Day 23

I was pleased to be back with you today even if only to watch the end of the movie. How tragic for Neil to be so fearful of his individuality in the face of his father. How sad that sometimes people impress upon us their hopes and dreams to the point that they want to live through us and not let us live for ourselves. Neil's suicide was far more than his own personal death but the death of his individuality (metaphor). I truly hope that in your lives you learn to counterbalance your need and desire for individuality with the times when conformity also comes into play. These two can co-exist as long as you are making the choices which are best (and safest) for you.

Now, in regards to the Twain reading I gave you last Thursday. I hope you read it and understood what he was saying about point of view. Why did he not see the river the same way once he became a river boat captain? Why did this change his point of view? Give an example in your life when an incident has occured when you have changed your point of view on something because of that incident.

I think he did not see the river the same when he became a riverboat captian because he had to see it from his works point of view.Compaired to his regular point of view he sees the river now as the beauty and poetry has been sucked out of it. I think I have changed my point of view on hunting now that I am older. When I was younger I didnt like the fact of killing animals. Now I have realized it's not just killing animals but its a game of stragity. It is also fun to try and be as acurate as you can with a bow from so far away.

Mr. Kay,

I think that he didnt see the river the same as the captain did because he was never associated with it. Neither was he anywhere near it to be close to it and accept the beauty of it. He then sees how it really is and the beauty of it. He could never see what it really looked like it from his work. When I was younger I was just like Tyler. I liked to hunt but i didnt really understand why we would want to kill animals that are so beautiful. But then I went out and I leanred that its not a very easy task and that you have to work for it to be successful. Also, we eat the animals so we arent just killing them for nothing.

I think he viewed the river differently once he became a riverboat captain because it is now where he has to work. It is pretty much where his job is now and he really cant look at it like a place to relax and enjoy the river. I think I have changed my point of view on school now that I am in high school. i just kind of blew school off and now that I am older I ahve realized that I need an education to succeed in life and get a job.

From his work he had to look at it the way they did so he never really got to view it from his own point of view. Something that ive changed my point of veiw on is school. When i was younger i didnt really like school that much. Now i kind of like school. I dont exactly like the sitting in a classroom for an hour, but i like going and getting to see my frineds every day. I need to school to do good in life so i might as well enjoy it.

I think he didn't see the river the same way when he became captain because he saw it from another point of view. In his normal point of view he saw the river as beautiful and graceful. Now that he is captain, he has changed his way of thinking to how a captain thinks. He doesn't think about the things like beauty and poetry. He thinks about rising waters and when a storm is coming in. Like Timmy and Tyler I am a hunter, and when I was little i was excited when my dad would kill an animal. Now that I've grown up, I learned to respect the animals. Now hunting for me isn't all about the kill. I just like being out in the woods with my bow/gun.

I don't think he saw the river the same at the riverboat captain. He saw it from a different point of view. He never really say it. Only the beauty and poetry of it. Its basically his job and he just cant see it in the same way anymore. Its kinda like how kid blow off school and once entering high school they think of it way different. They actually try now cuz they know its important to get education to get a good job. Or as parents used to love there jobs before they had it and now that they do they don't really like it and they see it in a different way.

I think he didn't see the river the same way because he had seen it so much it had become insignificant in his mind. Sometimes when you first see things you are excited and then the excitement wears off and it becomes ordinary. That's how it was when the guy became a river boat captain. He saw the river and the excitement wore off. He was also thinking about all the business aspects of it because thats where he works. I've changed my point of view on a lot of things. One example thats true for everyone is when you were little, getting toys for birthday or Chrismas. The first few days you think they're so cool and then before the week is over you get bored and the stuff isn't so cool anymore.

At first he saw the river as this beatiful peaceful place to hang out and when he became a boat captain his impressions completely changed. He saw the river as this dirty place polluted with boats and steam. He saw the reefs that would bring down boats and pollute the river even more. As industry got better the river's peacefuless got worse. It really stinks when that stuff happens because it reminds you of how you didn't have a worry in the world when you were a kid and then you grow up and have to adjust to reality. Sometimes that happens with movies that you see when you're younger or music you listen to and you wonder "What was i thinking"? Thankfully I don't say that that often, but there's always the time you go to disneyworld and it seems to get more lame every year.

Mr. Kay,

I think he did not see the river the same way once he was a river boat captain because when he was not a river boat captain, he saw the river as a river. Just flowing water down a path carved into the earth. Big deal, but when he became a river boat captain, he saw the river not only as flowing water in a path carved into the earth, but as a whole new adventure. He took what was just a plain old river and turned it into something beautiful. I remember when I was about 13 years old, I could never understand what the big deal was when a cheif would spend all his time cooking, and making it look special. So the cheif made a chocolate cake and put strawberries all over it, big deal. But now, when I'm cooking, I always love making my food look as if a cheif made it. It just inspires me.

He did not see the river the same when he becam a river boat captain because he didnt look hard enough before. Everyone always says that if you want to see something for how it really is then just look harder. It changed his point of view because he realizes how beautiful it is. When i was younger I didnt realize the importance of education. I thought going to school was stupid and that we shouldnt have to do it. Now, I know that if I want to be succesful in my life I need a good education. I have to get good grades and get into a good college in the future.

I think that he didn't see the river the same because he never actually had to deal with it. His work invovled the river. So, in this case, he needed to spend a lot of time and energy with it. I'm sure there would be some incidences where he felt it was dangerous and scary. So he must appreciate it and look at it differently when it is calm. When I was younger I was always so excited to go to school. It was a place to have fun. Now I have to take it seriously because it actually affects my future.

When Mark Twain first saw the river before he was captain, he saw beauty. Once he became captain, he saw this same river everyday. He came to know every landmark and characteristic of this river. Day by day, his appeal and awe for this river became less and less. He went from an inspired bystander to a captain. It was no longer new and exciting, but more as just another river. He also began to see the negative aspects of the river that he had not seen before. This has happened to me many times. It's just a part of life as we grow up. One incident is the realization of my future. When I was younger I thought that I had so much time to get serious and think about my future. Now I understand that the time to focus is now.

I think the reason why he saw the river differently was becasuse he was so used to seeing the river, that when he became a river boat captain it was all old news to him. Sometimes when you first see things its always exiting, but then after awhile, that exitment wears off. I think thats what Twain was trying to explain. Obviously, his point of view changed once he became a river boat captain because he never saw the river through that particular perception before. I have many examples of this in my life. Some of those examples consist of, seeing the point of view of the world around you, and then when you go in an airplane, you see a whole new perception of the world. Also, seeing the outside from your window, and then actually going outside to get a new point of view of the outdoors.

I think he did not see the river the same because when he became the captain all the things he enjoyed about the river were, all kinda gone. The point of view changed, and he did not see the beauty at large as he once did. In my life my opinions have changed a lot in life. I always hated the thought of death. Hated it, it scared me and i would always freak out of the thought of it. But the more I thought of it the more i decided. We are only going to pass someday, we may be young, we may be old. But eventually were all gonna get to the place in our life where it just comes to a stop. Death is still a scary incident but when some of my recent loved ones passed it was hard. However you learn to except it, to cope
with it. The expierences are always with me but I learned you can't be afraid of something that will happen to everyone one day.

Once he became a captain he seen these things as dangers and bad stuff. He changed his point of view because his situation of what he was doing changed.I think he has aged and think of every thing in a technical posistion. When I was a litle kid in Florida my mom and her sister were shopping.SO me and my cousin decicded to hide and jump out and scare them.We didnt think any thing was wrong. They got so mad cause they had lost u and didnt know where we were.So we didnt understand why we had gotten punished. Now i realize that they were afraid we had been kidnapped or something.AS a young kid you see stuff differently than you would when your older.

I think he didn't see the river the same way because as a river boat driver he saw things for what they were. Like what some of the things in the river would do to someones boat. Or what the sun would mean for the weather on the next day. An example in my life when something like this has happened would be when I did choir in elementary school. At first i hated it, mainly because we sang songs that were extremely meteocre. But then i started singing songs that i liked. And i loved it so much that everyday after school, i would sing like there was no tomorrow to songs that i like.

One day, It could not be there anymore. After watching the news and seeing what has been going on in the world, it really has opened my eyes to what was in front of me the whole time. Many kids don't have a place to live, or even family. It's absolutely terrible.

Mr.kay,
I think that as we grow and get older they way we look and precieve things changes. I think that He didnt see the river the same becuse it all depends on the way your looking at something. At first he was just looking at that river as this beautiful river. then once he started seeing it every day it went from a relaxing place to a place where he workes and was there to just be there. An example of this in my own life has to do with music. In class when the teacher has us sight read a challenging peice my first reaction when I look at it is, that it's this peice of paper with scribbles all over it. then once i learn it, it turuns into this masterpeice of all diffrent types of sounds expressing how the coposer felt at the time he wrote it.

When i was little i heard music and thought nothing of it. But i grew up with it considering my dad was always playing his guitar. Ever since he moved I saw music in a new light. Its a way to express individuality and your feelings. Now that my dad is gone i realize music was a release for him. Now it is for me too.

I think he sees the river difrent because its just a normal part of life for him now. Him being a riverboat Captain makes the river normal and just a river. He probably respected it more when it was not as common to him in life. This is kinda what Tyler Inman stated. I used to go out hunting when I was a youngan and would shoot up the woods and everything that moved in it, just for the fun of it. Now I have taken hunting very serious. I now take pride in how I hunt and have consideration to when I go and kill an animal. Killing is like nothing to me anymore, but when I was 8 years old the only thing on my mind was killing a deer and just killing the deer. Wile growing up I realized its not just the killing that matters in hunting, because thats only about 25% of what its about. I see hunting diffrent because I now have to track and gut what I kill along with properly making it into food. Basicly, it just became a way of life and it is not so exciting as it used to be.

I believe that after he become a captain of the boat he did not perseve the same thoughts that he first did when he first wanted to be on the boat. I believe his thought changed because he is now looking at it from the working point of view. This piece by Mark Twain has related to different occurances in my life. One of the main events that relates to it is school in general. This relates to it because al my life up to highschool i have screwed around, had fun, and took it all as a joke. Once I only listened to some music type like rock and stuff like that. But after joining the cross country team and riding home in some of my team mates cars i learned tha there is other music types. I think he saw the river differently because when he was not captain he thought of it as freedom and when he became captain he had to take a more responsible serious role. His point of view changed because he had to step into a leadership role. This has happened to me several different times in my life. For example I played JV soccer as a freshman. I was just part of the group with little voice and this year I have stepped into a leadership role. Or like Timmy said about hunting when I was younger i didn't understand why people killed these amazing animals. Now I understand that we have to hunt deer or they will become over populated and i guess i would rather see a deer get shoot and be put out of its misery rather than see suffer when getting hit by a car.

I believe that his point of view changed because of the amount of times that he had seen the river. The first he saw the river made him feel incredible. Everything stuck out to him because he had never seen it before. Once he became captain, he saw it everyday. Once you see something over and over the thrill wears off. Soccer is a great example for me. The first time I played soccer I scored a hattrick and I didn't even know what that meant. I just knew that I scored 3 goals. Over the past 10 years that I have been playing and moving from club to club, scoring isn't as exciting as that first day. I mean scoring a goal now is a great accomplishment at this level. However the adrenaline after you score a goal isn;t really pumping as much as it used to.

It changed his view because now he has to look out for the bad tings that could happen to boat. I think that he did not see the rive the same way as before because he was not really close to the river. This changed his point of view because he now gets to see it. He now gets to admire its beauty. When I was younger my step father was an alcoholic and before I realized he drank too much I thought it was normal to drink 12-18 beers a night. When he used to drink he would get so mad at the littlest things. He sometimes would get violent towards my mom. Now when I see people drink it makes me mad because it reminds me of what happened in the past.

I believe that he did not see the river the same way once he became a river boat captain because his knowledge and view on it changed. When he became a boat cpatian, he started to give explanations to the different aspects of the river rather than just see the natural beaty in it. This changed his point of view because his brain automatically thought differently, just as a tourist's brain would think differently if they were to see the river. An example of this that relates to my life is when I joined the cheerleading team in 4th grade. When I was little, I always thought that when I grew up, I was going to be a cheerleader. Then I actually tried it, and it was not as exciting for me as I had imagined it to be. The enthusiasm I used to have for the sport went away, it just became another sport to me. I think there are a couple main reasons why he didn't see the river the same way. One reason is because once he was a captian he realized that it was work for him in a way. Also, before he became a captian he didn't realize that the river could be bad he just liked its beauty. Plus i think he though the river was perfect and nice for him. But once he was a captian he realized its danger and the things it can do to him. One incident in my life that changed my point of view is going to high school. I thought before it was a good place, not perfect but not terrifying. Now it is pretty bad knowing that there are drugs all about, chances of getting into the wrong thing and more.

At first he sees everything as a beautiful thing and greatly appreciates its existence. Then he looks at it the way a steamboat driver would; seeing all the hazards and bad thing that could happen. When I was younger, I didn't really like the idea of going to school. I still don't, but, as I learn more about life on my own and other things like politics, I understand that education is necessary to become successful in life. I see that everything that I don't like doing just makes me stronger as an individual because I have to mentally or physically fight through it.

I believe Mr. Twain saw the river quite differently once he was the river boat captain because he had a new perspective on something he already knew, plus he also had a new job, with new people he works around who influence his opinions and views. i would believe that this very much carries over into todays society, where many people become very different when they have higher up positions in the corporations. also, when those now rich people move into rich suburb housed areas, they also change many aspects of their life. no im not saying there is anything wrong with that, but it is wrong when those rich people become snobs, when they were just plain nice people not to long ago. thats my real comparison to what i think twain is saying. but in relation to my own life, when i become fond of a new situation, i will tend to go and try to be nice to all the people there, and unfortunately, people do not seem to change their view of me, when they have me up close and personal, and i find that unfortunate.

My sincere apologies for the lateness. to be honest, i have no excuse.

He mainly did not see the river tha same because he used to look at its beauty. Now, after becoming a captain, he looks at its differently. Now its just a passageway to where he needs to go. It probobly changed due to the fact that he needed it to look like a river for transportation and not beauty. To me, school does this a lot. Because of my science class, it might veiw the way a car begins moving or something instead of just noticing it. I realize the difference in motion due to what I learned.
