Romanticism and Transcendentalism are what makes this story. In the beginning Chris has an idea to literally live his life full of adventures and little money. This crzy idea that he could do anything on his own and be okay.
This would show an example of romanticism. Transcendentalism would be his idea of his trip. He planned it exactly how he wanted it and not in the smartest way. He was very unprepared but did not seem to mind. When the man in the truck offered him boots he denied and first, but with more push from the man finally took them. He wanted to do it his own way, as an individual he thought that his thoughts were the only advice he needed.
Mr. Kay,
Both romanticism and transcendentalism are represented in this. Transcendentalism are represented when Chris doesnt really know what hes getting himself into. I mean he knows the basics about the ladn and how he is going to have to live. He just doesnt know exactly what it is going to be like when he gets to Alaska. Romanticism is represented when he refuses abojects from people. He refused to take neither money, or the bots from one of his best friends thru the whole process of his expedition.

Mr. Kay,
Trancendentalism and Romanticism are found all throughout this story. Transecdentalism is when chris was described as an athlete in the beggining. Once his father tried to make him better he totally dropped the sport and quit. Romanticism is the whole trip in general. Chris thought that he could survive on his own no matter what he did. He didnt take into effect the conditions in Alaska. Also, chris burned his money and all other supllies he had with him.

An example of transcendilism would be how how Chris decided to take a journey to Alaska and cut his ties with his family. He knew there was a good chance he could die but he still pursued his dream. If he had the right materials for this journey, the chance of him dying would have been slim. He didnt really know any basic survival skills or anything. An example of romanticism would be how Chris never wanted anything handed to him. He wanted to earn things himself and do things his way. In the book he rufused to take money from his good friend. This shows how stubborn Chris was.

Romanticism and Transcendentalsim are what makes up the story. In the beginning of Into the Wild, Chris decides to burn all of his money, and leave everything behind, to live in the wild in Alaska. That was showing Transcendentalism because he wasnt thinking about anybody elses feelings or concerns towards that decision. Also, in the beginning, it said what a good athlete Chris was, but the second his dad helped a little bit, Chris quit. This is showing Romanticism because, Chris didnt like when people told him what to do, he liked solving his own problems and didnt like when people pointed out his problems. Another example in the story is, when Chris would meet complete strangers on the street, and once he became close to those people, he would just leave. This is showing Transcendentilism because, Chris only thought about himself, and didnt care if he was hurting them by leaving.

Romanticism and Transcendentalism are defiantly themes of this story. Chris seems to have a connection with the wild. It's like he's drawn to it. When he isn't near it, he isn't happy. This is an example of romanticism. Transcendentalism is how Chris knows exactly what he wants. He wants to do it his way and won't let anyone tell him otherwise. Although many of his plans weren't well thought out, he believed in them.

Ramanticism and Transcendentalism. They make up this whole story. Throughout the whole story he goes wherever he wants to go. He doesn't take any advice from anybody. His whole trip was going to end with Alaska, where he wanted to go the most, this the Transcendentalism part. And when the girl that had the crush on him tried to give him things to help him on his journey, he just hid them in the trailer before he left. This is the Romanticism part.

Chris thought he could do anything on his own with his little money and still be okay. This would be romanticism. His trip to where ever would be an example of transcedentalism. He wasnt very prepared for his trip but to him in his mind he thought he would be okay. He wanted to show everyone he could do it and prove everyone rong. To him he thought that his thoughts where the only thing he wanted to accept and take.
Transcendentalism and Romanticism are both shown in " Into The Wild". Transcendentalism is shown when chris gives away all of him money and leaves home. This shows it because not many people would do that and hes thinking on his own. Romanticism is shown when it says chris is shown as a really good athlete in the beginning of the story. But once his father trys to help him he quits. Even though Chris loved the sports he quit because his dad tried to help and he didnt want help from anyone.

Both Romanticism and Transcendentalism are somehow represented in this story. For Romanticism, Chris is very connected to the wild. He loves nature, and loves being in it at all times. Also, that Chris would never accept anything from anyone without putting up a argument. He thought that he didn't need anything from anyone, he could live on his on in the wild. An example on Transcendentalism would be, that Chris had a dream. He went to fulfill his dream, nothing and no one could stop him. Not very many people are like that, they usually give up. That's not like Chris, when he would set his mind to something, it couldn't be changed. There were many obstacles he had to overcome as his journey went on, but that didn't stop him.

In "into the wild" it shows transcendentalism because Chris/Alex is on his own traveling and trying to survive. He leaves his parnents, which is a big step and tries to live on his own. He travels many miles and meets many new people. He also is feeding himself and finding food. Chris/Alex thinks that he is invincible and can do anything that he wants to do. I think This shows trancendentalism alot. It shows romanticism by when Chris/
alex is traveling with ni money. He thinks that he doesn't need any but later on he finds out that he really relies on money. Chris/Alex doesn't like to make and keep money when he is really good at making it.

I think in many ways Into the Wild reflests transendentalism. The biggest example is Chris. He is basciclly rebaling against everyone. Saying that he doesn't need the rules, the money, the parents. He thinks he can live on his own. Like when he leaves the people who took him in and tried to talk some sence into him. But he didn't listen. He was basicly telling everyone off.

Transcendentalism is basically what the whole story is about and what puts advendture in the story. First of all the biggest idea is Alex/Chris leaving his family friends and everything behind when he goes on this Alaskan adventure. Also when ever he meets someone new he communicates with them but does his own thing. For example when Wayne gives him the job he just goes to work and does what is asked of him. Doesn't worry about others or does what others do he just gets the job done. Plus that is the same thing at McDonalds. He does the work slow but gets it done without worry about others. Last thing that basically sums it up is he never gives up no matter what is at hand.

In many ways i felt that Into the Wild reflects ideas of romanticism and transcendalism. One thing that reflect the romanticism is when alex loses 20 pound but hes having the time of his life. I see this as romanticism because when we were in nour cirlce discusion i had brought this up. Mr kay said that that is a good example of romanticism.Romanticism is also represented when he refuses abojects from people. when chris started his adventure he burned all of his money and that i feel is a reflection of transcendalism. These are the ways i think the book Into the Wild shows transcendtalism and romanticism.

the way that alex/ chris mccandless expresses indivuasilism is mostly expressed in self-earning. he likes to earn everything he has or will soon have. he does not take kindly to hand-outs like money, free objects, and very, very few other things. he earns everything every step of the way, at least that is the way he is portrayed in this book, he is portrayed as an honorous person with high dignity. i say dignity because he does not seem to show his "Disgust" for his parents.alex warner 5th hour
Romanticism and Transcedentalism make this story what it is. Chris. Alex has this big idea of doing all these things with little money. He wants to do everyone on his own and he thinks he can with out anyones help, or no money. He found out everything he wanted to do involved money witch he didnt really have much of. I think that would be a example of Romanticism. I think his trip would show an example of Transcendentalism. He thought that he had everything he needed and he thought he would live on only what he had, but he was wrong. He took very little with him along his journey. People offered to give him things he said no at frist but after a while he gave in. Also he burned all his money that he had. He did all this to show people he can do things on his own with out other peoples help.
Both romanticism and transcendentalism are greatly used in this story.Throughout the whole story he goes and does whatever he pleases. He feels money has no value and he doesn't need it to survive. He has no idea what is in store for him when he reaches Alaska. Chris never wants anything, he feels as though he can get it himself. For examples of Romanticism, Chris is very connected to the wild. An example of Transcendentalism would be, that Chris had a dream an now he is trying to fulfill that dream.

In this book, both romanticism and transcendentalism are shown. Transcendentalism is represented where chris wants to be alone and do things on his own. This is shown when he burns his money and abandones his car, trying to do his own ideas. Romanticism is shown when he refused to take anything from people. Like when he refuses to take supplies and money from Wayne. I think that this is one of the reasons for his death. If he wouldve taken some more supplies I think he might have survived.
An example of transcendtalism in the book could be how Chris left on an adventure to Alaska and never told anyone. He wanted to take on this adventure by himself with no money, food, or help. He pretty much cut out all communication with his family and goes on forever with out hearing from them. He doesnt accept any offers for help or food from any of the people who helped him get a ride. These are some of the ways that Chris shows he is an independent individual. An example of romanticism in the book would be Chris' love for the outdoors and his realtionship with nature. He thought he could survive in it with very little help and supplies, and it cost him his life. These are just some of the examples from the two themes mentioned in the book.

Hello!
An example of transcendtalism in the book was when Chris/Alex vanishes and takes his "trip", I guess I could call it a trip. Like his idea to go to Alaska, to head into the wild, with NO food, money, supplies, or barely any help. The Romanticism of it all is how he wanted to experience all these different things, and see what he could do all on his own. He created a whole new person from scratch, and I really like selfmade people like Chris/Alex. Another transecdentalism is when Chris was described as althetic, and his dad pushed him, but then he just quit because he likes to do stuff that he likes and his proud of, not what others like.
Overall, Chris is very creative, I really like it!

The ideas of transcendentalism and romanticism are greatly reflected in this book. They are displayed by the idea of Chris/Alex leaving everything at home and going to travel the continent, literally. He has been everywhere from California to South Dakota and eventually Alaska. He doesn't like the idea of relationships and money, and wants to prove he can live off the land. A specific example is the fact that he donated all the money to charity, and even burned some more. He doesn't like the idea of relationships either and likes to think on his own. Once he makes up his mind, there is no changing it. For example, when Gallien offered him money, boots and clothes he refuses them all and decides to trek on into the wilderness, seemingly unprepared. The idea of transcendentalism and romanticism are the foundation of the novel. They greatly shape the way it is and describle the individual that Alex/Chris wants to be.
"Into the Wild" connects with romanticism because Chris makes his own way of living life. He's almost like an entrepreneuer inventing new ways to survive. He invented new ways of living that thrilled him through danger and I don't think that's a twisted form of romanticism just because it's different. It also connects to individualism because he was himself in attempting this new adventure. Although I think some of the books he read guided him a little bit in nature. But he did go out all by himself and never attemted to take things from people and discouraged people from giving him things to help him. The fact is people thought he was stupid, weird, and foolish and he didn't care because he knew he was the opposite and that's a perfect example of individualism.

he planed it out he wanted to it be. No ones help, no money nor car. Just him and the wildness. He wanted to do this own his own, without help. As if he felt his own opinions were all that mattered, and no one else.

Into The Wild is all about romanticism and transcendentalism. Chris shows this a lot when he try's to be independent. He shows this by not wanting to attach him self to his family or materiel items. He does not want to use money for everything he dose because that would take the whole point of going off on his own into the wild. He shows more romanticism when he think s he can go out in the wilderness unprepared. It is possible to survive but it is not idealistic. Chris can be so much of a transcendentalist that he ignores the cautions of being prepared. In the end the romanticism side of Chris leads to his downfall.

Into the wild deals with how he loves the beauty of nature. This is really the only thing i could pick out for romanticism. When talks about how he loves nature and when he was a young liked to go hiking with his dad. Also he showed transcendentilism by doing the things not many others had chosen. He didnt he conform. He choose not to go to college and get a house and live a "normal life."He went and lived off the land hitchhiking and doing stuff most other would and will never do.He lived the way he wanted to buy exploring the beauty of nature and living life to his way of living to the fullest. He had acheived his goals and lived by his values.

The idea of transendentalism is shown in this book through Chris's trip to Alaska. Once he had his plan set, he took off. Not only did he not tell his family but got rid of all his posseesions. But this is what made him happy and complete. He doesn't listen when other tell him he won't surive without the essentials, nor does he take anything from anyone unless he has worked for it, and even then he may not have. Chris did things his way and his way only. The idea of romantisism comes up in the book when Chris follows what he wants to do. The outdoors is where he feels most at home so that is where he went. Both transadentalism and romantisism play a role in the book Into the Wild.
Romanticism and Transcendentalism was used for most of "Into The Wild". In the book, He uses this by showing he wont accept gifts. He also shows this by burning his money and donating it too. Chris shows transcendentalism by planning his trip with bad gear. He knew he did not pack right but had no care in the world because he wanted a chalenge. He has a romanticism to living off the land and no one could change it. Thats my 2 cents on the topic.

The book "Into the Wild" shows both romcanticism and transcendentalism though out the noval. The whole book is has romanticism, such as him making himself happy by doing what he wants to do. The trip to Alaska is just one example of him living his dreams. Thinking for yourself is how i see transcendentalism, which is something Chris does alot. Many people told him to not do something but he does it anyways. One example is the guy that droped him at the trail in Alaska, he told him not to go but he did what HE wanted to do. Both ideas can be easliy found thoughout the noval of "Into the Wild".

Romanticism and transcendentalism go hand in hand. they are about creating a new adventure, idea, or in chris's case, a life style for yourself. into the wild is all about different people setting out for their goals. they reach for their dreams instead of just living on their life. i think they did it so they wouldn't spent the rest of their life wondering what it would of been like. they actually got up and did something they dreamed of. just like when chris was offered his old life, jobs, and new families, he turned them down so he could do what he wanted.
An example of transcendilism would be how Chris decided to take a journey to Alaska and cut his ties with his family. He knew there was a good chance he could die but he still pursued his dream. If he had the right materials for this journey, the chance of him dying would have been slim. He didnt really know any basic survival skills or anything. Into the wild has many examples of these two themes. The whole book is pretty much an example. Chris leaves everything and just walked into the wilderness. That's pretty individual and a total transcendentalist thing to do. He wanted to see the world through the eyes of nature and be away from all human activity. He is showing romanticism because he thought that nature could cure all of his problems and just make his life so much better. Another example is when he burns the money. Not a lot of people would do that and he really steps outside the box to show his point of view and to prove his point.

I think the whole story is an example of romanticism and transcendentalism. Abandoning money and security and social standards was not the ideal way of living, it was the opposite. He was a romanticist, i believe, because of his irrationality and strong intuition. Romanticist were a rebellion against the whole enlightenment period. Chris was a rebellion against so many standards set before him. He followed his intuition and did what he wanted driving him into the wild. It was like how he burned his money.
Chloe Martin, 6th hour
In Into the Wild, Chris's life is shown through Romanticism and Transcendentalism. I believe that almost everything that Chris has chosen and done is Transcendentalistic. I think Chris fights being a conformist every day of his life. He hates being a part of society. Chris will not even live by the government's rules. For example, he chooses not to get a hunting license, and does not pay taxes by not living in an esablished residence. The lifestyle that Chris lives is an example of Romanticism. The journeys he goes on show how he lives a Romanicist's life. He goes to the Grand Canyon, different mountains, Mexico, and Alska. He likes to see the natural beaty in the earth. It's a way of living for Chris. The magnificence of the wilderness and adventure it brings all represent the life of Romanticism that Chris lives for.

Into the wild shows romantisicm in many ways. First, chris thought he would never die in the wild. He didnt take enough materials to get him through his trips. He barely got through with what he had. There is also a few examples of transcendentalism. I dont think he really realized the dangers that came with living in the wilderness. He wouldnt accept the boots, but eventually he gave in.

ALex is both a romancticistic and transcendentalist. He finds the beauty in living in a world where he has only himself to depend on. He finds that loosing weight is living a good life, even though people view as killing himself slowly. He was transcendentalisic by standing by his values. When Gallien offered him some proper equipment, alex didnt want to take it and was a bit arrogent. Another characteristic is that, his individuality shapes his values and lifestyle. He doesnt respect his parents, and when they try to buy him gifts, he doesnt except them because he doesnt want to show them that he respects them.

Romanticism emphasizes inspiration, subjectivity and the primacy of the individual. Transcendentalism teaches us that divinity pervades all nature and humanity. Chris/Alex’s inspiration was to go out alone and take a life journey to Alaska. Through this journey he feels like he is communing with profits and hermits. He was judged by what he did and said and not constricted by his parents material world. He was not defined by their expectations. He felt more human with people who were less fortunate and less materialistic than he was raised. He changed or transcended into the individual he wanted to be.
Into the wild reflects transcendentalism and romanticism in many ways. First off chris goes into the wild thinking that he is invinsible. Chris also is one of the most indivisual people I have ever heard of. He doesn't think that he needs the government or anyone in his family. It's kinf of like when he says f*** the government (I dont want to say it cuz my mommy sometimes reads these) when he says this it shows that he has no respect for the government or laws. I tink this is a dangerous idea. I think this because he doesn't think he needs anyone, when in reality everyone needs someone. I think chris is kind of arregant by thinking this way. This is because he acts like he is superior to everyone, and it makes me sort of mad because I hate people like that.
Romanticism and transcendentalism is repeated several times throughout this book. For example he was told several times that the supplies he was taking were not enough for him to survive in Alaska. Although he was told this he still refused help. I think he refused help because he was such and individualist and was sick of his parents handing every thing to him on a silver platter. This is shown when he refuses to take the money and supplies from the gentleman who gave him a ride. This shows he is trying to earn what he needs to survive and in the long run, ends up killing him.

in the book i think theyre are alot of examples of romantism and transindentalism. chris is constantly going against the grain on things. there werent to many examples of romanism i found though. but in the book chris exibits transcendentalism when he gets his degree from college and doesnt pursue a carrer he couldve had more. the lifestyle he chose was totally opposite from what most people believe. he shows it so well becuase hes really just doing what he wants. chris is really non mainstream but he was following his dreams and fullfilling things for himself.

I believe that both of these themes are shown in the novel. Transcendentalism is shown throughout the entire book so far. Chris has left everyone behind for his dream and moved onto another life. First of all, he meets people on the way like Franz, and uses them to get to the places that he wants. He keeps his schedule in his mind. An example of this was shown by how Alex/Chris wants to be in Alaska, entering the wild, by April. He also burns his money to forget about the past and move on to the future. An example of Romanticism is shown by Alex/Chris' love for nature and independence. He always is moving and he likes being away from things. As shown in the book, Chris was camping out in a danger zone in a campsite and his ended up dying and that's where his trip snowballed into Alaska.

i believe that into the wild has many hidden messages of transcendentalism and romanticism, but a few of the more obvious ones; and a more ironic one that i found, was that, when he went to do his adventure, i thought it was quite ironic, that a man of his individuality, would go and tell people, oh, you HAVE to read this book! i found that quite ironic. I also can , i guess, accept that as okay, because he treated those people as family, and you tell your family your likes and dislikes. so i view that at the middle (unbiased) point because, both are accept in nature, its just that one is ironic, while the other is more acceptable to comprehend as what someone might do in life. except, he really forced few of his beliefs on people. Irony really is pretty often in this book. Or is that just me, making connections within my own life? Im not quite sure, but i think seperating those two would make this no fun!

Mr. Kay,
There are many ways that Into the Wild can be explained or referenced in Romanticism or Transcendentalism. But I'll say one. The entire idea of him going to Alaska can have something to do with Romaticism. He thinks if he goes then he will be able to lead this ideal life. Theres nothing pecific about it but its a big point. Also he could not want to be like and with everyone else so thats how it ties in transcendentalism. He wants to be both a romaticist and a transcendentalists. He wants to be different and stillm lead his ideal life.
