Day 27

There seem to be many similarities between Chris/Alex, Mr. Keating, the boys in "Dead Poet Society," Thoreu, and Emerson. Please discuss how some or all of these people follow the ideas of transcendentalism with examples.

Mr. Kay,

I think that they all are transcendetalists to a point. They all have their own beliefs about certain subjects of life. I think that the boys arent as much as chris and emerson because mr. keeting influenced their beliefs somewhat because he gave them advice about how to go about living life to the best. They all refused not to go with the crowd and do what they so choose. Chris didnt want any help from anyone on how to learn, while the boys welcomed the help from Mr. Keating and appreciated help. They also wanted to build relationmships with other people, which was the totally opposite of what Chris wanted to do.

I think that they are both transcendetalists. They all have their own ideas about certain things in life. I dont think that the boys in the dead poets society arent as much like chris because it was mostly mr.keating that gave them their ideas. The boys were individualist but not as much as chris was. Mr. Keating was more of a individual. He had his own way of teaching his class and i think the students liked his way of teaching better. chris was and individual , he went out in to the wild by himself.

Mr. Kay,
As you said there are many similarities between these people. Chris/Alex and Mr. Keeting have a few similarities. Both men like todo things their own way. Mr. Keeting didn't follow the book, as most of the teachers did. And Chris/Alex went into the Alaska with few supplies while others would go with many supplies. Chris/Alex and Neil Perry also had some smilarities. They both wanted to disobey their parents. Neil did acting when his father said not to, and Chris/Alex wouldn't take their advice for anything.

All of these men show transcendentalism at one time or another. Chris/Alex shows non-conformity quite a bit throughout the book. He had his own thoughts and beliefs on how society should act. For example, he wanted people more focus on truth, rather than focusing on materialistic items. He also did things the way he wanted them to be done. He hitchhiked out to Alaska, ill-equipped, and no one could persuade him to stop. Mr. Keating had shown transcendentalism through his teaching style. While all the other teachers followed curriculum, Mr. Keating taught the way he thought he should. He brought transcendentalism to his students. He taught them to follow their heart, go for their dreams and to believe in themselves. The boys in the dead poet’s society had never heard of this before and Mr. Keating was the man who brought individualism into their lives. Thoreu was one of the individuals who lead Chris/Alex to go off on his expedition. Thoreu did not agree with what society was doing, so he went off so he could express his discontentment for the way society ran. Emerson also expresses the idea of transcendentalism. He shows individualism through his thoughts on how government should play its role in society. He also expresses the need to have civil disobedience when you feel something is not right.

Chris went out lived off th wilderness and just left everything. This shows that he s his own values and wont conform. He has different views on money, parents, and relationships.Mr.Keeting teached in a very different way he taught the boys how to be themselves by doing stuff outta the ordinary such as ripping books and standing on the desks. He followed the ways of his own method and tried to create transcendentilism in the boys. The dead poet society used carpe diem.Like when Knox went for the girl he liked. Also when Neil disobeyed his dads orders.

I think they are all similar because they all speak of transidentelism.
Chris and The Boys tried to live a transedental life. Mr. Keeting and Thorue buth teach how to live a transcendental life. Like Neal, he tried to live that type of life but failed. He hated the facted of his life being lad out infront of him and him not haveing a say in it. He hated it so much to kill himself. Chris triede to live that tpye of life and also failed too. It seems to me that people who try to live a transendental life to the fullest they end up dead.

All of these men show transcendentalism. Chris/Alex shows it by doing whatever he wants, they way he wants it done. Once he decided to go on his journey to Alaska, his mind was set and there was no turning back. For example, in the nook when Wayne asks him to work for him longer and Chris/Alex says no he has to be on his way by a certain date. Mr. Keating is also another example of transcendentalism. He also has his own way of doing things. Many of the other teachers thought that he was simple insane. On the very first day on school, this first thing Mr. Keating had them do was rip out the introduction. The students were confused by his unique teaching skills. He thought his students to always follow there dreams, it will lead you the right way in life. Another man who shows us transcendentalism is Thoreu. Just like Chris/Alex he did not agree with society, and he showed Chris/Alex his journey. Emerson also shows this how, pretty much just standing out from the crowd. Having his own opinion about the government, and being an individualist.

Mr. Kay,

I believe that they are all transcendetalists in there own way. I think that Chris and Neil share the same bond when it comes to the relationships that they have with there parents. I don't think that all of the boys from "The Dead Poets Society", share the same bond as Chris. I believe that Mr. Keeting is the total opposite of Chris. Chris did not want any help becoming who he wants to be in life, but on the other hand, Mr. Keeting was all for becoming who you want to be in life, even if that ment having help fom someone else. The boys from "The Dead Poets Society" were always in some sort of relationship, whether it was with friends, or with teacher's, or with family. While Chris wanted to avoid being in or getting in, any relationships.

They all showed transcendistim. Alex/chris was truly an individist. He acting apon what he thought was the right thing for him to do. he had his own ideas and he new what he had to do. Mr.keeting was an indivualist he has his own way of teaching and he taught the boys how to stand out and told them its okay to be an idivdualist. He did what was right and has hiw own idea's and shared with his class. Alex/chris told out and wanted to be on his own with no help from anyone he just wanted to do things on his own. The boys really didnt think own there own they had mr.keeting to help them along the way.

all these are very similar. cheis/alex follows the ideas of transcendntilsm by his roaming of the u.s. and most importantly his going to alaska. mr. Keatings transcendntilsm is less extreme but he still shows it when he has his kids rip those pages out of his book and stand on the desks. the boys in the dead poets society get themselves into alot more trouble with their transindentalism. the one actor kid comits suicide and the other gets in big trouble with the school. also like you said today in class emerson is lighter with his writing but thoreu really goes indepth with the topic. so all are great examples of transindentalism its just how the pepole show it.

I believe all of these people are transcendentalists. Chris/Alex is because he disobeyed society by not following society's rules or values. Alex/Chris didn't care to seem what society thought, in fact i thought he was rebelling against all of it. Mr. Keating was a transcendentalist because he taught his students in the way he thought was most successful. He wanted to help them think for themselves, instead of telling them what to think. Mr. Keating's students were somewhat of transcendentalist because yes, they were thinking for themselves, but it was because Mr. Keating told them to do so. Thoreu was a transcendentalist because he changed how society would be run. Instead of letting the government control everything he peacefully protested his beliefs. Emerson was a transcendentalist because he believed in satisfying your own wants and values.

these people are all transdendentalist. they are all going on there own and trying new things. Chris/Alex is getting away from people. He is trying to get away and better his life. He doesn't want all the civilization and just wants to be free. The same thing with Thoreu and Emerson. They are trying to get away and live a better life. The think the same thing as Chris/Alex does. The dead poet society kind off did the same thing. They wanted to break away from the tradition and do something that wasn't planed out for them. Mr. Keating helped them change and start the dead poets scioty. All of these people were transendentalist and did something different than the others.

Thoreu is defiantly a transcendetalist because of his different ideas about government. Chis are also transcendetalists. His whole idea on life is. Going to Alaska and doing his own thing. He thinks completely different from society, not wanting to be like them. Living in the wild with practicly nothing. Mr. Keating teaches completely different from all the other teachers. He wants the boys to open their minds. That's unlike the other teachers who just want to cram facts into them. Some of the boys also turn out to be transcendetalists by going against their parents and thinking that they want to do something completely different. Such as being in a play or having the highest power job.

Mr. Kay,
In some way all of these people are transcendatalists. Chris/Alex doesnt agree with society and likes to do things on his own. Likewise, Mr Keating doesnt agree with the ciriculum at the school. He doesnt think that the kids can learn effectively by the book. In some ways I agree with him. Throue was one of the individuals who inspired chris to go off on his own. He was an author who wrote about trancendatalism. He doesnt always agree with society. Finnaly, emerson is a transcendentalist because he expresses his thoughts on the roles of government and civil disobedience.

Chris went against the rules just like the boys did. Chris just took it too far.

All of these people have been a part of transcendentalism or have had a part of it in their lives. I think that McCandless is a very big transcendentalist. His wants to do everything on his own. He gets his own ideas in his head and sticks to them. Emerson and Thoreau are both like McCandless. But, however I think that the boys in "dead poets society are somewhat different. I think that Tim Wilson described this great. That mr. Keating seemed more as the transcendentalist in the story. But however I think that they also took some of this to a different extent. They themselves were the ones to follow through with the "dead poet society.". So they were somewhat transcendentalists themselves.

All these people are transcendentalists to a certain extent. To start off Think Chris/Alex is a huge transcendentalist because he always thinks for himself, and does whatever. He always sticks with his thoughts, and never cheats himself. I also think Emerson and Thoreau are similar to Chris/Alex. I really like what Chloe said about Mr.Keating and the Dead poets boys, yes Mr.Keating was a huge transcendentalist but he tought his students to be like that, so the students thought for theirselfs, but they started doing this because he told them to. Everyone is similar though, they all have their own thoughts and beliefs.

In transcendentalism Emerson started to move away from religion and started a new thought movement. McCandless had this big idea that material objects were not needed to go through life. Both McCandless and Thoreau had somewhat of an idea of civil disobediance because Thoreau wrote an article about it. McMandless said that he didn't need government to tell him what to eat when someone asked him if he had a hunting liscense. Mr. Keating started a new way of teaching even though he was to follow by certain rules and be very strict about everything he had the kids stand on desks and rip the prolouge out of their book. Neil Perry decided that if he couldn't live life the way he wanted then he wasn't going to live and shot himself. They each had their ideas about how to live and each transcendentalist didn't live the way everyone else was or what was decided for them.

By this i mean he doesn't go by all the other poetry teachers in the school. Another one is the boys in "dead poets society". They basically do what ever they wanted to. I mean making a club, not listening to there parents that much and many more. A specific example of this is when the boy that still does the play when his dad told him that he can't. They all strive to live life the way they want to. They all go against athority, if its the government (Thoreu) the school leaders (the boys from "dead poets society", and Mr. Keating) or society itself (Chris/Alex.) Chris wanted to figure out who he truley was, so he became a vagabond. The boys from the movie and Mr. Keating went against the rules to be who they are and find happiness. Thoreu thinks you should stand up for your rights, and what you believe in. They all have the same idea in common. They just demonstrate it in a different way, and have few differences within themselves.

With the "Dead Poets Society" MR. Keeting shows the boys how to be transcendentalists. He teaches them how to be themselves. He also shows them how to get along and start new things. For example the dead poets club.

i think that both were tranendetalist because they both had their owny beliefs. while mr. keeting did in many ways push them to be individuals, it also took alex a while to figure out that this journey was his chance to be an inydividual. also mr. keeting was a very important influence in the boys life, and chris was his own influence. i think they were both individuals and also conformed to the idea of being an transendentalist. chris also wanted it just to be him. while the boys in mr. keetings life took more joy in other people being a part of their life. for example the dead poets society was suppose to be about being different, when all in fact it just united them. that being said is not bad however. chris just wanted to be alone and plan around with his identity a little more however.

All the people listed are the same in the way that they are transcendetalists. Mr. Keating and the boys he teaches are very similar. Mr. Keating teaches in his own way and pushes his believes to the student. One way he shows this is when he tells the students to rip out the first page of the poetry book he gave them. The boys are transcendalists because they do what they want to and not what their parents want them to. An example is when Neil trys out for the school play and goes against his fathers rules. Chris does the same thing in his life with the government. He said that he could care less about the govenrments rules and what they think of him. This shows that all these people are transcendalists.

All of the people you have mentioned follow the ideas of transcendentalism. Chris/Alex shows transcendentalism through almost everything he does. When he decides that he is going to give away all of his money and leave his life behind to travel the world, he is following transcendentalism. Most people cannot leave behind their life and let down the world. Mr. Keating used his teaching techniques to be a transcendentalist. He taught transcendentalism to his students and chose not to do what the school said he had to. The boys in the "Dead Poets Society" did not conform to what the majority of students did. They chose to think diferently. Some of them chose to think for themselves rather than what their parents wanted them to. Some of them stood up to authority. They all had different ways of being a transcendentalists.

All of these people folloe the ideas of transcendentalism in one way ar anither. Chris wants to get away from society by hitch-hiking to Alska to live off the land. He even seems unready for the tasks ahead, but, equiped or not, he wanted to be an individualist. Mr. Keeting displays the ideas associated with transcendentalism by making the boys think on their own. He teaches the principles of non-comformity by making them walk their own funny way in the courtyard, for example. Thoreu shows that he wants to be an individual through his writings. He writes, for example in "Civil Disobediance" that he feels that we need to get away from the comformist ideas of governement and should be able to think on our own, to a certain extent. Emerson does essentially the same thing, except that he doesn't get right to the point like Thoreu does. All of these people show examples of transcendentalism.

Mr. Keeting bestowed much of his transcendental ideas in most of his students. this was shown when he gave Neil the Dead Poets book so they could escape the school and think for them selves. Chris follows the idea of transcendental the most. He decides to try and canoe down many rivers in Mexico to reach the ocean but that didn't happen when he ran into farming rivers. To an extent, I think that all of them are transcendentalists. Like in the movie Dead Poet Society the kids were struggling to be individuals, while being pressured to conform. The boys wanted to build relationships with other people and still show their individuality. Mr. Keating is encouraging idealism and individuality. He actually did not live completely up to what he was teaching the kids. Mr. Keating taught with other teachers that did not encourage the same teaching style, they wanted him to conform. Chris/Alex had cut himself off from the world. He tried to be a transcendentalist like Thoreau. He cut himself of from the world and made writings about what ever he felt like and spread his views though his writing.

i do not understand the question but i think that keating likes to be an indivualist and show the self providing direction. providing a direction maybe only he can follow. like chris did, when he went missing without tellin anyone. i cannot imagine how hard this was for him to not talk to family or old friends for longer than like 2 days- a week. but in a way, he made a new life and had the "Desire" to make a new life. he was honed in on a new way of life, to go in mentallity, back in time. he had the desire to prove it was possible to fight for food, and learn about natural food types, berry's, apple's, peach's etc. >alex warner 5th hour<

Between the Dead Poet Society and Chris/Alex himself i believe that these two relate in many ways. One of the biggest relations are the transcendentalism that both carry. Transcendentalism is the feeling or wanting of individualality. There are many different examples that support the theory of these two relating. One example from the dead poet society is how, in general, they all get the feeling that they shall have individual rights and freedoms from there private school. This relates to the individuality wanted by chris/alex in many ways. Chris/alex also felt the erge to not want to live the same old boring dull life. So he got the feeling that he himself would be able to make his own decisions and support himself in life. These are the two general summed up states of each story.

The similarities between these people are that they are all transcendentalists. They all believe that each person should be unique and are non-conformists. Mr. Keating lets them rip out pages in their textbooks and responding to that, Neil tries out for the play. Thoreu and Emerson write about the idea of transcendetalism and share the way they think things should be. In Civil Disobediance it says that if a law goes against your values then you can break it. Finally, Chris shows non-conformity by just leaving everything and walking into the wilderness.

They all are transcendentalist because of their beliefs. Mr Keating showed the boys how life can be without limits and people holding them back. Chris/Alex is someone who lives life to the fullest in a different way than others would expect. He enjoyed being isolated from society and their rules. The boys had the courage to find out more about the dead poets society and do something that had a new view on the world. Chris/Alex had this characteristic that if he had osmething on his mind, he would go out and do it. The boys got a little help from mr keating by finding the book in thier room.\\\

Chris/Alex shows probably the best examples of transcedentalism. He, first of all, is a nonconformist and doesn't let any influence on his ideas effect him. He ventured all the way out to Alaska by hitch hiking, getting lousy jobs, and meeting strange people in the process. This shows that he is a very independent person. Mr Keating is another great example of trancendentalism. His odd teaching styles are what really sicks out in the kids minds. He showed the boys of Welton the different prospective people can take on life. The boys of the "Dead Poet's Society" were directly related to Mr. Keating because he was the one that got them started on this idea. They wanted to see what it was like not to follow the group and think for themselves with creativity. Thoreau got Chris/Alex to get the idea in his head that he could take this expedition and survive it because it seemed as though he looked uo to him. Emerson brought this idea by government. He says that civil disobedience is what people are using to move on to the future and how we don't need government at all.

Mr. Keating influenced them to make there own choices and stick with it. Were on the other hand Chris/Alex really had no one to teach him how to voice his opinion. Therefore he had to figure out his own way of solving problems and finding a way to voice his memories. With this being said i believe that the biggest connection between these two stories would be Mr. Keating and Chris/Alex. And they have the most in common because they were both transcendentalism.

Mr.Kay,
In my opinion all of these people follow transendentalism. Chris for example shows transendentalism by going off into the wild and doing his own thing. Mr.Keeting for another example was not the regular teacher who ust went and read through the text book. Instead he tought them to do there own thing and express themselves with who they are. But I think that out of all of the people listed Chris/Alex is a very good example because he went out and did something. In his mind he thought that what he was doing was a way to change things.

Some of the similarities between Chris/Alex, Mr.Keating, and the boys in "Dead Poet Society" is that they have different ideas on things. Like Chris/Alex for example thought that going to Alaska would let him get away from all the crazy things in South Dakota. Also, Mr. Keating has different way of teaching. Like in the court yard he made the boys walk differently. The boys in "Dead Poet Society" had their different idea on things like this one boy wanted to act but was afraid that his father was going to find out. This other boy was afraid of what people might think of him when he read something aloud to the class. These are some similarities.
