like so and so the you might think that this person may hurt you without even meeting them. If you dont know or understand something or it may appear or sounnd bad you may become of afrid of it without knowing the whole story.

Fear can be destructive in a way that you can stay in your little comfort zone for too long. Not being an out going person because of fear can really hold you back. Another destructive way of fear is holding yourself back from a love. For example, soccer for me. Much of the time people quit soccer either because they just don't want to do it anymore or they are scared of getting hurt. Pain is a price you have to pay in any sport you do. I think that fear is a good thing because it shows people what they can persevere through and overcome. Fear comes from all over. A large portion of fear comes from current events and the news. People get scared of all of the murders and terrifying things that happen to people. This really holds people back from their full potential. Past experiences really frightens people too. For example in society, a bad experience such as rape or murder can really scar a person for life and make them paranoid. Other people also contribute to fear because your fear is another person's enjoyment. People get laughed at for being scared which makes them even more afraid than they originally were.

Fear is in everyones lives unless you have been tought to ignore it. I think a destructive effect would most definantly be skidishness. If you were lets say atacked or almost killed by a person you will look at things diffrent. Knowing an average man could easily harm you would mean a lot. You would tend to be carefull among strangers and watch your back. This brings up what we went over in class today. During 911 people were worried about arabs killing us. Fear can tend to cause an instand dis-trust or prejudice outlook on potentionaly innocent people. This fear is caused by a harm or dislike to one another. Some people can figure out how to face there fears, or have classes to face there fears. Some people may have been taught to totaly ignore there fear. An example would be the U.S. Navy Seals...they are tought by trainers what to expect in combat and prepare them with scenarios that can happen to them before they actualy happen. Just so they know how to react and survive. Fear is in our DNA and we can only live with them or avid them.

Fear can be destructive because it can affect a persons life. Most phobias are fears. Some phobias have a big impact on your life. For example if you were closiphobic, and you had to do a job where you may be in small places, you wouldn't beable to do that job. You wouldn't beable to do it because of some dumb fear that you have. This can affect you life alot, you may have to find a lower paying job to suit your needs. I think that people have fears beacause past exsperiance. If something bad happened to you that you never want to rexsperance than you will most likley have a fear of that thing. I also think that fears are created because we aren't used to things or other people say that that things should be scary. If the people who are afaid of clowns wouldn't be afraid of them if they were more commmon. Or if the movie IT was never made, because that movie is not good to watch when you are a kid. I think that a fear is only a fear if you really want it to be.

There are many destructive effects about fear, some that I can think of are missing out on fun events, because your fear overcomes you. Another one is when you are scared you tend to act differnt then usual. I think that fear comes from bad experiences in the past. For example,if you are little and watch a scary movie with monsters and stuff in it, then you will forever have nightmares about monsters. I'm personally deathly afraid of sharks. I really dont know why, because I've never been put in a situation with sharks. But, I think its because of all the stories that are told, of all the shark attacks and people dieing because of shark attacks, and they're just plain creepy. The only story I have in mind was when I was in Mexico, when my family was all going snorkling in the ocean, and I didnt go because my fear of sharks got the best of me.

there is many different destructive effects someone can get from fear. like, it someone is scared of dying or being killed they might kill other people. I think that fear can cone from other people by, maybe someone was bullied at one point in there life. Or if you have gotten into a fight with another person then maybe you will be scared of them. I think it also has a lot do with past experiences. One reason would be that maybe when you were growing up you didnt have the best childhood. Or even if you had a sibbiling that was older and they were getting into alot of trouble or doing bad things then maybe you would be afraid of that. I dont really have any fears from past experiences but i do have fears. One of them is dying, i used to cry all the time about it, i dont even wanna picture not living. I think is just really weird how people die. Another would be getting robbed. i dont really know why but i just think it would be scary for someone to come in your house if your home or not at home and take all your things. My last one would be a house fire while im sleeping, im just scared that one day maybe my house will set on fire and i will burn alive or someone in my family will. even not being able to get out and having your family members crying.

Fear is good for personal safety and most of the time it can save your life. Some destructive effects are that it can take away your life by making you too paranoid to try anything new. Fear is a mental balance of what is safe and what is not, but if your brain thinks too much that nothing is safe then you build up a wall and are afraid to walk anywhere without the thought of getting hurt. Ignorance of other people can be a large cause of why you might be scared. When my friends have died of not wearing a seatbelt in the car or not wearing a helmet on their ATV, I got a fear of four wheelers and cars. That was an irrational fear because what I should have realized then was that you should take precautions instead of being afraid to do something you've always done. Past experiences are the biggest cause of all of my fears though; when my train hit a lady a long time ago, I bacame afraid of anything having to do with trains or railroads. I still am afraid of those things, I'll still freak out if I hear a train horn or cross railroad tracks, but I really learned to not kill myself. haha. I've also learned to not cross railroad tracks and take in the factors of situations instead of being terrified of everything.

fear could definatly be benefical also, if your afraid to do something that could hurt you it could be a protection. some negetive affects of fear i can think of would be unsureness. for example when your afraid of a sport or activity your not as willing or confident to go do it. i think of the show fear factor, the whole point of that show was for people to face thier fears. not having to feel limited or fear things everyday was what they were affter. fear comes from the thought that if you do something it could hurt you or affect you in a negative way. if you were snowboarding and you couldnt feel pain there wouldnt be any reason to fear getting hurt.

I think that when fear is destructive it causes a gap in a persons life. I think that these gaps a phobias and things where this person will not go out of their comfort zone to complete. I think that a phobia is something that can be easily broken. I tihnk that the fear comes from down inside where people think they can harm themselves in a way. I was always afraid of riding rollercoasters because i saw a video where people flew off the tracks and i always thought it would happen to me and i would die. My cousin is deathly afraid of doing flips. He thinks that he will somehow break his neck. However i dont think it hads anything to do with ignorance. I think that the fear itself may cause ignorance but nothing more.

mr. kay,
today in class you told me i didn't have enough sentences fo December 3rd and 4th. i check and i have 7 sentences in both.

Fear is a very interseting thing to think about. some people were hurt emotionally or physically, saw something disturbing, or something the've went through. sometimes people don't really know why they are scared of something. mabey its because something happened but they can't remember because they were little, but it made an impact on them. fears can make a person strtonger if they can conquer them. they can also hoold you back from life experiences. for me i am terribly afraid of lakes. i don't have swimming problems at all.my mom is a swim instructor and my family has a pool. i swim almost everyday in the summer. i even used to live on a lake wheni was younger for awhile. i would swim and go tubing. when people hear that i'm scared of lakes they assume it's because i think its dirty or something not very serious. i am really confused why i am scared. we have a cabin up north on a lake and i just sit on the boat while everyone is in the water no matter how hot it is outside. i wish i could jump in and have fun. so sometimes i try to get in but i just can't. it seems so easy to just walk down the ladder or jump off the side but it's not. i don't if its because i'm afraid of the unknown or if an incident that happened to me.

kristen said...

Some likely destructive effects of fear would be being held back. Allowing your fear to control you. Someone who feels as though their worst fear is extremly horiable, they will miss out on great experience. If they would just conquer their greatest fear then they will fear very little. This is because they all other fears will seem like nothing. I believe that a fear comes from past experiences. My cousin, in about third grade, was almost kidnapped in a bakery. We were really close so she told me all about the experience. So after hearing about it I was extremly afraid of being away from my parents all 3rd and 4th grade. I wouldn't spend the night at other peoples houses or go to new places alone. However, in 5th grade, I relized that you couldnt be afraid like that, letting it control you.

Fear can be very destructive. It can make you have a bad game in sports, it can make you screw up a presentation, and worst of all act differently than if you were relaxed. I think fear comes from the mind. It comes mainly from the way you think. Ill never forget my first varsity golf match. I was almost shaking before i teed off, but as soon as i relaxed i was fine. I think that as individuals we put fear upon ourselves, when in reality its preventable. You have to calm yourself down and relax.

I think that a destructive fear is one like the shooting at Virgina Tech. I an truley afraid of that happing at our school. Or at one of my friends/families school. I think that this fear comes from our society. This thing keeps hapening. Although Lakeland says that it will never happen. I have learned that you should never say never. It could happen. What if it does. Are we prepared as a whole to be ready for this?? Some past expericences would have to Virgina Tech. They thought that it would never happen to them. And one day someone got sick of being picked on. That is what I think is wrong with Lakeland. We see what went on. We saw there faces. And yet we continue to pick on people that are different then us. I don't see how some kids make it through high school. I think that ingorance play a big part of this. Some people are so ingorant to diffenent people. They don't care if it hurts their feelings. They just care that they look cool in front of their friends. I think that is total crap. You should be the one to stick up for people. You should be a leader not a follower. I think that more kid need to be considerite of others. I see all the time kids will yell somthing hurtfull in the halls. That is how somthing like the shooting at Virgina Tech started.

I think fear is really just fear itslef. I think we are just afraid of fear. I think my only fear is failure i dont want to fail i want to succeed. failing is my only and biggest fear that i have it kills me inside because i dont want to fail i want to do good and i try hard to not let my fear take over me.

fear can be very destructive. if u think things over to much, you could reck your whole cheer dance up. If u over thought about a class presentation you could mess that up to. if you were calm, nothing could happen you know your proformance perfect, your just scaring yourself. fear comes from the mind because your tricking yourself, like in a scary movie you no its goin to be scary so if you acted llike it was fake and not real you wouldnt be as scared, but the experience of fear is sumtimes amusing. my experience, is i no my cheers left to right, top to bottom, then when we go to competition i freak out bc i get scared when i see the huge crowd, cameras, the noise...its like i blank out, but half way thru my cheer i pick it back up and stick it out.

There are many ways fear can hurt people in a negative way. First of all if some one is scared the rollercoaster might break they might do something to it to break it. Thats a little extreme but you never know. Another one is if a person is afriad there is a monster downstairs then he/she will never go downstairs. I think fear comes from past experiences and other people. First of all past experiences because if they get into a car accident then they might be scared to drive again. Also an experience for me is when i was little i saw my sister get grounded for something and i was always making sure i never did the same thing. Now fo poeple if you see them doing something bad to somebody then you won't want to go anywhere near them. Last is when some kid got into a fight and i was scared of them that they might do the same to me for ther same reason. But then i realized he wasn't that big or bad and i could take him out.

Mr.Kay,
Having fears in your life can help you because they can protect you from doing something harmful. But fears can also hurt you by maybe keeping you from doing something important or something you may regret later in life for not doing. I think that the point where fears become destructive is when people begin useing them as an excuse to do or not to do something. For example, like we talked about earlier, 9/11. Once this happened we had a big fear of not only flying but of people or the arab race. I think that our fear kept getting worse cuasing a fear of those people just because of what they looked like. An example of fear becoming destructive in my life is my fear storms. Because I have always been affraid of them and I really havent gotten over it sometimes I won't go somewhere or do something if there's going to be a storm. I know it sounds really stupid but i think that my fear has become destructive becuse it stops me from doing things that I want to do.

Mr. Kay,
I think that fear can be a pretty big thing in someones life. It does have lots of benefits, but I also think there are a couple destructive effects. A destructive effect could be you never do the thing you are fearful of. Example of which is, if you are afraid of roller coasters, you will never have the fun of a roller coaster, of if you fear commitment, you will never feel like getting married. Fear can come from many places. You could have some sort of childhood trauma to where you fear the thing in your past. Say, my parents died in a Frisbee factory, I could really fear Frisbees. Also, it can come from people. Before 9/11, every Arabic person was viewed completely normally. Now, they are looked at in fear as if every Arabic person is out to bomb you. Fear could also come from just the beginning. Just like they way you like the taste of things, you can also be born fearing things. It could come from ignorance I guess. Again, just like foods, if you are ignorant to try to eat something new, you could say you don't like it. Like, I personally have never tried tuna, but I don't want to because it is gross. So just like that, if I have never played with a spider, I may fear them. In my life, a long time ago I never wanted to ride a roller coaster because, well, I am afraid of heights, and they go high so yeah I was afraid. Now, I really like the coasters. So, all in all, fear is a weird thing that can come from many places.

Fear can be destructive because it can keep you from doing something fun or life changing. It can make you feel scared towards something when you shouldn't. Fear can come from past experiences , other people and it can also be worked up in your head. Past experiences can make you afraid to do something. For example when I was 5 I did a backward summersault in dance and I hurt myself ever since then I'm afraid to do one because of that experience. Fear can also come from other people, if someone was mean to you or not nice you might be afraid to do a certain thing. For example if you have a bully and they threaten you that they will take your lunch money than you might be afraid to go to lunch. Another place fear comes from is inside your head. People in our society sometimes get so worked up about someone or something they become afraid of it. For example the scare of Communism, people got afraid of communists and that they would take over our democracy. I think that most all fear comes from in your head. Because your mind gets you all worried about something or someone.

I think some destructive effects that fear might have on people is getting cancer, or afraid of dying. I think fear comes from what happens in your past, and ignoring to try new things, and other people. Some examples from my life would be is when my grandma got cancer and died I got scared that I would get cancer to. I am afraid of breaking another bone because when I was 7 or 8 I broke my wrist rollerblading and it really hurt. Another thing that I am scared of is getting in a car crash because their seems to be alot of car accidents especially during the winter. Some other things that I am afraid of is having another seizure attack because when I have one I can't go to school like I want to. Also, I can't play hockey, snowboarding, and I can't even get my learners permit until i'm six months seizure free.

Fear comes from the depths of our emotions. Fear itself can make one destructive, self destruct. It is the most intense and loathed feeling. The greatest and most common human fear is the unknown. Humans desire security, they desire a plan. Without a plan to follow were in chaos. Were living in a society full of apathetic citizens. All it takes is one dictator to promise security and turn this nation into a new era of McCarthyism. There are everyday reminders of our subtle fears. I claim to be afraid of the dark, but it seems I'm only terrified of the unknown. It's not the dark that scares me. It's whatever might be in the darkness. Fear can come from many different types of things, stories distilled in our minds from our youth, bad experiences, people we don't ever want to encounter. Ignorance can be a form of the unknown but i don't completely agree. ignorance is bliss. a person who fears the unknown will sit in a dark room, fearing all the possibilities of the horrid things that may surround them. an ignorant person sees nothing more than an empty dark room.

Destructive effects can make you do some stupid things that wont help your situation. I think destructive effects come from your survival instincts. For instance, if you are afraid of getting hit in a football game you might pull something illegal and then you just make the situation worse. You should've just fought your fear and taken the hit. I think these effects can come from a variety of sourcces. One major one is past experiences. An example could be if somemone had been bitten by a shark they would be scared to go back into the ocean. One of my personal fears would be dying. I just cant imagine knowing that your life will end shortly and you will see darkness.

Destructive effects of fear can enable an individual from attempting to reach their full potential.Fear comes from the idea of failing a task, it comes from negativity and danger. When I was going into 3rd grade, I heard stories about our new teacher and how he came from the army. So I thought this guy was going to be a total badass who doesnt smile. I feared that I would hate going to school because of an ex army officer was teaching my 3rd grade class. When I met him, it came to my surprise that he was one fo the nicest teachers I have ever met. The fear that he was going to be scary was that I was so sure of myself.

I dont think I left my parrents the rest of that entire trip in fear of geting left behind. I think it was my ignorance that I could go on without my parents at 7.

I think that fear is ok to a certain extent. It can prevent you from doing something really stupid, like jumping off a 100 foot cliff without any training or equipment. Although it can be good for you, it can also come to a point where it stops you from doing things you want to experience. If you are so afraid of something that it becomes an irrational fear and prevents you from completing a daily task, then that fear is destructive. For instance, if a person is afraid of the dark, and they won’t drive at night, the fear is controlling your life. I believe that fear comes from multiple different sources. First, a bad experience can make you fearful of something. For example, if you weren’t a very good swimmer when you were little and came close to drowning, you might become afraid of swimming. Fear of the unknown is also where fear comes from. If you know little to nothing about a creature that appears to be deadly, you might be afraid of it. Without knowing what the creature is, you never know if it is gentle or not. In this case, your fear could be protecting you from a bad situation. I also believe fear can come from other people influencing you. For example, the Puritans taught everyone to be afraid of sinners, because they were witches. People start to believe others if you tell them it enough, and although it is unfortunate, innocent people can get hurt because of others’ fears.

My group had this one, fear itself is a mechanism. No matter what religion you are fear has been in our evolution for our survival. Those WITH fear identified dangers to avoid. The one without fear died and the ones with fear had kids. As for all the examples you gave all of them can be sources of fear. like cutting yourself form a sharp rock happened and it didn't kill you, you know to avoid sharp rocks now because you fear pain. Fear itself is not the worst of the worst. Fear is good, it keeps us form becoming chaotic. However, you cannot let it freeze you in your tracks(freaking mages). "It is hard not to fail, but it is worst never to have tried to succeed." Roosevelt I think. The worst possible night terror I have would be zombies. They are the walking dead (family members make you hesitate) and it's freaky looking at a half-melted face.

Mr. Kay,

I think that some destructive effects that fear has on people would be a fast react. In other words, the person becomes so afraid of everything that they react to everything as if something bad was going to happen. I remember that one time my older brother (David Papenhagen) texted me asking me where I waswhen we wer at Broner's. I replied thinking that he would walk up in front of me, but no. Instead he walked up behind me really quietly and he whispered in my ear "Kill", it scared me so I whipped my arm around and ended up hitting him on his arm really hard. If he wasn't 6'1 I probably would have hit him in the face. I believe that fear comes from not wanting something to happen to you. For example, a girl doesn't want her boyfriend to break-up with them, so it becomes a fear. Something that I'm afraid of is my best friend not being my bestfriend anymore.

Some destructive effects from fear are making people anxious and making them feel outcasted. It makes people create assumptions of others. So if I say the last person to make a bomb threat was a certain race now I must create an assumption that the next person of the same race would be capable of the same thing (people make assumptions based on a persons race.) This is completely proposterous. Fear comes from one thing making someone have the reason to question the actions of something or someone. Fear usually something you dont want to happen. Society has the big fear of how the economy is bad. We fear that if the economy keeps on getting worse and if gas rises again what are we going into a deeper resession. This fear could make many people jobless, homeless, and filled with fear. Fear can cause a peron to pass judgement on others and can be destructive.

Fear is a mental part of your brain that makes you fear stuff so you will maybe be casious. I think fear comes from other people to. Like maybe there is a killer on the loose. You are afraid of death and your afraid of the killer. Fear can also come from past events. Like me, i never want to play paint ball ever again because the last time i played i got killed in the back like 8 times and it hurt really bad. So now i'm afraid to play paint ball because of past experiences.

I agree that having fear can effect you as a individual. Fear comes from your surrounding's, your environment that you have grown up with, from everyday stories. Personally, my fear comes from hearing, seeing and reading others experience it. For instance, I recently finished a boom called Dreamland. A teenage girl, just like me and others, had a boyfriend. Everything was perfect at first, until one day he hit her. After that, nothing was ever the same he kept on hitting her and hitting her. Reading that made me scared that one of my friends or myself one day will have to go through that emotional and mental pain. What I am personally scared of mostly is not knowing what could happen, but not knowing what actually will happen until I experience. Like I said previously, fear comes from everything around you. One thing that always makes me mad is when someone has enough courage to confess their fears, and people laugh "Haha, why are you afraid of that? That's so stupid." Obviously, it's not stupid to them because they have a reason to be afraid. People do, say, and believe the things they do for a reason. It's just not always what you would expect it to be, but it's something important to them.

Fear is clearly shown in everyone's lives. No one is not afraid of anything. Fear can be good and bad I think. It can be good in a way so that it keeps you from being fearless and becoming arrogant and thinking your a badass. I think fear has a lot more negative effects than positive. Fear can hold people back from putting forth their best effort or fully applying themselves. I think fear comes from past experiences such as events that occurred during your youth. Fear can also come from people and the things that go on in their life. For example, if someone is said to be a serial killer, most people that know that would stay away from them because they fear of becoming the next victim. I remember when I was younger I was in my basement and a wolf spider crawled on my arm and to this day I still hate spiders.

Destructive effects of fear are not being able to do some things and effecting others with it. An example is not trying new things or meeting new people because you're scared. Other people will be affected by that and its not really fair to them. Fear comes from a lot of places. It could be something that happened when you were little or something someone made you believe. An example of that is the whole McCarthy thing. Fear comes from ignorance too. I'm scared to swim in the deep water in the ocean and sometimes lakes. The fear comes from not knowing whats there because I can't see it. That goes back to the red scare thing because they didn't know what was going to happen and who was a communist.

some distructive effects that poeple fear would be, being killed. Or mabey the fear of not doing something right, when its your last chance to do it. I think fear comes from what you have learned, and something that you dont quite understand. Fear can come to play in so many different situtations. Another example would be I'm very very scared of spiders. I wont kill them or anything i scream and run away. Thats fear because i dont like them or even want them to be around. So many people fear different things.

Some likely destructive effects of fear are spontaneous and irrational behavior. When a person is in fear, they do not take into account what the result of their actions may be, they just act out. Also, people miss out on important things in life just because of a fear. Fear comes from a lot of different places. It can come from experiences you've had, things you have heard about it or how other people react to it. For the most part however, I think your fear is all from your own imagination. People can tell you things that can cause fear, but it is all you that causes the fear towards the situation. For example, roller coasters. Many people are afraid to ride them. Either they've road one before and were scared, have never been on one because of fear, or have never road one because of the things others have told them. Truthfully, there is nothing to fear about roller coasters, its all your imagination. When I was afraid to ride the Dragster for the first time, I found the courage to go on it, and I thought it was a lot of fun. If I hadn't went on it, I would have missed out.

Some destructive effects that fear can have on a person is panicking. I think when a person becomes fearful they panic and make the wrong decisions. I think fear comes from people not undersanding things. Your more likely to fear something that is unfamiliar than when something is familiar. Sometimes this fear leads to ignorance, like not liking someone because thier different, and you fear the kind of person they are. This leads to hatrid, fear comes from eveywhere. Some fear is just generally stored in you, when you feel threatned your fearful. But some fears you just can't help, some fears are common and some are not.

I think that if someone has too much fear of something, they might become depressed. If they get too depressed, this could lead to suicide. Sometimes if i fear too much about something, i start to feel larger amounts of anxiety. I think fear is mostly made up in our minds. Its like we fear small things, or things that are silly to worry about. I think fear can come from other people too. For example, if someone was to threaten you, or even a parent threatens to take something away if u were to get a bad grade, we work ourselves up over something that really isnt that bad. I sometimes fear of losing somethings i love, like my horse. Its the smallest things in life that mean the most to us.

I think some destructive effects can be the inablilty to think through things. This especially pertains to the consequences of violent actions. Someone who is fearful will act out of instinct and not think about what might happen as a result of certain actions. Fear is everywhere. It can come from many things including memories and past experiences, a person's surroundings, and especially the unknown. Fear of the unknown, in my opinion, is the most common source of fear for most people. For example, someone who is terrified of rollercoasters but has never riden one, is only freaking out at the thought of it, but in reality they will perfectly safe if the ride it. Another example, is placing stereotypes on people. In reality, someone could be very different than they appear, but others will make assumptions based on things they don't know about them.

Fear is destructive. It can cause you to lose trust in your friends. You can fear so much that you get stressed out. Other people may cause fear by the power they have. For example when there is a dictatorship in a country. Rumors can all so cause fear. Like the Y2K rumors that caused people to panic. As my past experience when I was 4 I was afraid of the dark because I thought that a monster would get me.

Some likely destructive effects of for example the feer of heights is if you were to be at a beautiful memorial such as the grand canyon but with the height you are at, you refuse to look at the scene. Through out my life up until about 3 years ago i was absolutily terrified to go into the corners in hockey because of the chances of getting seriously injured. While in this phase of fear to go into the corners and such i would occasionally do so but at a minimum. One time though we were in chicago on a hockey tournement and the puck squirted up my side. I quickly turned my back to get the puck, standing about 3 feet away from the boards. When i did so this kid that was trying to get me all game skated as fast as he could right at me and hit me from behind. As soon as i hit the boards face first i totally blacked out and about 20 secnds later there were tons of people all circled around me. I then was sent to the hospital for the rest of the weekend and was notified that i had recieved a minor concusion. From there on i learned to use my weight as an advantage and went into the corners quickly and fast. I now am not feered to enter the corners in hockey.

Although fear can have beneficial effects on an individual, what are some likely destructive effects? Where does fear come from? Past experiences? Other people? Ignorance? Use examples from your personal life or from society.

Mr. Kay,
Fear is both good and bad. One thing that fear is good for is it keeps people out of troubloe sometimes. They tend to not do something if they are scared of it. It is also bad tothe point that people may live in a shell their whole life. The whole point of life is to have funa nd learn from your mistakes. If you are constantly scared of life than there is no point. Fear may come from experiences that you friends have gone through or famioly memebers. Things have happend in my life that ahve kept me away from certain activities is life. I know that if someone in my family or that is close to me has had something bad happen to them doing a certain this, I will try not to do that thing that they did. This shows how fear is both good and bad to a persons well being.

Fear normally affects people in bad ways. Fear is basically a road block that people have to overcome. So it could be constructive to fear something so that you can try new and exciting things. Fear is a MInd game that your brain plays on you. Fear can be an unpleasant past time or event that you have seen or herd about or experienced. Other people and ignorance can play a large part in fear. A Quote by Marianne Williamson from the movie Coach Carter explains this well “Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure. It is our light, not our darkness that most frightens us. We ask ourselves, Who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous, talented, fabulous? Actually, who are you not to be? You are a child of God. Your playing small does not serve the world. There is nothing enlightened about shrinking so that other people won't feel insecure around you. We are all meant to shine, as children do. We were born to make manifest the glory of God that is within us. It's not just in some of us; it's in everyone. And as we let our own light shine, we unconsciously give other people permission to do the same. As we are liberated from our own fear, our presence automatically liberates others.”
Fear is a important role in my life. Without fear i would have nothing to overcome or work towards. The fear of disappointing others is one of my biggest. Not knowing what the appropriate thing to do to ensure that everyone is satisfied with what i am doing.

fear could definatly be benefical also, if your afraid to do something that could hurt you it could be a protection. some negetive affects of fear i can think of would be unsureness. for example when your afraid of a sport or activity your not as willing or confident to go do it. i think of the show fear factor, the whole point of that show was for people to face thier fears. not having to feel limited or fear things everyday was what they were affter. fear comes from the thought that if you do something it could hurt you or affect you in a negative way. if you were snowboarding and you couldnt feel pain there wouldnt be any reason to fear getting hurt.

with the infliction of fear upon others, comes the side effect that people will freak out in outrage, and in fear, they will become very scared. people will do some very freaky things when they are scared, and sometime, they will break morals to be in a state of conscious awareness. I believe, wait, i know fear comes from one very distinctive point, at least it always had come upon me in this way, and that would be when others have a leverage against me; meaning i will lose something if i do not do what i need to. or sometimes they have information against me that could be a real reputation killer.

I have many current and past experiences.

a past experience, that makes me mad ever time i see this kid, is i got in a fight with a kid in 7th grade, and i had ben in a state of fear, that if i told against him, i would get hurt even more. and ever since that happened, i have no words to describe the immense loathing i have for that despicable child.

I also have a few irrational fears. like if there is no after life. admittedly i cannot grasp how much this freaks me out at times. I do fear extremely tall heights. anything above 10 feet is very freaky for me.

i dont see any person, expect that despicable f**ker who beat me up, who was ignorant to me at all. he made no action to apologize, or ever be any nicer. i avoid all conversation with him because of it.

a recent thing that is a fear for me, and for many others i could bet, and it hits the home hard. my dad got laid off, and the fear is that i do not know what is going to happen, and it really freaks me out right now. because this very second, its my biggest fear. every one who has both parents employed, or are making the same income, have no idea how freaked out i am now. I am scared beyond all of my other fears combined. cause unfortunately, it could get a lot worse.

on the rebound though, we are all being positive though, and looking at the bright sides of it, like how my dad can do a lot more things around the house right now. which is a plus, cause just today he helped clean my room. which wouldn't have happened unless actions on friday had not happened.

some destructive effects of fear are if you are to affraid to try new things. If you are to scared than you won't change as a person you will be the same your whole life. Fear i think comes from failure. I know that my number one fear is failure but that doesn't hold me back grom trying new things. I think fear can also come from being affraid of not fitting in. I know that i was affraid that i want gonna fit in with the older kids in basketball. I still kept trying my hardest in practice and i think that i have gained some respect from the team.

I'm personally afraid of clowns. the other thing I am afraid of would have to be large snakes. Their really fast and could bite you with their fangs. I also used to be afraid of the water. One summer when I was 6 my friends mom took us to the water park and we went in the wave pool. She lost track of me and i got sucked under and was panicking.

Mr. Kay;
we talked about this after class but my internet was shut off and i just got it back. you said it was alright for me to come home and do them all.

Fear can cause a person to lose thier mental strength. It could potentially ruin someones life. I think people can install fear in people. The most common ways a person makes someone fear them is through threatning or intimidation. Past expiriences have a huge effect on fear. If someone expiriences something in thier past, it may haunt them the rest of thier lives. Like for example, i dealt with a hell of a lot of screaming growing up. My parents fought, and even though i ajusted, to this day people screaming at each other or at me sets something off in my head. Or if a child gets attacked by a dog they may fear dogs thier whole life. Fear can really change a person, but if we learn to face it we can overcome it.

Some destructive effects would be if your scared to do something then you could be missing out on something you reall good at or like to do. advantages would be for example, your friends pressuring you into smoking when your scared to. this could help you in the long run. fear i think comes from some times you parents or friends and there past experences causing you to be scared. One example would be my parents being scared to go on roller costers. When we went to ceder point i didnt want to go on any rides because my parents feared them. so i followed and was scared also.
