I enjoyed the presentations from today and look forward to more tomorrow. Remember, do not read from PowerPoints and slided should only have 15-20 words max on them. Try and keep presentation to about 4-5 minutes max as well.
A reminder to 6th hour and some new information for 5th hour: Friday's blog will deal with the idea of "paying it forward" or doing a good deed with the hopes that the next person will as well. You must do something for someone else this week that makes their life better and on Friday we will discuss this in the blog.
For today, respond to the following:
What does stand and be counted mean to you? You may use a personal experience to explain.

I believe that this saying means that you should stand up in the world. It could also mean that you should take credit and responsibility for your actions. If you are a person that just hides or is quiet, you won't get recognized. People who are the most successful in life are loud and outgoing. I think that people shouldn't just hide and stay away from the world. I think that everyone should be noticed. I think that it could also mean that everyone has a purpose in life. However, it is up to that person to fulfill it. No one should be overlooked because they weren't the shining star. For example, in soccer, many of the people who get the assists are overlooked while the goal scorers get all of the glory. The people who get the assists are just as important because if they weren't there to assist the goal, thhe goal would have never happened.

To stand and be counted means that like your voice is heard along with everyone elses. Stating your opinion and it being heard. When peopole talk like to people they dont want to just be talking to a wall they want you to hear what they are saying. for example this blog is a good example of this. We are letting our voice be heard. We are stating our opponions on the blogs. And who reads them are hearing what we think.

Mr.Kay,
Stand and be counted could mean a few things. First off when you first gave us this blog I thought that stand and be counted ment that everyones opinions mattered. An just like you said that when things in our life change so do our opinions, my opinion on this changed to. Now i think this means when we go off and do our own thing we sometimes get juged and catergorized as another crazy person just off in there own little world. My reason for this is when you think of someone standing you think that there doing what they want to do. An when you think about someone being counted, well theres a few ways that could be described. But in my opinion Being counted could mean be catorgorized or judged. when you put them together you get people doing what they want and being judged for it.

I think that this saying means to stand up and make a difference in the world. There are always alot of people who are shy and quiet. Those people are not as acknowlegded or recognized as of those who stand out and make a difference. I am guilty of being shy and quiet myself. People who aren't afraid to stand out are the ones that succeed. People who are shy and quiet still successful but I think it helps get you places if you stand out from the crowd. An example of this would be like you said before that you think people express their thoughts better on this blog rather than infront of you or the class.

The statement stand up and be counted means a lot of things to me. To me, it means to voice your own beliefs or opinions on a certain subject. Thats means to not hold back, but to actually participate and speak your mind. This statement also means to take credit or responsibility for your actions. If you just sit back ,and be quiet, then you wont get recognized. The people that do get recognized are the more out there and outgoing people. Also I think it means that everyone has a purpose in the world, and everyone deserves a chance at everything.
What does stand and be counted mean to you? You may use a personal experience to explain.
Stand and be counted means to let your opinion known. It's discouraging people to be silent and not express their values. stand and be counted is often used referring to voting. To express your opinion in the world. The United States is known for its freedom with democracy. democracy is based on voters. voters predict the outcome of election and topics. Everyones vote counts.

Already gave us this one but all right.
"Stand and be counted" can mean many different things depending on the view you take as an individual. You could take the easy way out of thinking and making that statement literal. If your more like me you will try to understand the meaning behind it. I think that it means we the people are always being told what to do and we do it. If the government says we need to pay more taxes, we pay more taxes. Or from a personal point of view, when we are in elementary school we are always being told what to do. We hardly make choices for ourselves when we are little and the adults make them for us. In the end i think this will be our downfall to academic achievement, to much hand holding.

Stand and be counted has a little bit to do with non-conformity. Usually in class, some people know the answer to a question but don't want to raise their hand because people will think they are a dork. It means to be noticed with the ideas or opinions you propose. Sometimes I feel embarrased in class to speak up because everybody turns around to look at me but if I don't then people will think I'm some dumb blonde that can't think. I'm not! haha. So you should stand up and be counted to be different and show your own personality and express your thoughts. Do something different for the sake of being noticed and say something about what you think because you might change other peoples thoughts with your own.

Thats a tough question. to me, it means taking responsibiltiy for yourself. Taking things into your own hands. you cant just sit back and wait for things to happen for you. personally i sometimes will just watch things happen and it might work out fine but its way better when you take control on the situation. you definatly get more satifaction when you do something for yourself. like when you watch things develop that you put into action.

To stand i think means to stand up against something.Like if some body of people did something and taking a stand by ating out or reacting.I think its sort of like my dads old stories he tells me.When he was on strike for the detroit free press hetook a stand.Maybe he didnt choose the best action in this stand forewarning. In the strike they had popped car tires to the free press and other acts of "rebellion".I think this shows one view of a stand.Being counted is like your a part of something like when you count as a quarterback.Your with a group of quarterbacks. So this is almost like a claasification of conformity to me.If I was counted as another kidwith blue eyes there are thousands of others with blue eyes.

To stand and be counted i think it means that everyone matters. That no matter who you are, you always want to count. That if you do some think good in life you will count and be apart of something. No one wants to be left out nor to be unheared. I dont think that if you dont no anything or anything to be heared you wont be counted. There has to be thing that sets you aside from everyone. To stand and be counted means that everyone cares and wants to be counted for.

Mr. Kay,
Stand and be counted can mean a lot of diffrent things. The main thing is to be heard and to take credit in whatever you do in life. If you have an opininion or expression let it be heard. Too many people are afraid of what other people say or think. The whole purpose of our country is freedom of speech and freedom to express yourself. One of the biggest examples of this is the presedential election. You hear a lot of people complainng and then you ask them if they voted and they say no. They should express their opinion on who they think should be president.
Stand and be counted to me means doing something that has an impact on people that they take note of you. It could be doing something that is dangerouse, or something simple. An experience I had was something as simple as picking up trash. In 8th grade, during passing time a kid in front of me kicked garbage out in front of him, so while I passed it I simply picked it up and threw it out. The vice princible saw me do this and semmed very happy. I had no idea doing something so easy could get me noticed. Something I think that standing and be counted connects is with paying it foward, because if you do a good deed for someone, that will remember you because you did something nice for them and were recognized, otherwise you stood and were counted.
Sean Detas
I belive that stand and be counted means that you stand up for what you belive. Even if you are the only one you tell our opition. If you don;t think its right and you don't say something then you arn't being counted. Standing up for what you belive is important and is wha tkeeps our country going. Without people speacking about something nothing gets changed. In a court case sometimes it has to be all the same thoughs and if one person says something then they cant go any farther. Saying something is better then saying nothing in my opition.

Mr. Kay
I think that stand is to be herd and tell what you think, make a diference. And to be counted means to acually have effect and have people listen to you. They pretty much mean the same thing. To stand could be to stand up for you rights and believe in what you believe in. To fight for you rigths. For example when martin luther king boycoted many things and did marches. But to be counted people are just listening and they reconise you.
What does stand and be counted mean to you? You may use a personal experience to explain.
Stand and be counted, to me, means many things. It means that you should be able to have your own standing on things. To have something that you believe so that you're not just another person in the crowd. Or it could mean that you should stand out. That you should be yourself and not what other people think you should be.To me, it's clearly saying that if you don't be yourself, you won't be counted as an individual. But as a follower of a group who let's other people make decisions for them. That's what stand and be counted means to me.

to stand and to be counted almost expalins itself. to me it means to stick up for what u belive in. to not back down when others have different opinions. to not be afraid to take credit for your belifes even if others disagree. this situation happens a lot.
sometimes when people i know say they don't like one of my friends and they don't have a good reason, i still stick up for my friend and say that i like them. most of the time you can make them change their views a little bit and understand the person better.

You know Mr. Kay that you already asked this question. Gust telling you that.
I think it means to sand above the crowd and be an individual. Every one stands out from the crowd in there own way. Like when I played tennis over the summer I liked it when I took bike rides instead. When my family and I took the trip to Florida we went to Fort Sumter and to Kennedy Space Center in steed of going striate to our relatives and to Disney World. Also the summer before the last one instead of taking a Caribbean cruse we did a trans Atlantic cruse. When we were at Twelve Oaks mall we decided to get a dog.
Hey Mr.Kay i realized we have done this one but i will still do it....
There are many ways i look at this. One thing i interperate this as is don't let other people decide your life. Or if everyone is doing something that you think is bad don't follow them and turn into a leader. Also, if you arent sure about doing something don't do it and fall into peer pressure in any ways just wait for some real advice. Plus just be yourself which really plays into all of what i said in one way or another. Another thing is help people out when needed. For example if you think some one that is a good person is going to do drugs and fall into peer pressure then halp them out. Also, have an influence on there life don't just be "that kid in his class" make yourself" a person to him.
I think stand and be counted for means that you don't follow the crowd. That everyone is sitting and you stand up and speak your mind. Or it could mean the opposite. It could mean stand with everyone else and you will be rewarded for that. If you didn't stand you would be fround apon. It could be like school too. If you are there you are counted as present. If you arn't there you are counted as absent.

The first time that I saw this phrase, I thought that it meant that you should just stand in line and be counted. I thought that it was saying to live life like a roll call - only saying something when you are called on. After I looked at it more though, I started to think about the stand part of it. Just being counted has a very different meaning than standing and being counted. Just being counted I think is representing what my original thoughts were. Standing up and being counted though tells us to stand up for what we value. It tells us to be a part of society and let your opinion be counted and heard. Standing up and being counted is what we should do every chance we can. If we allow others to look over us, nobody will ever hear what we have to say. So we should not be afraid to tell what we hold to be real and true. Along with this though, we need to make sure to allow others to speak, because we do not want to only have one perspective or view point on an issue.

To me to stand up and be counted means to let your voice and opinion be heard. You don't sit back in the crowd but "stand up" and let others know what you think. A person does not worry about what others think about your opinion. They are brave enough to let others know what they think. Also, they do not need to be told to speak up but put forth the incentive themselves. In my opinion these people are the leaders today because they are the first to stand up for what they belive in. There are many scenarios where I have or can stand up and be heard. One example is just saying no to what you think is wrong. Another way is expressing your thoughts on the matter. A good example of this is voting in the presidentail elections.
I believe that "stand and be counted" means to state your opinion and have it heard and respected by others. It means that when you have an opinion, to share it with people. It could also be like, don't follow the crowd. A lot of people don't do this in class. Like they might be embarrassed to raise there hand, or they just don't feel like it. I usually don't, When I have an Idea or an answer to a question I usually don't like to speak up because I don't want to sound stupid. Or like, if a person is with there friends and they all want to go to the mall, but you want to go to the movies. If you where to not speak up then you could be stuck doing something you don't want to do... Or something like that.

O-M-G. I did my blog. :D
I'm so proud of myself.
I deserve a gold star.
I believe this means to be noticed in life. This may also mean do our best. I think its saying do something in your life and make it worth it. Doing nothing in life would mean notbeing reconized. People are counted for doing good things. People may also be reconized for bad things...its just about being remembered. If yo lived your life well and were counted you most likely did good things and loved the world. This is what being counted means to me.
Stand up and be counted for means to me, to voice your opinion and be heard. Many people always have such great things to say, but are always afraid of what will happen. Personally, I think that people should take more chances in this world. I know that I certainly need to. Many times I have sat in class always wishing I could say something that I think really could of helped the matter, but I'm always scared that I will be wrong. Really there is no wrong answer when you voice your opinion. Stand up and be counted it's like sticking out from a crowd. Being an individual, like Chris was in "Into the Wild". People you are not stand and counted for are people you are always hiding, scared to see what will happen in the future. I'm not saying this is a bad thing, everything has there own way's of doing things. I believe that everyone has a reason on this earth, so why not try to uncover the secrets? Instead of waiting for it to find you. Like this quote at my dad's work "Go swim out to the ship, don't wait for it to come to the dock." This is kind of what stand and be counted means to me.

to me stand and be counted means don't just stand there make your presence count. If your going to believe in something then stand up for it make your self For an example if you believe in stoping global warming, just don't talk about it. Make a change go out and tell people about Global Warming. People think that just because you say you believe in something, does not always make it true. You have to prove to people that your matter counts. So i believe that stand and be counted means don't just say something is important to you go out and prove it. Because if you didn't prove it then it would just be more words spoken and never put to action.
'Stand and be Counted'.
'Stand for what you think is right, or what you believe in.'
I don't have many situations that I actually spoke up when my opinion was needed, and when I did, it was always some sarcastic remark. I'm too much of a coward to stand up for what my interests are.
voting for class president? I don't vote for the best looking guy in the race(like every other girl in the school), I choose someone with good ideas, who can lead. I only do that because I can't do any of those things myself. I wouldn't even DREAM about being class president, even if the world cheered my name. I don't find the 'awesomeness' of having people looking to you for advice and ideas on school functions. Only because I normally, never attend. So that would be a waste of an election. *shrug*
My voice is so quiet that when i try to yell, I am ignored.

I think stand means to stand up for what you think is right and what you believe in. You dont wanna just sit in the back of everyone and not say a word when you think something todally different from them. You should be able to speek up and say what you think too. You should also believe in your self. Its your life so stand up for it and what you think is right. Be and individual and do your own things. You should care what other people think about your oppions and believes. To be counted is to be an individual in many different ways. Be counted as a person for doing things your way not the way that people tell you.
o yeah and you already did this one as i noticed from other people saying. but alright (:
To stand and be counted to me means means to be a person who expresses their thoughts and doesnt sit in the corner and be quiet. I think this kind of person is the person who isnt afraid to speak up and will express their fellings. This person might also stand up for a friend and help them out. Everybody, in my opinion, should be hurred and should express thier thoughts. Those people who dont choose to do that are just hurting themselves. You need to express your thoughts to be successful in lifeor you can just be the one who doesnt care. I think everyone should be heared and let us know their thoughts and ideas becasue it will make us all better in the end.

Stand up and be counted means that you stand up and state your beliefs. It means you express yourself for what you believe. Also, your not worried about what others will think of your beliefs. Once, when my friends started to drink, i told them that i wouldnt drink because i was underage. If i was to get caught, it would mess up part of my life. So overall, i think its not a risk worth taking. Martin Luther King jr. stood up for his beliefs. Its sad that he got shot because others wouldnt accept ones beliefs.

This saying means that you stand up for what you believe in and you fight for it. Let other people hear your opinions and don't let others walk all over you, stay with your thinking. It could also mean that you take responsibility for your actions and are a good citizen. To able to stand up and be counted you shouldnt just hide , be outgoing and let people see what you can do. Some people might not know you have a talent just because your shy. An example of being counted is , in sports you see the person who scores a goal or a point etc. but you never really hear the name of the people who helped that person score. In hockey i play defense so i don't score much but make a lot of passes to help other people score , but the person who score gets all the credit.

Mr. Kay,
To stand and be counted means to have no fear of what everyone else thinks. It means to stand for what you believe in, not to back down from what you believe in just because your afraid of what everyone else will think. Who cares! The only thing that should matter, is what you think. Don't be afraid to say and stand up for what you believe in, who gives a crap what they think. If they don't like it then you should tell them "Oh go cry about it". Heck that's what I would say.

What does "to stand up and be counted for" means that if you have an issue that you need to speak up. Some people said that they hated bush at the 2004 election. Most people wanted him out of office. But they didn't vote so he got back in office. It can also mean that you are out spoken. Most people don't like me because I a m a very outspoken girl. Most people call me a female dog but that is because they wish they had as much courage as me. If I see a problem of an issue i am the first one to tell you that you need to change it. I think that everybody need to speak up and not care what you think. Going back to the election if people would speak up and do what they say they will do then nobody would complain. I think that would never happen. That is why my society was you have the right to express you opopon without getting judgeed. That would be my perfect world. Another thing is that not alot of kids think that being outspoken is a good thing. I think that we need a lot more kids like that in our society. Because we are the future of our country.

Mr. Kay, I'm pretty sure we've already answered this but...
Well, I can think of a couple ways to answer this question. This phrase can mean several things to me. It can be an example of transcendentalism or it can be the total opposite. To stand up and be counted can mean that you acounted for something significant in society. You contributed something and therefore makes you count as an important person. People recognize you as an individual with good ideas. However being counted can also mean that you are just another face in the crowd. You just blend in with eveyone else. You haven't really done anything special, but you are a person so you need to be counted for. Overall, you can look at this in many ways.
Okie dokiee...
I think this means that you should stand up and make your voice be heard. You don't have to be a certain age to show what you believe in. People that willing to learn, and speak up do great in life, i'm not sayin the quiet ones don't the louder ones just get noticed more. This discourages being quiet and shy. im happy the united states is democracy, everyone has a voice in votin.
So, when we were younger, lets say...uhhh elementary skool, the teachers would be like "children color in the lines". thats to boring now that were "young adults" we can color outside of the lines and hav a voice..

This Statement i feel means if something no one else does but you do you should let them know you do that and be proud of it. A example i think that would fit this is when i didnt do my homework right. I really didnt understand the question and i did all of it wrong. So when the teacher asked me why i didnt do it right i just told here i didnt get it and just couldnt do it. I solved this problem by just asking her for help and the next time i had homework i knew what to do and exelled from then on. this is what i did to stand and be counted for. Thats what i thinj that aphorism means to me.

Mr. Kay,
Although you already gave us thisone I will answer it anyway...
Being heard means giving my opinion in some way to help the people around me. I love to spread my opinion, as you know. Being heard makes me feel like I can make a difference in other peoples lives. I want to be heard not just for me. For eaxample, in 6th grade my class mates and I were trying to get repeal a rule about homework. We went to our teachers and tried to prove that we had a valid legitament reason for this arguement. I was one of the people who did most of the talking and tried to get this changed for me and my firends beause I knew it was important to them also, not just me alone.
Megan Fraser 6th hour
Everyone says they've already written this but its my first time. I think it's the only one that I didn't do.
I think that stand and be counted means to make your own footprint in the world. So many people are trying to be like someone else and are forgetting who they really are while doing it. When you have your own point of view and have the courage to express it that is standing and being counted. I have been in this position many times in my life. Usually I speak my mind in arguments with my parents. They may not like it, but it is me expressing my thoughts and everything going on in my head. People who aren't afraid of getting rejected because of their beliefs and values are usually admired by many people.
To stand to be counted means to be as your voice is being heard, with everyone elses. For example your opinions or thoughts. I also think it means you should take responsibility for your actions, and take credit for what you do. Sometimes when we go off and do our own thing, we get judged. If you just remain quiet for something you have done well, you wont get recognized for your work. When we were younger we didnt really make decisions on our own. We were always being told what to do. We never really had a say in anything. We did what we were told to do and that was it. in other words saying something, and standing up for what you do is better than nothing.

I think this expression " stand and be counted " can be interpreted in many ways. I think of it like the example we used in class today about the cows. The cows are being counted in the peen and then they will be slaughtered. I fell that this expression is telling me what to do. Although it is okay to take directions I feel people should have there own thoughts in any situation. I also thought about the position of a jewish person in the holocaust and how they were striped of there individuality. I don't think i could live if i didn't have the choice of voicing my opinion. This is like when your in the Army they break down your individuality and try to make everyone similar. For example shaving there heads and making them march in lines and such strict rules. Hence the slogan Army of one.

I think it means stand for what you believe in. Like you should show what you care about and enjoy. Also it could be used to hold you responsible for things you do. Like if someone asked my if i play guitar I would say yes. If they asked if I was good i'd probably say im a ok at playing the guitar. Instead of saying im good or horrible. it may also be used to stand up for your intrest and they way you act or dress may not represent that.
And I think we already did this one.

Mr Kay,
I think that it could mean a couple things, depending on how you look at it. It could sound like a good thing. It could mean let your voice be heard. It like be there and be counted and the counted part could be hearing someone. It it like its telling you to be different or heard. In my opinion, it seems like its telling us to conform. It reminds me of the demands on the Holocaust or something. Stand and be counted reminds me of people standing in rows learning to be the same as others. It's like were being told what to do and who to do it with. Its really weird. It might be wrong but this is how I think of it.

Stand and be counted could meen many different things to many different people. To me "stand and be counted" meens to voice your opinion, and not just follow what everyone else says. Stand and be counted is a very important right now because of the election. I think that im a person that follows this saying, because i don't like to follow what people say unless I agree. I don't agree with many of my teachers about who should be president. The only bad thing is I have to wait until next election to stand and be counted. I also think that just because you agree with someone doesn't meen you're not following this saying. I think that most students in my class think that because we're learning about individualism, means we shouldn't listen to anyone one. This isn't true though because we are still listening to Mr. Kay and I agree with most of the stuff he says but i'm still an individual. This meens I can still stand and be counted.
You have already had given this one.

But as it seems I cannot go back that far and copy because my account was deleted and replaced because of the stupid password. so I'm going to be original.
To stand and be counted is to stand up/out and get noticed. You cannot be functional or even have a good job. If you do not stand out will your employer even consider you? No, never if you just seem run-of-the-mill. To not stand out is to not exist. Think about it...if someone died and no one had any proof or any body, did they exist? If so can you prove it? Not only "stand and be counted" a good quote and model it is necessary to everyone! You cannot just become un-noticed, For it is frightening! Nothingness.

I think that stand and be counted means to do what everyone else is doing. To do something routine and generic that everyone else is doing. I think this is doing what everyone else is doing. I think that this really goes against the ideas of transcendentalism. So far, in my life I have had very few experiences with this. I think one of them is when you had that teacher in elementary school who always told you to quit imagining things and asking so many questions. However in life, this is shown in countries that are dictatorships. The dictator wants to control everything, and have all of the people think the way be does. This is trapping the minds of people who no longer have opinions or ideas. This is keeping them blank and stagnet in society. Treating them like people who should just "stand there and be counted for."
i know about paying it forward mr.kay, i saw the movie, and i understand its concept, and i love it, if only people had the goodness in their hearts to continue it.
anyways, agreeing with deters, we did this already, but we also have changed our ideas, and i believe this must be re answered.
i believe that to stand and be counted on, means that, when you take the high road, and do something for the greater good, you should be counting on yourself to stand upon your beliefs, and support them.
it could also mean that, when you stand up and choose to do something, your being counted on to complete your counted upon duties.
with many other meanings which i could think of, those 2 have affected me the most. I stand up and choose to go the higher road on many things, because i know they are bad for me, or its something stupid to do. and when i choose to stand up and say no, i stand upon my beliefs, and stick to them.
i also stand up and do the duties other don't commit to at times, and i fulfill them, so at least they are done. in reality though, and this is where i become super rude, not a lot of people stand up to their beliefs as much as i do, and it makes me wonder why people don't stick up for themselves more.

Stand to be counted for means to let you voice be heard and be counted for meaning, being respected. Also it could mean taking in consideration your responsibilites and respecting them. It also could stand for doing someone a good deed or a favor. A personal experience i have had in my life was going into work on a busy day with out being asked. I was being considerate and doing a good dean and having responsibilty for my job and taking advantage. Another Personal experience would be respecting my parents and saving my money for a car and not having them pay for my wants and needs. Everyone gets accounted for and reconised when they stand to be counted for.
I think that stand and be counted means several things. It could first of all mean that you should take the blame for all your actions. You should also take responsibility for all of your actions. It also means speak what you think. Don't be the shy guy in the back. People will greatly appreciate this. I take blame for my actions. ex. When I got caught skipping I admitted to it and I served my detentions.

What I think stand and to be counted mean is to always believe in your self. Like if a friend is going to do something bad like break a rule and he or she wants you to come with them but you don't think it is right you should say no. To be counted means is to never let somebody feel left out. Like when working on group projects you want to make sure everyone has something they want to say. When I think something is wrong or I get in trouble for something I didn't do I stand up for myself. In hockey everyone is counted but if that person feels left out then that person should say something. Thats what I think stand and to be counted for means.

This is really late but ill still do it. Stand and be counted means to me that your opinion is said. You make people listen to what you say. Not to let people walk all over you. Such as when in elementry school we needed to vote on a movie one time. Everyone wanted something different. I added my opinion and it turned out people thought it was a good idea. It's important to stand up and be heard or good ideas will be missed.

Along with this though, we need to make sure to allow others to speak, because we do not want to only have one perspective or view point on an issue.
i think that this means to stand up for your rights. this may also mean to stand up for what you belive in. also to make your voice herd for a cause that you belive in. to be counted on to me means to be dependable. this also means to be there when somone needs you. And not to let them down. i also belive that taking a stand means to do the things you belive in and let them be heard.

To stand and be counted means to be heard. Dont hide amongst the crowd and be afraid to make a difference. Theres no dumber question the the one not asked. Dont be afraid to show what you know, and be confident in doing so! Take me for example. People may think im a wee bit weird, strange, and/or insane, but hey. At least i do what i can to keep the world an interesting place and keep those closest to me happy, right?
