The most interesting feature of The Crucible is that it is so impressively a play about evil forces, despite the fact that it seems to be a play discrediting belief in such forces. How would you describe evil forces that Miller presents in this play?

To me it seems like evil forces is one of the big points in the play. The puritans are against all evil but that is what one of the main problems is. I think one of the evil forces that Miller presents is witchcraft. All tha citizens on Salem see it as the work of the devil. For example, Mrs. Putnam believes Betty was under some spell because of witchcraft. The devil was brought up multiple times throughout the play. The puriatns are against it but yet it was mentioed so much. I find it interesting how Miller incorperated evil forces with the beliefs of the Puritans.
The puritans give there life to god and they follow his every move. These people in Salem are CRAZY eventually people have to have enough common sense to start acting like adults. Miller presents the witches in this play as the worst scenario that people had back in the day. Miller creates these characters to act like that a witch is a terrorist in present day because when you mention a terrorist people open there ears and are more on guard. if i could describe an evil force i a witch would not be one, i would describe it as a blood sucking demon that feeds on humans to live, not some witch. the puritans act like that what a witch is a blood sucking animal. this is how insane people can get when it infects vulnerable minds.
The whole town of Salem is being threatened with the problems of witchcraft. Miller's main evil force he is using in this play is witchcraft. The whole town revolves around the bible. If the bible doesn't say it's ok, then it's not. The town has no lee way to make mistakes. If they make one mistake, then they are put on trail. If someone did witchcraft now, they certainly wouldn't go to jail for it. Another evil reference he made was every time he mentioned the devil or burning in hell. There were a lot of people mentioning the devil throughout this play and most people don't talk about him that much now. All of these evil forces have led the people of Salem to go mad.
One of the main points in this play is not the evil forces but what seems to be the out come from the forces. The towns people are all against evil forces. However, the evil force of witchcraft in Salem causes a huge out break. The citizens minds become twisted and instead of just thinking people are witches they believe the cause of them being witches is the devil. In reality people do not see the devil and the witches are the people Abigail has been yelling this out. The evil forces in could be described as contageous. Like a cold is contageous so is becoming a witch in the town of Salem.
The life of people in Salem is very difficult. These people praise god and all that is good. When the conflict of being evil comes in all chaos breaks lose. The evil is being a witch or related or the devil. Many people get associated and get hung. All of the evil starts out just because of a few girls danceing in the forest. Then they think Betty is cursed and she says that she saw the devil. After that they say people they saw with the devil and it turns into chaos.
Evil forces in the crucible are a major part of the play. Alot of it revolves around the devil and witchcraft. Also people in the town are afraid of the devil and witches. They sometimes use witchcraft to blame others. They think betty is cursed and that they was her and others in the wood dancing. Also abigail drank a mixture of chicken blood. The woods is where the devil is. So if you go there you are now posseced and are said to be a witch.
I would describe the evil forces as the Nazi party during the Holocaust. The witches/Devil of The Crucible are the gypsies, crippled people and many more that got killed. The people of Salem are like the Nazis. The death camps are also like the gallows that were used to kill the witches. The whole witch hunt thisg was extremely stupid. So was the Holocaust. Many people died during the witch hunt for doing "witchcraft", as well as the Holocaust for causing Germany to lose WWI. Many people are killed for something they didn't do or cause. Many people have brains so they should use them or not have them at all.

Sorry if this makes some people feel a little uneasy
Evil forces are everywhere in this play. The belife of witches, the devil, how some people are reacting, and some of the actions some people are taking. The belief the people in the play have of witches and the devil is just the things they blame the bad things that happen on. Their reactions and actions about these things are just silly and pointless. Some people take things too far with the belief of witches. For instance their was originaly 3 people that were blamed for withcraft, and then that number exploded in to much more. Many people were jailed and hanged, many of them were qrongly accused. Also it got as far as people were blaming others to gain from their loss. So the evil forces in this book were evidently the people themselves.
The evil that the book seems to be about on the serfice is the devil and witchcraft. You would think this because there talking about witchcraft and how bad thing hapin because of the devil. But another true'er evil in the play is people acusing people of being witches. they do this because of greed, grudges.... one reason for this is for pasts incidences they want to get back at the person for so they get them killed by calling them witches. Another is for land or in abigales case she wants to get johns wife killed so she can be with him. another example is the girls taking advantage of the towns baliesfs to get rid of people they dont like. this is the real evil in the play.
Evil forces are a big part of Miller's play. Most of the evil forces that are represented are the work of the Devil. At the beginning, people are accusing eachother of being consumed by the Devil. Also, all of the lies that go on are works of evil. Abigail is probally the biggest liar in this play and if I had to say that anyone was taken by the Devil, it would be her not someone good like Rebecca Nurse. Rebecca has a well rounded reputation and the fact that people are trying to sentence her to death is just evil. Another evil force that is portrayed is the fact that John cheated on his wife. The sad part is that he cheated on his wife with Abigail, the most evil of them all. Overall, evil forces are shown throughout the play.
Evil forces play a big role in Miller's play "The Crucible." First of all they refer so many things back to witchcraft. They keep on thinking everyone is a witch when really, they don't exactly have proof of it. They also mention the devil many, many times throughout the play. I also think it is almost evil how selfish each and almost every character is. They will do almost anything to get out of it, even if that means throwing sombody else under the bus. They are so worried about theirselves and their reputations that its insane what they will do not to ruin it. Evil is definately shown a lot in this play.

In the Crucible it seems as if the forces of evil is always lurking in the shadows of a questionable action. Everyone in Salem is against all evil, but it seems as if that causes more chaos then it should. The devil is blamed for many things in this unique play. For example, Miller brings the idea of witches to the table. People get scared and panic. When that panic occurs it is when people are vulnerable to making stupid decisions. Things like taking the blame when you have done no harm. This is completely absurd.
The court system is definitely an evil forced that is described in this play. I think Miller likes to make us think about the modern day court systems too, and how they can be unjust. Obviously it is different because we have strict rules today, but in The Crucible it is interesting to see how the court system can put the tarnishing of their name before some ones life. They will hang some one before they look like fools and thats exactly what they did. They have hung twelve people so far on insufficient evidence and in todays court system, that would not happen. But what does happen, is falsely accused people being convicted. I would say that the courts are the main evil of the story.
For me i see the evil as quit a few main points. The puratins being such hypocrites being one of them. I mean seriously, here at the begining of the story the puritans claim they are against anything evil, yet later in the book they show sign's of such evils that they supposedly hate. And for what? Reputation? Life? Selfish desire is what i say for many, the way paris was so selfish towards his own motivations i found to be particularly annoying. Such evils are brought up repeatedly and all everyone dose in the story is focus on their reputation. Such evils are interesting and just like our selfishness and foolishness i find that it's nothing more but human nature

Witchcraft and Devils have a big part in the life of the Puritans. The evil forces described in the story wouldtake over someones body completely. The spirits would make their spirit go make other people do bad things and they couldnt help it. They also claimed that they could see the Devil in other people if they were possessed. This was very hard because if anyone ever did anything bad then they could just blaim it on the Devil and there is no proof. This also cause a big problem because a lot of people were dying from hangings that shouldnt have been. This is how the Devil and spirits worked in the story the Cricible.
